    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

I actually just built a PC by myself... My experience & advices.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 11:08 AM PDT

Before i even start i want to say this: i can't EVEN BELIEVE im posting this right now.... this would have no way been possible without the Youtube guides, help of this subreddit and the forums.

My Build: - This was my first post before building my PC go check it out : https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/87w0jp/after_almost_5_years_of_hd_7950_im_finally/

    My Experience:

Guys im not even kidding, if you are planning on building a PC, DO IT. It's one of the most amazing feelings you are ever gonna experience. Yes, for first time builders it might not be the easiest thing in this world, which is normal, you're doing it for the first time, BUT not only you're gonna learn something new, but i swear to god, you just feel like a better & new person after it, it's weird feeling.. and remember the first time build is a one time life experience.

I did feel nervous and frustrated at some points (Front panel connector, im looking at you). But, whenever i felt like that, i just when drank some water, took a 3 minutes break, and came back to it.

What i want to say is, building a PC for the first time might be a challenging experience, but it's EASY. The most important thing is, have fun at it, seriously have fun while building.

    My Advices:

Alright guys so im gonna list a few thing here, that i thing are so important in making building so much easier and also gonna link some very useful stuff.

    - Manuals: Guys, seriously, i can't stress this enough, MANUALS ARE LIFE SAVERS, especially the MOBO manual, and the Case Manual. i built on a Meshify C, the manual that came with it showed me where each screws go to like the standoffs for the MOBO, as well as the drives screws. If it weren't for the MOBO manual, i would have not successfully built my PC, it's so crucial for knowing where those Front I/O connectors go to.

-Magnetic Screwdrivers: This gonna make building 100 time easier than without it. This things are so wroth it, please consider them. Installing the CPU Cooler for me was hard, because handling all the stuff got me so nervous, that my hands got shaking at some point while screwing the screws. So the magnetic screw driver saved my life there.

-Build in the morning: In the morning the brain is still fresh, and the sunlight is there. It's generally better than when it goes a bit dark in the evening.

    - Some parts takes a bit of force: And yes i almost shit my pants pulling down that lever on the CPU Socket. Some parts like that take quiet a bit of force, but it's normal, also the HD AUDIO connector i had to force plugged it too. Dont force too hard, just do it while it's feel comfortable and gently

    - Dont neglect good cable management: and YES also on the back of the case! the build will feel so much cleaner and it's generally good for airflow, so study well where each cable goes and where the best root for it is. On that note, depending on your CPU cooler, you might want to install the 8 PIN CPU cooler on the motherboard (not the PSU yet) and then root it going from above to the back of the case. Because if you have a big boy CPU cooler, it might be hard to plug the 8 PIN later

    -Useful Links:

I built my PC for the first time, and it worked on the first try. You can do it too. Just don't stay calm and relaxed if something doesn't work, be patient and be ready to troubleshoot, eventually everything is gonna work fine

Windows takes forever to startup on m.2 samsung 960 evo

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 08:18 AM PDT

Installed windows 10 on first start-up and was fine. I cant even see the windows logo when starting my computer, it was that fast.

Fast forward after about a week i noticed when i restart my computer it takes about 8-15 minutes at the spinning circles with the Asus logo. Even my 7 year old laptop starts faster, should I reinstall windows? Or is it my ssd?

Wait for the Nvidia new GPU?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 12:49 PM PDT

Hey guys am getting myself a PC in August, I know that is a long way but this thing been going around my head that should I wait for the new GPU's to be released? Because some are saying that it'll be released around Sep/October. While others are saying July/August. I want to play games at 1080P 144Hz now i know a 1070 is enough for that or a 1080 GTX at High settings unless you get a bad PC port game, I just want a future prood GPU which can last for me around 5-7 years. My budget for the GPU is $1K. So, should I go with a 1080-Ti or wait for the new GPU's what do you guys think?

Is moving from an FX 8320 to i7 3820 worth buying a new mobo?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 12:34 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I just got a used i7 3820 from work, the motherboard of its PC fried and they decided to replace the whole thing, and they let me keep the CPU and cooler.

I currently have a guest PC with an FX-8320, 16gb ddr3 and an R9 290. Would replacing the mobo and cpu cause any significant gains? I know that both CPU's were released around the same year so I'm assuming it would be noticeable for a lot of single threaded games. But will it be worth buying the motherboard?

