Mobile workstation (for video production and 3D modeling and rendering) Budget: €1,000-€1,700

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 12:47 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Country: Italy Budget: €1,000-€1,700 (but better less than €1500)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer best specifications.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Less important than the performance.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows and Mac.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferably 15" or 17"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I work with videos (editing and VFX) 3D art and photo editing. Most used software: Adobe Creative Cloud (specifically Adobe After Effects, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro), 3D modeling and rendering (Cinema 4D and Maya), DAW (Ableton, Cubase). Currently playing Overwatch and I would like to play more graphically demanding games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Gaming is not the first purpose for the laptop but I enjoy gaming. I play Overwatch and I would like to be able to try other kind of more demanding games like Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and NieR:Automata. Ideally it would be great with 60 or more FPS.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good and comfortable keyboard. At least 2 USB ports (better if 3), a headphone jack and microphone jack. I work a lot with SD so it would be great to have a slot for SD cards. A reliable and solid build quality is also important.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am aware that for video editing and 3D a laptop is not the ideal but I need a mobile workstation. I used to have a MacBook Pro but it did struggle with the rendering of certain videos (I work also with 4k videos and video installations of big dimensions) so I would rather look into other and hopefully better options.

    Engineering Student 14'' $1,000-$1,500

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 08:39 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1,000-1,500 USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm thinking about getting a 2 in 1 with pen capability if not i wouldn't care if it was touch screen. An all day battery would be nice.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, i would like it to be less than 4 lbs.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. preferably a 14 in but i would consider a 15 in with a smaller frame.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop, video processing, visual studios, light games

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't play many games but i would like the capability

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? portable and reliable

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have been looking at the ASUS ZenBook Flip 14 UX461UN-DS74T Ultra-Slim Convertible 14" but i would like to see some other options.

Laptop for student/gaming with budget of 700-1000€

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 03:47 AM PDT

Hi, i plan to buy a new laptop with budget of 700-1000€, but i prefer to stay closer to the lower limit.

Requirements: * 15.6" FHD display (IPS or not? IDK, give me advice?)

    • dedicated graphic card- i guess the best options are 1050/1050Ti/ maybe 1060? I do not plan to play the newest games on high details, as i have desktop for games next to me
    • it would be nice to have SSD for faster system, but this is not a must have (a prefer better GPU over SSD)

I have found that in case of nvidia 1050, there are many models with different model/VRAM (e.g. 1050 2GB/4GB, 1050Ti 2GB/4GB)

-is there any real difference that is worth paying extra between 1050 and 1050Ti, or in size of VRAM?

-i just want to know if it is worth to pay like extra 100 or 150€ for 1050Ti instead of 1050?

As i said, i do not plan to play newest games on full details, but more like fortnite, lol, wow.

    Thanks

Looking for a decent laptop for gaming & digital art; ideally to be docked when at home

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 03:39 AM PDT

No budget as I'm just getting ideas; ideally best specs possible, touchscreen / pen support if possible.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? As long as it does the job, I wouldn't mind carrying a heavy laptop!

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" or higher

    • Any specific requirements? *

    1) Needs to have pressure sensitivity for styluses or pens.

    2) Ideally have a 144hz display, although 60hz would be fine.

    3) Ideally would be able to be docked or combine with docking solutions for an additional 1-3 monitors; may be unrealistic to want something like this but it's more of a would like rather than a must-have

    4) The longer the battery life, the better

If possible, the 2-in-1 tablet-to-laptop form factor would be perfect, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if it's not possible; main things I'm looking for are battery life, screen quality, touchscreen pressure sensitivity and gaming performance to hit at least 1080p 60fps in modern titles on high-ultra settings.

    Thanks!

Budget $2000 AUD, Australia, Geforce 1060, 8th Gen Intel

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 08:34 PM PDT

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is of medium importance, thinness is of low importance.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Ideally none so I can just add my own.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" with small bezels or 14" with "normal" bezels.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • 1080p is all I want, I loath 4k laptop displays.

    • I would prefer the display to be 100hz or more.

    • Gsync would be nice.

    • A touchscreen would be nice

    • Mostly metal build would be nice.

    • Thunderbolt would be very nice.

    • A 85+wh battery would be nice.

I marginally prefer a 2 in 1 form factor but imagine that is entirely unrealistic at this price. Good battery life is important.

