    Mesh Wifi Suggestions

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 08:03 PM PDT

    Hi All,

I'm currently living in a 2,000 sq townhouse (3 levels) my main router and modem sit on floor 3 where my gaming room is. I get around 300-400mbps hardwire with my current ISP when I go to the first floor that gets cutdown to 70-100mbp via 5ghz Wi-Fi.

I'd like to get this up to around 200-300mbps range.

While doing research there seems to be a huge split on which mesh network product exactly is doing the job best (google, eero, linksyns etc).

Anyways, if anyone could help point me to the right product with my current setup that would be greatly appreciated.

P.S: The townhouse is wall heavy.

Issues with high latency and varying download/upload speed

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 07:00 PM PDT

I recently had my modem and router moved to another location in the house by my isp (Midco) to accommodate a new TiVo upgrade. Ever since it's been moved my download and upload speeds have been all over the place. (I pay for 75mbps. Get between 5mbps and 70. Usually around 30-40 if wired.) I just replaced the modem and router today so I don't think they're the culprit. Midco just came out and fixed some old fittings trying to see if the connections were out of whack somewhere. The problem still persists. The biggest issue I have is my ping. I used to average around 39 but now a days I get between 39-600. Usually between 60-250. I'm a complete noob to this and have no idea what to do. All gaming devices (2 ps4s and 1 pc) experience ping and all devices are wired directly into the router. Midco is denying that it's their side at fault. But I don't know what to do. Any help is appreciated! Thank you! Ps. I apologize for any info I might have left out

Edit 1: My upload speed is almost always 7mbps. Which is what I pay for. So no issues with upload speed despite my header.

    Wireless bridges with 802.11ad 60GHz?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 06:30 PM PDT

I have the Netgear Nighthawk X10 with 802.11ad, and a Gigabit Fiber connection. Unfortunately, my router/modem are on the opposite side of the room as my 4K "smart" TV, Chromecast Ultra, Roku Ultra, Xbox One S. That's 4 devices with an Ethernet connection.

As I have perfect LOS and it's only ~8-10 feet away, this seems like a perfect usecase for 802.11ad, as I understand it's better suited to replace Ethernet cabling and same room Wifi.

I don't want to drag a cable to a regular bridge, as it'd require crossing a doorway and a hallway.

I could buy a second X10 and set it up in bridging mode only as an access point, but that seems like a waste as it's $400 + tax. Any chance we are ever going to see more simple client devices with 802.11ad support? A basic 4 port Ethernet switch that can establish a 60GHz connection across a hard to reach/cable path seems like perfect usecase for this. Else what is the point of 802.11ad?

    Need IP Camera for DOJO

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 06:32 AM PDT

Hey, hoping you guys can help me out with something. I'm looking to buy a camera for my Dojo not for security purposes, but so the parents can watch their kids train while they sit in the lobby.

There is a TV in the lobby with a Chromecast so I'd like to have the video feed on my laptop then cast it to the TV.

    • Some Info/Requirements:
    • 1 IP Camera
    • Both Ethernet & WiFi preferably
    • Under $200
    • View live video in chrome
    • I'd like to be able to view the live camera feed directly from the camera without having to go to an external cloud service
    • I have 120VAC available where camera will be placed
    • 720P at least
    • not looking to record anything

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

Advice on whether a router or mesh is appropriate?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 04:52 PM PDT

I just moved into a new townhouse. We have FIOS, and we have CAT5 outlets in the walls. The building is four floors, and the router is on the second. However, the signal only penetrates one floor.

I'm a mac user, and would like to be able to do a wireless time machine setup, maybe even set up another NAS device for general storage. I also like to play video games around the house, so simply plugging into CAT5 for everything isn't an option.

I'm not clear on whether I should buy a mesh system, or if I should get a router for WDS and just plug it into one of the CAT5 outlets on the top floor. I'm not even sure the Verizon FIOS unit allows WDS. Based on all of this, what kind of setup would you go for, and can you recommend any specific routers? Any price is fine, but if you could recommend one high end and one economic model that would be great. Thanks for reading.

