Solidly-built laptop with a nice keyboard and screen, specs irrelevant?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2018 04:11 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    US$800-1000, USA or Australia.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Battery life is a higher priority. The only spec I'd care about is having an SSD.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not very.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Linux + Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Medium to large.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    No, nothing intensive.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

In order of importance: keyboard > screen > build quality > battery > specs > accessories like touch, fingerprints and disc drives.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm looking for something to use for programming work while travelling. As such, I don't need to run any games, won't be running any intensive programs, don't need a ton of storage space, and don't need touchscreens or fancy accessories. I just need something that feels solid and reliable with a nice keyboard to type on, and if possible, a nice screen to look at. I'd rather have a thick workhorse with a battery that runs all day than a slick slim little thing that puffs out quickly, if that's a decision to make.

    Looking for a good gaming/coding laptop $700-$1100!

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 06:07 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    US, anywhere from $700-$1100

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good battery life + good specs to run games and code

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not that important to me. Of course I rather not have a 15lb rock for a laptop.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14'-16', but not very important

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming. Programs for coding and some games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Medium settings on CS:GO at 120fps+ at all times.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Nothing very specific, but I wouldn't want the laptop to be flimsy.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Was considering this laptop. or any of the G Series laptops from Dell. Are these any good?

Edit: Thanks for the responses! Just to let you know, I can get a laptop outside of dell lol

    CANADA/USA - 13"-14" 1200 USD

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 09:42 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I can purchase through the states but would prefer Canada. $1200usd

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I want a portable laptop that is light and thin. 2 in 1 would be fine.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? This is very important, has to be lightweight

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows/Mac

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -fill here, remove dashes-

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photo editing. Browsing internet, watching videos.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Prefer better quality. Coming from a macbook air 2011.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am really liking the xps 13 but find its on the higher end. I will not do anything unless it has an i5 and a ssd. I am on this thing 4+ hours a day so the better the quality the better. The longer lasting the battery the better :).

    ~$800 13-15" laptop that looks normal- Croatia(EU)

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 01:42 PM PDT

    • **Total budget and country of purchase

$800, up to 1000 if it's exactly what I'm looking for , Croatia or anywhere in the EU

    • **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?

Best specs for the money>> good battery, I don't want 2 in 1 form

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not at all, as long as it doesn't look like a gaming laptop

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

I don't care and I wouldn't mind linux if it was cheaper

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15 inches is ideal, nothing less than 13, 1080p would be nice.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Some photoshop, some programming, mostly browsing or office, I mostly play older games and indie games, emulators

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I play older games, strategy games , or newer indie games, nothing too demanding. I very rarely play AAA games or modded games. If it can run AAA games on minimum 30fps that's nice, just in case something good comes out. * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Build quality is always appreciated , I just want a laptop that I wouldn't be embarassed to take out into the public eg. nothing with RGB lights, ugly edgy logos or jet exhausts on the back.

I'd like it if I could replace the hard drive with an SSD if it doesn't come with one.

Looking at a few Costco laptops, open to other suggestions.

    Posted: 17 Apr 2018 12:49 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000-$1300, United States. There's some wiggle room with budget, though I'd like to try and stay within it.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would prefer the best specifications for the money, though a decent battery life wouldn't hurt either.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very, though being able to bring it along when I travel would be nice.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" or 17.3" would be fine.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly gaming. My tastes jump around a bit in terms of genres, but games like Cities: Skylines, Kerbal Space Program, Subnautica, Rimworld, EU IV, Civ 5/6, etc.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above. I would prefer being able to run the higher settings and FPS.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I like having decent build quality, and a decent touchpad wouldn't hurt. I'm also a fan of good keyboards. I do have a mouse I use for gaming, so a really good touchpad is not a requirement.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'd like this particular laptop to last me for a while. My current Dell laptop is roughly five or six years old, and still running pretty well. I've got my eye on a couple of laptops at Costco and wouldn't mind getting your opinions on them.

Dell Inspiron 15 7000 - Full HD Screen

    Dell Inspiron 15 7000 - 4K Screen

    Helios 300 17.3"

I'm really just looking for some guidance as to which one would be potentially better than the others. Of course, if there's another laptop available that meets what I'm looking for, I'm happy to check it out!