I want it to have a 8th gen intel cpu the Core i7-8750H would be best. And a nvidia 1060.

I would be upgrading from a dell XPS 2017 model. It has a 4k touch screen, 1tb ssd, 1050, 32gb ram and a 7700k cpu.

I barely care about storage space, my main issues with my current laptop are bad battery life (5-6 hours in word documents) and the GPU is too slow.

Been through a couple laptops now, is ghosting always an issue?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 02:25 AM PDT

I recently bought a HP OMEN X 17-ap020nr. The laptop runs games pretty amazingly, great fps. I've always been a PC gamer, I have a Benq 120hz monitor atm and everything is fluid as can be. I bought a Powerspec 1510 (an amazing 60hz microcenter brand laptop w/ g-sync) and had to return it because of battery issues, but one thing I noticed was ghosting, something I'm not used to. After returning that, I bought the Omen X because it fit all the specs I was looking for. This laptop kills FPS expectations and I figured the 120hz refresh rate would be similar to my desktop. I notice ALOT of ghosting, almost to the point that it's hard to focus when turning in games like pubg/fortnite. (only games I've really tested out).

Just wondering is this something that I just have to deal with? or is there something like Nvidia motion blur that I can install on my laptop to decrease the motion blur?

    Thanks in advance!

Upgrading SSD in MSI GL73 New Gen 8750H laptop

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 01:49 AM PDT

Excuse the novice question. I bought a 275GB SSD with the intention of upgrading my current laptop below. It's painfully slow during certain tasks and using photoshop is unbearable. Heard some good things about this new 8th Gen so I'm looking at buying the laptop below (MSI GL73 16GB RAM + 128GB M.2 SSD + 1TB HDD) and just upgrading the SSD from 128GB to the 275GB I have. Is this as simple of swapping out or will I need to reinstall or clone onto new SSD and is my SSD comatible? Hoping once I move my files over I can use the 128GB SSD for my old laptop as a backup.

Looking for a new machine @$1000. Coding, light gaming.

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 01:18 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: USA. $1000, though I don't mind going a bit higher for a decent bump in performance/usability.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good specs>battery. 2 in 1 not desired.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very.

Which OS do you require? Windows.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Above 14.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light gaming. Coding. Getting into training ML models via GPU.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nothing higher than the perf. of a 1060M is required. I mostly want to play 2-3 year old games at mod/low quality and decent fps.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard (lots of coding and writing.) Build quality is important (as in decent repair-ability). At least 3 USB ports. Ideally USB C, but that's not a dealbreaker.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been hanging on to my really old laptop for ages, since the ones I get form office usually suffice. So, if there's something cool coming up in the next few months (intel 8th gen with integrated AMD iGPUs, or new graphics card line) I don't mind defering the purchase till then.

Worldwide warranty (esp. India/Australia/maybe South-East Asia) would be awesome - thought I doubt anybody provides that.

Budget $1200 CAD for Music Production.

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 12:31 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Canada. Hoping to stay under $1200 CAD but I'm willing to make exceptions if it's really worth it.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I mean good battery life would be super nice since I plan on bringing it places with me, but probably wouldn't be hard to find a outlet to charge. Best specs for the money would ideally be like 250gb of SSD with maybe another 500gb of HDD with a high end processor but that's probably too expensive for my budget so feel free to cut corners, I feel like as long as I have 500gb HDD its probably more important to get a strong CPU.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important but would be a nice plus.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. FL Studios 12

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? All I need is a sturdy and solid case with a responsive track pad and keyboard that doesn't require me to slam my damn fingers on the buttons for it to register lmfao

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I guess a couple USB ports would be nice too but I can get a splitter

Under 2k but preferably under 1k, USA

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 12:08 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Under 2k but preferably under 1k, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would love a good battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important-- I walk and bike everywhere with my laptop in my backpack.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'm fairly flexible on this; the current systems I use are a Windows 7 and a Mac (2010). While I'm most comfortable with these, I'm also willing to try new systems.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 or smaller

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I currently use AutoCAD, but not on a daily basis. As an engineering student, I may need to download other programs later. Additionally, I code for fun and would like to use android app studio as well as eclipse. (I don't expect to use android app studio without a charger on hand.)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I love a good touchpad and a comfortable keyboard. I also would like at least 2 USB ports and a headphone jack. A slot for SD cards would be a nice bonus.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The devices I currently use are the macbook pro 13 (2010) for casual tasks and an hp elitebook 8440p for coding/programming. I would love a laptop that looks nice (unlike the elitebook) and doesn't overheat immediately (unlike the macbook). Low sound emissions would be a definite plus. I don't expect any laptop to meet all of my criteria, I just thought the more detail the better. I appreciate any and all help!

