I'm looking to buy a new router - should I consider the RAM size for the state tables? Posted: 30 Apr 2018 11:39 AM PDT After watching Mark Furneaux's series on pfsense, I'm wondering whether it's worth considering the size of each hosts state table. In this video, he states that every connection to the router uses 10kb. He then stated that even at that moment he had 30000 connections without really doing much. That's 300MB, jeez. I am considering getting this router, the Ubiquiti ERPoe-5. It will be used to deal with between 50-100 devices connected in total (through AP's etc. distributed over 3 houses). However, this video has made me question the capability of it if it only has 512mb of ram. I can't find much information on this subject and since the onboard ram of routers doesn't seem to be a very big advertising feature (having to look up the data sheets from the manufacturer), I'm wondering if Mark's information is actually correct, or perhaps I'm misunderstanding what he's saying? Can someone help me out? Cheers! Also, I have no need for poe, can someone suggest a router with similar capabilities that may be at a cheaper price without the poe? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Apr 2018 03:56 PM PDT I bought a 9u wall mount rack to hang in my new (office) closet thinking I would have space but its going to be a little tight. Do you guys think it will be ok if I just keep it on the floor? Do you think it would still be necessary to mount it to the wall while it is sitting on the floor? I'm new to this but I'm buying a new house and running cat 6 behind all the tvs and to my desk, and two access points in different rooms. I just don't know if it floating on the floor would be good for the cat6 going in. [link] [comments] |
Does anyone have advice for consolidating 5 computer/monitor combos into something more manageable? Posted: 30 Apr 2018 04:56 PM PDT I started a new job a while back and I'm trying to fix a moderately FUBAR computer display situation. We have 5 TVs whose only purpose is to display a looping slideshow of products we sell. In order to accomplish this, each TV is wired to its own separate computer in another room that runs 24/7. In order to make any changes to a slideshow, the mouse, keyboard, and monitor at the computers need to be manually unplugged and plugged into the computer corresponding to the TV showing the slideshow you want to edit. If any errors or popups occur on a computer, it's shown on the corresponding TV since the TV is just a display for the computer with the maximized sideshow. Normally I would follow the classic 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' adage, but my coworkers aren't very tech savvy and I know there is a more user-friendly and space-freeing solution. I'm not concerned with how difficult the solution is to set up - I've got a good enough grasp to install any solutions - but I am concerned with how difficult it will be to use day-to-day. Another problem is finding a price range we'd even consider, and I'm also not up-to-date on what sort of solutions are out there these days. Since each TV only needs to display a 2-5 page slideshow and is used for literally nothing else, I'm really hoping to eliminate the 5-box setup. So, with that said, I have a few questions about possibilities:
I'll probably have some more questions after feedback, and tomorrow I will check each display TV for the types of connectors they have. To anyone who read this, even without any feedback to offer, thank you for your time! [link] [comments] |
Access Points setup in Concrete House Posted: 30 Apr 2018 12:38 PM PDT Hello! I believe I have a similar request/problem to others that comes up about extending / improving the Wifi network. Problem Statement: Get a single wifi network that works across a concrete house - you can walk across the house and not lose the signal. Speed is maintained. Here's the background of the issue: I live in the US. I'm going to visit Pakistan and wanted to take on an small effort to improve the Wifi at my relatives house. They are not technical, so I want to go there and fix the issue so they can benefit. I want it to work without any manual intervention, or tech-support type of calls. I don't really think I can go out and buy equipment over there - so I want to take everything from the US in 1 shot, and I can return whatever is unused.
