    re-posted for clarification

Looking to upgrade/replace a super solid (2013) Dell XPS 15 L521x model. Highly satisfied with it, love the build quality and screen, but I'm having difficulty finding anything more recent that has the same quality.

I don't care about weight or thinness, but I really want something reliable, sleek, & durable, with a solid-milled unibody and Gorilla Glass display, or something equally as solid. Unwilling to accept plastic hinges and keyboard flex.

Looking for something for daily use, listening to music and watching films, some moderate gaming.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Approx. $1500 USD +/- depending, maximum I'm willing to spend is $1900. Plan to buy it in the United States when visiting friends. Can purchased in EU if needed. (But stuff's expensive here. :/)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Excellent build quality, good battery life, most futureproof specs.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Unimportant, prefer durability and build quality.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? 14-15 inch.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some light gaming - Skyrim, Fallout 4, Witcher 3, MGSV, and older games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Would like to be able to play Witcher 3 / Doom / Fallout 4 / Dishonored 2 on Medium-High to High specs with consistent good performance.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality and solid feel. Strong preference for aluminum or magnesium unibody designs and Gorilla Glass. Prefer non-touchscreens. Would like decent speaker performance if possible. Optical drive desireable but not necessary.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Have been looking at the newer Dell XPS Series, the Zenbook Pro UX550 (customized by HIDevolution to help with the thermal issues), or maybe a Gigabyte Aero 15.

Prioritizing build quality/durability with a balance of gaming performance and good battery life. (Nvidia 1050 or 1050ti is okay, etc.)

A company with a good customer service reputation would be a nice bonus.

Sad that the newer XPS models are prioritizing thinness over a heavier aluminum design and getting rid of the optical drive, but still consider them.

Programming student student looking for <$1100 laptop (USA)

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 06:38 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Under $1100; USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2-in-1 form factor isn't important, battery life >6 hours with moderate use, I'm open to getting a 7th-gen HQ intel processor if the value for the price is good

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? under 6lb (2.75kg)

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Anything between 13.3" and 15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No video editing and no AAA game titles (I would be fine with Intel UHD graphics if it's a much cheaper option), Programming IDEs (Eclipse, Android Studio, Intellij, etc.)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nothing more intense than Minecraft or some older retro games with @ least 60 fps

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Dual-channel ram at least 16gb or 8gb with options to self-install new memory afterward, at least 1 Thunderbolt 3 port, at least 1 USB 3.0 port, windows precison driver touchpad, backlit keyboard, low fan-noise, IPS display

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm unwilling to get a Dell XPS 13. I just returned an XPS 13 because of the multiple heating and fan issues it had, so I'd like to avoid taking that risk again.

Sold my bitcoin to get a video editing/gaming laptop. Which one though? (U.S. $1500-$2000)

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 10:18 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around $1500-$2000. May be willing to go a bit higher if justified

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm mainly looking for something to edit footage with, some of which is in 4K. Color accuracy, functionality, and SD card slot are pretty important, and I'd really like some pretty decent battery life (3+ hours regular use). So I guess I would pick best specs/battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not super important, but I am pretty mobile so the lighter/thinner the better as long as it doesn't sacrifice a whole lot of functionality

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" or less

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. All of the above! Editing some 4K footage using Adobe PP & AE, possibly some 3D motion design, definitely CAD. I haven't gotten into gaming yet (currently a grad student with no life lol), but it will happen eventually. Will probably end up with an HTC Vive at some point.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No idea yet. Don't need to overdo it here, especially if I can upgrade in the future.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Accurate colors, battery life, dual storage (especially if I can get an nvme ssd), gtx 1060 (trying not to go higher for now), and it would be super cool to get the new i7-8750H!

