Got scammed by Curry’s PC World Tech Support

Got scammed by Curry’s PC World

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 02:31 AM PDT

Last week my laptop made a screaming noise from the speakers when using it, so i turned it off and turned it back on. The screen was on but it was showing black and would only boot up once every 24 hours or so and the speakers didn't work anymore. I took it into Curry's (I bought it there) where they said they will send it across to HP and fix it. I waited a week and got a phone call from Curry's in England asking me what was wrong (strange as they told me it was going to HP) I explained it all and he said ok and hung up. Another few days go by and it comes back and they didn't do any repairs and said it had water damage (which is compete bullshit there had never been any water/drink near it as it is a £800 2 month old laptop....) but now they are saying well we can still fix it but give us £350...what should I do? They are completely ripping me off and scamming me. the water is utter bullshit and I can't belive they even said that and the fact they kept it for over a week and didn't do anything to it is suspect it's self.

Need to recover Windows Product Key from laptop that won't boot into Windows.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 05:59 PM PDT

First, I've tried every fix I could find to boot into Windows. It will not work, period.

I put Ubuntu on a flash drive and can access all my files through there, and am currently working to pull off all my old pictures and files.

I'd like to find my Windows Product Key so I can do a license transfer. Any advice on doing that through Ubuntu?

Dead Laptop is a Dell Latitude E6400 using Windows 7, Professional I think.

Is there a way to determine phone activation status based on IMEI number?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 06:35 PM PDT

I recently sold an unlocked iPhone 5c on eBay and am pretty sure the buyer is trying to scam me, claiming he received an empty box. I have a sneaking suspicion that he's using the phone and want to catch him in the act.

Is it possible to find out whether the phone has been activated on a network (AT&T, Sprint, etc) using the IMEI number? All I can find is whether the phone has been blacklisted.

Bookmarks! How do I efficiently sort my bookmarks?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 07:36 PM PDT

The browser I'm using doesn't really handle them very well (Vivaldi).

I'm wondering if it makes sense to save and sort bookmarks just in folders on my computer? I want to, to be honest.

I'm in the habit of having task manager open all the time now but i don't know what the issue is or why opening task manager fixes it.

FPS drop in Fortnite after upgrading to SSD

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 08:20 PM PDT

Hi all, a couple months ago I purchased a refurbished Omen 870-244. While streaming, it would generally run fortnite between 150-200 fps.

About two days ago, I upgraded to a samsung evo 850 SSD and clean installed the windows OS. I reinstalled the nvidia drivers and everything, but my fortnite fps while streaming dips under 100 now and I sometimes get frame stutter.

The only thing I can think of that might explain why migrating to my SSD hurts my performance is that I missed a driver or something. Is there anything else that could be wrong?

    Thank you for your time!

30 Year old hard drive fast clicking. Not booting.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 07:13 AM PDT

Old hard drive, Around 30 years. 10-30 MB are on the drive. Fast clicking noise, Then "Boot disk failure. type key to retry" If i move it, It says "Non system disk or disk error." I'm trying to boot from the original computer it came in, I can boot from 5 1/4 floppy, But can't access C: I've unplugged and plugged back in the hard drive, But nothing works. I have a ST-225 MFM hard drive. Is there any way to get the data off? If it helps i can record the sound it makes.

The clicking noise is here: https://youtu.be/KWugf8SfhxI Doesn't sound good, But doesn't sound bad either.

I was messing around with it, And out of nowhere, I get "1701" on the screen. Googled it, And it's a hard drive error code. I believe that the hd is fine. I wiggled the cables, And the HDD light turned on, And off when i moved slightly. Is it the cables? Picture:

Found a blue flipswitch box thing. Pictures in a few minutes. https://imgur.com/ez2Jjaz

I wiggled the cables a bit more, And i looked at the screen. It said "Error loading operating system"! I think the cables are broken. I didn't get a picture sadly. I have a picture now! https://imgur.com/dNv2fIW

Pictures of every interesting thing. https://imgur.com/a/YauD2

Edit 6: I've found an old computer with a ISA port, I'll try to get it to boot and recover data.

