Intel 8th Generation 6-cores are here

Intel 8th Generation 6-cores are here

Intel 8th Generation 6-cores are here

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 12:54 AM PDT

It was rumoured for a while, but now it's official.

    Intel's 6-core 8th generation processors are here.

They use the same architecture as previous 6th and 7th generation and also the same integrated graphics solution. However, they have 2 more cores and improved boost speeds. Overall, there should be a 30% performance jump over the previous 7th generation , 4 - core processors, like the 7700HQ.

What do you need to know:

    • The Intel® Core™ i7-8750H will be replacing the 7700HQ at the same price point and the i5-8300H will be replacing the 7300HQ.

    • Power consumption and heat generation remain the same as the 7th Core generation.

    • The i5-8300H and the i5-8400H are still 4 core processors, but with higher speeds and hyper-threading now.

    • Most laptop models will remain the same, don't expect anything radically new, just the same models with an updated processor. But there will be some new models from MSI, Asus and Gigabyte.

    • For those not pressured by their budget, I suggest it is well worth to wait for the upcoming laptops with Intel 8th generation 6 core processors. These laptops will start shipping in the first week of May.

    • For those who are looking for a good deal, already prices for gaming laptops with Intel 7700HQ processors have been dropping for the past month as retailers are clearing stock for the new Intel 8th Generation models.

    Sub $200 laptop for college

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 06:36 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: $200 or less

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. All I need is good battery life and for it to be under $200

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not a huge concern

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Chrome

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Microsoft word, I already have a gaming laptop for heavier programs

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As long as I can type on it I am happy

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Basically, I already have a gaming laptop, but the battery life only lasts about 2 hours (buyers remorse). For this reason, I will need a cheap laptop that I can take to class and type up any notes that I need on. I will transfer these notes to my normal laptop when I get back to my dorm each day.

    Architecture Student

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 08:57 PM PDT

Hey! I am a architecture student looking for some laptop suggestions. I am looking to hopefully aim for under $2k. I use a lot of AutoCad, Revit, Rhino, and most Adobe suite programs. I'm hoping to find something more portable, with decent battery, that I can tote around to class but still handle some creative work. I game a bit but nothing to intensive (DotA, overwatch). I was looking at the XPS 15, or possibly more in the Lenovo workstation direction. I'm new to quadro cards and workstations in general so I'm not sure which direction is best. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

[U.S., <$900] Solid Laptop for College

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 07:14 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $900 max, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications are preferable, good battery life would be an added plus.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Both don't matter that much to me.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Hearthstone, some indie games like Shovel Knight

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Only light gaming, no FPS or settings targets specifically.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A nice keyboard is an absolute must, IPS display if possible, a good array of ports (USB 3.0, HDMI, etc.), built-in webcam, and solid build quality

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. For the most part, I'll be using this laptop for web browsing, video streaming, and taking notes, since I will be going to college soon. I'll only be gaming on this laptop occasionally, so I don't really have a need for discrete graphics or anything of that nature. I would prefer if the fans weren't too noisy either when the laptop starts heating up, but this is more of a QoL feature that would be nice to have.

    Editing laptop on a budget!

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 06:23 PM PDT

Hey guys, I know there has been multiple similar topics here but none of them were exactly what I was looking for. I just started filming videos in my free time and I really need a new editing laptop. Unfortunately, I'm on a tight budget so the cheaper the better and the higher I can go is 650$ CAD. I would only need to be able to edit 1080p video kind of smoothly and wouldn't game or do anything else that is demanding for the laptop. What would you guys advise me? What minimum specs should be looking for?

    Thank you!

Total budget and country of purchase: 650$ CAD, Canada

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I really want the best specs for the money

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important at all, I have to cut somewhere!

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Any size is a good size

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I would mainly do video editing at 1080p

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nothing specific, I just want editing to run "smoothly"

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion What specs should I be looking for when on a budget?

Is a refurbished thinkpad yoga s1 any good? it seems to have everything i want RN in a laptop. Are there any modern equivelents at a similar price point?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 12:06 AM PDT

in my serch for a new laptop i found the old thinkpad yoga s1.

what i like: thinkpad, good price [my limit is $600], range of motion [i dont care about tablet mode i just simply make ample use of the range of motion on the hinges]

the things im unsure about; the i7 4600u [just how outdated is that?], getting this thing as refurbished.

so is it a decent laptop? im wondering if there are any issues with this laptop that has poped up over the years. also im curious as to if there are any modern equivelents.

oh yeah i need it for basic college usage.

