HP Spectre x360 and Lenovo Yoga 720

Mostly identical, but the Yoga has a GTX 1050 compared to the MX150 on the Spectre. In tradeoff the Yoga only has a 7th gen i7 instead of the HP's 8th gen.

If I plan on playing slightly intensive games, would I be better off with the Yoga because of the superior GPU? Does the CPU being a gen behind matter much? Is there anything else I'm overlooking/should be considering? The HP usually costs considerably more. I also plan on using the laptop primarily for college so gaming isn't the main focus, and I know neither of these are gaming powerhouses, but it'd be a plus.

Here are the retrospective store pages-

    HP Spectre x360

    Lenovo Yoga 720 https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-yoga-720-2-in-1-15-6-4k-ultra-hd-touch-screen-laptop-intel-quad-core-i7-16gb-memory-512gb-ssd-platinum-silver/5722755.p?skuId=5722755

Feel free to suggest other laptops in a similar price range as well.

US, <=$1000, 15"+, for business and casual gaming

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 04:33 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: <=$1000, USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 6+ hour battery life when not gaming is preferred.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Don't care too much about thinness. For weight, the lighter the better. I carry my laptop around a lot over my shoulder and have been developing shoulder pain. My current laptop is about 5.75 lbs. I guess 4 lbs or less, if that's realistic? The Dell Inspiron laptops that I see everyone recommending are unfortunately too heavy.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. At least 15".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Games: League of Legends, Maplestory, Civilization Video/sound: Lots of Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, etc. Programs: Heavy use of all of the Microsoft Office programs and Google Docs programs. Also trying to learn InDesign, Photoshop, etc. I need something that can run Canva.com platform without lag. I currently use a Lenovo G510 (have had since 2014) and it can't handle Canva well. I typically have 7+ windows/tabs open when I'm working on a desktop, with all of these things running. My current laptop can't do that.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League of Legends, Maplestory, Civilization, and stuff like that on the high settings. My friend told me these aren't considered heavy games, so hopefully these games on the highest settings don't require too much.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like a number keypad, and good keyboard. Good quality sound that can reach a high volume - I like the sound I get on my Lenovo G510 (compared to my boyfriend's laptop, anyway, lol). Something that doesn't make too much noise. I use a mouse with my laptop regularly so ideally the laptop would have at least 2 ports. A DVD or Blu-ray thing would be a plus.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am not too knowledgeable about specifications of laptops, so I apologize if I'm not explaining too well. I hope my request makes sense. Thank you for your help!

Looking for a gaming laptop that can also be used for school

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 08:01 PM PDT

Thanks to anyone willing to give some advice! Just for background I'm a student looking for a laptop for school, personal use, and gaming. Doesn't have to be elite in gaming but good enough to run games in decent quality smoothly. Here's the form:

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    <$1000, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

At least decent battery life with best specs for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

As long as it's not huge and clunky - I will be bringing it to school with me every day in my backpack. Less than 7 pounds would be nice

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    ~15 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Will be using for school and gaming primarily

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Fortnite, Rocket League, PUBG, Far Cry 5, NBA 2k, etc. 60 FPS would be nice at good quality - maybe not ultra quality

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard, SSD (not sure how important this is?), reliable with good build quality (will be carrying it around in a backpack a lot)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I would like if it didn't really look like a gaming laptop with all the colors flashiness. Thanks so much for any advice!

Looking for gaming laptop to replace MacBook Air

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 11:41 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$1200 USD would probably be max, but would prefer in the range of $700-1000.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Any.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not really. But I want a laptop on the light side, so not too big.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I want to use it for some gaming. I have a console, so heavy gaming isn't a must. However, I would love if I could run a game like TW3.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? TW3 or equivalent at Medium to High would be great.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard because I will primarily use it to write. Gaming is a secondary consideration.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was considering buying a MacBook Air 2017 to replace my 2014. But it just seems like a bad deal. So I am thinking about a PC (for the first time in a decade!). The primary purpose will be for writing, and I would like to be able to use it in a cafe or on a plane, which is why I'm looking for lightweight, but if I am switching to a PC I also want to be able to download and play Steam games. My problem here is that I haven't been using or following PC developments for a decade and so have no clue which affordable brands/models are good and which are crap, which is why I'm asking for your help! I was looking at the Asus VivoBook--thoughts on this brand and model? https://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-i7-7700HQ-Processor-GeForce-keyboard/dp/B071ZL3996/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1524880156&sr=8-3&keywords=ultra+light+gaming+laptop