    Ethernet/Smurf Tube Install

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 04:00 PM PDT

So, I was thinking, would it be cheaper to get smurf tube installed than to get ethernet installed? Also, who would I call for installing smurf tube? Would I still call a low voltage electrician? Also, if I get ethernet install, if I have two cables to a single wall plate, would that be considered one cable drop or two cable drops?

    • I have a ubiquiti edgerouter lite x.
    • Using Qbittorrent 4.0.4.
    • Enabled upnp2 on router
    • Enabled upnp in qbittorrent

But for some reason I'm still getting a yellow status light that says I have no direct connection.

TP-Link AV2000 Powerline - What to use 2-Port Gigabit for?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 03:46 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I have just moved to a 2 story rental townhouse, brick walls & floorboards so am using Powerline and it seems to work well so far.

I have a Netgear D7000 modem/router and Synology DS1815+ NAS in a cabinet upstairs the only place it will go.

I'm using a TP-Link TL-PA9020P Powerline adapter which has 2 Gigabit ports. The other one is downstairs next to my home theatre setup going into a 8 port switch (2 TVs, 2 PS4s, nVidia Shield, & other stuff). It seems to be able to stream 4k video from my NAS okay.

I am wondering how to make best use of these 2 ports on the powerline. The TP-Link utility gives me a rating of 1400mbps between the 2 adapters. I have one cable going from the router to the powerline right now, if I try to use 2 the whole thing shits the bed and it all goes down, so I'm assuming you don't do that.

Any ideas what is the best way to make full use of both ports of the powerline adapters? Perhaps at the other end, plug one straight into the nVidia Shield (which is using the most bandwidth from the NAS with playing 4k video) and the other into the network switch for the rest of the devices?

TL;DR - what is the point of the 2 giga ports on the tp-link HomePlug AV2 powerline adapter.

Help with debugging seemingly erratic ping and game connectivity within home network

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 01:15 AM PDT

So, I really hope this is the appropriate subreddit and I am not violating any rules by asking this basic question here. Please correct me!

The basic problem: While trying to connect computers in my local home network, I run into seemingly inconsistent problems of machines not able to ping each other.

On our home network which is based around a Telekom 'speedport smart' router, my friends and I frequently try to play video games in local lan modus. We have a desktop PC and four laptops which all run on various newer versions of Windows, mostly on Windows 10. We disabled all the firewalls, on every single machine in every setting we could find. The only Antivirus that is set up is a Avira Antivir and some Windows Defender on some machines, which we tried to disable as far as possible.

We are all on the same subnet, having IP addresses of 192.168.2.103, 192.168.2.106, 192.168.2.113 etc.

Sometimes, two or three machines are able to ping each other, sometimes not, and once it seemed to change after a reboot. We tried to play different games (Divinity 2, Warcraft III), and in some games, machine A, B and C would see each other and be able to join, but D would not connect to anything. In other cases, B and D could interact, but A and D were completely out of the picture. Also, which machines were able to ping each other and which could connect within games was also not consistent.

I know some things about the networking stack, but I am completely at a loss here. Everything I find online is about "disable your firewall" (yeah) and "enable port forwarding!" (obviously not applicable), so I am here to ask if there is anything I could do to debug that problem.

I would be super grateful for any tips on how to proceed. And if this is the wrong subreddit or if I did anything else wrong, please correct me.

PS / Edit: here are two diagrams. The first one shows what happens when somebody tries to ping somebody else. The second shows what happens when somebody hosts a game of Warcraft III, and who can see the game in the lobby. All firewalls are turned off.

The devices are labeled by letters of the alphabet, with the last part of the IP in brackets. Device A (192.168.2.115) is a quite old laptop. B, C and D are new laptops. E is a standing desktop PC. We are aware that sometimes the "ping-ability" is not symmetric, for example: B can ping C, but C cannot ping B. We double checked, and yes, that's actually the case... :(

All devices are using wireless lan to connect to the router.

I need a VPN to use my iPhone as a VR headset, but I'm stupid.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 03:11 PM PDT

Setting up a VPN makes me want to cry.

I've been running a Parsec gaming machine with Paperspace for nearly a week now and enjoying it very much. I've been using the iOS app Moonlight to access the machine via GeForce Experience for Windows. Paperspace's high speed, low latency network has allowed a lag-free gaming experience even when I'm connecting via 4G LTE.

