    Simple Questions - April 19, 2018

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 05:13 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

If you had to go with Gigabyte or MSI for an AM4 motherboard... What would you do?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 05:42 AM PDT

Alright so I'm switching over to a Ryzen 2700X today and there are two combo deals available that deduct $20 from the price. I can't spend $200 on a motherboard. This is the absolute most I'm willing to spend.

    The Gigabyte X470 board https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813145060&ignorebbr=1

    The MSI board https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813144177&cm_re=x470-_-13-144-177-_-Product

Based on brand sentiment when it comes to AM4 compatibility... What would you go with? I'm fully aware of the Nvidia bullshit going on right now and ideally I wouldn't support either one of them but I can't be without a PC until Asrock comes back in stock and does a combo deal bringing it down to a price I can handle.

    Ryzen 5 1600 vs Ryzen 5 2600/2600X

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 08:34 AM PDT

Which CPU is the most "worth it" to buy right now, Ryzen 5 1600 or Ryzen 5 2600/2600X. This is my first pc build so I am not that experience in all the information released through benchmarks today. I am currently missing a CPU and MOBO for my pc build and I am hard stuck on if I should spend that extra ~$50-100 (or more) on a newer CPU + MOBO or save that amount and go with last gen CPU + MOBO (micro center combo deal). I will mainly use my pc for gaming, watching videos/movie/streams, and school.

[Picking nits]Can we get the thumbnail text for buildapc changed back to what it used to be? It is now harder to pick out this subreddit from multiple tabs, than what it used to be.

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 07:45 AM PDT

A month or so ago when one of the mods was compromised, the layout of everything was changed, and the text that shows up in browser tabs was changed. To start my day, I have multiple subreddits opened automatically, and r/buildapc is the only one that doesn't have the name of the subreddit at the beginning of the thumbnail. Picture for clarification. It used to be obvious that it was the "buildapc" subreddit; now it looks like it is the "planning" subreddit.

    New build for 1440p.

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 08:28 AM PDT

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Looking to put together a system primarily for gaming.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Hoping to push 144 fps in e-sports titles, primarily Overwatch, maxed out. Also want to enjoy some triple A goodness on 1440p, using G-sync to compensate for some likely lower frame rates. I've been playing off a laptop for the last 18 months, looking forward to going back and playing some of the games I've missed! Feel free to make recommendations on games too!

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Thinking of about 3.5k AUD, plus or minus 1-200 bucks.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Australia

**Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please).

The parts I've chosen obviously allow my to overclock, however I have no experience in doing so. My thoughts being that it may get me some longevity out of the build down the road, rather than necessarily overclocking out of the box. Is it worth it? Should i scale back the CPU to save some cash on the mobo and cooler?

    Cheers!

What is the best way to get windows?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 11:46 AM PDT

While picking parts for my first build I could not believe that standard Windows 10 is about $100 on PCPartPicker. Are there any more affordable ways to get windows?

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

It's only happened twice now, the first time happened while I was not in the room (so I came back to find it in its non-responsive state). The second time I was actively watching a YouTube video.

It sounded as if the power had been cut, the screens made that "pffft" noise and they lose signal (though they themselves still had power). The keyboard and mouse died also (the keyboard is backlit and has a blue light indicating power - this was on but the backlighting was off and could not be turned on). My external hard drive's blue light was also still on. All the fan lights and motherboard LEDs were still running their usual animations

The Reset and Power buttons on the front of the case were also unresponsive, I tried the Reset first and then held down the Power button for at least 15 seconds to no response (these do work). The only way to reboot was to cut power at the wall, it works after this.

I've been running this for a good 8 months now without many problems (only a minor LAN problem which was fixed with a BIOS update). The first time this happened was a few days ago, and it happened again today. The desktop is usually on 24/7 and its impossible (so far) to predict when this problem occurs

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I'll update this section as it happens again and I get to try things. My theory is that its a motherboard problem since the Power and Reset buttons stop working. I want to see next time if the computer is still contactable through TeamViewer as that would show that the OS is still operational (but I havent had a chance to test this yet).

Monitoring the temperatures and the CPU idles around 35C with GPU around 51C

BIOS is updated to 2018/03/27 version, it is one model out of date now (most recent was 2 days ago but it doesnt list "increase system performance/stability" as a feature whereas the rest do. I'm also a little dubious of attempting a BIOS update if the system is unstable

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

I don't believe pictures are relevant here, nothing has changed internally since initial build.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Replace this text with your answer.

