Has anyone gone from the iPhone X to the Galaxy S9 Plus? I'm thinking about making it my first Android phone.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 08:17 PM PDT

I've had a ton of iPhones, going all the way back to the iPhone 3G. I've had a lot of Apple products in general (MacBooks, currently have two Apple TVs, an Apple Watch, AirPods (lol), and my wife's iPhone in addition to my X). I've never had a large problem with Apple and really liked the (mostly) seamless integration between products. However, that all changed today.

I'll try to keep this short, but I took the trip of a lifetime over the summer with my wife to Paris, Rome, and Cairo and took a ton of pictures along the way. It was the most amazing experience of my life. I recently got rid of my MacBook and built a PC, and upon moving the pictures from my external hard drive to my new PC, realized that I only had the 100kb thumbnails, which are relatively atrocious in quality. Apparently what happens when you sync an iPhone with the iPhoto app on a Mac is that it moves the originals to the Mac and replaces the fucking originals on the phone with scaled down versions. Of course, I wasn't aware of this so I backed up everything (thumbnails included) to an external hard drive, reformatted the MacBook, and sold it. Needless to say, I was absolutely devastated when I realized all I have left from those photos are grainy, 720p compressed versions.

My wife says I'm being irrational (she's probably right, TBH), but I'm absolutely ready to sell every Apple product I own and give Android a shot, specifically the Galaxy S9+. The S9+ looks great from the reviews I've seen, but the X is my favorite iPhone to date so it has a lot to live up to. Additionally, I'm extremely active and the Apple Watch is great for how quick it is to log runs. Of course, Apple requires an iPhone to use the Watch so I'd have to replace that with a stand alone running watch as well. All of this amounts to the situation being a complete PITA if I went through with it, but I want to make sure I don't regret it a couple of months from now.

Have any of you gone from the X to the S9+? Or can you relate to making the switch in some capacity? I'm just looking for honest feedback from others who may have made this transition. Are there any quirks I should be aware of with Android/Samsung that I probably have never experienced with Apple? I've heard Samsung phones are notorious for bloatware, but can it be easily removed (e.g., can I just uninstall things or do I need to install some custom OS if I want that)? Are there any issues that have been reported with the S9+ in particular that I should know before I get one (e.g., screen issues, dead pixels, battery life problems, etc.)?

Lastly, how easy is it to back up the entire phone to my PC, including original copies of my photos? I'm not that interested in cloud storage because I've found every service either charges a fee or compresses pictures in some fashion (such as Google).

Samsung S7 Sprint to AT&T issues (cell coverage, texts and WIFI calling)

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 07:53 PM PDT

Hi - I recently got my phone unlocked and moved to AT&T from Sprint. I am having the following issues that AT&T says they can't resolve: 1) can't send pics in MMS, texts fail 2) no WIFI calling. I had it with Sprint and now the function isn't appearing in the Options at all and 3) when I drop cell service for any reason, it doesn't reconnect when I get to a covered area, it still stays offline and I have to restart phone. AT&T says that these are just things I have to deal with but I feel like there should be some way to fix the OS. I appreciate any ideas or in pointing me to resources. Thanks

I have a few videos on my S6 and, since the Gallery app doesn't display titles, I want the thumbnails to be more accurate. Is there any way to change thumbnails with my phone?

    Cant view images online?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 07:47 PM PDT

Motot e4 plus - carrier is Sprint - There are some websites where I can't view the images, all that appears is a little icon in the upper left corner of where the image should be (the icon seems to be a picture with a cloud and a hill). This is the same for any web browser (think I've tried two others) and I've tried the steps on Google's website to fix the issue: https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/112568?hl=en but it still doesn't work.

I deleted firefox app, how do I recover the bookmarks?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 09:33 PM PDT

I didn't sync my bookmarks to my firefox account... Only after deleting the app did I realise all my bookmarks were gone.

I've tried rooting my phone and downloaded undeleter and diskdigger but those didn't help. It only looks up image files not the ones for cache data. ( or maybe I'm just doing it wrog )

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! The only guides I can find online recover images or videos, not app data.

    Many thanks! :)

    Virus?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 08:58 PM PDT

I've been getting a lot of popups and random websites (that pop up) on my Samsung Galaxy S6. I have downloaded and deleted some stuff recently, so that may have something to do with it. I have installed many security apps in the past, but none seem to be able to repel this persistent issue. It has gotten worse today, and I need help. Why is this happening and how do I stop it?