Also where would the best place to find a used lga 2011 board be. They still seem pricey on ebay.

High spec build - Experiencing stuttering across all games - LatencyMon reports high DPC on nvlddmkm.sys

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 06:14 AM PDT

    Specs:

    Type Item Price
    CPU *Intel - Core i5-8600K 3.6GHz 6-Core Processor $237.59 @ SuperBiiz
CPU Cooler Antec - Kuhler H2O 620 Liquid CPU Cooler -
    Motherboard *Asus - Prime Z370-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard $149.89 @ OutletPC
    Memory *Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory $189.89 @ OutletPC
Video Card *Asus - GeForce GTX 1080 8GB ROG STRIX Video Card $759.89 @ OutletPC
Power Supply *SeaSonic - FOCUS Plus Gold 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply $81.99 @ SuperBiiz
    Operating System *Microsoft - Windows 10 Pro OEM 64-bit $128.89 @ OutletPC
    Monitor *Asus - PG279Q ROG Swift 27.0" 2560x1440 165Hz Monitor $741.56 @ Amazon

Everything but the GTX 1080 and monitor are 1.5 months old. I had this problem with my previous setup as well (an i5-3570k OC'd to 4.2 GHz and 8 GB 1866 MHz RAM).

So LatencyMon is reporting high DPC on nvlddmkm.sys - the spikes occur exactly as I get stutter in games. The stutters can be small - with spikes from 70 us to 110-130 us (which are usually just 1-3 frame drops), can be several, slightly worse stutters (150-200 us) which will last for 1-3 seconds, and can be 1-3 gigantic stutters (1500-3000 us latency).

No OC on CPU, XMP enabled on RAM. CPU temps are good (as I type it's at 30-35), playing PUBG it goes to max 67, usually 62-65). GPU temps are about the same.

I mostly play Rocket League, PUBG and CS:GO. I've also had this issue in ROTTR and GTA V.

I have tried pretty much everything at this point:

    • Reseated GPU
    • Disabled all gaming features (game dvr, game bar, ...)
    • Run DDU and re-installed drivers
    • Removed Nvidia audio drivers (as well as not installing them at all)
    • Re-plugged monitors
    • Run SFC
    • Run system-wide troubleshooter
    • Tried playing using my phone's cellular network (suspected bad networks adapter, which is an ASUS N53)
    • Tried using the OC-mode on ASUS GPU Tweak II
    • Closed all apps except for steam and the game
    • Updated BIOS to newest version
    • Tried using TCPOptimizer to optimize network handling
    • Reinstalled Windows after upgrading build
    • Probably forgetting about 20 different attempts

From some cursory testing, it seems a little bit better when disconnecting my second monitor (a DELL U2412M). Spikes to 600 when alt-tabbing in and out of games, and small 1-3 fps stutters occasionally.

As far as I understand, DPC latency on this driver was an issue on most gtx 10x0 cards about 1.5 year ago -- Nvidia released a hotix and it fixed the issue for most people.

Anyone have any ideas? I've had this issue since last fall (after buying the GTX 1080), and now I am completely stumped.

    How does my build look?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 03:56 PM PDT

Here's my build. I own most of the equipment already, just tying up a few loose ends.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 03:49 PM PDT

    CPU

    Intel - Core i7-6700K 4GHz Quad-Core Processor (Already own)

    CPU Cooler

CRYORIG - H7 49.0 CFM CPU Cooler (Already own)

    Motherboard

    MSI - Z270 GAMING M7 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard $229.89 -$30.00 $199.89 OutletPC
    Buy
    $30.00 mail-in rebate

I've been looking at this. It seems nice and the M.2 is intriguing.

    Memory

    Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory $188.99 Free two-day shipping with Amazon Prime $188.99 Amazon

Really any DDR4 with over 3000 MHz.. I'm open to suggestions.

    Storage

Samsung - 960 EVO 250GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive $119.99 Free two-day shipping with Amazon Prime $119.99 Amazon
    Buy

This is very interesting to me, I haven't built a PC since 2013 when SSD's were the big thing. I currently own a Samsung 250GB SSD, which I have my OS and games installed on. I'm wondering if this would be a good replacement, or if I should use both.

