My GPU caught fire. Is it safe to plug a new GPU into the same slot? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 04:43 PM PDT I saw flames erupt from my GPU today, which was neat and horrifying. Why? I have no idea. My PC is now running okay with integrated graphics, but I want my gaming back! However, I'm nervous about buying a new GPU and putting it in the same slot. What if there's a problem with the PCI slot or the MOBO and the next card gets fried? There's no visible damage to either of these things, but it's hard to know. I guess what I'm looking for is for someone to say "You're probably fine trying another GPU" or to say "don't do that unless you want more money to go up in flames." Here are some pics of the GPU: [link] [comments]
Windows Defender update KB4052623 has been failing to install with error 0x80070643 for months Posted: 27 Apr 2018 05:53 PM PDT I have tried all the things i could find online, including "sfc /scannow", trying to install the update with Windows Defender disabled and run the update troubleshooter, i've tried running wumt and loads of other things. My Windows is clean and i have no other antivirus, and i don't want to refresh my installation. How can i fix this problem? [link] [comments]
What is this kind of ads called and how do I stop them? Posted: 28 Apr 2018 04:08 AM PDT When visiting some sites and often some ads infested websites, I often encounter those kind of ads that triggered when I clicked on something. It's like there's some transparent button that covering some areas of the web and proceed to open several tabs of ads. What is this called? And how do I stop this because I'm annoyed by this? I have uBo installed, my browser is Firefox. No malware or any such thing as far this system runs. I know there's some switch somewhere to prevent this from happening, I just wanna know what is that called. [link] [comments]
PC shuts down half a second after starting up. Posted: 28 Apr 2018 03:52 AM PDT My Old CPU Casing has a defective Power and Reset Button, so i figured it was time to change my Casing. After swapping my casing today, i can't switch it back on. After pressing the pwr start button, it starts the fans and LEDs for half a second before everything powers down. I merely shifted from one casing to another, the only hardware change is the 120mm Casing Fan which is still the same size. I have tried, Reseating my Ram, GPU, HDD, SSD, LEDs, all of which didnt work. Subsequently, in an attempt to identify faulty hardware, i tried turning on with only a Motherboard, CPU, PSU with no avail. Anymore options i can try? [link] [comments]
Under performing 980ti. Could it be a power issue? Posted: 28 Apr 2018 12:41 AM PDT Hi everyone, The other week we had a blackout and although my computer was attached to a cyber power ups something seems to have gone wrong and my pc wouldn't turn on. Luckily everything else attached to the ups was ok (or at least appears so). I took into my local Centrecom for them to test it and they said it was the psu that had died. I got a new one (Corsair HX750i) whilst waiting for the warranty one to come back. They installed it and when I went to pick it up they said during a test they noticed my gpu (980ti) was "lagging a bit" and recommended me getting Windows 10 as a possible fix (I currently have 7). Since getting it home I have noticed a lot of frame drops across all games and seemingly regardless of quality settings. Where I was often getting a fairly stable 120fps now I am getting fluctuating fps between 50-100. Does not seem to be related to whats happening on screen either. I have checked the heat temp though GPUTweakII and it doesn't appear to be overheating, Usually staying between 50-80c. Could this be a power issue? My old psu was a 850w corsair (cant remember the exact model) Btw Userbenchmark didn't seem to detect a problem with the gpu but I don't know exactly how accurate that test is. My specs: UserBenchmarks: Game 95%, Desk 74%, Work 51% CPU: Intel Core i7-3770 - 75% GPU: Nvidia GTX 980 Ti - 111.6% SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 500GB - 111.1% SSD: Intel 520 Series 120GB - 69.9% HDD: WD Green 2TB (2011) - 57.2% RAM: HyperX Savage DDR3 1600 C9 2x4GB - 51.4% MBD: Asrock Z77 Extreme4-M Thank you in advance for any advice, very appreciated! Use wireless RF headphones and tv sound simultaneously? Posted: 28 Apr 2018 02:19 AM PDT Current setup is a Sony Bravia KD43XE8005 tv, and a Sky+ HD box. We currently don't have a soundbar but are open to buying one for general use, and I use an old laptop with an hdmi cable for projection to the tv. I bought some Thomson wireless RF headphones for dad so he could listen to tv/music when not in the living room. These work great but the headphone jack is on the back of the tv and is not so easily accessed. If it was left in all the time, it would currently cut sound to the speaker. Yesterday I connected my laptop and played a video through the tv, and attempted to connect the headphones base station through the headphone out on the laptop, but this attempted solution did not work. That may be because of something I did wrong. An article on cnet explains that "If your sound bar is connected through either optical or digital outputs, you can leave the wireless headphones connected without interfering with normal audio playback." with the implication that a soundbar connected in the optical out would enable the headphones to be left in the tv 24/7, and that this would also enable me to watch in the room while dad was outside. Is this correct? And is there an alternative solution that does not require purchasing the soundbar? It would be nice not to have to spend any more albeit the headphones I bought are so cheap that it wouldn't exactly feel like I'd made a mistake; shaking my fist at bad tv design aside. Posted: 28 Apr 2018 01:22 AM PDT I bought recording pendrive some time ago but formatted it under linux and it is no longer able to record sounds. Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:52 PM PDT I have an 8GB HP OMEN with Windows 10. Processor: intel core i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.59GHz. I received a message when attempting to log into my yahoo mail that my connection was not private and someone might be attempting hack me (paraphrasing, don't remember exact text). In addition, when I looked at my desktop, I had a new icon that I didn't add that had the name of one of my facebook friends in the title (said 21m"name" with a chrome icon and when I hovered over it, it said something about "messages" but I don't have fb messenger). I deleted it, but it is still in my trash bin. Anyway, I ran Malware Bytes, which turned up nothing. I checked my date/time (correct), turned off all extensions, cleared and deleted Chrome and then reinstalled it, changed my yahoo and facebook password, checked all the MAC addresses on my router's page (all fine), and turned on the option to use random hardware addresses. Afterward, when I clicked on something on my router's page, it said the connection was not private. Maybe there's something obvious I'm not doing here? Any help you could offer is appreciated. Thanks! edit: Also, I use Window's Defender and have it set so that it uses "public" settings and I am not discoverable. [link] [comments]