    Thanks!

Laptop under $1000 CAD for school, business and a bit of time wasting

    Posted: 17 Apr 2018 12:14 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 Canadian. Would prefer not to order in from the US.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is important to me, looking to be able to go roughly a work day without charging, or with only a brief charge over a lunch break. Don't care for 2-in-1s or touchscreens or anything like that. Prefer a metal body for durability.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Portability is nice but build quality is more important to me, just needs to be under 15".

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"-14". 12" is too small and 15" is too big.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I do a little bit of photo and video editing using photoshop and premiere. I have a desktop for the heavy stuff, but it would be nice to be able to whip stuff up on the laptop if I'm away from home for example. I hope to be able to play the occasional game of Civ on the go and maybe some indie games or older titles, plus I'm the kind of person who always has at least 10 tabs open in chrome and it can easily reach 30 when I'm working on a project.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above. Main games would be Civ 5 and 6, basically just needs to be able to run at at least 30 FPS without graphics being too cruddy.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Gotta have a full HD screen, backlit keyboard and windows precision trackpad. Would be open to ignoring them only if you have a really good deal for me.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. To sum it up, laptop with a good build and good screen that would be a notch better than your basic work laptop so I can run a few games. Not super concerned about storage because I have a bunch of external hard drives kicking around for movies and such but I want to be able to have a few games and a season or two of a show in full HD on the laptop's internal drive.

CS Undergraduate Programming Laptop - Recommendations Please

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 02:36 PM PDT

    Hi guys

I'm going to uni soon (UK) to study Computer Science, and would like some recommendations for a programming laptop. The laptop is almost solely for work purposes i.e. writing notes and programming. I'd like to prioritise battery life, display brightness and portability over any other features.

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Anywhere up to £1300 (roughly $1800); going to uni in the UK. However I'd really like it to be as cheap as possible, so I can save as much money where I can. I'd like to hear justifications for higher-priced laptops.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good battery life is definitely essential.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Portability is very important, as I'll likely be carrying it around in a backpack regularly. Thinness is not too important, though it would be a nice extra, but absolutely not necessary.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux or Mac. Apparently these two are the best picks for development. I'd also appreciate any specific Linux distro recommendations that are good for development and/or battery life.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No gaming, but will probably use it to occasionally watch YouTube or stream films.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Would appreciate a nice build quality - something that will last a good 3-4 years of regular use while I'm at uni. Something that I can type notes up on and program on for a few hours at a time.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The Thinkpad T470 is very appealing to me, however I'm not sure whether the almost £1100 price is justifiable, especially since a MacBook Pro is only £100-200 more expensive, with more features and a better quality display. The X270 is also appealing but once again it's price is a little daunting. The advantages of the Thinkpad variations over the MBP for me is that their hardware can be upgraded later on.

With that being said, I wouldn't say I need any of the above laptops. If you could recommend anything cheaper that would satisfy the requirements, I'd love to hear it. Even absolutely budget-priced laptops I'd be willing to consider - the cheaper the better - as long as you think they're the best value for money for me. Thanks for the help!

    4K+ Editing Laptop - $4000

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 10:45 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $3200-4200 (might be undershooting that), USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money. Can't have horrible battery life, but performance is the priority.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 Pro

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15"-17". Must have 4K display (IMPORTANT). The quality and color accuracy of the display is a priority.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Video and photo editing. I will be editing 4K and higher resolution video (raw and prores HQ) and raw photography on DaVinci Resolve and in Adobe programs (Premiere, Photoshop, Lightroom). I'll also will be using it as a mobile blu-ray player (blu-ray player/writer will be external; I have international blu-rays, so I'll be using anyDVD or a program like that). I will also be using it for video compression in various programs.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A nice, comfortable keyboard and touchpad is preferred. I'd rather it not be a flashy gaming keyboard, and I would rather not have a touch-screen.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. There are two reasons why I need a little advice on where I should get my laptop.