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I know there are a lot to decide between here, as most high end gaming laptops sort of fit this category. I've just been at it for like 3 days now, and every time I think I've settled on one, something pops up that says it's horrible. I'm currently between msi ge models, sager NPxxxx, and Acer Predator, though I'm fully open to suggestions (Someone please convince me not to get the aero 15x...lol)

    7577 battery life

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 03:17 PM PDT

Hello all, I've been looking at the 7577 and am thinking about pulling the trigger on it. I have one problem, I've tried to find a consistent number on how long the battery lasts when doing regular stuff, i.e. browsing, typing up documents, and other non intensive stuff. Anyone have any real world experience with it? If it's 7hrs or above I'll problably get it.

Affordable Laptop that can act as a drawing tablet? [Win]

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 08:04 PM PDT

I'm an indie game developer currently working in a part time business that sometimes has anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour of quiet time. Time I can do some programming on the side. Any laptop can be used to make the caliber of games I work on but the problem is that I can't bring a drawing tablet and set it on the side to draw. I need a laptop that has a screen which can double as a drawing tablet.

Are there solutions that are NOT Surface Pro? Something reasonable. I could always try to finance something if anything.

Looking for a budget($500) ultra(?)portable laptop for general use and some photo editing

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 04:48 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $500, USA

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? not super important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" or smaller please!

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. the most demanding program I wish to run is Lightroom, maybe some Blender

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I have a PC for this, so it's not a priority

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd like to have an HDMI port for easy hookup to projectors

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Most important 3 factors are: 1) under $500. 2) 14" or smaller screen. 3) can run Lightroom reasonably well. I don't really need a 2-in-1 tablet, but I'm not necessarily opposed to it. Just figured I could get more performance for the money without it.

    Thanks for any help!

Architect looking for a Laptop for Revit that can be financed - Canada

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 10:32 PM PDT

    Hello r/SuggestALaptop

As the title mentions, my old laptop from college is on the brink of death, and with a few potential jobs coming up, I need to get a new laptop ASAP. The tricky thing here is that because I'm saving for my wedding in August, I'd really like a laptop that I can finance, at the very least for 6 months. To make it even harder, it has to be 0% (religious convinctions.) Specifically, I am located in Brampton, Ontario. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Budget: Roughly $2500-$3500 in Ontario, Canada but willing to eclipse it if it is worth it/finance terms exist.

MUST HAVES: -i7 Processor (preferably 8th Gen) or better -32 GB Ram or more -Min. 250GB SSD + min. 500GB HDD -Quadro P860 (P1000 preferred) or equivalent/better Graphics card (GTX1060 is fine.)

PREFERABLE: -17"+ screen -4K Display -Simple form factor (I hate the gaming laptop forms, but alas, I know I'll have to bite the bullet on this one) -8+ hours of battery life -Optical Drive -USB Type C charging.

Weight, Thinness, Colour don't matter to me but if an option exists, that's great.

The programs I'll mostly be running on it are Revit, AutoCad, occasionally 3dsMax, and very light photoshop.

If you guys have any suggestions in terms of specs based on that information, please let me know as the specs listed are based on my understanding of what I require for the job.

Counting on you Reddit, thanks in advance!

Are either of these <$500 laptops better than the rest?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 10:29 PM PDT

Hı all, I'm looking for a budget laptop under $500 Australian to take to family overseas, because even the budget ones aren't very cheap over there and given the price it's just for day to day usage. You know, the internet, streaming, MS word etc. I don't know much about cpu's, so would you guys be able to recommend either of these few? The most important thing is processing and multitasking power. As long it isn't slow, that's the main thing. I'd really appreciate some input. There are also a couple of Hp i3's which I haven't listed but they're dual core and some of these are quad core so I didn't think they were better but I'm probably wring which is why I'm here to begin with

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Approx $500 Australian dollars

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications. Specially speed and multi tasking.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not a deal breaker

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. About the 15" range

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No just day to day usage. Streaming, Ms Office, internet etc

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliability is important. Laptop will go overseas so if something goes wrong it can't be returned.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The two most important things are speed such as boot time and multi tasking and also reliability.

