Is there any manufacturer that offers in-home repairs like Dell/Alienware does?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 08:12 PM PDT

So I was shopping around and thinking about getting a new PC. The thing is that I'm disabled, and largely bedbound for like 23 hours out of the day, so I use my laptop a lot. I really dislike the idea of having to ship my laptop somewhere if it needs warranty service, and then waiting a week for them to repair it, etc..

I've loved the in home warranty service from alienware.. the warranty is expensive but they come quick with the parts and install it in your home.

Is there ANY computer company (besides dell) that has this kind of warranty service?

    How much difference is there between a 1050ti 4gb and a 1060 6gb?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 03:38 AM PDT

I am thinking about getting a acer predator helios 300, but I don't know if the more expensive model with the 1060 is worth it. As far as I know, this is the only difference between the two models I am looking at.

Decision time *What to choose from these*

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 03:25 AM PDT

    Greetings,

After some advice on here and from some general research I have narrowed my list down significantly.

    I'm now left with

    • MSI GSD65
    • Asus Zeyphrus 501 M
    • Gigabyte Aero 15X V8
    • Alienware 15R3

All options feature the 8th gen Intel cpu.

I am stuck at bit of a fork in the road now as i'm conflicted on where I should make my sacrifice.

    First up.

    We have;

    • 1x 1070MQ
    • 2x 1070
    • 1x 1080

I use the laptop primarily for gaming but I have to admit i'm trying to find some balance as I would like to have good battery life but I don't know where to draw the line, I use the latop in front of the TV, and general computer tasks. I am now getting into Video editing so I need a bit of grunt no doubt.

    • The Alienware has nearly 6 hours of battery life and probably the highest performance, but it is most definitely the most expensive to the point I would say it's outside my price range in a way.

    • The Aero 15x, seems like a great laptop, very ultrabook like for downtime, 12 hours of battery life, but it has a 1070MQ, how will this fair considering i'm using a 980m at the moment?

    • The Asus Zephrus 501M 'seems' to be the sweet spot. 1070 full fat, low MS response on the panel, but 3-4 hours battery life tops as it seems it has a smaller battery and no Optimus support.

    • Finally and the one i'm leaning towards, the MSI GS65 Stealth 8RF. Only thing a bit concerning is the screen response time is 7ms. other than that, seems good I'm reading conflicting reports of Max Q or not. so some clarity here would be great.

So what would you pick, or what have you heard about this bunch>?

    Upgrades to my laptop

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 03:24 AM PDT

    Hi All,

Not sure if this is where i can post this, so please delete if not allowed.

I recently bought a new laptop for gaming. It runs like an absolute charm, but there is always room for improvements.

I was wondering if anyone knew exactly what i can upgrade on this laptop? Specs are below:

    Acer Nitro 15.6" CPU: i5 7800HQ RAM: 8GB Storage: 1TB HDD GPU: NVidia 1050

Laptop for viewing pleasure, preferably 17".

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 09:24 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Australia 1800 AUD (preferably less, can bump a little more if absolutely necessary)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Screen quality is my #1 priority. I don't want 4k, but I do want good colour. Prefer 2 in 1 with good battery life. I'd like to have an 8250u for smooth H.265 10bit decoding.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Middleish. I'd like it, but its not the end-all.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows primarily, dabble with Linux but doesn't need to be taken into account.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-17" with larger preferred, but without a particularly thick and heavy body.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photo editing but fairly casual/hobbiest. Some light gaming. Primary usage is to watch films in good quality and with battery to do so on the go.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good hinge is a must. I'd like a finger-print reader. At least one usb 3 or below port for my DAC.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The 8250u may not be necessary, but it is to my knowledge the best price/performance available at the moment that smoothly decodes high bitrate film without the need of a dGPU. That said, I'm happy to be corrected and also happy to have a laptop WITH a dGPU!

Docking station with rdp/vnc/etc built in?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 03:17 AM PDT

It never occurred to me to ask this question, and today my google-fu is weak.

I use several laptops regularly and I realize that something that would improve my life massively would be a docking station that has the ability to have a full network presence that i can rdp, vnc, whatever, into to use the mouse, keyboard, display. That way, I always can connect to one address, with one set of credentials, and use whatever is plugged into it at the time.