$700-1K US. Need a portable machine for work, school, and 8+ incognito mode chrome tabs

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 11:59 PM PDT

I'm going back to school soon for a career change. First some certs then my associates and want a laptop that will run VM's while still being somewhat light and hopefully a 2 in 1 and last me thru my studies. My current job also requires me to regularly have 6-12 or more large Excel tabs open and my current chromebook really struggles once I have 6+ plus tabs open on chrome. Plus I've also had a few compatibility issues with Excel and Google sheets. Until now I've managed by using Google remote desktop with my chromebook to have my desktop handle the heavy lifting. However that mess is for the birds please r/suggestalaptop help me pick my next machine.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1k US dollars is the upper max if something screams must have. However I would like to stay in the 700 to 900 range.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A 2-1 would be awesome as 30 percent of the laptops use will probably happen from the couch or car/plane and the ability to replace my now 4 year old tablet would be awesome. My own research though found very few 2 in 1's with more then 8gbs of RAM however.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? The thinner the better but I would prefer a more metalish build so understandably I will have to make a compromise somewhere.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 bonus points if sellers included or add a discount for office

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 inch if it's a 2 in 1 I already own a 13 inch Chromebook that handles Netflix and web browsing for me and the wife. Seems like 13 inch is the sweet spot for tablet mode. If it's not a 2-1 I could definitely go bigger.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'm gonna run alot of VM's so 12gb or more of RAM would be awesome. My own shopping makes me think I might be best off with more than 8gb. Not 100% sure 8+gb is needed but it's an idea that got in my head(tell me why I don't need that much). Would love the ability to run Photoshop edits as well but any serious edits or high res video editing would likely be done on my desktop

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The only gaming I will do on this laptop will be retro style gaming to kill time. Like ff7 or old ps1 games... I have a full speced out gaming desktop that can handle any AAA title I would wanna play

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I want it to look good and last as a daily on the go machine back and forth to school/work. Being able to easily self upgrade RAM and storage would be perfect to keep it going longer. I'm a pixel Queen and I refuse to allow any display panels under 1080p in my house. Like the clickbait in the title says I would also love to be able to run quite a few streaming video tabs in chrome.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I will be using this laptop for school and work at the same time. This laptop will have to make it thru my Network+ and security+ classes I'll be taking after work and hopefully make it thru me getting my associates right after. I know a lot of people post without doing any sort of looking. I have shopped around quite a bit and if you make a suggestion please be okay with me asking follow up questions. I wanna discuss options not just click a link and add to cart. I came hear from r/buildapc and I am sure glad you guys are doing what you do so thank you for your time in advance!

Small laptop for college (11.6-14 inches, India, 600 USD)

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 11:49 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around 600 USD. India.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A 2 in 1 form factor would be nice but it's not something I need that badly. I'd rather have better specs if I had to choose between one or the other. Battery life doesn't have to be super long, anything above 5-6 hours would be good.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Fairly important, since I'm gonna be carrying the thing around a bit. Less than 2 kg would be nice.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 11.6 to 14 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Just some light gaming, like osu!, DotA 2 and visual novels (do they even count as games lmao). I'm not really sure what programs an engineering student would need, I only start college in July.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? It would be really nice if it could run games like Nier: Automata even at lowest settings 30 fps but that's probably asking for a lot so it's alright if it can't

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality, good keyboard and (if possible, though I doubt it) 1080p screen.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I did take a look at the HP Pavilion x360 11-AD022TU but for some reason there are no reviews for it anywhere online and amazon won't deliver it to where I live anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Edit: also it'll need to run like this many tabs comfortably

    New Laptop for School/Work

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 11:32 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: United States, preferably <$1200 but will go up to $1300