Gaming laptop for Witcher 3 and alike (something like Dell 7577 or better)

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 02:38 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 2300USD/8000PLN, Poland

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specifications

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat light laptop needed, arround 3kg/6,5lb (I use it on my lap mostly), thinness doesn't matter

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15,6

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Witcher 3 at over 30 FPS on High/Ultra

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good cooling (though I play on my lap I use pillow as an insulator so it's not that important), not too loud fans at load, somewhat solid build, so basically a machine wich won't melt my lap or break after lot of screen movement every day

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Actually I am now trying DELL 7577 with 1060 Max-q and i7 and it is doing pretty well... But I can't stand the screen, it really bothers me. I can get something more expensive if it has a better screen AND still have the solid, cool and silent build as 7577. I heard that Helios 300 may be the thing but the screen isn't much better, is that true? Or does it lack something mentioned before? Also I do not care for the design, only performance. Other than that, I can afford something more expensive. Cheers!

Dell XPS 13 (9370) or Microsoft Surface Pro

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 10:50 AM PDT

Hi, I'm currently torn over which laptop I plan to spend lots of time on for college, about to head out to Florida. Obviously I plan to use a lot of the time for internet browsing/typing up documents, but I also want to play some games as well that aren't too intensive.

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

No budget, USA. I plan to spend maybe over 2k USD.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

2 in 1 is a nice option, good battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not too much, portability is important, but I like sturdy laptops.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Around 13 in. 15 is too much.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Games: League of Legends, Payday 2, maybe try Rainbow 6 Siege on it.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Same answer as before. I don't mind minimal/low graphic settings.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'd really appreciate reliability and a good keyboard/trackpad. For the Surface I'd expect to use the touchscreen more.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I plan to use the laptop for a very long time. I'd like 512 Gb of space.

Looking for a portable screen for laptop

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 07:51 PM PDT

I have a Windows Tablet (Asus Transformer Pro - similar to a Surface 4) with only a single USB-C port. I've been looking at one of the USB-C portable monitors to carry around, like the Asus ZenScreen.

It's great because it folds up to tablet size and can power off a USB-C port.

However, since my laptop only has one USB-C port, how can I also plug in the laptop power AND use the screen?

Are there any portable screens that have USB-C Power passthrough? Or any dongle that provides this in the middle of a data channel?

I haven't been able to find anything and I've spent the last hour or so on newegg and google searching for "USB-C passthrough portable monitor" and "USB-C Power passthrough adapter", etc.

I'm hoping I've just missed something. Help me find a portable screen for my laptop!

Cheapest as possible, must have stylus support, aluminium build, for student

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 07:48 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Australia, as cheap as possible.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Decent specs, good battery life, good build quality.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? As long as it slots into a backpack and won't kill any shoulders, that's fine (6lb or less).

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 inch is preferred - don't get anything below 11 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No games, very light photoshop (only making quick edits, no special FX), Medibang Paint Pro, Paint Tool Sai (easy programs to run).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Needs reliable build quality and stylus support. I'd prefer metal, but plastic is fine as long as it's high quality.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. If you're looking at a company like Chuwi, or Cube/ALLDOCUBE. I've had both of these companies before - the Chuwi had a poor build, and the Cube overheated after just a couple months of owning it. Voyo (another Chinese company) seems good though. If you're looking at any of these Asian companies, make sure the stylus supports pressure sensitivity - my friend owned one that said it had an active pen, but it had no pressure sensitivity, and was simply bluetooth. Also, I'd prefer the device to be relatively up to date, so unfortunately, none of the pre-2013 Thinkpad devices would really work for me.

Which Laptop is better for my budget?! Asus FX53VD Gaming Laptop OR Asus FX503VD 15.6” OR Acer Nitro 5 15.6" Gaming Laptop

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 12:24 PM PDT

Both the FX503 and the Nitro 5 are i5's and the FX53VD is on sale $999, and it's an i-7.