Ping spikes to the wifi router outside of my room

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 04:10 AM PDT

I am seeing 80 ms ping spikes to the wifi router outside of my room. The only obstruction between the wifi adapter and the router is the wall/door and its a short distance outside.

The wifi network is a 5 ghz one and usually shares the channels with 1-2 other networks. Unfortunately, my Netgear A6210 USB Wifi adapter cannot seem to detect the router's wifi network when it is set to channels in the 100+ range...I am not sure if this is due to the router or the wifi adapter. It simply cannot see the 5 ghz network if it is set to channels in the 100+ range, although Acrylic wifi can see the network just fine.

Does anyone know why I would be seeing 80 ms spikes to the router even with no major obstructions/distances involved?

Recovering Hard Drive after DELETE in Disk Management - drive unallocated - NO format yet

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 12:16 AM PDT

I DELETED my D drive under Disk Management (Win 10 Home Edition latest build) on accident. Do you have any idea how I can get it back? Disk Management shows it as "unallocated". Partition Wizard (A software I got because I thought this would fix it) finds my D drive and I could even look at the folder structure (as in showing me the root of D with all the exact folders) with an option I do not find anymore. Clicking on the drive and saying Recovery Wizard didn't bring my drive back or maybe I did something wrong. Note: I just deleted the drive which I can not use now. I didn't do a format yet. THANKS A MILLION!

Any other software suggestion or any solution would be very welcome.

    My PC freezes randomly

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 03:49 AM PDT

So I have my PC for about 2 years now, the last time I upgraded is was 1/2 year ago (new Graphics Card). Everything was fine the whole time I had this PC, even after installing Windows 10 from Windows 8.1, but now I have these random freezes. They sometimes occur shortly after startup, but usually after about 3 hours. I use the capslock button to see if it freezed again, or not, I obviously also try to tab out of what I am doing at that time and also try things like ctrl+alt+delete, but it is just a full up freeze. Then my reaction is to hold the power button for 4 seconds to restart my PC. I already tried several things like updating drivers, checking my memory via mdsched.exe, resetting virtual memory, checking my hard drive via Windows, running the system file check command, removing the CPU overclock, removing the GPU overclock.. I just don't know what it could be at this point anymore. (I can just barely remember, but I think these crashes are happening since the Windows update ybout 3 months ago, but I don't know for sure.)

    CPU: AMD FX-8320 GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060-6GB HDD: Seagate Desktop SSHD 1TB RAM: Corsair ValueSelect DDR3 1333 C9 2x4GB MBD: Asrock 970 Pro3 R2.0 OS: Windows 10

USB Type C hubs/docks on Android phones?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 03:45 AM PDT

Type C hubs are typically aimed at laptops with limited connectivity, but I want to see if I can branch my phones out to give them a bit more connectivity. (LG V20 and Nexus 6P) And I've seen it done in a couple of videos and posts, but not in depth. Has anyone experimented properly with it? Are there features to focus on? Do things like Ethernet and HDMI work reliably? So many questions and so little science done. If I had all the hubs I'd make that review video on a few different phones. Mail me the hubs? For science? ;P Yeah, fat chance. Had to try! Heh!

Firefox running up ridiculously high memory usage on YouTube.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 03:31 AM PDT

    https://i.imgur.com/OrV43cB.png

Task Manager shows 5 instances of Firefox being used, but it's really just 1 window and 1 tab. Anyway, when I'm on YouTube, the memory usage goes through the roof; and I'm only watching a single video at a time. At the same time, Firefox lags badly, having extremely delayed responses to keyboard and mouse commands.

I suspect this new issue may be related to the one I posted about yesterday https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/88vdl5/laptop_hard_drive_making_a_rubbing_noise_followed/

M2 SSD not working. Kingston 120GB, M2 SATA drive in M2 slot in MSI B350M Bazooka board

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 03:28 AM PDT

Bought a Kingston 120GB M2 Sata SSD and inserted it into the M2 slot in my MSI B350M Bazooka Board, screwed it up, booted up the pc and went into the BIOS it shows as 0,0GB in the System Status. I thought maybe it was unformatted but no matter what tool I use it shows up as a 2mb drive in Windows and can't be initialized etc....