I also got a few compatibility notes, if someone can explain this to me, it would be great:

The motherboard M.2 slot #1 shares bandwidth with a SATA 6.0 Gb/s port. When the M.2 slot is populated, one SATA 6.0 Gb/s port is disabled. The motherboard M.2 slot #3 shares bandwidth with SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports. When the M.2 slot is populated, two SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports are disabled.

    Seagate - Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive $59.79 $59.79 OutletPC

    Because why not.

EVGA - GeForce GTX 1070 8GB SC GAMING ACX 3.0 Black Edition Video Card (Already owned)

Thank got I bought one of these because the mining craze happened.

NZXT - S340 Elite (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case $79.99 Free two-day shipping with Amazon

I don't want to go overboard on a case, just something that my components can fit into and provides a few fans and some 2.5 and 3.5in drive mounts. Green is a plus.

    Power Supply

Corsair - CX (2017) 750W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply (Already owned)

I already have a Corsair 750 Watt PSU, which I bought 5 years ago. Not sure if these should be upgraded or not.

    Operating System

    Microsoft - Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit $99.89 -$10.00 $89.89 OutletPC
    Buy
    $10.00 mail-in rebate

Because I'm tired of pirating windows.

    Monitor

    LG - 34UM69G-B 34.0" 2560x1080 75Hz Monitor (Already owned)

    Great monitor.

    Peripherals (Own all of these)

Razer - Blackwidow Ultimate 2014 Wired Gaming Keyboard

I may upgrade in order to sync all of my peripherals to a color other than green.

Razer - Naga Chroma Wired Laser Mouse

    Razer - Kraken Headset

So I basically need a case, ram, mobo, and some storage at bare minimum.

    No Post. No jump start.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 03:02 PM PDT

Alright, this is the 2nd MOBO. The first MOBO the fans spun, the led on the board lit-up, but it wouldn't post, nor did the mobo speaker beep. I exchanged it.

New motherboard the led lights up but that's all. The fans won't turn on, no post. I attempted jump-starting it and still nothing.

Personally I'm thinking its just a bad series of board, but maybe I'm missing something?

If I need to include my HD I can I just assumed its a fairly negligible aspect.

Memory Recommendations - No Gaming - 3D Production

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 02:59 PM PDT

    I'm a first time builder = I7-8700K I might overclock to 4.9ghz

No video card in the beginning but I will add one or two down the line.

I'm building a PC for fluid simulations in Blender 3D. The simulations are memory heavy and create large file caches. It's very easy to use 32gb memory and have a 256gb file cache for one simulation. The thing about fluid simulations is that they cannot use the full potential of all processor cores because of the sequence of operations. Many operations rely on a previous operation finishing first so it cannot be assigned to another core/thread. So the processor won't be taxed at its max potential if that matters in my memory choice.

My question is regarding memory type recommendations. My processor requires 2666mhz sticks minimum.

With some overclocking of the processor should I shoot for 3000mhz or does that not matter? I don't plan on overclocking my memory itself but maybe I'll turn on the Intel XMP option to let it overclock automatically. But I wouldn't mind leaving it off.

Is a higher memory MHz more suited towards gaming and not 3D production in my case? With the prices I'm really trying to save all I can and I'm mostly looking at popular sellers & reliable names.

    Upgrade my GPU? Any benefits?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 02:58 PM PDT

So I finished my build about a week ago. My build has an EVGA Geforce 780 ti SC. I have no problems getting steady frames at high to max settings. I've been toying with the idea of buying a 1070 ti when I get the money. What major differences will I see besides hitting upwards of 100 frames on some games?

    Building a PC (Help, suggestions?)

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 07:22 AM PDT

    Hello!

I have been wanting to build a PC for a few years now, mainly for the purpose of gaming. When my laptop died a few months ago, I decided to do so.... with spare parts lying around that might well be 5 years old or even worse. But of course, I wanted to game on my rig, so I upgraded with a GTX 1050 Ti.

This worked out for most games, as most of them weren't very CPU reliant, but then I started playing Fortnite. Turns out my RAM and CPU are bottlenecking my PC at the worst moments possible, and my settings are pretty low.