Device and setup for physically and vocally impaired stepdad

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 08:30 PM PDT

My stepdad rolled his truck in the way to work in October and is now paralyzed from mid-back down and still has very limited hand strength and basically no dexterity. He also has potentially permanent vocal cord damage from being intubated and a very week diaphragm so his voice is not effective for device control. Luckily he's still there 100% mentally!

He's used to Android and my mom setup his old "military grade" style phone with a pop socket she can wedge between his fingers and a stylus in a grip band. We can Gerry rig stuff for him to hold the device and use the device so that shouldn't be an issue.

We would like to get something with a larger screen but still manageable (5-6" probably), fewer physical buttons that require dexterity and force, new enough for app support but easily affordable. We don't need flagship quality, he's your average 50-60 year old as far as use is concerned.

I've done some digging for accessibility apps but it'd be nice to find something with an off the shelf "geezer" setting for large icons. Unfortunately most apps are voice based or assume mental disability with lack of fine motor control.

They live in the boonies too and Verizon is really about the only carrier option.

tl;dr boils down to needing an affordable geezer phone and app or community suggestions

Any way to enhance public wifi signal? I have poor signal at my work, and do not have access to the router.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 08:26 PM PDT

Where I work I lose my wifi connection in certain areas, or I get just one bar. I've been searching for some kind of antenna or device that I can plug into my phone (Galaxy S8) that would enhance my wifi signal. I was thinking maybe something I could plug in using my type-C adapter but can't find anything.

It's public, free to use wifi in the building, and I don't have access to the router.

Anyone know of any options that I may have?

Android and handsfree vs past iOS experience

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 09:39 AM PDT

So I'm trying to figure out if this is a known issue with Android or possibly could be my car. I switched from iOS to Android (Note 8) back in November of last year. Love it! However, there is one big difference that I've found when dealing with Google Assistant or better yet voice commands while in my car (2010 Ford Fusion with the latest version of MSFT Sync). Previously with the iPhone and my car, anytime I needed to use Siri for voice commands, it would work without any issues, with the internal handsfree mic (car). However, now with Android, it doesn't work. The only think I can think of is that with iOS and handsfree, the phone would mimic a fake outbound call which would allow you access to the internal car mic. With Android, I don't it has the ability to do that unless there is some app or setting that I haven't discovered yet. Just wanted to throw it out there to see if anyone else had the same experience.

    Thanks!

Notifications not showing since Android O update

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 02:02 PM PDT

    Hello,

I own a Oneplus 3T and since I updated to Android O, notifications aren't working. I'll give an example of what's wrong:

WhatsApp, OneFootball and other apps that should- but don't- send push notifications, only send notifications if they're running in the background, but mostly not if I've killed the app in the app switcher.

So for example: I open WhatsApp. I send my mum a text asking if dinner is almost ready. I kill the WhatsApp app. 5 minutes later, she replies "right now!" I don't get a notification.

If I then open the WhatsApp app, it takes a little longer than usual to load up, my whatsapp homescreen shows, and only when that's completed, it seems like the messages come in.

I have Android 8.0.0, unrooted, on my OnePlus 3T, Google Now Launcher. No apps have access to my notifications. I've googled on and on and all the settings on my phone are set correctly, but I'm more than happy to run through them all again.

Help dearly appreciated, any other specifications needed I'll be happy to provide.

Can't swipe certain words after my note 8 ran an update.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 06:53 PM PDT

So I have a Samsung note 8 and the other day my phone ran an update. I don't really know what it changed but since the update happened when I try to swipe a cuss word it will always pull up another word. I have tried to key it in and then swipe it and it doesn't work and it doesn't seem to save some of the words but others are saved either way doesn't matter. I feel like I've looked through pretty much all the input setting and have reset the keyboard setting to default and still nothing.

Rooting to possibly recover lost photos - need advice on what I've found so far (Moto X phone)

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 11:40 AM PDT

About a week ago now the Snapchat folder in my gallery disappeared, and the photos saved in there were nowhere to be found on my phone. I still haven't been able to figure out how this happened, but it's a big problem for me because saving photos/video through Snapchat has been the only way I have been able to take anything on my phone for 6+ months now. The back facing camera died + my camera program no longer works, for reasons unknown, and the only way I can snap any pics is via Snapchat and then save them. Yes, my phone is really an old hunk of junk, I know. To be clear since this came up a lot when I was first searching for recovery methods, I don't use the Memories function Snapchat offers, I save them directly to my phone. I have been pulling my hair out trying to see if there is a way I can get them back, and it's been a confusing journey since I know zero about phones, so I would really appreciate any help. I will try to lay out what I have dug up so far.