Made a bootable windows USB Drive and it says 2mb too and can't create partition.

Is my SSD dead even though it's new or does my board not support it?

My SSD is M2 Sata, not sure about the M2 port in the msi b350m bazooka, is it PCI or SATA?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Windows 10 Microstutter every few seconds

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 03:28 AM PDT

Hello, I really hope somebody can help me!

Last Thursday, I first noticed my laptop started having small stutters every 3 seconds or so. It is very annoying but sound doesn't get affected, it's only the image that is. Since then I ran multiple different norton scans, a program that searches for malware, updated gpu drivers, hard disk drivers, processor drivers, ... Nothing helped.

I should point out that the task manager is acting very weird too, the stuttering is constant every 3 seconds but sometimes my hard drive is 100% active without anything running or my processor is jumping all over the place in activity, or both.

When I boot it up in safe mode there is no problem, the stuttering has gone, also my processor seems to act normally in safe mode.

Just before the problem started I had to download AutoCAD 2018 for school, I tried to delete this program but whenever I try to do that it takes around 6000 minutes to delete a 300MB file.

I am by no means a tech wizard and have run out of things I know. The solutions to seemingly similar problems on the internet haven't helped me either.

    Specifications:

Processor i3-4005u @ 1.7GHz RAM: 8GB GPU: intel HD graphics and a nvidia geforce 840M Hard drive: Toshiba MQ01ABD100

My mum's laptop is so slow.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 10:57 PM PDT

Any help trying to sort mum's laptop out? It's incredibly slow when starting up and trying to open apps/browsers etc. I have uninstalled some useless stuff and stopped certain apps opening from startup but it's still so slow. I'm worried about uninstalling stuff I shouldn't since I'm not too knowledgeable about computers.

Any advice to stop her laptop lagging as much? It's fairly old so I don't know if it can improve much more but any advice will help. Thanks. :)

Trouble switching between displays on a dual monitor setup

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 02:36 AM PDT

This only started last night and has been fine for a couple years prior.

I have DVI going into one monitor and HDMI into another, both are connected to the same GPU and both always work whether I choose to display on screen 1, 2 or duplicate. All of a sudden it would not switch over to my second display, and now the only way I can get my original display to come on is by unplugging the DVI completely from my GPU, and soon as I plug it back in my monitor turns off. I can now only get my main monitor to come on if the single HDMI is plugged in only.

Stop start menu searches from showing windows store apps?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 02:08 AM PDT

Hi. I recently installed OneNote 2016 on my windows 10 laptop after resetting windows. I used to open OneNote by going to the start menu by pressing the windows key and searching for "one". But now, instead of having OneNote 2016 as the first result, OneNote is shown as a "trusted microsoft store app". I only get the desired result, OneNote 2016 by typing that whole phrase.

How can I fix this? Ideally I'd like to never see results from the microsoft store in my search results.

I tried messing around with the Indexing Options, but had no luck. Additionally, when I search in Settings there's a "Cortana and Search settings" option. Choosing this only brings me to the "front" of the settings. I'm using Windows 10 version 1709 build 16299.309. I tried searching for solutions on the internet, but my google-fu is too weak :C

    I'd appreciate any help.

Audio disappeared after secondary GPU installation

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 02:02 AM PDT

Hi folks I've been dealing with this issue since evening and it's 11pm now and it's driving me crazy. Basically, I tried installing a secondary graphics card (both nvidia but not the same) it worked and all but starting from the first boot (after 2nd gpu recognition that took some time) with 2 gpus the sound is gone, nothing. I don't really know what happened, it was working just fine before.

