Windows 10 April update (1803) megathread

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 12:14 AM PDT

    1803 live! • r/Windows10

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 10:18 AM PDT

Suddenly have a new drive in Explorer after 1803 update.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 02:48 PM PDT

So I now have an extra drive that's 450MB. It has 36MB free space and nothing shows up on the drive.

Windows Partition tool doesn't allow me to do anything with it.

So...how do I get rid of it?

Dictation mode in today's Windows Spring update

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 01:35 PM PDT

    Hi,

Out of all the new features in today's update, I'm most excited about the dictation mode. You press Windows + H and the microphone bar turns on and started listening.

My question is how do I retrigger the listening mode without pressing Windows + H once to remove it and then one more time to turn it back on and enable listening mode?

How do I make it start listening again with a single shortcut?

Seriously, why isn’t Windows Movie Maker a thing anymore?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 06:17 PM PDT

I first got into movie maker when I was a kid just because it was easy and fun to use. Why isn't it around anymore??

1803 still reopens some running programs and apps on shutdown/restart. Other than shutdown via Alt-F4, is there a way to stop this?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 05:43 PM PDT

Did they add a setting to turn this 'feature' off yet or do I have to keep using the Alt-F4 shutdown dialog and/or shutdown.exe?

Windows 7 freezes zipping/unzipping large files

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 05:26 PM PDT

It just started doing this recently. Anything over about 2 GB or so will cause the zip/unzip speed to slowly decrease until it's down to kilobytes, by that time I usually have to force restart.

I've tried all sorts of tips online, even getting into regedit to delete a registry entry that would fix the old Vista problem, but it wouldn't let me. Even with special programs. It's like this computer just fights everything I try to do.

I've tried WinRar and 7zip, problem persists with both. I also scanned the C drive and there are no bad sectors.

Any help would be very much appreciated, I really need to get some files backed up ASAP.

April 2018 Update Mouserate no longer 500hz SweetLow

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 04:52 PM PDT

    Hi,

Since the update, the SweetLow mouse hz driver no longer appears to work.

As this is for a Microsoft mouse that is discontinued, and all warranty is void anyway, I would like to change this.

Does anybody know of a short term solution?

    Thanks, Michael

How can i add a version of dos and windows to one computer?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 07:19 AM PDT

So I am currently building a "sleeper build PC". however, I want to boot into any version of DOS for a true sleeper experience. I would like to boot into DOS straightaway, and is there anyway i can then switch to windows 7 or 10 after that.

Or point me in the direction where I could find what I need.

Search bar not working with Windows Server 2016

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 06:15 AM PDT

So we are trying to use Windows Server 2016 as a VDI client machine, however, we can't seem to get the search working. Clicking the icon or typing when the start menu is open just does nothing, as well as pressing Win + S.

Windows Search service is running and we even tried installing the feature "Windows Search" (reverted it again).

Somebody know this issue and got an idea on how to resolve it?

    April 30 update and Ubuntu 18.04 Hyper-V

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 03:18 PM PDT

    Hey all,

So as a long time windows user but linux developer, I have always had to tussle with dual booting, or running multiple PCs to develop in linux but use Windows for music, games, video editing, etc. Now that I have my beastly Threadripper system, though I do have a somewhat older beefy 6700 desktop-replacement laptop.. I pretty much only use my one PC.

What makes it work is I use VMware Player 14 and a linux OS (usually Ubuntu, sometimes Linux Mint), and it works OK.. good enough to develop with, but I still see lots of mouse issues, copy/paste sometimes works, etc.

So I was beyond ecstatic to learn from a colleague about the new Hyper-V Type 1 support for Ubuntu coming in todays update. I now have that update, and when I turned on Hyper-V, disabling VMware basically, and rebooting, then go to create a new Hyper-V Ubuntu Quick Create guest... sadly.. its not there.

I am hoping this is just some sort of simple overlook, delayed release, etc..

Anyone know what is up? Despite my best efforts to google on the matter, all I get are articles from a few weeks ago talking about how MS and Canonical partnered, how Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will be a first class citizen, etc..