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Not particularly fond of 2 in 1's. Would like decent battery life 8+ hours, but will generally have easy access to outlets, so not a major concern.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Would definitely prefer a laptop <3 lbs. Would prefer a thinner laptop, but certainly not the greatest of concerns.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. Ability to also run Linux would be a +, but not necessary. Not a fan of Mac or Chrome OS.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13", but willing to consider 14"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Very light photo editing in Photoshop or Illustrator.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Very light gaming. Potentially LoL with lowest settings.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good, ergonomic keyboard and trackpad are important to me. My current laptop is a touchscreen, and sometimes the trackpad randomly stops working, which forces me to use the touchscreen. It drives me crazy since it's difficult to precisely navigate with just the touchscreen.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The primary use of this laptop will be for school/research in the biomedical sciences. I do light image editing, data processing, statistical analysis in R, and use programs for molecular modelling. These programs tend to be light on spec requirements. With that said though, I tend to have a lot of programs/windows/tabs open at once. I also don't own a TV, and don't plan on buying one, so all my Netflix/Hulu viewing is done on my laptop, so a nice screen is important as well.

The Dell XPS 13 has piqued my interest, but concerns with battery life, trackpad, and other things that keep showing up in user reviews have me concerned. These concerns typically don't show up too much in reviews on most websites, but in the customer reviews on Dell's website people seem to be having quite a few problems.

    Thank you in advance!

How do I choose between very similar laptops?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 07:21 PM PDT

I need specific specs and found multiple laptops with the exact same specs, I needed i7-8550U with 16 GB of Ram, 512 SSD, a very good battery, with preferably intel 620 graphic card and to be 2 in 1, the other specs don't matter much, but I found these laptops HP Spectre x360 13, Asus ZenBook Flip S UX370, Dell XPS 13, Lenovo Yoga 920, and Razer Blade Stealth, now how do I choose between them when they have a very similar prices (where I live)?

ps. in case anyone says these are general models and the specs I asked for are special models, I know that, I just didn't write them here

Looking for a general purpose laptop: 14", USA, $800

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 10:55 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Total budget: max $800 but would like to be closer to $700, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Would like a a 2 in 1 to be used for note taking in grad school, but that's not super important. Hoping to be in around 8gb of ram and have an SSD to keep it running longer, but I admittedly don't know much about hardware so I can be persuaded. My old HP (2012 dv6) had 6gb of Ram and a 640 GB mechanical hard drive.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not so important, I carried my giant HP all through undergrad.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. would prefer 14" but could go down to 13. No bigger than 15.6.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Down the road maybe some video editing and music composition, but otherwise basic note taking and media consumption

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard and touchpad would be good. Good build quality preferred. I'm a bit of a klutz.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Just looking for a general use laptop with potential to be a heavy lifter down the road. I would love a 2 in 1 — I've kind of had an eye on the Surface pro but don't want to settle for the M3 — as I like the option to use the device as a tablet. Streaming movies and shows, note taking, general web browsing. The usual stuff.

Thoughts on CyberPower's Tracer II VR800?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 10:31 PM PDT

Currently looking for a good gaming laptop. I found two laptops priced at roughly 12 to 13 hundred dollars, both of which had quite similar stats.

The first is CyberPowerPC's Tracer II, shown here: https://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Tracer-II-15-VR800-MK-Gaming-Laptop

Haven't seen much about it, there aren't many reviews on it online. If anyone could post their thoughts on it, that would be greatly appreciated.

The second is the PowerSpec 1510. http://www.microcenter.com/product/486481/1510_156_Gaming_Laptop_Computer_-_Black

Currently stuck between the two, as both seem quite powerful, with similar prices and similar specs. I'm going to college soon, so I would prefer decent battery life and a lightweight (relatively speaking) laptop. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Help me choose between two similar laptops

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 10:20 PM PDT

Hi guys, I am confused between the 2 laptops

    1. Acer Aspire 5, Price 550 USD Amazon (i5-8250u, MX150, 8 GB DDR4, backlit LED display, 48 WH battery, FHD)

    2. Acer E-15, Price 600 USD Amazon, (i5-8250u, MX150, 8 GB DDR3, IPS, 64 WH battery, FHD)

1st is cheaper, has DDR4 and lighter. Battery life is weaker than the second option.