What I've tried so far: -Reinstalled audio drivers, removed, replaced with newer ones (Realtek), tried mobo's manufacturer's version...etc no dice. -Disabled nvidia hd audio, did a fresh install of the nvidia drivers (3 times), removed nvidia hd audio, installed again, tried audio through HDMI (through GPU) to the TV and it worked. -Tried speakers/headphones with my smartphone and they worked just fine, no worries there. -When I crank the volume of my speakers (with an included knob) all the way up, I can hear sound from PC, for example music, it works but the sound is extremely quiet and distorted and comes only from the left satellite speaker. -Disabled all hidden Microsoft audio devices under Device Manager, disabled SPDIF and other unnecessary devices, disabled enhancements and effects, tried every audio quality (or format), removed EqualizerAPO along with Peace plugin... nope, nothing worked.

My setup: 4670k, 16GB RAM, GTX 1060 6GB, ASUS Gryphon Z87, Samsung monitor with no built-in speakers and using DVI to connect.

    I appreciate your time, thanks.

In search to simplify my tech life. An Ecosystem discussion.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 10:15 PM PDT

First off I would like to disclose, I've done TONS of research on this and I'm finally ready to step forward. Problem is I am stuck dead in the middle that's why I want to hear from real people with real experience instead of reviewers.

Also a couple more things: 1) This will probably rub people the wrong way, Yes I know this is going to sound like the ultimate waste of money. I work HARD and will utilize majority of what I'll be paying for. 2) Feel free to be as biased but I just wanna see your reasoning for. 3) I'm not even sure if this is the right sub to post it in, if you know of a more appropriate one please let me know. 4) My ultimate goal is to have my tech to be simple, seamless and compliment my busy 70+ hours work weeks. 5) Yes I know the best way to get the most of of tech is to utilize those who are the top of their craft.

Goal: To have the ultimate SEAMLESS Tech ecosystem.

Problem: after research and trials I can't seem to find the one ecosystem that will be "worth it" (though I know neither will be, as I stated this is all personal choice and its something I wanna do.)

    What I require:

A laptop for work/school. I've used both a chromebook and Macbook Air. One thing I won't be replacing is my home PC/Server/Workhorse/4kBrazzerSteaming PC with the 1950x Threadripper and 1080Ti that is the essential hub of everything I do whether it be school or work. Both Apple and Google fill every single thing I need.

Home Media. I've owned every single chromecast that's came out and I've used Apple TV a couple of times. I mainly stream a lot of Netflix, Crunchyroll and Youtube so either one will be fine.

Phone. I own both the iPhone 8 and the Essential Phone. iPhone 8 fills all my Social needs. The Essential phone is just a brick of beauty and speaks to the depths of my tech minimalist soul. Both do play nice with my home tech so this one I tend to lean more on the iPhone but It's iMessage is a small sacrifice compared to my endgame.

Fitness: Apple watch is dope and there are SO MANY OPTIONS for the Android Counterpart.

Tablet. I sometimes do a lot off work off my iPad pro, my coworker does use an android tab (Galaxy) and it seems like im indifferent with both.

Smart Assistant. Google Max or Homepod (I use everything on my Amazon Dot and its been such a good experience but it seems a little lacking at times.

Apps. Email/Calendar - At the moment I use Outlook/Calendar for pretty much all my scheduling and Email needs and both do play nice with either ecosystem. Wouldn't mind trying something new.

Music - Apple music is a little bland compared to Spotify but I could live with it. I've used Google Music when it first came out but I haven't used it in the past few years so I'm not sure how it is now.

Social Media - Instagram mostly. iOS is king still in my opinion.

Home Tech - I do use Nest, smart appliances, Philips Hue in every room and both ecosystems play nice with these.

    Apple.

Pros: The simplicity, social media king, streamline, refined approach to everything, and iMessage.

    Cons: Seems a little "restricted"

    Google.

Pros: Literally works with everything (integration), more robust features and faster release of new tech, I use GSuite for my business.

Cons: Sounds dumb but its a little "overwhelming", my entire social circle, family and co-workers are on iOS.

    Please help.