My plan: Purchase a $100 router (like netgear or TP-Link C9) Purchase 3x TP-Link EAP225 and place them equidistant - ~50 ft apart. These will be wired. Purchase CAT6 cable. I need to get 50 ft, 100ft and 150 ft approximately. Purchase 1 TL-SG108PE TP-Link 8 port POE switch. What do you think of the plan? Any tips or guidance ?? Additional questions: I didn't focus on Ubiquiti because of cost. But should I? Should I have modem->router->POE Switch OR modem->POE Switch->Access Point or is there a such thing as a router with POE (and wifi broadcast capability)? Is it possible to have 2 separate wifi networks being served by a single access point? In case one of the ISPs goes out, at least the other network will work. They already have 4 ISP at the house. https://www.tp-link.com/en/faq-1261.html is not clear to me. Does anyone know if the networking equipment works with 220V? I don't see that on the TP_link product specifications. TP-Link says it should be fine. [link] [comments] |
Are 1Gbp ports beneficial if internet plan is only 100/100mbps? Posted: 30 Apr 2018 08:29 AM PDT So my ISP gives me 100mbps up and down but I want to know if I should buy an ARM device that supports 1000mbps ethernet or should I just stick with a device supporting 100mbps as that is what my WAN speeds are. I already have a 1Gbps router. I know the transfer speed from the internet to the router will be 100mbps but what about when the data has to now go to the ARM device? Will that also be limited to 100mbps or would it switch to 1Gbps or is that not how networking works? I remember learning that the highest possible speed capable of all devices is what gets agreed on? In this case, if I buy a 100mbps capable ARM devices from WAN to the device my speeds will be 100mbps but if I were to initialize a connection/transfer in LAN and the device supported 1Gbps I would have a 1Gbps connection? Posted: 30 Apr 2018 07:22 PM PDT Here, where I live we have a common network (router 1), I bought my own router (router 2) and want to connect to router 1 to get better signal at my home. LBut I'm having problems. So take a look at the configurations. Where I'm wrong... After some recommendations I changed to: router 1 - https://imgur.com/a/J4E5Bqz router 2: LAN: 192.168.1.2 DHCP: off I'm connecting router1 LAN to router2 LAN. When I save the DHCP disable at router 2 I'm not able anymore to connect to the wifi or cable. Keep "connecting" for ever. My only way is setting manually a IP on my computer config (using 192.168.1.110, inside de router1 range). Wifi - Router2 - configuration - https://imgur.com/a/VDDggwD Fallowing this video at this moment https://youtu.be/J5QJb3O19zI?t=19m32s When I connect back to router 1 and try to access the router ip (192.168.1.2) dont work. This is my second try... [link] [comments] |
wifi router antenna upgrade question Posted: 30 Apr 2018 07:20 PM PDT hello I'm thinking about upgrading my Wifi routers antenna's. I have an Asus RT-N16 router (running factory firmware), which has 3ea (2dBi) antenna's. Currently our wired ethernet setup through the router has been working perfectly for our needs, so we are not really looking at buying a whole new router. But it would be nice if we had a little bit stronger signal at certain spots in and around our home, so I have been thinking about simply upgrading the factory antenna's, and from my research, I think a 5dBi antenna would give us a good mix of far and near range. But I'm wondering can I just upgrade 1 of the 3 antenna's, thus allowing me to keep the 2dBi usable range as well as adding the extended 5dBi range or will this cause some sort of "balance" or interference problem between the two different powered antenna's? thanks [link] [comments] |
Using a Gigabit 'Uplink' as a Downlink? Posted: 30 Apr 2018 06:39 PM PDT I was given a used Cisco 24 port switch by my work, a 24 port 10/100 with dual gigabit uplinks. Would there be any adverse effects from using one of the uplinks as a downlink? Basically, I plan to use one of the gigabit ports as my input from ISP, one for my main PC/server so it can use the most of my gigabit service, then use the10/100 for the rest of the house's devices. It seems to function as wanted in this configuration, but is there any reason I shouldn't do it that could cause issues down the road? [link] [comments] |
Modem says ipv4 only in IP provisining mode? Also says Override MDD. Posted: 30 Apr 2018 05:55 PM PDT Does this mean my router and modem dont do ipv6? Posted: 30 Apr 2018 11:39 AM PDT So I currently have a Time Capsule (latest model, right before they were discontinued) and that is extending to another Time Capsule that is exactly the same. They are currently running in bridge mode between the two, but I have a shop that doesn't have any network in it currently. We want to put a wireless network out there but the airport devices are now discontinued, so how would one do that now? The idea is that we want a roaming network, so as I leave the house I can pick it up in the shop as well. We are going to run Ethernet out there and a switch, but what about a wireless AP? Hosting my own website, trying to get my domain name working. Posted: 30 Apr 2018 02:52 AM PDT I'm hosting my own website for fun and trying to understand how to set up the DNS system set up. So far I can get a hello world app running accessible at my public IP address. I'm confused about how to manage DNS with Google's domain management system. Here's what it looks like: Name Servers: Two options: 1) Use the Google Domains name servers: (I checked this option)
