    Simple Questions - April 24, 2018

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 05:13 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Don't make a simple mistake like I did, remember to enable XMP in your bios if needed for your ram!

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 07:59 AM PDT

Completely slipped my mind until I was poking around in my bios when no realized my 3000mhz ram was running at like 2133 until I enabled it.

Got 2700x gift from gf for birthday, which mobo and ram should I pair it with?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 03:10 PM PDT

    Hi!
Just got a 2700x for my birthday from gf. Not sure which mobo and ram to go with. I already have all the other parts, but need to get those to migrate my stuff.

    What do you recommend?

I will be keeping it on air, single gpu. Will be ATX form factor.
    Thanks!

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I was having some problems with my PC (Would have to restart pc 20-30 times till it would boot into the OS, games would crash all the time, etc) and through a little bit of research, I narrowed down the problem to my RAM. I then ran MemTest86 (MemTest Report) and I have 260 errors with my RAM. So is there anything else I can do other than just buying another stick of ram?

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    Ran MemTest86, had 260 errors.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

    None.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

    That's pretty much it.

    Thinking of buying a 1440p 144hz display

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 05:56 AM PDT

    Hello,

I have finished with my pc upgrade and now im thinking of upgrading my display. At the moment it seems that 1440p 144hz displays are reasonably priced and offer high resolution combined with high refresh rate. This seems to be pretty ideal.

Before buying I have a few questions tho. My gpu is gtx1080. Games like witcher 3 will probably run about 60fps at 1440p. My question is if i lower the game resolution to 1080p to get higher fps will the image quality be same as it would be on a native 1080p or will it be better/worse?

Also i wouldnt mind some suggestions on which display to choose. Currently im concidering Asus MG278Q ( 500 eruos in my country) or AOC AG271QX ( 450 euros ). Leaning towards AOC. Any suggestions in regarding this?

HELP ME - I fear I've killed my PC

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 10:51 AM PDT

So, I built my first PC in late December and recently decided to upgrade my PSU from 450W to 750W as well as some fans to finally complete my build. Today my PSU arrived and I set about swapping out the cables. Once that was finished I went to power on and... nothing. Assuming the PSU was faulty I connected everything back to the old PSU. AND IT STILL DOESN'T TURN ON! Now I'm freaking out. I'm a stay- at- home carer for my mum so I'd pooled my meagre savings for well over a year to buy all the components. Now I'm scared I've fried them and there's no way I can start at square one again. Please help me r/buildapc - have I doomed myself? Am I missing something obvious here? Thanks for reading and any advice is appreciated.

Advice on building a medium-end pc?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 03:46 PM PDT

So I'm looking to build a PC for gaming. I'm not trying to build an insane high-end computer that can play anything in 4K and 144fps; I'd rather just have a medium-end pc that can still run at least most games in mid graphics (my current one can't play anything remotely 3D without lag) while saving as much money as possible. Are there any parts in particular that you could reccomend me?

One in particular that I'm interested in is the GTX 710 ti. Most reviews say that it's still good, not top-tier, but definetely good, and also very cheap. I asked some of my friends (who also built their own pcs) and most said that if that's the case I shouldn't trust it, since it could go obsolete pretty soon. What do you people think?

    Dropping GPU Prices?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 12:03 AM PDT

Hey guys, new to this subreddit and just wanted to get some insight on the current state of GPU's. Recently upgraded to a Dell 1440p 144hz G-sync monitor, and realized my Gigabyte 1060 6gb needs some extra oomph on the games I usually play. Been waiting to get a 1070ti for what seems like ages, but they were around $700! Now a gigabyte 1070ti is $519 though, and I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on it and selling my 1060. You guys think the market is good enough to buy a card rn, or should I deal for now?

    Is NZXT's CAM still unusable?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 03:10 PM PDT

I see a lot of people complaining about CAM in reviews for the H700i, yet the Kraken which uses the exact same software is one of the most common AIOs I've been seeing in builds.

Is CAM still bad enough to eliminate the H700i and/or Kraken components for a new build?

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I haven't built a PC since the pentium 4 days so I've been trying to catch up on all the new stuff. Putting things together seems just as straightforward as before, probably even easier now with modular PSU.

I'm going to hold onto this list just a bit longer waiting for the right GPU prices and the 1950x will sometimes drop another $100.

    • I'm going to run the NVMe drives in raid 0 and I have two external hdd's that I suppose I can probably open up and run them as SATA. That works right?

    • Is 2x16gb better or worse that 4x8gb? The former had lower latency and I don't quite get this dual channel / quad channel thing. Max I'd go in the future is probably 64gb total so I'm not trying to save on slots.**

    • If I upgrade to a dual gpu setup in the future will this PSU be overloaded?

    • I've seen the Enermax AIO cooler is better for covering the whole heatsink but it seems to block a ram slot. What's the best option here? I'm not really interested in a custom loop

    • Biggest unknown for me is about PSU cables and compatibility with mobo and gpu(s).

    • Can anyone suggest a mid-tower with handles? That looks good. I'd ideally like to be able to move it occasionally as I'm freelancing. Otherwise I'd stick with the Meshify as I love the looks and like the high airflow

    Thanks for reading!