    • I was planning to buy a laptop through Puget Systems where I bought my desktop, but they stopped selling laptops. I am trying to find a company that will "custom" create the laptop I need (unless close to what I need is out there already). Everyone online suggests gaming laptop companies, but they seem a little overpriced, and I don't need/want any of the gaudy visual elements of the chassis or the crazy light-up keyboards. I would rather have a plain computer. What reliable company (gaming-focused or otherwise) could build me this computer?

    • I am confused about Intel's new processors. Is their new hexa-core processor one of the first mobile processors with six cores? Which of their laptop processors is the best right now? Is it the Intel Core i9-8950HK, and is it available in custom laptops right now? I can wait to purchase my computer for three or four months. Also, should I overclock?

Overall, I was thinking of getting a laptop with the aforementioned processor, 32gb-64gb (is 64 possible with this processor?) of memory, GeForce 1080 or a pair in SLI (not sure about this), and Samsung 960 pro 1tb (or should I get 512gb and rely on external drives?). What speed memory should I get?

Edit: I know that what I've described might not be possible in my price range, but I just want to know what is possible for the laptop and decide later what I can do without to fit within my budget.

    Buying a gaming laptop

Need a budget computer for basic tasks, alread(US/$150-$350)

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 10:03 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Purchasing in the US and looking at a budget of $150-$350

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer a 2 in 1 or detachable factor laptop. However, I am open minded to a regular clamshell design. In addition, the best specs for the money would more than likely be the deciding factor and I am definitely finicky about a good screen.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, I would like something about 2.5lbs or less

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 Home or Pro

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 10-11, maybe 12 at most.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Adobe Acrobat, Remote Desktop, in addition, would need to run java or direct x in internet explorer.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Overall build quality matters most, followed by touch screen and lastly stylus. In addition, at least 4gb of ram and 64gb of storage.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I currently have no real need for a computer as an iPad and an iPhone handle 95% of what I do. However, what I am looking for is something that is light and portable and can support plugging in a USB smart card reader to access government websites and to address the compatibility issues.

Currently, I have found 2 laptops that are of interest. However, I would like to see if there are other options that I may have overlooked.

HP Spectre or Something else for CS/Finance Student?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 05:52 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA. No set budget, but would prefer it to be around 1500.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't really care about 2 in 1. Would like good performance (don't need gaming though). Would like decent battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness Medium importance. Will be using for college so it will be carried around.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Will be doing a Finance/CS dual degree program. I've heard a lot of CS students recommend OSX because of native Unix, but am turned off by price (though I'd have no problem spending the extra if it's the overwhelming consensus).

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I like the portability of 13 inch laptops, but 15 inch seems more usable. My dad has a 14",, and that seems perfect, but hard to find

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light gaming would be nice but it's not at all a focal point.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? LOL

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Looking for a 4K screen.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am really posting so see if y'all think there's any real competition to the HP Spectre X360 out there. It currently seems unbeatable coming in sub 1500 with a 4K screen, 8th gen i7, and dedicated GPU.

    HIGH SCHOOL VR LAPTOP

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 01:51 PM PDT

Hey r/SuggestALaptop, I'm a rising senior in highschool and I'm looking to develop a virtual reality app for my senior thesis. My teacher helping with my project wants to apply for a grant to get the hardware we need for an oculus headset and a laptop that would run my simple virtual reality therapy app and other, simpler programs that he would use for his classes after I'm done. I'd like to keep it cheap since schools are kind of stingy with money, so do you guys have any suggestions on cheap, VR capable laptops? Thanks in advance :)

USA, Looking for a portable gaming laptop for College

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 09:07 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: United States, $1700-$2200

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery Life and Specs are the most important to me.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would really like something that is relatively thin and sleek, and doesn't look super gamer-y,

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~15 Inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD and Gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Rocket League, Starcraft, Battlefield 4, R6S, Skyrim SE Modded, Far Cry 5,

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Coming from a mechanical keyboard, that is really important to me. I have a mouse so that isn't all that big but I wouldn't mind a good trackpad. Build Quality is important as well.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I will be trying to use this for up to 4-5 years, so having a powerful system that can last will be worth it if I need to spend more.

I wanted a 2 in 1 for coding, and essay creation as a high school student, but plan on keeping it through the first few years of university.

