Google In Hot Water: Over 3,300 Android Apps Are Found Tracking Kids Posted: 16 Apr 2018 05:20 AM PDT We know that privacy is a myth, but it is becoming dangerous for kids now. According to a recent survey, 73% of Android apps, designed for Families program, transmit sensitive data over the internet. The collection of data by any such app doesn't necessarily mean that the app is violating Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), but none of these apps has obtained required consent from parents that could be verified. What is even more surprising is the fact that approximately 400 apps were found recording either device information or geo location data or email address of device owners or phone numbers. But that was not all; over 3,300 apps were caught violating one or some other policy made to avoid apps tracking children. 1,100 apps shared persistent identifier, which is widely used as a behaviour advertising technique. It allows app publishers to know what kids like or dislike and to push ads accordingly. [link] [comments] |
[DEV] TomatoTimer - Pomodoro technique productivity timer Posted: 16 Apr 2018 07:46 AM PDT Hello. I just released the app that is called TomatoTimer. It helps you improve productivity with Pomodoro technique. For those not familiar with Pomodoro technique: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomodoro_Technique This technique really helps you improve productivity and fight procrastination. The main reason why I created this app is that there are no timer apps on the play market that let you fully control timer through notifications. Links:
The app is open-source so you can modify or use it however you want: https://github.com/artem122ya/TomatoTimer-Android Check it out and let me know what you think. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Apr 2018 03:19 AM PDT Hey, I've been running a rooted Android for a while now because I like being able to block unwanted advertising, and remove unessential apps from my phone. I've been trying to find a reliable way to remove sponsored content from my Instagram and Facebook feeds, but I can't seem to find anything. It's really frustrating. Also, I've tried the whole "just report all the ads as offensive" thing that a lot of websites suggested in 2017. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |

[Question] [Request] Looking for a good Balderdash/Fictionary game app (w/o needing paper & pen) Posted: 16 Apr 2018 08:08 AM PDT I have been searching the last few days for a good Dictionary game (also more commonly known as Balderdash or Fictionary.. also "bluff wars"/"psych") app that lets each person submit their answers in the game (pass and play style on one device), but have not found anything. The versions I have found still need paper and pencils, or are over wifi or whatever. Does anyone here know of one that is all on one device without needing anything else? Something without crazy permissions would also be ideal [link] [comments] |

[DEV] Lynx - Regain your Privacy Posted: 16 Apr 2018 08:31 AM PDT Lynx is an instant messaging app that grants you absolute control over your content. Share - a word that became the symbol of the recent media revolution, is also the worst enemy of our privacy. Once we share a media item in any of the current messaging platforms, we instantly lose control over it. Lynx has combined all the relevant tools in order to grant us easy and peaceful communication while having full control over our contents. Lynx features:

[DEV]Release eyes and listen to news easily Posted: 15 Apr 2018 11:49 PM PDT This latest App News Player-USA reads USA news for you when you are busy in driving, cooking, exercising or any state your hands or eyes are occupied. Better than the news radio (unable to control), you can listen to news on demand. By operating with simple and intuitive GUI or wired/Bluetooth controlled headphone, you can switch news to play easily as listening to music. A special feature worth to mention is you can define the pronunciation of heteronyms (or vulgar language), such like change the "iPhone-X" to "iPhone-Ten", and the news can be played more naturally which helps your understanding. This App is also very helpful to the elders and visual impaired persons. Want to read news without always using eyes ? Yes, you can do it from now on to protect your eyes. Just try it in Google Play: NewsPlayer-USA [link] [comments] |

Posted: 16 Apr 2018 11:45 AM PDT Hi everyone 👋 Less than a month ago I challenged myself to build and launch an app in one week and I developed Hummi.nz, an app that allows you to record yourself while humming a song and test the other users to see if they guess the songs. I week after I launched, I posted about it on HN and I was amazed to have created a useful discussion around it. The post even reached #1 in the show section and #9 on the main page. Later on, I also launched on Product Hunt and managed to get featured for most of the day on the main page accumulating almost 80 upvotes. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16692899 This leads me to believe that the concept of the app is good, but I'm really trying to execute it right at the moment. If anyone has the chance to try it out, I would be grateful if you share your feedback here. 🙏 I'll be here to reply to everyone so feel free to ask or share anything. Cheers! 🍺 The official website of the app is http://hummi.nz [link] [comments] |

Posted: 16 Apr 2018 09:46 AM PDT I've recently tried Sunshine, and while it's perfect in almost every way for my needs, its folder management is really bad which is a huge flaw. I'm just looking for a simple app to stream a bunch of videos I have on my PC over the local network -- nothing else. I don't need organising, TV support, mobile sync, casting, or any of those fancy stuff that complete media server solutions like Plex and Emby offer. I would've tried Plex but I believe there's a time limitation for streaming unless you make a one-time purchase. As for Emby, I found that the mobile app was too slow as it had a lot of features I didn't need and it took double the number of clicks to play my content (first you click on the thumbnail and then the play button). I know the simplest solution would be to just set up a smb or ftp server on the PC and then access the files using a file explorer on Android. But the problem with this is that none of the file explorers I've tried show file thumbnails for network locations (I've tried Solid, ES, MiX, and FX). So what options do I currently have? Work and Private Life on the same phone Posted: 16 Apr 2018 12:39 AM PDT Hello, I'm allowed to use my business contract on my private phone, which means that I can cancel my private contract with T-Mobile to save money. Now I'd like to know, how I can best separate my work and business stuff (apps, contacts) from my private apps and files on my Android phone. Are there apps and ways to achieve this? So far, I created a work folder containing my business apps like SharePoint, Outlook etc. I thought about tweaking notification of business apps in this folder so that these only pop up between 9am 6pm and don't disturb me during my private time after I left work. What else can I do? I appreciate your input! [link] [comments] |