Looking for a laptop for college with some gaming capability($1500)

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 11:22 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1500 but I can spend a little more if it's worth it. USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I plan on using it in college, so I'm looking for good battery life and good specs for some gaming every now and then.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Both are important since I'll be carrying it around often. I mostly don't want it to like a stereotypical gaming laptop with all of the sharp angles and colors.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Around 14/15 inches preferred

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Occasional gaming, some photo editing, and possibly video editing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'll be playing games like R6S, PUBG, and Fortnite. I don't mind turning graphics quality down for better performance, and I'm fine with running games at 40 fps.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality would be nice since I'm going to be using it a good amount during college. Also, emphasis on not looking like a typical gaming laptop.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've looked at the Asus Zenbook UX550VE and was wondering if it's worth it. I know that there are many laptops with better specs and lower prices, but, once again, I strongly dislike the look of "gamer" laptops. I've seen comparisons between the 1050ti and 1060, but I'm not sure if it's worth it to spend more for the upgrade to the 1060.

Reliable for playing music and not too heavy

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 11:17 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 380 USD (about 3,000HKD). Hong Kong.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Do not require 2 in 1 function. I would prefer something with a good battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too big, need to transport in a backpack around once or twice a week.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows/Chrome.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Do not have preference. My last was 13" which was sufficient to requirement. Probably no bigger than that.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. * I use it for DJing (not mixing, just playing songs in full, lining them up and playing for a dance group), word processing and light gaming. I'll buy an external sound card for the music (if you have a recommendation for this too that would be amazing...). Sometimes deal with light photo/video editing but have the office pc for anything really heavy.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Very light gaming use; Portal, KTANE.. not a big factor.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Comfortable keyboard as I do a lot of writing, reliable build quality, ability to connect to external soundcard. HDMI connection point.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My previous laptop was a TX300CA. It was a suitable size, the tablet option was useful but I realize that it's totally not necessary for me moving forward. Enjoyed the memory; great because I could store a lot of tracks for DJing without taking an external drive everywhere. Processing power was sufficient for most requirements.

15"+, US, CAD/Programming/General Use Laptop for an Engineer, <$2000

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 06:23 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: United States, Prefer <$2000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Prefer specifications first and then battery. Don't need 2 in 1 but wouldn't be opposed

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? As light as possible while maintaining good specs. Would prefer <5 lbs if possible.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15"+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be using Solidworks for moderately complex assemblies and some MATLAB. Would prefer 16gb of ram if that's recommended for CAD applications but would be fine with an upgradable 8gb

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality, would like a number pad on the keyboard but not having one isn't a dealbreaker

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I will be using this laptop mostly for general use, video watching and programming, but will also use it not-infrequently for CAD work. I'm willing to spend more up front to have a laptop that will last a decently long time. I'd be willing to wait a month or so if there's next gen laptops coming out that would be worth the wait. Also, is getting an SSD that much better than a HDD for any of my purposes?

    Portable Gaming Laptop- open budget

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 08:29 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Can say unlimited but to put a number on it USD 2,800. I'm based in Hong Kong.

      • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Dislike 2 in 1 Good battery life a plus Looking for good specs
      • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very, looking for a light, portable, ideally 13-14 inch laptop and not too thick. I dislike how thick the alienware 13 is for instance. Gigabyte aero 14 looks good but can't seem to find stock anywhere, only the 15 inch versions (what's up with that?)
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-14 inch

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Work in construction so occasional CAD, BIM and VR use required (we have HTC Vive setup at different sites for visualising the works). Also a semi-serious gamer. Main obsessions include SC2, Witcher 3 and a lot of FPS (Doom, CSS, etc.)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? SC2 is the big one so not very demanding even on ultra. Occasionally enjoy more demanding games but I won't insist on ultra for everything. More interested in the gameplay than eye candy.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality very important. I move around a lot from site to site and want to know it will last. No need touch screen (in fact prefer not to have it). A nice keyboard and touch pad is always nice but will usually use a mouse. don't need a finger print reader, optical drive or specific inputs. Would be nice to have the option of plugging into a KVM so will need a video out and at least two usb ports.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've done plenty of research on my own- there's not too much ground to cover if I'm insisting on a 13-14 inch gaming laptop. I'm leaning towards a gigabyte aero 14 but can't find the 8th generation anywhere and even the 7th generation is hard to find- can't locate it locally here in HK, nothing on amazon.com and only 1-2 units on amazon.co.uk. Is it just very much in demand or is it already too old?