    Potential Motherboard Replacement/Upgrade path

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 10:19 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do) Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming, probably around 1080p. if I can afford it much later, upgrade it to support VR.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) As is, I'm already 1080p 60fps on high settings for most games I intend on playing for the forseeable future, but as said, upgrading to a VR capable setup would be a decent thing to build around.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

That's what I'm trying to find out here, so I know what to save for. Ballpark is perfectly fine.

In what country are you purchasing your parts? Canada.

*Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). *

Currently in my Rig (which was a prebuilt!) , I have:

    An Intel Core I7-2600

    An Asus 1050

--which are the only parts I intend on keeping. The motherboard is constantly trying to commit suicide (only two USB ports on it work, with one in the front occasionally working when some unknown criteria is met and half the ram slots have committed suicide already.) , and the power supply looks about as trustworthy as a van with "free candy" spraypainted on it parked next to a preschool.

The case doesn't leave much to be desired, but I don't mind sticking with it untill I can snag a replacement.

the man concern here is the motherboard. I'd IDEALLY want one that'd be compatible with the CPU, as that'd save me a fair bit of money. A New set of RAM for said motherboard. and new storage - as I don't trust the drive I have, despite it being the last surviving member of the group of like 4 I had that all died in the same week.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

This is more a checklist - as I don't intend to, and likely can't afford to buy the parts at once.

Should I buy pre built or build my own?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 06:54 AM PDT

I'm trying to get into the PC game after playing on console my whole life. I have a budget around $600-900 I also need a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. I was wondering whether it would be still worth building my own gaming PC with the whole surge in GPU pricing or I should get a pre built.

[Build Help] $2300 and some parts for my first 4k gaming machine.

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 03:41 PM PDT

    Build Help:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    I have, yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

4k gaming. The 3TB HDD will be used as media (video/audio/images) storage.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

4k gaming at max settings. Far Cry 5, Overwatch, WoW, Bioshock Infinite, AC:Origins

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

$2000-2500 For the parts I do not have already. I'm also keeping $200 for a mouse/keyboard, but I want to go into a store and get tactile feedback before just picking up in-store.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

Oregon, USA. I have access to Fry's, but no Microcenter

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

To confirm, I have the 2 SSD's and HDD already. They're coming from my last build. Same with a 1080p monitor that I'll be using a second screen. I also already have a copy of windows 10. The rest of the computer needs to be new.

    Open questions I have:

If my plan is to try and overclock, double the ram, and SLI/Crossfire a 2nd video card in 2 years, do I need anythign other than the stock ryzen cooler for now?

    1080 TI over 1070 TI ?

    4x8 Ram? 2x16? 4x16?

Thanks for your advice. I took advice from a /buildapcforme post to adapt to the new ryzen chip. I think I have no part as to over/underpowered, but I'll totally take advice

Edit: After a few responses, the suggestion to go from the 1070 to the 1080 TI is something I'm going to do. I'll keep listening to suggestions though. I'll try and finalize a build and re-post early next week before I go and buy.

Debug light question on MSI B350

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 12:27 PM PDT

I haven't built a new PC for years, so this might be a silly question

    MSI B350 Motherboard

    Gigabyte GTX 1060 GPU

    AMD Ryzen 7 CPU

This is a new build. At startup, the CPU light goes on for 2 seconds then off, then the VGA light goes on for about 4 seconds and goes off. The PC proceeds to boot normally and everything seems to work. I managed to update my BIOS install the display and motherboard drivers with no issue, but the lights still go on every time I start up the PC

Is there a reason the lights are coming on?

Side question: The GPU fans only spin for a few seconds before turning off at start up. I read that the fans on the new cards only turn on when they go beyond 60 C. Bit concerning for me, since I'm used to the fans always spinning

    Any help is appreciated, thanks

Question about cloning Windows OS to SSD

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 12:26 PM PDT

I'm building a new PC which will include a 250 GB SSD. My current (almost full) 1 TB drive has windows installed on it (I don't think its on its own partition). I also have a 2 TB drive i recently bought that i started using for my Xbox.

My question is if the following is possible with those drives (SSD, 1 TB HDD, 2 TB HDD):

    1) Reformat 2 TB drive which currently has xbox games on it

    2) Clone all files from 1 TB drive to the 2 TB drive

    3) Delete all files from 1 TB drive except the Windows OS files and other basic stuff

    4) Clone the reduced amount of files from the 1 TB HDD to the SSD

    5) Use the SSD to boot windows on my new PC and use the 2TB drive for large file storage

    6) Format the 1TB drive and use that for the Xbox.