I would really like to start using the type 1 Ubuntu VM, as I am told not only will we get better mouse/clipboard/drive management, but it should run near native because it is running in a type 1 hypervisor.

Is there a way to connect my Surface and my desktop securely and wirelessly?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 10:54 AM PDT

My goal is to make my Surface sort of an extension of my desktop when I'm home, particularly with regard to saving files - I get a lot of e-mail attachments with music files (and frankly, I'd prefer not to keep porn on my Surface) which I would like to send to my desktop.

Is there a way to do this securely? I'm pretty wary of Bluetooth and the "shared" folder as I live in a high density neighborhood.

Thanks very much to anyone with ideas - I'm still educating myself about network security.

Most recent update for windows 7

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 05:21 AM PDT

Hi, my computer just got bricked because of the new windows update. I have restored to a earlier time that my computer was running and it was a year ago. I did not make a restore point because I thought it was a fluke but I was completely wrong. I am not sure which one it is but I am deducing that it is 'windows malicious removal' update. It will update to 100% and will be stuck there for hours. If you force restart, it will load and be stuck at 35% and stay there for hours. Why I am complaining here is because of the fact I cannot access safe mode w/ and w/out networking. It will load and immediately go into the update and will be stuck at 35%. Am I the only one with this issue? Is there anyway to diagnose this problem or do I have to system restore or image restore? and lastly, do I have to be aware of a certain update under 'kb------' update? Thanks for the assistance bros

I accidentally launched "Set-ExecutionPolicy unrestricted" on ALL users, then re-set it to restricted only for my user. Should I leave it as unrestricted for the admin?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 03:21 AM PDT

I was testing some stuff with Apache Cassandra, and I was having unexpected errors.
I noticed that the prompt was telling me that the execution of the Cassandra server was being obstacled by the Restricted policy.

I tried to launch "Set-ExecutionPolicy unrestricted" from the powershell to check if this would solve my issues (it did), but now I want to go back to the restricted mode to stay safe.

    The problem is this:
When I launched "Set-ExecutionPolicy unrestricted", I launched it for all users.
Now I don't know whether I should launch "Set-ExecutionPolicy unrestricted" for ALL users (including the admin).

I tried to look on Google on whether the admin should be restricted or not by default, but I had no luck

It all went fine now it is on Getting files ready for installation 60% Is this because the drive and installation method are slow or is it another issue.

    Computer trouble

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 04:01 AM PDT

My computer was off all day yesterday and it seems to have developed a problem. When I close the lid it doesn't change until it is fully closed in which it will not turn back on. I believe this is caused by a recent update. If I shut down the computer it will not start up and I'll have to force shut down in order to start it up. If I uninstall the update when I restart it will not start up and will stay on the startup screen, needing me to force quit again. I'm not sure what to do.

Windows update has bricked my system into a infinite loop

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 08:39 PM PDT

The update back from december 12 has constantly failed and every work around i tried to do never worked (even deleting it from my ssd and reinstalling windows) so i just ignored it, over and over (postponing it, stopping it from updating, so on.) While taking a shower it decide to go rogue and the update went through to the point my computer reset, now it loads up right before the windows logo (never showing) and then complete restarts. Over and over and over untill i shut it down. Trying to boot off a usb get me to the windows logo and right after it goes away it black screens until i shut it down. My pc was originally windows 8 that i upgraded to windows 10, i don't know if this is why the usb boot device wont load for some reason but my computer at this moment is not usable. I don't mind having to wipe my ssd and hdd and reinstall windows but i can't even get to a point to do so.

Space bar, enter key, and backspace key not working for short period of time when computer starts up.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 09:51 PM PDT

I noticed a few weeks ago that every time I opened my laptop and took it off of sleep the space bar, enter key, and backspace key would not work. What I have noticed is if I press each of them over and over again for about a minute it eventually goes away and then they work as normal. How can I fix this? I have tried every solution on: https://appuals.com/fix-backspace-spacebar-enter-keys-not-working/, and none of them worked.