2nd one has IPS, longer battery life but the only thing that worries me is that it has DDR3. I would like to know how much difference would the option of DDR3 or DDR4 would make in this case? Processor and GPU are the same

April 2018: Gaming, CAD, Editing and General use laptops Recommendations and Guide

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 07:27 AM PDT

The list below shows some of the best laptops at various price points, some laptops on this list comes with the latest Intel processors (8th gen) and the MX 150 graphics card. Refurbished laptops do provide good value for money and I have included a few of them

Battery life, build quality, weight and 2 in 1 capabilities are some of the general requirements of a student laptop. The laptops on this list were chosen based on the above mention qualities with specs being the secondary need (the specs are still competitive for the price). Laptops above 15.6" were left off the student laptop list as above 15.6" would lose some of its portability.

    $100-$180

    Fusion5 Budget Laptop

    • Display: 10.6" FHD 1920x1080 IPS
    • RAM: 2 GB
    • 32 GB SSD (128 expandable via microSD)
    • Weight: 3.1 lbs

The Fusion5 is by no means a powerful laptop, with only 2 GB of RAM multitasking will not be easy, it takes about 5 hrs to get a full charge and it gets warm while charging. This laptop makes this list as for the price you get a great IPS screen with FHD resolution. It's great for streaming videos and if you don't want to get a tablet

    200-250

    Acer Aspire 1 Budget Laptop

    • Intel Celeron N3450 Quad-Core Processor (Up to 2.2GHz)
    • 14" Full HD 1920 x 1080 Widescreen Display
    • 4GB RAM
    • 32GB Internal Storage
    • 8 + hrs Hours Battery Life
    • Windows 10 Home
    • Weight 3.64 lbs

If you want to watch videos at a good resolution the Acer Aspire 1 is a decent budget laptop with a full FHD screen

    HP Stream Laptop Budget Laptop

    • 14" HD,
    • Intel Celeron N3060,
    • 4 GB RAM,
    • 32 GB eMMC,
    • Office 365 Personal for one year

A basic student laptop ideal for children or those in high school who need to brouse or type documents

    Lenovo N22 Budget Laptop

    • Intel Dual-Core Processor 1.60GHz
    • 4GB RAM
    • 64GB eMMC SSD
    • 0.88" Thin, 2.8lbs Weight,
    • Battery: 14 hours
    Pros Cons
    Thin Simple design
    Cheap slow at multitasking
    Light poor webcam
Can be upgraded No num pad

    ASUS L402SA

    • Display: 14" (1366 x 768 pixels)
    • Processor: Intel Celeron 1.6 GHz
    • RAM: 4GB
    • Storage: 32GB
    • Battery life: 6 hrs
    • Weight: 3.6lbs

This laptop has many mixed reviews and your needs will determine how you feel about it. If you need a quick laptop for cheap this is not for you. If you want a low price, good display (for this price) and multiple ports this system is for you

    Dell i3168-0028BLU 2-in-1

    Tablet Mode

    • Display: 11.6" HD 1366x768 touch Display
    • Processor: Intel Celeron N3060 up to 1.6 GHz

This laptop comes with the Max-Q design. This makes this laptop thin, light and powerful. Being a Max Q product the GTX 1080 graphics card clocks slower than other GTX 1080 graphics cards. In terms of power it falls between the GTX 1070 and regular GTX 1080 graphics cards. This trade off reduces heat, fan noise and power consumption

Other laptops fall in each of the price points with identical specs and build quality and are separated by personal preference, price points that have been excluded such as 600-700 pose no major difference to the laptops below it on the price scale (those laptops would be selected based on preference of the purchaser) Feel free to ask questions and or make suggestions on what can be included or excluded.

LG Gram 2018 15' or Spectre x360 15-BL152NR for CS freshmen Student

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 09:48 PM PDT

I'm looking for to use as a carry-around for my CS degree. Originally I set on the LG Gram 15' 2018(https://www.amazon.com/LG-Light-Laptop-15Z980-AAS7U1/dp/B078WT8MH9/ref=sr_1_11?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1522729999&sr=1-11&keywords=lg+gram) because of the battery life and lightness. The Spectre x360 15-BL152NR is becoming more appealing, as I can get double the ram and SSD space for the same price. My main concern with the Spectre x360 is its battery life compared to the gram. I have a desktop that I plan to use for gaming and performance intensive tasks, so performance is well below battery life, screen quality and weight for me in terms of importance. Any suggestions on which I should go with?