The next step I would like to take is to use my iPhone as a VR headset. The iOS apps "KinoConsole" and "Trinus VR" offer Windows server software that I can install onto my Parsec VM, and client apps for my iPhone. They translate information from an iOS device, and Windows recognizes this as VR headset. The problem I'm having is that these programs require that the server and client be on the same network. Since Paperspace is a cloud computing service that's not going to happen.

I've attempted to set up a VPN connection between my Parsec VM and my iPhone using ZeroTier. I can ping the private IP address of my Parsec VM provided by ZeroTier from my iPhone, and vice versa with a latency between 20 and 60ms. However, the client and server apps fail to recognize each other and connect. Perhaps I've mis-configured ZeroTier? I feel that if I can configure a VPN so that they share the same private routing table and a single public IP address that my iPhone apps would work. I have assigned a fixed IP address to the Parsec VM, so if the I could get the VM to share its public IP with my iPhone I think that would work.

I plan on having only two devices connected to this network: my Paperspace Parsec VM and my iPhone.

    Broadband Bonding HELP!

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 02:28 PM PDT

Context: I live in Venezuela. Now, if you didn't know, Venezuela is a socialist country that regulates everything that has to do with the public (basically everything). Naturally internet is highly regulated to the point that there is literally NO COMPETITION. The government owns the only relevant ISP. Anyway, because the government runs an uncontested ISP in a socialist nation the most expensive and best internet available is 10Mbps download and 1Mbps upload for less that $5/month. My needs are quite simple... video games. That's it.

Problem: Need to join up several internet lines from the same ISP (10 down 1 up). Its for real time application (online video games). Any suggestions?

Server Delay in Certain Game (Age of Wushu)

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 10:35 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

I've had this problem forever since playing this game: Age of Wushu. Basically the problem is:

Whenever I change zones (maps) my server delay spikes up and down constantly till I change maps again or re-log into the game (close the client and open it and log back in).

I am running the VPN Battleping on West Coast LA 6. My physical location is on the East Coast of Canada (pinging 75-85 ms to this Battleping server).

I have tried changing DNS servers, re-setting router + modem, look at Resource Monitor when the lag spikes occur (The process dnscache appears over and over again).

The game utilizes an anti-cheat called "Snail Game Protect" which I presume is sending my connection to China causing the significant lag spikes (I have checked Pingzapper on debug mode and noted it was connecting to a chinese IP every time I changed maps).

Below is a video of the noted problem:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03Cwg9tmqOc

As you can see, this IP appears over and over again then disconnects. However when changing maps the ping becomes perfectly stable. For whatever reason, the game isn't connecting to the VPN the majority of time when changing maps (zones). I have asked many people about this problem and nobody has a solution. The game is fantastic, but I don't think I can keep playing with this problem anymore.

Can’t connect to AC1200 Wireless Gigabit Access Point AP300 management pages?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 01:53 PM PDT

I have an AC1200 Wireless Gigabit Access Point AP300 that I'm using to extend a WiFi signal as a repeater.

It wasn't working so I reset it and now I can't get into the admin page via the http://tplinkap.net URL as mentioned in the documentation.

I am connected to the TP-Link device on my laptop, but when I go to http://tplinkap.net I get a no internet connection error in Chrome.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

    Convert wired ethernet to wifi

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 07:40 AM PDT

My wife needs to connect an IP phone that she received from work to our home network and it only uses ethernet. Her home office is on the second floor where we do not have ethernet jacks. I think I need a wireless bridge but I'm not 100% sure.

I need a device that I can plug the ethernet of the IP phone into and it will communicate with the router over wifi for calls.

We have Xfinity 200 MB service and her iMac gets a wireless 130 MB down signal from her office so the signal should be good enough for calls I think.

Any advice on a specific device would be greatly appreciated. Would prefer the best performance, doesn't have to be the cheapest one out there. Reasonable cost is fine.

    Thanks in advance.

My ISP didn't inform me that they were going to throttle download speeds ...

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 12:26 PM PDT

Torrent download speeds to be specific.

I am in dire need of textbooks every now and then, and if there's no cheap copy available locally, i torrent the books just for study's sake.