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000-1200. $1200 is being supplied as a graduation gift, if I wanted to spend any more it would be my own budget. For a truly good purchase, I'd be willing to add roughly $200.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't know what 2 in 1 form factor is, so not a preference of mine. This will be used as a work laptop, but I'm also an avid gamer. So probably best specifications as a priority, with battery being second.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't think it's overtly important to me.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I've had a Lenovo laptop and built a PC, so I've used windows all my life. If I got a Mac, it'd be my first time.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I play League, Overwatch, and varying steam games. However to this point, I've been limited to playing anything heavier than League on my desktop, which is currently out of operation.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I would love to be able to game, but it isn't the single biggest priority. If somehow the computer had the ability to play Overwatch or AAA titles well, I'd be amazed.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No big preferences.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm graduating college and am needing a laptop upgrade, my current laptop is on its last leg. I've been an avid gamer for years, and don't plan on stopping, but I am also in the process of upgrading my broken gaming PC. This will also be my work laptop, should my future job require I supply my own. My parents instinct were to look at mac's, but I want to explore my full array of options. Thanks for any help!

    Gaming Laptop vs Regular laptop?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 02:21 PM PDT

I've been searching for laptops endlessly.

I won't be carying it much, mostly on lap in bed for watching movies, some ocasional gaming as well.

I've got a gaming desktop so gaming is not my top priority.

Since I want it to be nice to watch movies the screen is important. So IPS and nice colors is crucial.

    Battery life is not important.

As far as I see it, the gaming laptops are the best deals, but will their screen be worse than regular laptops that I will notice a difference?

Right now I'm looking at these: HP notebook 15: i7 8550, IPS full hd glossy, MX 150. 256gb ssd, 8gb RAM.

HP Omen 15: i5-7300HQ, IPS full hd mate, GTX 1050 2GB, 256gb ssd, 8gb RAM

    Lenovo Legion Y520-15IKB-951: i5-7300HQ, IPS full hd mate, GTX 1050 2GB, 128gb ssd + 1TB HDD, 8gb RAM

Lenovo Legion Y520-15IKB-578: i7-7700HQ, IPS full hd mate, GTX 1050TI 4GB, 256gb ssd, 8gb RAM

Any of these you'd recommend? How are their screen quality?

    Thanks for any help!

<=$1000 (AUD; approx) Laptop for Statistics and Computer Science Student?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 05:41 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

<=$1000 (AUD; approx) Really don't want to go too much further than $1000. >=$1500 is defs no.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    • priority for good battery life. probably unrealistic but somewhere around 8hrs whilst using wifi without charging possibly running some scripts to do some simulations (matrix multiplications, numerical optimisation, etc.) for like 1 hr of those 8 (not necessarily in 1 go).
    • approx 500GB SSD storage. the speed, lightweight, and most importantly more shock resistance is great for me compared to HDD.
    • 16GB RAM very preferred. can slide with 8GB if there really aren't any choices for my constraints but I'll be concerned about how long it would stay relevant since more things are taking up more RAM e.g. chrome.
    • WiFi AC
    • having USB3.1 or USB3.0 ports (standard but hey might as well add it in)

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Weight isn't the highest of my priorities. As long as it's not more than 2kg it's fine.
    • Thinness is a bit lower in priorities than weight. As long as it's not > 5cm thick I should be fine (will be carrying it in a backpack).

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Windows preferred. But I'm not opposed to using a Linux OS like Ubuntu (though I don't have much experience with them, wouldn't mind chucking myself in the deep end and learning/getting used to it).