    Does such a thing exist?

    no screen pref. USA. $600-ish

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 02:50 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, can't afford much, probably not more than $600/700 if the laptop is great for the money.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I care most about speed and screen resolution/graphics quality.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No editing or gaming really. Lots of video viewing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? DO NOT WANT TOUCHSCREEN. Needs to be able to play dvds AND blurays. Prefer a keyboard with a separate number keypad to the side.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I will basically be using this laptop to do some work from home and watch movies. Sounds simple enough, but my current "laptop" is like trying to do these things on a stone tablet. I need reliable SPEED and to not feel like I am watching netflix through shower glass. THANKS!!!

    Just looking for some advice.

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 02:28 AM PDT

so i have a desktop here at home with a gtx 1080 and it runs like a dream. unfortunately, my build is large and need something for on the go gaming since i travel alot for work.

I bought a dell laptop with a gtx 1050ti and it runs everything reasonably. I play the un optimized goodness that is PUBG and it does not run it very well. I compare the quality to that of playing PUBG mobile.

anyways, I'm going to be returning it and paying the difference for a laptop with an AMD RX 580. Didnt know too much about AMD since I've been an Nvidia person. Done some research and it seems on par with the GTX 1060.

Just wanting some input on it from others here and seeing if that's an acceptable GPU upgrade over the 1050ti. Or should i just bite the bullet and pay even more for one with a 1060? thanks.

Up to or around $1,000 AUD Laptop - SSH/RDP/Web Browsing

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 12:58 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: * Australia, $1000.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. * No touch screen, long battery life, lightweight & preferably more RAM (CPU and Storage doesn't really fuss me)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very, I have an old thick and heavy Toshiba Satelite at home and a thin Lenovo T470S at work, the weight and size difference is day and night.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, Mac or Linux would be fine - I've used them all before for personal and work use (Had a Chromebook previously, but this laptop will be a primary device for me, so not the Chromebook)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A - probably a smaller screen as I'm after a lighter more power efficient laptop.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No Games, no photo editing, no video editing. Very very minimal coding, and it's extremely light coding anyway - all heavy lifting will be done via servers and remote desktop environments (I'm a Systems Engineer, so most of my time I'm word processing, using spreadsheets or in a browser/ssh/rdp window.)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Preferably no optical drive (Due to size), a nice keyboard would be nice. No touch-screen, I hate touch screens. :)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Feel free to ask questions, however RAM and battery life are the main ones. A nice to type keyboard is next, then a nice screen. CPU wise I'm always a bit hesitant with random named CPU models so I generally stick to the i series. I have an i7 in my current laptop, it's overkill. I'd guess i3 or i5 would be best, but am unsure how the batterylife to performance ratio of them are anymore, I haven't followed consumer electronics or laptops for a good 5+ years. Am actually heavily considering a Macbook Air or low end Mac Pro..

Mid-budget (~$1600 USD) laptop for gaming and video editing

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 05:03 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: between 1500-1700 USD, buying the computer in the US.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Good battery life would be nice, but specs are priority. Anything over 4 hours battery life (during light use) would be preferable, though.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat important - will move around a lot with the laptop, but I feel like high specs sort of hinder lightness...

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, I guess.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Between 13" and 15.6".

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Will often use it for video editing and gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Will use a lot of Premiere Pro, and it would be nice plus to run a few games with decent fps... CS:GO, Fortnite, Overwatch, XCOM 2...

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Great build quality is a must, nothing flimsy or poorly-made, please!

    Thanks for the help!

13"-17", USA, $500-$1000, Student wanting best bang for buck PC

    Posted: 16 Apr 2018 12:34 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: United States, $500-$1000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money, I'm a college student looking to get the best bang for his buck

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not super important, but nice to have

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Dear god please windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Anything under 17 inches, I want it to be able to fit into my backpack

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Wont be doing a lot of intensive stuff, I have a gaming PC so this will be for school. So Micro Word, but being able to use Photoshop would be nice

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I wont be gaming on it much, if i do it will be small easy to run games

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Decent durability would be important i guess, I'm not the softest with my backpack, even with the laptop in it

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Just because I'm willing to pay 1000 doesn't mean I want to, If you guys know of a great PC that's a steal for what it is I'd rather take that and save money

    16", +1, around $600

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 11:35 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: United States of America. Probably around $600 maximum

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 form would be interesting but not necessary. Battery life is somewhat important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't care about the weight really, but I don't want a thick or bulky laptop.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I like Windows the most. Not really an Apple fan, but I'm open to change if something sounds good.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Around 16"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I guess steam games, but I would prefer a PC if I was going for gaming. I'm not really aware of good gaming laptops so fill me in on them.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No specific games really. Not entirely educated in laptop gaming in general.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like a great keyboard. I also want a reliable build. My ASUS ran into some trouble where the screen stays black whenever a window opens up and the piece where the screen and keyboard are together broke off which exposes wires. Touch screen would be alright. I would like a touchpad that doesn't have the distinct mouse clickers if you get what I mean. Not sure how to put that. I just want one big piece for moving the mouse and clicking. Optical drive would be good but not necessary. I would like the screen to have good resolution too.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Even though I talked about my ASUS breaking down, I don't mind getting suggestions for other ASUS laptops. I really enjoyed it when it was working. I like Windows OS but would be good with receiving Apple product suggestions too.

