    Simple Questions - April 18, 2018

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 05:15 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

April 2018 - get a GTX 1080 now or get a 1060 and wait for the next gen CPUs?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 07:52 AM PDT

I can't afford to buy a 1440p/4K 144hz screen or a VR kit, on top of building a new PC.

I probably won't buy these until next year. Until then, I will be playing 1080p 60hz.

What is the cheapest, most future proof option?

    • buy a GTX 1060 now then upgrade to the next gen GPUs when they come out/when i need it
    • buy a 1080 now so I won't have to upgrade when I have a better screen/vr

EDIT: I just noticed I wrote 'CPUs' in the title, I meant to write GPUs (I.e Nvidia GTX 2000 series)

Hey, I'm building a pc for gaming and vr. Looking for a good cpu. Which one is better? I know the Ryzen has threading, but it seems like i5 is better for gaming. I5 is around 250 and the Ryzen is about 175. Any help is appreciated

    Silent PC for C# development/Lightroom

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 06:16 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

My 8-year old PC just died, so would like a replacement and have been interested in building one for a few years but not had the need until now.

Mainly development (C# mainly) but also the occassional use of Lightroom (photos are stored on a NAS so I don't need a local HDD). I need a large SSD as I run SQL Server + multiple VMs. Would ideally like more RAM but can add more at a later stage.

Ideally, I'd want a fanless PC (I've been spoilt by using my Surface Pro) but could be talked into a fan if it made sense.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    N/A - no gaming

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    <£1250

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    UK

Building a new PC for gaming and streaming - Opinion?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 03:23 PM PDT

    PCPP Link

Is this a viable build for the purpose of gaming and streaming at 60 fps 1080p? Should be somewhat future-proof as well.

And could anyone confirm if the cooler / ram combo actually works out (clearance and such)? Should work as the RAM is 42mm high and the Noctua has 44mm clearance. Still would like a second opinion.

Got a 600W PSU Link already.

[Build ready] Building a PC for Solidworks for 1000€

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 12:56 PM PDT

My dad needs a Solidwors workstation for his company, and he asked me to build it. There's no hard budget but he wants to keep it aroud 1000-1200€

I've built a few gaming computers before, but I don't really know what hardware to get for 3D modeling. I've read that single core performance is key, so I went for the 8600K over the 8600 because of the greater clock speed. I'm still not sure if I should upgrade the processor to an i7.

The PC is, for now, only going to be used for modeling, but he says that they will probably be running simulations in the future. So I decided to skip the video card for now, as it can be easily added in later (modeling is apparently CPU based). This is also the main reason I'm considering the i7.

    Here's the build so far:

    1080p gaming build

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 02:52 PM PDT

Hi everyone, my friend wants to build a purely 1080p gaming rig. he is coming from consoles and I don' think he is going to overclock in the near time unless I do it for him.

he wants to have the highest setting for his budget on 1080p

He does not want to exceed $1000 and he is buying the parts in the U.S.

I wanted to use ryzen 2000s series but haven't really decide until the reviews come out I just put into the list just to see how much it will cost. I don't think my friend will use SLI so I think we will wait for b450 board or use b350 one instead if the diffrances wasn't worth it. I don't really know how to pick a mid tier PSU I only know the High end ones.

What is your opinion on the i7 8700k. (I ordered one)

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 02:43 PM PDT

Had a GPU catch fire not long ago. New one got here today, but still cautious...

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 02:42 PM PDT

So, the long and short of it is I was gaming as usual on a build I completed early 2016. The Computer would run fine until I started up a game, where it would turn off within the first 1 - 2 minutes. This happened 2-3 times in a row, until the computer refused to turn on at all. I gave it about a minute to cool off, dust the inside and tried to turn everything on again, and my GPU sparked and caught fire briefly, before I turned everything off, and took out the GPU, which had that horrible burnt electronics smell.

I took the GPU to a friends house and plugged it into his system to try and isolate that it was the problem, and low and behold it caught fire again. RMA was made to EVGA and my new card arrived today.

My one concern is that is it a sure fire way to tell it was my old GPU, and not something like for example, my power supply?

Old Card was an EVGA 980ti Power supply on the build is a Corsair RM850X that I bought about a year ago.

Everything about the PC has been fine up until now except for the first power supply I bought in 2016, which broke and was replaced with an brand new, identical model.

Is there any way to test the PSU? Should I be worried the PSU could have been the culprit to the card catching fire? Basically the last thing I want to do is plug in a brand new 1070ti to a PSU that is just going to do the same thing it did to my old card.

Any help is always greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time guys!

[Build Help] First time building, need help with video editing machine

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 12:25 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

Yes, I have read the sidebar and rules. For reference I am using Logical Increments (looking at the "Excellent" to "Exceptional" options), this youtube video, this video too, and the search function for 'video editing' as resources for picking my parts.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

100% video/photo editing inside of Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Lightroom, and Photoshop. I currently play my games on console (rip) since my friends are on there. I intend for this machine to be a work computer, and do not care at all about gaming performance.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

$1,500ish for the machine and monitor. I am trying to build this computer ASAP. Anything substantially over $1,500 will result in a slight delay in purchasing/building. However, if the performance is worth it I have no problem waiting a bit longer.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Like I said, this will be a work computer for my video production business, at the end of the day I want this to be a work machine. I currently edit 75% of my work in 1080p and the remaining 25% in 4k. I do not currently know anything about overclocking but have seen it mentioned quite often over the internet. 16GB RAM vs 32GB RAM? Do I need an additional cooling fan when the Ryzan comes with one? Finally, should I stick with the monitor I have selected so I can have two screens or is it worth sticking with one screen and getting this bad boy. Sorry for any stupid questions, I'm a little lost here.

If there is any more info you need please let me know.

    GTX 1080 Mini driver malfunction

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 02:32 PM PDT

I recently bought a used Zotac GTX 1080 mini under warranty. The card at first worked well for a day or two after which it started malfunctioning leading to blue screen of deaths, crashes and stuttering while gaming and general media consumption.

After reading the forums and looking online I realized that maybe the PSU is underpowered while a computer mechanic blamed the HDD.

I upgraded my PC. New PSU (Rmx 750), Additional Ram (8 gigs more, total of 16 Gigs) and New fans for better cooling.

After a clear windows install, the GPU worked again for a day after which the same errors started again.

Most of the crashes were related to driver malfunction but after numbers clean installs, the problem persists.

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

    Need a new case

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 02:29 PM PDT

I'm upgrading my PC and wanted to get a new case but wasn't sure what ones are good as I never really studied cases too much while doing my research. I prefer one with rgb LEDS that I can change between the colors and just has good airflow. I have the Am350m-gaming 3 motherboard, gtx 1070ti, and wraith spier cooler (but I eventually wanna water cool)

I assume I'll need a bigger case for all of it so any suggestions would be awesome. Also will I have to buy new cords to fit this case or can I use the old ones still? Thank you in advance

GPU and CPU running at low usage (GPU 50-60%) in games but not in benchmark programs

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 02:29 PM PDT

    Hello,

Here's my issue and here's why no one can seem to figure it out: In 3DMark and UserBenchmark, my GPU and CPU max out, like normal. However, in any game (it's even worse in VR) both will underperform, not even going above 50 or 60 percent. In VR games, missed frames will always happen when the game starts to take up more than 25%. There are definitely NO bottlenecks, as I have a 1080 and an i7-3770k. I've refreshed twice now. What could possibly be going on here?