13 vs 14 inch for recreational coding

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 11:55 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1200 euro, EU

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Not sure. Znebook Flip 14 has all of that, but sadly seems to be out of stock completely in EU, at least the specification within my budget.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Mildly

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 Home is enough

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I would prefer 13" if it was not a huge hindrance when trying to dabble in Javascript coding.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Only Civ6. I want to game at FHD, with at least medum settings, with not a lot of frame drops. So I guess like 30FPS average would be fine in late game strategic view.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I am not a fast typer, so kb is moot. I would like the laptop to structurally be sound after 4-5 years, so build quality should be good. I would prefer touch screen. Fingerprint would be awesome, but optional.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Currently, my main computer is an Asus T100, extremely underpowered and small. I also have a far more powerful desktop, but I have never managed to make myself sit at a desk and use it. I am a laptop user through and through. So anything i get will be a huge improvement.

I want to start learning javasctript in my spare time. Recreationally, but if I am any good at it, i would possibly like to make a carrer out of it in 1-2 years. So I would need a laptop for that.

Since I also want to be able to play Civ6, I have put MX150 as a must. Looking at all of the available options, 2 Asus laptops see to tick most boxes.

Asus Zenbook Flip 14 UX461UN - i5+8GB+256GB+MX150 - has 14" screen, which I think would be better for multitasking in splitscreen? Same amount of content as a FHD 13", but maybe it would be more legible? - is a convertible, which I far prefer when watching movies, which I also do. - has touchscreen, which i prefer, but is not crucial - has pen support, which sounds cool, but not sure if it would be much useful to me. Maybe to quickly draw some diagrams, or UIs like, layout for some webpages or apps? How useful would that be when coding in Javasript, or in wordpress, or with PWAs?

Asus Zenbook 13 UX331UN - i5+8GB+256GB+MX150 - is 13", which could be too small for heavier multitasking? - no touchscreen on the model sold in EU (go figure, in USA they have this!), which is a minus

Zenbook Flip 14 is slightly more expensive, but the problem is that they sent like 10 of them to EU, and the most sensible configuration, which i gave scepct for, is sold out everywhere. There is a slight possiblity to get the more high end configuration (i7+16+512) imported form USA for same price as the EU lower spced configuration, but I only get 1y of warranty with that. Not sure I really want to do that.

So basically my questions are: - would 14" screen be noticeable better when coding then 13" when both are FHD? - are there any other alternatives? I don't like Acer Swift 3, as it is bigger, thicker and of lesser build quality. Yoga 730 looks great, but 2 gens ago they killed 14"+dGPU version. Yoga 730-13 does not have dGPU, Yoga 730-15 is obviously much bigger.

$1-2,000 portable laptop with some graphical oomph

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 07:57 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

$1,000 - ~$2,000 (would prefer somewhere in between, but can hit the upper level if the machine is worthy)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Portability, battery life, 2-in-1 formfactor would be nice.; as a reference, I have a gaming desktop with a GTX 1080, so I don't need to be able to run [high end] games on the go, however if I could have something above Intel HD graphics, that would be nice. I also do not need a 4K display (Windows scaling sucks, and it hurts battery/performance). I recently bought the latest 8th generation HP Spectre X360 13T with Core i7-8550U, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD. However, after 2 replacements I am returning it. There have been numerous hardware issues, and by design, the fans spin up for even the most basic tasks on top of all those other issues. However, I loved that I could just flip it over and start drawing on it, as I'm trying to get into digital art/design. I'm looking for something I can toss into my backpack for the day/use for media consumption on the go/and basically just replace my desktop for basic day-to-day tasks. But I would love extra oomph/additional power, just in case (for example if I'm on vacation and want to edit photos/videos on the go; I own a GoPro Hero 5 Session and DJI Spark drone).