    Laptop for Engineering Student

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 11:30 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Two budgets here to gauge what is worth spending. Sub $1,000 USD and $1,000-1500 USD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Looking for the best of both worlds here. Good battery life is a preference but I don't want to sacrifice specifications for the money. Want to best bang for the buck here.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Lightweight and thin is very preferable. Not sure how possible this is but it is very appealing.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A just not tiny.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. This will eventually be used for CAD courses my senior year. I would not expect to be doing anything crazy heavy but for the most part it will be a laptop for taking notes, running some programs such as MatLab and GINT. It will eventually be used to run solidworks or solid edge.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? NA

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Just something that is friendly to use and feels nice. I don't like bulky at all. Simple and slim is how I like it. As for a touch screen, this isn't a must but if it's in the budget, sure.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Just to recap the above. I'm an engineering student who will one day be doing some CAD programs in a year/year and a half. Sadly my laptop is dead and need to replace now with that in mind. I would expect to be doing data analysis in programs given by the company for internships or Coops. I would like something that I can use to take notes, reports, and run programs when needed. I ideally want something that is more on the slim/lightweight side without sacrificing quality for my budget. I want something that can handle the future so I won't be pulling my hair out but I don't want to lug around a massive gaming computer. A good display is nice, so the better quality I can get in this budget the better. I have broken into two budgets so I can see what each budget gets me. If you know something thats essentially a 'no brainer' to get, tell me so I'm not wasting my money on something just by saving a few hundred bucks.

Let me know if this answered all of your questions!

[Canada, up to$800, no screen size preference] photo editing (lightroom and photoshop) main priority. Any pointers?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 02:34 PM PDT

    Hi r/suggestalaptop,

I'm in the market for a new laptop, though have no idea where to start. My last laptop was made by Asus; I did like it very much. I will be using this new laptop mainly for editing photos using Lightroom and Photoshop, but am hoping to be able to do some light gaming on it (Wow, Diablo II, Elder Scrolls) and be able to run Guitar Pro also. The latter two would be a bonus, photo editing is the priority.

I've had my eye on the Asus Chromebooks; the reviews seem to be good though I'm not sure if they fit my needs. I see that Lightroom minimum requirements are 4GB, but recommended is 12GB.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: up to $800, Canada

    • **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Best for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Important - will travel with this

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, open to Chrome OS

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Lightroom and Photoshop a priority, possibly some light gaming (filthy casual)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? WoW, Diablo II, Elder Scrolls

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen

Thanks in advance for any pointers!

Professional looking Gaming/Engineering Laptop in the range of $1000-1500

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 05:17 PM PDT

    Hi all,

My laptop that i've been using for the past 4-5 years has died and I am in the search of a new laptop so I wanted to ask y'all for suggestions. The laptop will be used for engineering work and some gaming.

Total budget and country of purchase: Max USD$1,500, but possibly slightly higher if there is a really strong argument for spending more.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money, don't care about 2 in 1 form factor. Also good battery would be preferred but it's not a dealbreaker.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not really as long as it's not super duper bulky.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 in

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Solidworks, Matlab, some light CFD (Ansys). The 8th gen i7 would be preferred for what I'm planning to use it for.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?Occasionally play games, maybe GTA/War Thunder/Farcry... would like to play latest games on high with good frame rates 30+.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like it to be reliable and last 4-5 years. I also would like it to be professional so I could bring it to research meetings/conferences and not have it be too obnoxious or scream gamer. The MSI GP63, which I'm contemplating, is barely asthetics wise. No other requirements though.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I found two laptops that I'm thinking about but have trouble deciding on and would appreciate any recommendations on these two, or any other similar laptops that you would recommend: CUK N857VR: https://www.amazon.com/N857VR-Gaming-i7-8750H-Windows-Notebook/dp/B079NHXMS3/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1523833565&sr=1-3-fkmr0&keywords=Clevo+N857VR

    MSI GP63: https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GP63-Leopard-013-Performance-i7-8750H/dp/B07CCPVG5Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1523833800&sr=1-1&keywords=GP63

    Thank You!