When i turn my monitor on, it's fine for 0-10 seconds and then goes black. Posted: 28 Apr 2018 04:20 AM PDT Please note that the monitor doesn't turn off, the screen just goes black. I can turn the monitor off and on again and it'll show up fine for another 0-10 seconds and then it goes black again, i've tried replacing the VGA and that doesn't help. Any ideas? all help is appreciated, thanks! [link] [comments]

Posted: 28 Apr 2018 04:13 AM PDT This time none of the reset buttons are working it and Shift+Restart just only restarts my computer. The process that keeps starting every time I start my computer is called Decently.exe, it keeps appearing at the bottom of my local appdata folder under an empty folder named "wmcagent". I have been trying everything I possibly can to figure it out for the past four hours and I have made no progress.. [link] [comments]
How to increase dedicated video RAM? Posted: 28 Apr 2018 04:12 AM PDT My new computer has an integrated graphics card with only 64MB dedicated video RAM on it (1600 shared memory, 8GB RAM). I want to increase it, but I can't seem to get it right. I don't have the option to increase it manually in BIOS, or at least I can't find it (J01 v02.15) and the regedit DedicatedSegmentSize trick doesn't work either (I've tried QWORD and DWORD at 512 and 1024 both decimal and hexadecimal). The programs that advertise they can do it all seem to be phishing sites. I'm on Windows 7 64bit. Please help. [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Apr 2018 04:05 AM PDT Problems only on PC (Windows 10, 64-bit) - No problems on my Samsung S6
I'm no tech expert but I suspect that my PC is the problem since other mobile devices don't have this problem (none that I know of). It started happening just over a week ago and I've never had any problems with the internet in the past so maybe a Windows Update caused them? [link] [comments]

What should be done about this potential malware/virus situation? Posted: 28 Apr 2018 04:01 AM PDT On a Win 10 x64 machine. This file was scanned with Windows Defender and no threat was found. It was run and the UAC popup was accepted. A dialog box with Russian text popped up and it was then closed by the user. File was then deleted. Rkill/Windows Defender/MWB found nothing afterwards with full scans. Is it safe to assume there's no problem? Bit worried because it was uploaded within the past week. Is it possible for example that MWB detects a threat in the file itself, but is missing something it did to the system? What should be the next step here, besides a fresh windows install? Posted: 28 Apr 2018 03:43 AM PDT Hi, so I dug up my old nintendo ds lite and wanted to download some games on it via memory card in the R4 card(?) I got with it. I don't want to mess it up so I figured I'd ask around here on how to download games on it properly. This is the R4 card in case it helps: http://imgur.com/MAM0GiV [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Apr 2018 03:29 AM PDT I recently fucked up by downloading a setup file that was virus (rather obvious but I was burnt out and did not pay much attention at all). I ran malware bytes and afterwards Windows Defender (full scans) and it did find some stuff which I got rid off. But after a reboot or two malwarebytes started to stop a connection out to a website called de-mi-nis-ner.info which apparently has been linked to a cryptomining virus. At the same time I had a Chrome background process use up to 80% of the CPU but I don't think the GPU was touched. Every time I stopped the process but I never found out what it was and it seems to have all together stopped doing it since but there is still something that uses Chrome to try to access de-mi-nis-ner.info everytime Windows boots up. Is there a way to know which program uses Chrome to access the internet? I've also checked my addons for Chrome. [link] [comments]
Corrupted files in my external hard drive. Posted: 27 Apr 2018 06:40 PM PDT Hello everyone, I do hope you are all well. A few months ago I bought an external hard drive where I just save stuff from college, courses and games; the size of most of these files are >30-50gb, but I've been facing a problem: everytime I transfer a file or a number of files to my hard drive, and then I paste those files to another computer, I get an error that says that the majority of the files can't be copied because are corrupted: "can't read from source disk or file" I've formatted the Hard drive a few times and try, but always ends the same.. Hard drive: Samsung M3 Portable 500gb. I wish someone can have an idea of what's happening to my hard drive :-( Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Apr 2018 03:24 AM PDT I'm needing to share data, encrypted with a password, offline (via sneaker net) to another user with a vanilla Windows 7 installation, no 7-Zip or other archive applications installed. Windows Explorer can't seem to open AES-encrypted ZIP archives, but ZipCrypto is known to be flawed. Anyone here would have an alt idea? [link] [comments]
2 year old Asus strix r9 390 GPU all of a sudden not working correctly Posted: 28 Apr 2018 03:05 AM PDT Turned my computer on one day, and noticed the GPU was running as though it has no drivers installed, ie: won't play video files, open GL or direct X. But strangely still running through the GPU hdmi, I'm not using motherboard graphics, I have a video signal coming from the card. I've checked that the card is seated correctly, lights up and the fans are running. I'm unable to install any drivers without them failing (I've tried AMD and ASUS drivers). I'm not sure what else I can try without trying to get it replaced/repaired under warranty. Any advice would be amazing, thanks in advance. Windows 7 sp1 Intel i5-6500 Asus strix r9 390 16gb ram I've uploaded some screen shots [link] [comments] |