    1) I used the program DiskDigger to search my phone for the photos, after combing through the folders on my PC myself. It found thumbnail sized versions of them. Unfortunately in the FAQ on their webpage it states that the only way to possibly look for the original photos (and recover video files) is to root the phone. The only reason I am still clinging to the hope that my data is not gone is the found thumbnails + when I look in the directroy on my phone that DiskDigger states the thumbnails are in, nothing shows up, so I am hoping the same goes for the full sized pics.

    2) This leads me to my main problem. DiskDigger recommends One Click Root to root your phone, but my model (Moto X/XT1060) is not supported. Of course. So, I went googling, and found info here and clearer step by step directions here. It seems like a risky process, but my phone is so crappy that at this point I don't fear bricking it in my quest for these photos. My main concern is....

    3) In order to root the phone I need to flash it with a ROM. Ok. I looked up what that is cause I have never heard of it, and a guide I found said that flashing it will wipe my phone of all it's data. Apparently it is the bootloader step that does it? Which would basically make the whole effort worthless, since I am trying to root my phone to save my data. More furious googling later, trying to find a way to flash AND save my data...

    4) I find this. It says it has a setting to keep data, though I don't see any description of what "data" in this case means? I admit I did not go through every single page in the thread yet. And here is where I am stuck. I haven't tried this yet, because I don't fully know if it's really the tool I am looking for, or even what the heck an FXZ is and if loading one is what I need to do in order to root my phone. Also I have to admit despite all I have read so far that I am sort of confused whether or not once I flash this ROM, if the actual rooting process after is going to wipe all my data as well, making it pointless to try to save it in the flashing phase.

I feel like I am at the end of my google-fu rope, and really need the input of someone who knows what the heck they are doing to tell me if there is any way I can get my phone rooted to look for these photos. Or if it seems like a wild goose chase to start with and the photos are long gone now. I am really hoping that is not the case, because a lot of them were of my cat who passed a few months ago, plus a lot of family photos, so I am willing to do whatever needed to try and get them back. And I hope this all makes sense, as I am a complete Android idiot and everything I have managed to pick up has only come from me trying to find a solution to this problem.

Phone details: Moto X/XT1060, Android version 5.1, on Verizon.

Buying advice for trip to the US

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 09:24 AM PDT

Hey guys, I'm from Europe and will be on a business trip next week. Since my trusty old Nexus 5X is getting slower and slower and the battery barely lasts a day for me, it is the perfect time to upgrade. Where can I find the best deals for some specific phones? I know a few websites in europe which aggregate the prices from a lot of different websites, but haven't found anything for the US yet.

I'm thinking about getting a Pixel 2/Galaxy S8/S9 or similar device with a small-ish form factor and great camera. Any current deals available? I will be in Atlanta, GA or could also order stuff to my hotel room.

    Thanks!

Anyone Know A Way? Take Picture, file in custom network location, less than 2 actions.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 01:07 PM PDT

I'm looking for a way for our shop to take a picture using an android device, select where it goes (AKA Project Picture Folder), and have it just go there. I have SAMBA shares etc., and can make user permissions, but is there an application that would assist in this to make it easy? To clarify; I don't want people to have to copy the picture using ES and paste it into the folder, want it easier than that.

    File system picture changes?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 09:06 AM PDT

Ever since I upgraded my Galaxy s8+ to Oreo I've been unable to view images as albums if I browse to them through the file explorer, it only shows the image I clicked on...

I use quickpic and fx file explorer, if i browse to the image through quickpic it works fine but that's tedious and I have a lot of pictures that I've organize into album folders with folders. Is there any way to have the old functionality back? (other apps?)

Broken screen on galaxy s7. Is there anyway to backup my stuff?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 11:38 AM PDT

Here's my dilemma I recently dropped my phone and the screen cracked and eventually went black. The touch screen is non responsive but the actual phone still works. I still receive messages I just can't see them. Etc. Im trying to figure out if it's possible to use a hdmi that connects with Android to plug into my monitor so I can see and backup stuff in preparation to transfer over to a replacement phone from my insurance. But I realized my touch screen is unresponsive, even if I find the right hdmi it wouldn't respond to my touch.

I read once some people used a type of mouse to control their phone but Idk if that would work.

    Anyway advice? Thanks

I got locked out of my own tablet, Samsung Galaxy Tab A6

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 03:21 PM PDT

In short, I now have a PIN (numbers) password and I have no idea what it is. I have access to the google account I used on it, but all I can do in device manager is make it play some noise or lock it, but I can't unlock it. Seeing how I have access to the account, is there anything I can do to access the tablet itself even though I forgot the PIN? Thank you. Also, I can delete everything from my device manager as well, but I'd prefer to keep the data.