As a result of this, I've decided to upgrade my PC once again, but now to the point I can actually call it one. Having had a look at current prices, I came up with this build (That is very similar to what I had in mind before):

    • GPU: GTX 1050 Ti (Already have this one, no discussing needed)

    • CPU: Ryzen 1600 (Is this necessary? Could I save some money and buy a Ryzen 1400?)

    • Motherboard: Asus Prime B350-Plus (Pretty much my only option over here, other MoBo's seem to be the same price with the same capabilities, and I doubt the real importance lies here. Suggestions still welcome though.

    • RAM: G.Skill Aegis 1x8GB 3000 MHz (I know 2x4GB is better, but it also seems to cost double the price. If I want to save any money, this seems to be my best bet)

    • My Power Supply I believe is a Corsair VS350, which I believe should be enough

Note: I am on a budget, there is a reason I haven't upgraded before. If spending little extra give me many more options then it's worth it, but if it's not necessary I'd rather not spend too much. Also, I live in the Netherlands, parts are more expensive here and not as much is available.

    Thanks for your help!

Need Advice on Dedicated Sim VR rig

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 01:38 PM PDT

    Hi Reddit,

I recently build myself a new computer over the holidays using the new ryzen chips and have been loving it paired with my 1070. Welp, now ive acquired a 1080ti (at mrsp) and would love to build a dedicated rig for my VR/Sim setup. My current computer is in my bedroom with a wad of cords running into the living room running the vive/racing cockpit/HOTAS and id like to remove them (there are 5 usb & 1 hdmi extension on the floor i want gone)

    So here is my dilemma:

Im going broke after building a computer w/ 3 monitors, cockpit, hotas etc. (dont worry my car/house/CC debt is =$0) but i would like to go cheap (i donated my old computer to a kid i volunteer with so thats gone btw)

I spent a fair amount of time with cable management on my current case so id like to keep it together as is, its the silent version of the p400 and i have noctua fans so it whisper quite in the bedroom.

    Current Rig:

    ryzen 5 1600x

    16gb 3000mhz/c15 ram

    evga 1070

    1tb ssd

    1tb hhd

    750w psu

    p400s

    I have already purchased:

    -1080ti

    -250 nvme drive

    -250 ssd

    -600w psu

    I Need:

    -case

    -cpu

    -mobo

    -ram

What is the best cpu/mobo (mATX or mITX)/ram combo on the cheap for highest frame rate VR game play only. (i always read vr is gpu bound so what cpu can keep up with it in vr only) Im not against seating a 2400g in my current rig and putting the 1600x in the VR rig if thats best, my bedroom gaming monitor is a 1080p/144hz btw.

Please dont just say 8700k id like to spend <$500

Also, any suggestion for cheap high airflow case, it will probably be hidden so i dont care too much about ascetics/ noise but the smaller the better, id even go mITX if it pushes air still.

    Upgrade or Build

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 07:28 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I've been active the last few days asking about the new Ryzen processors. What's occurred is what started as just upgrading my machine has turned into a thousand dollar build really quick. I really can't afford that right now, so I'm not sure what to do. My current machine is listed below (roughly, individual parts like the SSD may be substituted.) Could I drop a gtx 1060 into this and continue to run it for atleast a year? New CPU?

GPU and RAM prices are wrecking my budget for building.

First timer wants to build a badass rig!

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 05:33 AM PDT

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming, music production, media center, browsing.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

For the time being it will be set up in my living room on my tv, so 1080p @ 60hz. but I'll upgrade to a proper monitor in a year or two when I move, and would like good (not necessarily top of the line but still good) performance at that time

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    1750 - 2000 Canadian.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I have a unique funding situation that I won't get into, but essentially I have to buy all of this at one store on one receipt. I put all of this together on memoryexpress.com and the budget works out where I'd like it.

Memory Express has a deal for the case, liquid CPU cooler, and power supply bundled together for $180 cad, so that's my reasoning behind choosing those parts.

Does the ryzen 5 2400 suit a gtx 1070? Is it worth waiting a week for the ryzen 5 2600 to release, or switching to a different cpu and mobo all together.

Another concern I have is the potential incompatibility warning pcpartspicker gave me about potentially needing to update the bios on the mobo I selected. I can change the mobo but I chose this one because I liked that it had space for a second GPU for future expansion and I like the aesthetic with the LEDs all for a good price.

Any tips/criticism for a total first time builder would be greatly appreciated!