2) Use custom name servers DNSSEC Enable or Disable: enabled Registered hosts (glue records) There are two fields here, host name and ip address. I added mydomain.com / my-public-ip address and www.mydomain.com / my-public-ip address Registered hosts is one of the areas I'm confused about. This site seems to suggest that I would put the IP of the DNS server that is storing the target IP (my server), rather than the target IP itself. Elsewhere it seems people are putting the server ip. Synthetic records: a number of forwarding options here that I didn't touch Custom Resource records: Several fields / drop downs here. Name / record Type / TTL / Ip addres What do I put in these records? [link] [comments] |
Wifi Channel selection and bandwidth Posted: 30 Apr 2018 09:30 AM PDT I have three OpenMesh A60's (latest "stable" firmware) in a 2200 sqft NYC apartment that are bridged to a router. No matter where I am, I am no further than 15 feet from an AP. My ISP is providing 400mbps service. The question revolves around channel selection for maximum bandwidth/speed. When I use the auto-channel select function/optimization, I get very slow speeds (~30 mbps) as measured by multiple testing tools (the empirical performance is also bad)....when I set all three to the same "default channel" (2Ghz @ channel 6/20 width, 5Ghz@ channel 149/80width) it appears I get much better performance (~300+ mbps)....being a network amateur, this makes no sense to me. I was hoping the Reddit Hivemind could shed some light on this and perhaps give me some definitive suggestions. (BTW, I also have the fast-switching and band selector options activated although I have not seen any effect by toggling these)....thanks again for your help! [link] [comments] |
Asus RT-AC66U not giving 1 Gbps transfer rate between LAN machines Posted: 30 Apr 2018 04:35 PM PDT I've got 2 PCs connected to the router by cable, I'm trying to transfer a large amount of data from one and I'm only getting a 10MB/s. Any suggestions?

Posted: 30 Apr 2018 04:16 PM PDT So I am attempting to port forward my router. According to the instructions here I have done it all correctly, and this is what the interface shows: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/315006726384386048/440651966004199449/Screenshot_694.png I believe this should work, but when I use this site to check whether the port is open, this (ip is hidden for privacy ofc) is shown. Any ideas, reddit? [link] [comments] |
Router with Dual-/Triple-WAN, Multiple SSID (one w/ VPN), 8x ports Posted: 30 Apr 2018 02:34 PM PDT I live in a rural area so have two DSL lines currently routed through individual modems to a Peplink multi-WAN router. From there I have an Airport for WiFi, another switch with hardwire ethernet, and yet another with PoE for cameras. I was about to add another wifi access point that runs a VPN client for streaming from geo-restricted sites when I decided it would be nice to simplify this setup if possible. Ideally I'd like a router that can load-balance across at least 2 and possibly 3 WAN connections (I may add an LTE WAN for certain higher performance applications.. Yes, LTE is faster than 2xDSL at my house). I'd like it to support 2 SSIDs, one of which routes over my client VPN connection and the other should not route over the VPN. Finally my ideal router would have 8 gigabit ports so I don't need an extra switch in the picture. I was hopeful that the ASUS RT-AC3100 would do the trick, but its multi-WAN appears to be limited to 1 Ethernet port and 1 USB, not the 2 USB that I need. I guess the latter is intended for a cellular modem. I've seen mixed reports about the Synology RT-2600AC. It definitely doesn't have as many ports as I'd like, but it does at least support 2 WAN ethernet WAN connections. Unclear if I can set up a VPN client on only one SSID. I'm willing to spend $500 on a Peplink Balance One if that's the only option, but it does not appear to support a VPN client at this time (some rumor that it will in late summer). Am I just asking too much here? Anybody know of a router that meets all these needs? My goal is to simplify my network, so I'd rather not go with a more complex custom setup if possible. Thanks! What is a consumer "Wireless Router"? Posted: 30 Apr 2018 02:16 PM PDT Whats actually in it? A switch + Access Point? Is that it? What do I actually need for a great internet connection (WiFi)? Can someone guide me to some resources for wiring telephones? Posted: 30 Apr 2018 10:14 AM PDT Not really home networking, but not professional. Doing this for my mom's small business. I've taken a Cisco networking course before and that let me wire up the building with cat6 for computer networking, but I'm trying to help with phone networking too. We had at&t setup a punchdown panel in the basement here and the previous owners left much of the old wiring to the jacks still in good shape. We tried connecting a phone to a jack and the phone said no line. Here are some photos https://imgur.com/a/mC8icaa Edit. The last photo is the phone system at the office. I'm unsure what it is honestly. Sorry for my ignorance here. This may not make any sense, but if you guys could link me to a resource for phone installation or give me some pointers that would be great. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Transfer speeds: NAS vs USB 3.0 external hard drives Posted: 30 Apr 2018 01:50 PM PDT I read in another post that the bottleneck in a NAS is the drive, not the controller, but here's an article that says the opposite: https://gizmodo.com/5399370/building-a-nas-skip-the-performance-drives I need more storage, but I already have 1 external drive in an enclosure, and 2 more drives in a USB 3 dock, with USB 3 cable, plugged into a USB 3 port on the host computer. None of these 3 extra drives are achieving USB 3.0 speed. I thought about considering a NAS to reduce the mayhem of cables and clutter on my desk, but not if I can't achieve USB 3 speeds. SSDs are still not cost effective compared to HDDs. Are any advancements coming in 2018 that I should wait for or do I just get yet another external drive to expand my storage and deal with the sub-USB 3 speeds? [link] [comments] |
Draytek Vigor 130 with BT Infinity Posted: 30 Apr 2018 06:16 AM PDT I am planning to use a Draytek Vigor 130 with BT Infinity (FTTC). I have done research on this and I've found that I'll need to set my router to PPPoE mode with BT's username and password. I have updated the Vigor to the latest BT centric firmware. Are there any other things I need to do within the Vigor's settings, or can it be left at factory settings? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Extending Network - Issue with Guest Wifi Posted: 30 Apr 2018 01:25 PM PDT I recently moved into a new place and found that wifi from the router provided by Virgin doesn't cover the whole house, I still had an old router from before I moved so I connected them via ethernet in order to extend the network. I've been 90% successful, I have internet in the back part of the house and the handover when walking between the routers goes fairly smoothly.
The problem is that the guest wifi doesn't work when connecting on the second router and I can't work out how to get it working - or if it is even possible. If I connect to the guest wifi on Router A and walk to Router B everything works. If I try to connect to Router B I'm unable to obtain an IP
My setup is below: Router A ---->Router B Router A: Virgin Media Hub 3.0 (VMDG505) Router B: Technicolor tg589vac v2 I have 3 SSIDs setup, a 5G, 2.4G and Guest. I replicated the wifi settings from Router A to Router B Router A is set to 192.168.0.1 Router B is set to 192.168.0.99 Router B is currently set to Bridge Mode and is connect LAN to LAN DHCP has been disabled on Router B
On router B under LAN interfaces I have the option to set a local IP address for the guest network - I've set this to 192.168.1.99 and disabled DHCP (I noticed devices connected to Router A's guest wifi were given IP address 192.168.1.* instead of 192.168.0.* and hoped this would fix the issue)
On Router B, looking under IPv4 Routes I can see that the guest interface above has a destination of 192.168.1.0 - I believe this should be set to 192.168.1.1? But I don't know of any way to change this?
I did have Router B setup previously WAN to LAN but this left me with the same problem.
Let me know if you need more info from me. [link] [comments] |

I'm sure I'm being an idiot... Accessing an AP with no known ip address. Posted: 30 Apr 2018 12:24 AM PDT So a while ago I had an old router lying about, decided to use it as a wifi AP so its got a hardline to my actual router on one of it's switching ports as well as my pc, it routinely has 7-10 wireless connections. However now that nothing is plugged into its WAN port I can't for the life of me get an IP address to manage wifi privilages. My router will spit out IP addresses for everything on the network including wifi devices that are using the AP in question but as it's acting as a switch it's invisible on that layer. Any ideas how I go about managing the AP? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Apr 2018 11:37 AM PDT So I'm upgrading my UPS, I've been using a tower style UPS for the longest but want to buy a rack mount to make everything nice and tidy in my server room. Anyway, looking at refurbed ups's and there seems to be two options for each price point. Either I get much less battery capacity with a newer model UPS or I get a large UPS in a older model. Currently I have a 1500w UPS tower and it says it would run my rack for about 40 minutes on battery... I have my servers on auto-shut down if they run on battery for 10 minutes, but during hurricane Harvey it was a godsend to have 1500w to charge my phones and keep my wifi going. So I'm tempted to go with a larger battery... For example for around $350-400 I can get either a newer APC model with is only 1000w: http://www.refurbups.com/APC-SMT1500RM2U-Smart-UPS-1500-LCD-RM-2U_2?sc=27&category=44120 Or I can get an older model that is 2700w for. Similar pricce: http://www.refurbups.com/APC-SUA3000RM2U-Smart-UPS-3000-Rack-Mount-2U?sc=27&category=44120 Just looking for some advice. I have no idea if there's any fundemental benefit between the older or newer models... Since I already have the 1500w the 2700w might be a little over kill, but maybe there's no point going for the newer model ? [link] [comments] |