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'm coming from a Toshiba Kirabook; I don't remember what 4 lbs feels like, but I'd say 3 lbs would be a good place to hover around. I don't need paper-thin, but thin would be nice if heat management and capabilities (specs) are well managed/balanced.

    • Which OS do you require?

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size?

13-15 inch, but it depends on the overall size of the laptop (e.g. 15 inch screen in 14 inch body is fine)

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I may do some light photo/video editing. Other than that, the usual: Spotify, Firefox/Chrome, and some lighter Steam titles/older games. Gaming ability would be a "nice to have", but I'm not specifically looking to game first and foremost.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    See above.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Fingerprint reader (IR for Windows Hello would be a nice addition), good keyboard, good touchpad, reliable/solid build quality, and good input -- USB-C for charging would be nice, and at least one USB-A port is pretty much a necessity (we can play around with this). Touchscreen would be fantastic, especially with pen input, and I would love at least a microSD card reader.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have a gaming desktop that I built with a Ryzen 5 1600X and GTX 1080, so again, I am not looking for a dedicated gaming laptop. However, graphical prowess in general would be nice for occasional gaming and photo/video editing. 2-in-1 form factor would also be great. As I said, I have/had an HP Spectre X360 which I bought a couch machine/throw in my bag and take out for the day/digital art/media consumption device.

    • Laptops I've considered:

    • HP Spectre X360 13T - Core i7-8550U, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD (owned, returning as there have been too many issues even on my replacement)

    • Lenovo Yoga 920 - with similar specs as above, however it costs way more (I paid about $1,500 for the Spectre). Only thing besides the pricing that I don't like is the lack of card reader compared to the Spectre (not a dealbreaker, but kinda shitty). With my experience with the i7-8550U, I'm considering the i5-8520U for better heat management and matter life; the Yoga 920 is probably the closest competitor/most direct comparison

    • Dell XPS 13 9360/9370 - 9360 only comes with i5-8250U and 8GB RAM, 9370 is absurdly expensive for what it is and has no USB-A ports anymore. Touchscreen isn't standard.

    • Dell XPS 15 9570 (unreleased) -- Not sure how portable it is, the last 15" laptop I owned was a bulky Toshiba from 2010 that was very heavy in my backpack, however it's supposed to come with a GTX 1050 iirc

    • Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 -- Similar to the above about weight, reviews are saying battery life is crap (~5 hours), keyboard is Macbook Pro-like (similar to butterfly switches). I touchtype heavily.

    • Gigabyte Aero 14/15 -- I don't need a GTX 1070 on the go, so I don't need the 15X model. Again, I don't know/remember what 4.4 lbs feels like, but I know that it's light and portable for what it is. But, no touchscreen and bulkier than most others on this list. Forget it; this was purely on the list because of cost compared to an ultrabook

Ramble -- I'm genuinely sad at HP; the Spectre X360 13 is beautiful and should perform well, but it has build quality issues and the fans ramp up for the simplest tasks. Apparently these are really common issues and are enough for me to return it.

Looking For Max Specs in a Low Price

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 07:39 PM PDT

Laptop for QA Automation and testing. Country: USA Budget: $1-2000.

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 10:46 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000-2000 USD, USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I think I dont prefer the 2 in 1 form factor. but if the machine is powerful and fast enough for my uses the form factor is not a big deal
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness do not matter at all to me.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows is required for all of my work applications.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" is my minimum, bigger is nice too.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Main use will be programming. HP UFT, Selenium, Telerik test studio and other test tools. Will need to use VMs fairly normally as well.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I will probably not game much on this as I have a machine for that purpose
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality is preferred, SSD/NVMe if possible.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am finding that my current company laptop(surface pro) is much to slow for using most testing tools(many 5second delays in actions.. guh) so I am looking for something speedy where I am the bottleneck in working and not my machine.

Thank you all for the help.

Needing a fast, reliable new laptop for the future.

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 10:44 PM PDT

Hello all. I'm not immediately looking for a laptop, but some general brands or fancy schmantz words/key phrases to look for would be super handy.

Total budget and country of purchase: Australia - anywhere between $500 and $1500

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is brilliant, and I need something that doesn't slump when I have several applications open at once. My current laptop takes up to 10 minutes to start up, and so something super speedy would be fantastic.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? The thinner and lighter the better, though it's not essential.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows is preferable, but I am content with Mac OS.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Nothing tiny, otherwise N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Typically not, but the ability to run Adobe Photoshop and Premier Pro without my phone dying would be nice if needed.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'm a writer, so a good quality keyboard is useful. Any extra requirements are welcome but not necessary.