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 05:18 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Canada, about $1000 Canadian

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Yes, I want a 2 in 1. Good battery life would be a plus, but I'd take the best specifications.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? thinness is not very important. As long as I can hold it in my hands for an hour or so, it is fine.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Well out of the box, Windows, since most laptops don't ship with Linux, but I will definitely dual boot windows 10 with Linux mint as fast as possible.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. My preferred screen size is around 10 to 13 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be mostly using it for coding.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? touch screen for sure. Other than that I'm flexible on the others.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Regarding a 2 in 1, I rather have something where the keyboard detaches.

Freelancer looking for portability, good keyboard, and heavy multi-tasking, $1750-$2500USD, Canada

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 05:18 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Canada / $1750-$2500 USD (Purchasable with Bitcoin/cryptocurrency is a huge bonus for me)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I am looking for a light-weight/slim laptop with gaming-level specifications. Battery life is trivial for me, I would like something quiet and portable.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important, I want it to be around 5 lbs or lighter, thinness is important too, but it would be nice to have something with room to rest my hands on, although not essential.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. OS is trivial, I will be using Linux and probably Windows dual boot.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I would prefer ~14"/15" but I am open to 17"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not much gaming, but would like to have the option. Would definitely be doing some video+photo editing, music production in a DAW like FL Studio. Ideally I would like ability for high capacity multi-tasking, i.e. afk/idle in a game+edit a document, have 1-3 browsers with 10-20 tabs open, host a small server, monitor a trading exchange, talk in a few chat platforms, listen to music, and do photo editing all at once without losing much performance.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mostly I would just be playing Oldschool Runescape every now and then, which is not at all demanding for GPU (3rd party clients more demanding on CPU if anything). I would like to be able to play games like Dota 2 or Terraria every now and then on high detail (not ultra) and essentially just want to have a machine that is capable to handle new titles if I wanted to try/play them for a week or so, if possible, future proofed for maybe 2-3 years+

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A very responsive keyboard that is close to mechanical as I can get is a huge bonus for me, I do a lot of typing. Touch screen is trivial, finger print reader is cool but also trivial, touchpad irrelevant.

    My ideal specs: 32GB Ram, 512GB - 1TB Samsung 960 PRO NVMe SSD, Nvidia 1070 GTX, i7-8750H

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. In summation, I am looking for something light and slim for demanding multitasking stuff. I want it to be semi-future proofed so am willing to pay a bit high for a medium term investment. Ideally I can purchase this laptop with BTC/etc. Second most important feature besides performance+portability for me is the keyboard. My perfect price is around $2000-$2200 USD. I prefer no branding but don't care if the deal is right!

For a general idea, I am looking at models such as Gigabyte Aero 15x and MSI GS65. If there is an unbranded frankenstein design in between those two, it would be perfect for what I'm wanting.

I am definitely open to criticism/reality check on price if my budget is unrealistic. Thanks a lot guys!

(US) Laptop for College (15.6" or larger screen and under $500)

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 08:07 PM PDT

I am looking for an affordable laptop for my sister who will be going to college in the fall. She would most likely use it for Netflix, Spotify, Microsoft Office and the occasional light gaming, but nothing intensive. Looking for something that isn't slow and that will last her a while.

Need a Laptop For Grad School That is Good for School Work and Gaming

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 08:47 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: US / $800-$1700USD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would like a thin gaming laptop that can get decent - great battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Thinness is decently important. I don't want to be lugging around a huge laptop to and from class.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows - I can get it free from my school

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I would prefer 14"/15" screen but if it's a good deal with a 17" screen I would be open to the possibility.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Medium gaming. Nothing too crazy. Some video/photo editing. Games like Overwatch or Witcher 3 at higher settings.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Overwatch, Fortnite, AAA games from Steam like Witcher 3. I would like a high FPS. If I can get a good deal on a 144hz screen that would be ideal but if you don't believe it's necessary I'm open to that as well.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good input devices would be nice for lots of typing. Possible 120/144hz screen? GTX 1060 or higher.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Essentially what I think would be best is a thin and lighter gaming laptop with a good graphics card and a possible 120/144hz screen with solid battery life since I will be out a lot.