Best laptop for Sims 4, under $500 in the US

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 09:24 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Under $500, in the US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money, prefer no 2 in 1.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very. It won't be super mobile.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Nothing bigger than 15, prefer smaller actually.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No heavy photo or video editing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Sims 4. Current laptop doesn't play smoothly. Graphics don't need to be highest quality (laptop mode is still fine) would just like something smoother.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Backlit keyboard is on the wishlist. Optical media is nice, but not a deal breaker. Prefer no touch screen.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Helping my best friend find a laptop to do basic internet tasks on & play the Sims 4. She's in love with my Macbook Pro, but her budget is small.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Decent storage (500GB min maybe ?) and an addition of being sort of foolproof laptop would be greatly appreciated.

The time has finally come to buy a new gaming laptop, I prefer a laptop to a PC as I might travel soon, and under £1k because that's how much I can afford with my wages and without completely burning through my money. Its supposed to be a multipurpose laptop cause I write, read, watch stuff and sometimes work on my computer, however, I do enjoy video games so I nice gaming specification is required as well.

[CA] 15"-16" $1000-ish gaming laptop suggestions?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 07:15 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'm comfortable with spending somewhere around $1000 CAD for the laptop.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A decent battery life and great specs will be preferred.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness are kind of an important factor since I will be taking it to university, so it'd need to be a portable size. Doesn't need to be too thin and light, but not bulky either.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, for sure.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15-16" probably, though I am totally open to suggestions here.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I plan on gaming. Games I would like to run are the Borderlands series (1,2, PreSequel), The Sims 4, Smite, and maybe Skyrim, if possible.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The games I currently wish to be able to run are listed in the previous question. FPS doesn't need to be crazy, like a steady 60 FPS is just fine. As for settings, they don't need to be on ultra, but for games to look nice would be ideal.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'm not picky here, just a good keyboard and touchpad, really.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I feel like I just want to give insight on my situation here. So I used to have an Alienware M17x, but all of a sudden one day it just shut off, and never turned back on. I got it checked in a shop, and the verdict was the charger circuit on the motherboard fried, iirc. Anyways, so I am now trying to search for a decent gaming laptop that I can take to university. In terms of budget, it can't be too expensive because money is a little tight right now, but I have means of scrounging up some cash, so it doesn't need to be dirt cheap either. I'm not a huge tech buff, so if you feel that I am mistaken by any of my "requirements", please let me know. Any and all help will be appreciated. Thank you!

US buyer, budget $500-600, looking for a general use/light gaming laptop with ~15.6" screen.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 06:58 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $600, United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money probably.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thickness doesn't bother me too much as long as it doesn't feel like I'm lugging around a small dog. I suppose something that's too thick would be an eyesore.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I like to do video/photo editing. I would like to play games, but my current laptop can't handle it. The programs I use are Sony Vegas Pro 15, Photoshop 2015, and the general stuff like internet browsers, Spotify/iTunes, Steam, etc.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Rainbow Six: Siege, and Jurassic World: Evolution when it comes out in June, those are my main gaming wants right now. As for settings, I just want it to run well without seizing my computer and to not look like dog crap.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'm not sure what a great keyboard and mouse really entails, although I'd prefer a touchpad where the left and right are separate buttons; the one on my Toshiba is all one solid pad and it broke fairly early on, which has kind of put me off that type. I'd also like if the speakers were on the sides or top (I don't understand the point of a laptop with speakers on the bottom). I don't need anything fancy like fingerprint scanning, touch-screen, VR compatibility, etc. Back-lit keyboard would be a plus, but isn't absolutely necessary. Reliable build quality would be much appreciated. Like I mentioned, my Toshiba's touchpad broke early on, limiting my ability to right-click, thus forcing me to get a separate mouse for it. I've had to replace the screen, and will probably have to a second time within the year. It's from around 2013, so it is quite old, but still. I'd like something that will at least last me a few years without needing any expensive repairs.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I don't know whether to go with SSD or HDD. I do tend to gather a ton of movies and music on my computer, and that naturally takes up a lot of space, so I'm not sure an SSD would do the trick. I can sacrifice startup times and such for enough space for all my stuff.