I broke my last laptop so I need a replacement! I basically just need it for emails, music, and League of Legends and maybe some CS:GO. I don't play hardcore games or need a crap ton of storage.

I just know next to nothing when it comes to this stuff. Any insight would be great.

I'm leaning towards the ASUS FX53VD because of the i7 and the sale seeming like the best deal. All the prices are very similar though and under $1100.

Looking For A Long Lasting Laptop $1000-$1200

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 05:57 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around 1000, no more than 1200. In the US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No preference, the battery should last fairly long.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? The less it weighs the better

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I've used both windows and Mac so either works.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Will do some photo editing and a device that will run Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator really well is important. I used to have an HP and it would take forever to edit photos and would sometimes just freeze up.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not a gamer.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nothing specific needed

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. As I said I'm headed into college in the fall and really want something that will last for a long time and can use to comfortably run those adobe programs I mentioned. I know next to nothing about computers so any suggestions are welcomed! I've only ever had one laptop before (an HP) that lasted a little more than a year and it was always freezing up. A device that can support tons of pages and tabs being open at once is really crucial.

    Student looking for a laptop.

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 05:42 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around €600-€800, Holland

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for money and a good battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Thinness doesn't really matter to much as long as it's weight is light.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Medium size, around 14 inch

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Not really

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch-screen is important and the keyboard should be good quality.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Would be nice if it had a keyboard which gives light.

Very Low Budget Used Laptop for Coding

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 04:30 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, less than 200 dollars preferably 150.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Anything 5 hours+ battery life, great CPU that isnt a Core2Duo (unless its the last option available)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too wide, not more than 2.3+ inches thick. Preferably small like a Thinkpad x220 but can be larger like an Inspiron n5010 from 2010.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux compatibility, but should be able to run windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Larger than 12 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Firefox, NES emulators, SNES Emulators, GBA emulator and Notepad++ (Maybe game TF2 at lowest settings)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Run classic emulators flawlessly, and possibly tf2 at lowest settings or better.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good screen, Good Touchpad, no optical drive necessary. Reliable

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. It can be any laptop brand, it does not have to be a 2016-2018 laptop. Heck anything between 2011-2014 could be ideal for me.

Anything that does not have EMMC storage and changeable STORAGE AND RAM.

I was going to get an X220 but I feel like that is a terrible option for anything but very light workloads. (Am I correct in that assumption?)

    Intel v nvidia graphics

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 02:52 PM PDT

Hi, I haven't bought a PC or laptop in about 10 years and haven't kept up with how things have been progressing.

Now I'm looking around for a Thinkpad or a Yoga 2-in1. The ones I'm interested in come only with Intel graphics. I plan to do some basic video editing on it.

So I'm wondering what people think of Intel graphics cards versus dedicated nvidia cards from back in the day?

To be specific I've been using a VAIO with an NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 540M GPU 1GB video memory, 4gb ram, Core i7 processor for the last 6 or 7 years.

The Thinkpad/yogas I'm considering come with these graphics "cards":

Thinkpad x230t: Intel HD Graphics 4000

    Yoga Thinkpad 260: Intel® HD Graphics 520

    Yoga x380: Integrated Intel® UHD Graphics 620

I'm not expecting miracles out of this hardware but I'm just wondering how they'd compare with my current Nvidia card.

    cheers

What would be the best laptop to buy for an incoming college freshman?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 02:19 PM PDT

I'm premed in the USA and my budget caps at around $900. I tried a HP Envy x360 for a week and liked the feel and look of it but it did not work out.

HP Omen 15 vs. Dell Inspiron 7577

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 06:03 AM PDT

    Hey!

Currently trying to find a new laptop for Gaming/Animation purposes and these two seem to be within my budget and pretty good for their price. Not sure which one to choose so I'm wondering if you guys and gals could tell me about the intricacies of the two, and if there are other within that budget range that you could recommend instead if you think there is something better.

    Cheers!