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13 to 14 inches approx

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

None of them. maybe use like MSpaint or equiv for some quick diagrams but nothing graphically intensive.

Mainly the intensive thing I'll be doing would be running scripts like I described above in MATLAB, C or Python. Might use Java for some classes but not for the same purposes.

    • MATLAB
    • MS office (excel, word, powerpoint, onenote) or equiv
    • adobe pdf or equiv pdf viewers
    • some media player like MPC
    • web browser (obvs)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • reliable build quality would be nice but I don't mind a plastic body (I have a slight fear of static shocks since they happen to me so often).
    • Keyboard layout isn't terrible i.e. simply don't have weirdly/inconveniently placed keys e.g. not having like the backspace key or enter key linked/next to the power button for the laptop such that it'll be easy to accidentally turn off your laptop.
    • numpad optional
    • touch pad not being awkwardly placed would be nice
      • don't need it to be ultra responsive, but as long as it doesn't jump to random places and I don't need to do multiple large strokes to get somewhere on the screen, I should be fine.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • I might be able to RDP into one of the computers at school but there's a limited amount of connections available and logging in takes a long time.
    • I can also ssh into a linux server but this is used by many other university students who would likely fork-bomb it whenever the intro to systems programming course is being taught
      • and would limit my choice of languages
    • also for the above 2, I don't want to rely too much on having internet to connect to then run things cause wifi coverage + reliability issues.
    • I know these are probably unrealistic standards for the price range but honestly idk what to get.

Help (noob here) is this a good gaming laptop?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 05:32 PM PDT

I have an hp laptop, and it has 12gb of ram, 2tb of storage, and an AMD Radeon R7 series for the graphics card. Should this work for gaming? I'm trying out garrys mod, and it is very laggy, and then I tried 2nd life since it was free, and I thought I had the system requirements for it, and it is also not running great. Any help would be much appreciated!

Looking for Powerful Laptop <$900 with SSD and 1TB HDD - Don't Care about Weight, Battery Life, Screen Size/Resolution

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 11:28 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    $900, USA

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

    Best specifications for the money.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

    None

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Light 3D rendering on After Effects and Blender and some mid-level gaming. Looking for something that can do the quickest rendering for my budget.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

    N/A

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

A decent sized SSD and at least 1TB HDD. I'd also like a touch screen, but am willing to sacrifice that for a good deal.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Weight, battery life and appearance mean absolutely nothing to me. I just need something I can occasionally lug to a different room/house. As long as it's powerful, it can weigh 15 pounds, look clunky as a scrapyard, and last only 5 minutes on battery. Also don't care about screen resolution.

    Thanks for any advice!

Switching from Desktop to Laptop: What were the caveats that caught you off-guard?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 09:17 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

    • ~$1000 USD, US

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    • Best heat management

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Not a rock, but also not looking for sleekness

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    • Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • 15.6

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Gaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • World of Warcraft, Civ 6, variety of other simulation games

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, -optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Good heat management
    • Good docking solution multi-monitor setup

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • My desktop is something that has longevity in that it has never broken and I upgrade it rarely, and I'm concerned with switching to a laptop that poor heat management will shorten the lifespan of the laptop. Is this something people who have made the switch notice?
    • What caveats of making the Desktop to Laptop switch have people noticed that you'd like to share before someone else makes the switch?

[US] Looking for laptop solely to connect to my video projector via HDMI (any screen size, <$300)

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:53 PM PDT

I have an old apple mac air which doesn't have an HDMI port (apple products always seem to be missing something these days). I'm happy to continue using the mac for everything but I'd like a new laptop just to connect to my video projector (I like to stream movies onto a huge screen)

There are only a few requirements I can think of: 1. Built-in HDMI port

    1. Wifi connection as strong as possible - I may be completely wrong but from my experience wifi connection strength varies considerably between devices and even laptop brands/types. Given I'd like to use this laptop a couple (very thick) floors up from my wifi router.

    2. An ethernet cable port for back up (not sure if this is still a standard in laptops nowadays?

    3. And last but not least ideally as cheap as possible (ideal would be <$300), although would consider more expensive models if all other criteria was met (~$700)

Overall I just need the laptop to play films via streaming services such as Netflix, and then display these on my projector via an HDMI.

    Thank you for reading