Wondering if this laptop is good for what I need

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 10:51 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1200 USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't mind not having a super thin laptop but I don't want it to be super bulky either. Preferably under 6lbs

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'm going to be running art programs like Photoshop cc and Sketchbook. I'm also going to do some heavy gaming.

    • *If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Fighting games like Guilty Gear, Tekken, SFV and BlazBlue but also play racing games like Forza and some shooters like Overwatch. I want them all to be able to play at 1080p 60 fps. The settings don't matter to me as much.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like it to have good build quality, good display quality, 120hz, and Good thermals. Battery life has to last at least 5 hrs

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I found this laptop coming out(https://www.amazon.com/STRIX-GL503GE-RS71-NVIDIA-1050Ti-2666MHz/dp/B07BZYQ4J2/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1523855293&sr=8-6&keywords=asus+120hz+1050+ti+laptop) that I think fits everything I need but I am not sure about the specifics. Is the display good? Does it last around 5hrs? Are the thermals good? I heard from some post that said the 8th gen Intel CPU's produce higher temperatures than the 7th gen ones and that concerned me. Are there any laptops that are better?

US, Oculus Rift-ready gaming laptop, $1000

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 05:22 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 but I might be able to go a bit higher if I have to. United States.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't need 2 in 1. I would prefer best specifications over battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness do not matter.

Gaming (Minecraft, Oculus Rift, possibly Dolphin) and CAD (likely AutoCAD and Inventor, but depends on what I have to use for college)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Minecraft with many mods, various Oculus Rift games, and GC & Wii games on Dolphin. For non-VR games, I don't need the best settings, I can tolerate medium-to-low settings as long as there's no lag. For VR games, I really want to play at good settings.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would prefer a touch screen, and stylus compatibility.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Needs Bluetooth (obviously). Needs to be able to handle at least 20 open tabs for long periods of time (It's just how I work). I don't know much about computers so if anything is too vague please tell me. I also plan on using a Virtuix Omni with the Rift, I don't know if that affects anything.

Student in the UK looking for a thin and portable laptop to also play some games on at ~£1000

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 09:44 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~£1000, UK

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't mind about 2 in 1, need good battery life (at least 6 hours) and want good value specs.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important as I will be carrying it around all day and repeatedly putting it in and out of bags.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or MacOS

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferably 14" or smaller

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I want to be able to play recent games (GTA V, Hitman, Farcry 5) along with 3D game development software (Unity etc.).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I would like to be able to play games at medium to high settings at 1080p with at least 30 FPS.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard and reliable build quality are essential, a touchscreen would be unnecessary for me but a finger-print reader would be nice.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would like a small, light laptop that I am able to carry around with me to have a good enough battery life to last all day at school, but also powerful enough to play games at home.

    Thank you in advance!

    Dell XPS 15 2017

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $2000 - US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    Any

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Less than 5lbs

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" - 15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    VMware & Some gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Casual gaming. I have a desktop as my main gaming rig.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Reliability, good screen & touchpad

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. There are many other laptops out there but I question their reliability or customer service. Costco has a killer deal on a maxed out XPS 15. I could wait for the 2018 model but am probably saving at least $500.

France, 1500€, 15" for video and music

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 04:17 PM PDT

Hi! I'm currently using a decent desktop for video editing and music composition (orchestral music with virtual instruments) as well as an unusable 2010 Macbook Air. I'm looking for a new laptop to trash my Macbook and substitute my desktop since I'll be an exchange students for a few months, and want to continue editing video and writing music while away.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: About 1 500 €, I'm from France.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specs

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'm used to my lightweight MB Air, I think I could do with under about 6 lbs.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. About 15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. After Effects & Photoshop, but no 4K editing. FL Studio with some heavy RAM & CPU extensive instruments and plugins (my desktop has 12Go of RAM + i5 750 and it's feeling a bit short), also I already have an external sound card. No gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A SD driver would be nice if possible, but I can do without.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. While I won't be working with 4K in After Effects, a 4K display would still be nice, but again I can do without if it's really more expensive. I don't care about touch-screen and the fancy stuff. I just want the laptop to do the job.

1500€ is an approximate budget. I could exceed it by a bit ideally I would like it to be lower and closer to 1000€ (I'm no video editing professional and don't mind not having the hardest-latest-fastest-strongest of them all)

I did some research and came up with a few names. MSI WS63 (though way out of my budget), XPS15, XPS13... Please enlighten me haha! Thanks in advance