However, my new Cable broadband isp did NOT inform me that they used to throttle torrent download speeds by reducing them to 25% of the original offering (i.e on my 4MBPS, i get 160 kb/s max speed instead of 480 kb/s).

My only regret is that i did not ask them as well, but today when i experienced the issue, i called their tech support and they informed me that this is how things were.

is there any thing i can do ? any prospective action i can take against them ?

please do keep in mind that i am situated in Karachi, Pakistan. I am not too familiar with the penal codes here, but any general aspect would greatly be appreciated.

    thanks !

    Dual WAN with route splitting

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 12:00 PM PDT

I have two internet connections at home.

My primary connection is a fiber line with a static IP, and a Netgear router running stock Genie behind it using the 192.168.1.0/24 space.

My backup connection is a cable modem gateway combo unit, with one external IP and the internal IPs on the 10.0.0.0/8 space. I don't connect any devices to this network. I could put it in bridge mode (turn off the routing and just pass the public IP to the device connected behind it) if I needed to.

My cable TV package includes "in-home streaming" which allows me to watch any of my TV stations as long as I am in home, aka behind my cable modem. But I prefer to stay connected to my much faster fiber connection.

How could I connect the cable modem to my primary network, and create routes for my cable ISP's IP space (I know the required subnets) to use that to reach the internet.

I'm open to adding necessary hardware or software into the chain to accomplish this.

coaxil/cat6 wall outlets, running wired to living room.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 11:43 AM PDT

I want to wire my living room with cat6. I was looking at the possibility of buying a new coaxil / cat6 paired wall outlet rather then drilling a new hole and installing a new outlet. Would this be a good choice? In the picture it looks like the cable just screws in the back like it would if you were running it to a tv/modem. Would that be accurate?

Also, should I go with traditional punched down cable or use a keystone jack? I'd prefer to go the extra mile and follow best practice, but if both are viable the keystone jack seems easiest.

Having internet connectivity issues only on my laptop, please help! :)

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 06:50 AM PDT

Hi, so I have a TP-Link router which is attached to my ISP Router by an Ethernet cable. Now the ISP Router is downstairs while my TP-Link Router is upstairs, now whenever I'm on my laptop it frequently disconnects I'll say every 5 to 10 minutes and I have to disconnect it and reconnect it every time. However, when I'm on my phone or iPad via WiFi connected to the TP-Link Router it never disconnects. Initially I thought that the problem was with my laptop however when I connected it with my ISP Router downstairs, it didn't disconnect once so for obvious reasons it has to be the TP-Link Router. I've tried everything I know but to no avail, I'd really appreciate some suggestions on how to fix this because it's come to the point where I'm not even using my laptop. Thanks.

    Dorm network

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 01:11 AM PDT

    Hello HomeNetworking,

my current setup looks like this (Note: I can't connect via WiFi directly to the WiFi repeater):

    • Laptop is connected to WiFi repeater (via Ethernet cable)

    • Laptop opened WiFi Hotspot

    • Desktop and all other devices connected to Laptop (via WiFi)

Problem: When the WiFi repeater loses connection (which happens very frequently), my WiFi Hotspot is getting closed and I lose connection to my Desktop (running Plex).

I would like to be able to stream Media from my Desktop to my Laptop whatever happens to the WiFi repeater.

    My idea:

    • Connect WiFi repeater to a Switch

    • Connect WiFi AP to Switch

    • Connect Desktop to Switch

    • Connect Raspberry Pi (Pi-hole) to Switch

    • Connect Smartphone to WiFi AP

    • Connect Laptop to WiFi AP

Does this setup allow me to stream media from my Desktop to my Laptop even if the WiFi repeater isn't working?

Just got gigabit internet. Worth upgrading N66U?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 09:32 AM PDT

Not looking to spend a lot... But I could justify something in the $100 range if it will likely improve my wifi speeds. I have a 2 story house, but it's basically a box shape and under 1500 sq ft, so range is not really an issue.... But I am curious if I could be getting more wireless throughput than the 80-90 ish mbps I'm getting on the 5ghZ band from the first floor.

Would you say there are $100 upgrade options for me? Or will any difference be pretty nominal? The 66u has been good to me but I've noticed a little more instability with age when a few streaming devices fire up at once.

Edit: recommendation must have at least 4 ethernet ports