Thank you all for your help!

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life shouldn't be bad, yes i want best specifications for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15-18 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No editing, lots of gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? overwatch, fortnite, far cry 5, sea of theives, constant 144fps at mid to high settings

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard, good build, touch screen

$1500 laptop for gaming and school.

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 09:44 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

$1500 but I can go a little bit over.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Battery life and good value are important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Under 6 pounds and thinner than 1 inch

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Anything is fine I can install my own copy of windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15 inch

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Fusion 360, Blender, Reaper, and some AAA games

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I think something like a GTX 1060 is the performance level I'm looking for

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

It needs to have a high refresh rate screen, or be cheap enough that I can afford a decent 144hz 1080p monitor ($200) within the budget

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The new Asus Zephyrus or the Sager NP8851 look pretty good but I'm concerned about the battery length of the NP8851.

Around $1000-1250 or more, gaming/school laptop, 25-17 inches

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 09:42 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000-1250 or more - USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs. Going to be gaming and doing school work. I don't play with max settings either so I just want good performance.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Both are kinda important but it's okay if it's reasonable.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows for sure.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I guess 15 inches..? Not sure if 17 is too big.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming for sure. Rocket League. Overwatch. Runescape. CSGO. Steam games. Fortnite. Pubg.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Normally play on low or medium since I care about FPS and what not and I don't care about graphics.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard, blacklit. Good memory. Decent battery life for my studying. I really would want a 120Hz screen... Not 60.. If that's possible.

    [$1000] Engineering School Laptop

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 01:56 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$1000, Arizona, United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best Specs > Battery Life, 2 in 1 isn't important because I have an iPad I use.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Fairly. I currently have a Thinkpad E560 that I lug to school with me, and it makes my bag considerably heavier.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. No Mac.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15" is ideal

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. SOLIDWORKS, MATLAB, Fortran code for Computational Fluids, Civ 5 (rarely), Minecraft (rarely). As long as I can play the games comfortably (~40 fps or so), then I don't really care. I care more about overall performance and computational ability.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mentioned above, but to reiterate: Minecraft, Civ 5, average settings and FPS.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I love the fingerprint reader, but could do without it. I want a 1080p screen at minimum, an i7, 8-16 gb ram, an SSD, backlit keyboard, reliability is very important to me, as is the touchpad. Two video output (HDMI, Displayport, whatever it may be) would be ideal.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So, I'm debating between building a PC and buying a new laptop. I'd like to have a high-performance machine overall, but portability is important to me because of the amount of work I do away from home.

From my own searching, I've found two main contenders that I've heard good things about and seem to have most of the features I want. The first is the ASUS Zenbook, and the Levovo Yoga XXX models. Finally, one last laptop that I've been seeing more and more is the HP Spectre.

Any suggestions on which is best or suggestions for other models are greatly appreciated! I usually get a bit freaked out buying something so pricey, but I want something that I know will last me at least through the end of my undergrad.

    Surface Book or Macbook Pro?

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 09:03 PM PDT

I had a bad experience with my last surface but the new one is so pretty and looks a lot better...

Anyway, I'm going into college next year and need one. I'm doing a STEM major, and other than classwork i write a lot (like a lot), play low end games (think civ v, cities skylines, minecraft) and produce music. I want a good battery life, as well. Also, I have an iPhone.

So yea. Which is better? I'm not getting touch bar if I get MacBook but it'll still be a couple hundred more than the surface book. If you have any other suggestions please share but I've been in some best buys and these are my 2 favorite.

Looking for help in deciding which laptop to buy for content creation

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 08:59 PM PDT

Hi. I wan't to use a laptop for content creation such as music production, video editing, and digital art. I would like to get a laptop that would work very well for what I plan to do with it. So I've been looking at two the two razer blade 17" laptops, FHD and 4k. (https://www.razer.com/Gaming-System/Blade-Pro-F2-Base/p/RZ09-01663E53-R3U1) I wan't to know if these would be good for what I am looking for or if there is anything better. One reason I've been looking at these is because Razer is giving out FL studio for free. But I would also like a good display with well represented colours.