Powerspec PC Has Blown 3 Motherboards In 4 Months - MicroCenter Says I Had A 364 Day Warranty = Not Covered

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 08:54 AM PDT

I've got a PowerSpec G350 that was purchased on 4/22/17 parts list at link below

    http://www.powerspec.com/systems/system_specs.phtml?selection=G350

In January I had a motherboard failure. Took it into Microcenter for service and they replaced MOBO, said all other parts tested fine.

February, MOBO blown again. Again Microcenter replaces MOBO says all other parts tested fine. "Must be bad luck" says the rep.

At this point I go and buy a brand new surge protector just to make sure an older one isn't responsible for any electrical surging that I'm not aware of.

April 22, MOBO blown for a 3rd time. Took it into microcenter and they tell me that my 1 year warranty expired on 4/21 even though that doesn't equate into 1 full year of warranty service taking into account that there are 24 hours in a day and 365 days in a year. My warranty lasted 364 days and 10 hours. They tell me that any repairs will have to be paid for at this point.

Seeing as it's pretty obvious that something else is causing my MOBO failures and they seem to be putting band aids on my issue I'm turning here for help.

The only odd behavior my PC was showing which may or may not be related is this - I have a 2 monitor setup and it seems that under heavy GPU load, (streaming video to Chromecast while playing a simple game like Hearthstone) makes my monitors sporadically blink off and on. RIght one goes black, comes back after a few seconds, left one goes black then back on in the same manner. Sometimes it's one display sometimes both. It's not switching resolutions as apps open and close BTW. I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to PC repair so I'm not even sure if a faulty GPU could fry a MOBO or not but that's the only "symptom" I've ever seen.

Any ideas on where I should start with something like this?

Don't buy a 144hz monitor unless you're prepared to never use 60hz again.

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 04:05 PM PDT

Title. After using/gaming on my 144hz Viewsonic Xg2401 for a few months, It's painful to use a 60hz Asus or Dell monitor. 144hz is so much smoother, not only in games when pushing 144 fps, but also just for general use. Watching videos, web browsing. It feels and looks so much smoother. Don't make the jump unless you're prepared to never go back. That's my opinion.

Overdue 2600x upgrade from a 8350 - need PSU and RAM help

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 04:05 PM PDT

Build Help/Ready: This is my main gaming and general purpose computer. I have a AMD 8350, a rx 480 and benq xl2730z right now and a serviceable case. I tell myself that I will upgrade when I can afford 100% performance uplift for a reasonable price. Local retailer said they would flash the mobo bios for me before I pick it up. So its time.
I intend to run stock CPU cooler for a while and pick up a quiet aftermarket in 6 months and the 480 will suffice for another year I think. The rest of it I would like it to be as cool and quiet as possible.
Questions: RAM and PSU. I build low end office computers regularly, but I don't have much experience in mainstream parts. the ram seems to be good for the price and the PSU seems super quiet and is a pretty cheap for gold cert. I want to keep things under $1000 AUS if I can. I only upgrade mobo/cpu rarely, so this is a big deal for me.

Do Dual Monitors Affect Performance in Games?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 04:26 AM PDT

Hello, Currently an ultrawide monitor (that I got for a good price) is on its way to my house in a couple hours. I have been using this 720p 25 inch monitor and since I'm going to use alongside the ultrawide, will it affect performance while playing games?

Now I'm talking just having the secondary monitor in the desktop doing nothing, I know running anything that uses flash or video will decrease performance, I'm just talking about leaving it on the desktop.

    computer wont turn on

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 03:57 PM PDT

I have a custom built tower computer and when i turn it on I can hear the fans working but nothing shows up on the screen. The power button works to turn on the computer but then, even if i hold it, in an attempt to turn it off nothing happens. So I have to turn it off using the main switch in the back. This happened a few days ago and then resolved itself without me doing anything and is now happening again.

    Any advice is appreciated

    R5 2600 memory question

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 03:14 PM PDT

Recommend an SFF case for me

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 03:13 PM PDT

I'm tired of having a massive computer (NZXT Phantom). What do you guys recommend for a mini-itx case that will get me as small as possible, preferably for under $100. Whatever I get, I'll eventually cram a high end GPU (1080ti level) into it, so cooling is nice (is that possible in an SFF?) Thanks for the help!

Provide any additional details you wish below.

One thing that I am unsure about is how well all this will fit in the case. First time building a computer.

Also what is the benefit of i7-8600k compared to the i5-8600k for my needs?

    Thanks!

Not included in the list: GTX 645 OEM Graphics card (Because I didn't want to buy a card with the current state of the market, I had this one lying around).

I finished this build a lot faster than I did my first one, because this time I knew exactly what to do. I finished the build from start to post in about an hour and a half. Absolutely no problems along the build, everything was clean and simple. So far, I'm loving it. It can run most games at medium settings/1080p/60fps. Gonna upgrade the graphics card once I can find a good deal. Let me know what you think! Obligatory Pictures

    Thanks again r/BuildAPC !!!