Need a decent daily use laptop 13"-15"/US/Under $1500

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 08:00 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$1500 and USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is arguably my biggest want, reasonable specs are important as well. I would prefer it NOT to be a 2-1.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important, but a hefty laptop is fine as long as it's thinner (I like metal bodied laptops)

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Only owned windows, but I'll consider a mac.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"-15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. If I use CAD, I'll be running microstation, but extremely light usage. I have a work laptop for heavy duty use. For the most I'll be running pretty basic office programs and some development environments for light hobby level coding/data analysis.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard with a number pad is very important (a poor trackpad is a dealbreaker), great build quality, minimal bloatware (I can dream right?), SSD.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So I've never actually owned a laptop that wasn't a ridiculous overbuild that had a reasonable battery life. I used to game in high school and used gaming laptops to get through engineering school and just continued with it after I graduated. I have no need for this anymore as I have a work laptop that I use for all this now. I'm still stuck in this mindset that without an i7-HQ, dedicated GPU and 16gb of ram I'll be stuck with a slow POS that will become unusable after 2yrs. In reality I know that an i5 is probably fine, I have no need for a dedicated GPU and 8gb is more than enough to run office. I basically need reassurance that I could use a lower spec'd laptop and be fine.

    Laptop Suggestions?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 07:48 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Budget is around 900 and currently reside in the US *

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would prefer the best specifications and 2 in 1 would be second. *

How important is weight and thinness to you? It isn't too important, as long as it's not janky. *

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 OS would do me happy *

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Anything at or above 14" would be great. *

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I do intermediate editing along with photo editing. Gaming is also something I occasionally do as well. *

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? My Steam library does not have hardest games to run but I am looking for at least a constant 30 FPS at 720p resolution if I was playing Fortnite for example. *

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good, backlit keyboard is a must along with good build quality. I would at least want an intel based laptop, not AMD as they're more susceptible to heating as I learned my lesson for the last laptop I had, even with a cooling pad. *

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Lastly, a quad core would be encouraged but not necessary for handling digital editing along with gaming. The processors should also be recent to accommodate the speed I need for the tasks I need it for.

    Thank You!

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15 is fine.

      • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be photo and video editing(1080p), but light editing tho. I use Photoshop, lightroom, and Premiere pro
      • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Occasionally league of legend, low to mid setting at 30fps is ok.

Going to college! Long-lasting, reliable laptop as desktop replacement & for some gaming? 14-16 in. screen, $2500-3000, USA

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 07:14 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $2500-3000, USA. Not looking for cheaper options, this laptop should last a long time and $3000 is my set-aside budget.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No 2-in-1 form factor. Should have the best specs for the money, but last a good 7-8 hours with the right settings and moderate use.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat important. I want something that looks sleek, at least. Not tryna pull out a 20-pound light-up epic gamer laptop in class and drown out the prof with my extreme gamer cooling fan. Minimalistic design is better for me.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, but I don't mind Mac at all - it's a good OS and I've bootcamped desktop Macs in the past. I could also use an external drive for the bootcamp OS, I'm planning on putting all my games on an external drive anyway so partitioning isn't a problem.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. At least 14 inches, but 17 might be too much for battery life.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Heavy multitasking and some gaming. Should be able to run new-ish games without a problem. I'm majoring in economics and minoring in music performance, if that matters (viola best instrument!).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I usually play Civ 5, PUBG, League, and Total War games. I don't need a laptop that runs Crysis at 120 FPS, but it should hold up to years of moderate gaming, including some newer multiplayer FPS games - PUBG comes to mind.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality is definitely important to me, as is a clear, vibrant display. As a side note, the new MacBook's touchbar would be a big plus for me.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm leaning towards a top-end MacBook Pro, but before the Windows master race hate, hear me out. It can be bootcamped to run Windows too, I love the touch bar, and they definitely seem to stay fast for a long time - much longer than most Windows desktops I've had. My concern is the graphics card. Open to other suggestions tho, that's why I'm here. The Razer Blade Pro seems like a great gaming alternative, but I've heard varying things about the reliability and internal build quality.

EDIT: I didn't put anything about touch screens in my original post. I'm not interested in a touch screen, and I don't think I'd ever use one.