I know that this will take a long time (shortened a bit if i use SATA instead of USB for transfer). I'm asking if this will work as intended and not risk deleting my files. Or am I better off buying a new copy of windows and installing it on the SSD. I will be buying a new motherboard for my new PC and I read that windows keys are tied to motherboards so this is why I'm skeptical that this all may work.

    Thanks in advance

Ryzen 1600X getting worse benchmark scores after overclocking more?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 12:25 PM PDT

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/HKMTHh

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I just updated my mobo's BIOS to F22, which is suppose to improve overclocking for RAM and CPU's. I was finally able to get a stable RAM overclock at 3000MHz, and my CPU up to 3.9, but after running UserBenchmark, my CPU's 4-core and multi-core score actually went way down. I ran a couple more benchmarks after restarting again and then waiting 10 minutes for the OS to fully load, and it still gave the same results. I went through my history and found a much older UserBenchMark and you can see that my CPU did much better, despite only running at 3.8GHz. I'm not sure what would cause only the multithreaded test scores to go down, since I'm definitely not a pro at overclocking, and I'm not sure what to try.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Not much, I'm not sure what could be the cause other than the BIOS update (and I can't roll back). Google didn't help much, the only results were for generic Ryzen benchmarks when the CPUs first came out. I ran multiple tests and they all had the same problem. I have the same settings in my BIOS as I did before, and the same fan curves.

How I fucked my PC by applying new thermal paste

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 12:16 PM PDT

Some days ago I thought "damn, my CPU is running really hot when idle, I should put some new thermal paste on it" so I went ahead, ordered some good paste and did exactly that. The old paste wasn't really dry but I got that far already and changed it.

Putting the heatsink on the CPU again and tightening the screws was a real bitch because it's hard as hell to fit the screws into the small holes and everything is really close together in my case. Also I did it for the first time and was afraid of applying pressure anywhere in fear of destroying other parts. While tightening the screws I must've lifted the heatsink several times from the CPU (this is really bad, since little air bubbles form on the thermal paste which is bad for heat distribution). Before, my PC must've been at somewhere around 50 degrees Celsius when idle (don't remember exactly), now I've got around 70 and it goes up to 105 reaally fast (I got an i5 3570K)

Sorry for the rambling, I guess you could see it as a PSA. If anyone has any tips on how to undo my fuckup or get better temperatures I'd gladly take them. I don't want to buy a new heatsink as it probably would be even bigger than the current one, and I think of maybe upgrading in the (not very) near future. I've heard about magnetic screwdrivers, but aren't they bad with all the electronics inside? I have no idea.

Edit: I didn't have any issues other with it running hot, but now I've turned on my pc and everything is really "choppy", for example moving a window around my desktop. Maybe it's another issue? Another Edit: Fixed the stuttering issue by doing a full shutdown by cmd. RAM wasn't full before and CPU usage neither, but it's still better now

What's the difference between different brands of the same graphics card?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 08:26 AM PDT

I'm new to PC building but I cant for the life of me figure out what the difference is between, for example, an MSI GTX1080ti and an ASUS ROG Poseidon GTX1080ti. Is it just the cooling/connectors that are different?

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Mostly gaming, would like for this computer to last.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Whatever my budget can get me, but of course the higher the better.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    Around 2000$ CAD.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada.

    Parts:

    • CPU : Intel Core i7-8700K
    • Motherboard : MSI Z370 SLI Plus
    • Video Card : EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 8GB FTW
    • Memory : Corsair 2x8GB Vengeance LPX DDR4-3000
    • Solid State Drive : Crucial MX500 1TB 2.5"
    • Case : Phanteks Enthoo Pro M SE Tempered
    • Power Supply : Seasonic SSR-750FX
    • CPU Cooler : Noctua NH-U14S
    • OS : Microsoft Windows 10 Flash Drive

I'm very new to computer building, and after doing some research this build seemed quite good, but I wanted a second opinion from people with more experience then me. If you have any advice or think that a different part would be better, please let me know :)

    Upgrading my GPU

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 02:07 PM PDT

I was thinking about upgrading my gpu and was not entirely sure what to get or what would be compatible with my current pc. I was leaning towards getting a 1060 6gb card. My main two questions with getting this card would be if I could effectively run it on my current system without bottlenecking the card to much, and if I would need to upgrade my psu? My current specs are as follows:

    CPU: FX-8370

    GPU: XFX R9 280 3GB

    MOBO: Asus M5A97 R2.0

    RAM: 2x4GB DDR3 1600 Mhz

Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 7200 RPMs

    PSU: EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze

    H370 or Z370?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 09:03 AM PDT

Hi, so I am planning of buying a pc soon for gaming and I will be using my pc wirelessly unfortunately because my router is not near where I will place my PC. So I don't know which motherboard to take between the Z370 AORUS gaming 5 with a 802.11.ac 1x1 3165 and the H370 AORUS gaming 3 with a AC 2x2. I also want to take benefits of the other features on these motherboards. Thanks in advance !

    Upgrade Help With Motherboard/CPU

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 11:41 AM PDT

To begin I'll detail all my current specs PSU: Corsair 750w GPU: GTX 1080 CPU: Intel Core i5-4690k MOBO: MSI Gaming 5 Z97 (LGA1150 Socket) CPU COOLER: CORSAIR Hydro Series H100i RAM: 2 8gb sticks of g.skill DDR3

I just received the new GTX 1080 and I'm getting constant frame freezing in game from what I assume is CPU throttling. I do not know what I should do about upgrading because I know my mobo cpu socket isn't supported really at all anymore and want to get a future proof one with a socket that will support better CPU's. Any help with suggestions for a better mobo plus a CPU that can handle the GTX 1080?

First build problems ( shut off with high cpu temp )

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 01:44 PM PDT

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/naxrabot/saved/sG4WXL

    Greetings!

A little breakdown of my situation, but they'll be a TL:DR at the bottom.

So yasterday, my gpu finally came in the mail, and after a few tedious hours, and a bit of troubleshooting, my build was complete and powered on to bios successfully! ( As a first build, I was extremely excited I ran into very minor issues )

As I boot it up, installed Windows and got to my desktop, I decided to make sure everything was working correctly. All of my PC fans spun, all my internals looked good, and PC reconized everything perfectly.

Wanting to test out if my coolers are working correctly, I downloaded and booted up core temp and a gpu temp viewer. My gpu was at a solid 52 celcius, with my cpu at a low 24. I let it sit for about 45 minutes to an hour to make sure theirs no drastic changes in my temp. Updated all my driver's that needed to be updated, installed planet coaster and threw it on ultra as a sort of stress test for a bit to see how it handled, and of course low frames, but I was expecting that anyways, but other wise it handled itself pretty good.

After going back to my desktop, setting up my PC with some antivirus, and other software I needed and decided to play around a little bit being amazed at how fast she was running ( coming from an old aloenware laptop that was very very slow ). Out of nowhere, she completly shuts down.

Not knowing why, I booted her back up, got to the desktop, and tried to figure out why it happened.

TL:DR - after she shut down, i flipped her back on and booted up core temp to see if it was a temp issue, my cpu was reading at 87 celcius out of nowhere and wasn't dropping, so I turned her off and called it a night.

What could of caused my cpu to get that high?

Was that the probable reason why she shut down?

I did noticed that in my stupidity, i installed my h60 cpu block upside down ( as in the Corsair logo was upside down ) could this have caused the sudden Spike? That maybe since its not in the correct position, it doesn't cool it as it should? Or does this sound like a different issue?

    Is this build ready?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 01:38 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

I am asking for build help.

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes, I have.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I am only using it for gaming.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I am looking for 1080p 60 FPS on medium settings in Fornite, Minecraft, Medium in CS:GO, and max on ROBLOX.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

My budget is 800 CAD, but I can go over if necessary.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

My build should be like https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/NRcrV6 but I need someone to help me lower the price a little. (I still need a monitor, mouse, keyboard...)

    I guess that's all, thanks!

Considering a used monitor to save money; what's a decent 144hz, low input lag, minimal blur monitor that can often be found cheap used (or on sale)?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 01:16 PM PDT

I've been wanting to switch to a 144hz (or so) monitor for competitive gaming, but my finances are pretty tight. I figured I could pick up something used, but most price comparison tools are based off of new, currently in production monitors.

144 hz over display port, low input lag, and minimal motion blur are the main points I'm trying to cover. 1080p is fine, and I'm not worried about adaptave sync (especially since I'm using an Nvidia card and don't think the extra cost would be worth it).

As for budget, under 150 would be amazing, but even under 200 is acceptable. Are there any worthwhile 144hz monitors that go for prices like that when bought used?
