Best current gen gaming CPU + MB for under $300?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 11:11 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I recently bought some DDR4 2400 ram and an Nvidia 1060. I was waiting for the Ryzen 2 release to weigh my options for a CPU/MB.

Now that everything's out, what would you recommend for around $300? I'm open to both Intel and AMD.

I'll be gaming at 1080p and care most about that instead of video production/editing.

    Thanks so much!

My experience with using one CPU and one GPU for two gamers for almost an year and why I recommend it

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 03:15 PM PDT

So I'll start out by saying that I'm not exactly rich, so I try to be as efficient with the money I spend as possible. With that in mind, wanting to play games with my girlfriend, buying two computers would get very expensive. So, after some research, I found a cool program called "Aster" by a company called Ibik and it fit my needs perfectly. Disclaimer: You can use it for free, keep reading.

Right now I'm running this: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor €237.90
    Motherboard Gigabyte - GA-AB350M-Gaming 3 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard €102.90
    Memory G.Skill - Trident Z 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory $189.89 @ OutletPC
    Storage Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive €99.90
Storage Western Digital - Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive €53.90
Video Card Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1060 3GB 3GB Windforce OC Video Card $259.89 @ OutletPC
Case NZXT - S340 (Black/Red) ATX Mid Tower Case €69.90
    Power Supply SeaSonic - G 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply €109.90
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total €1050(aprox, summer of 2017)

    My two monitors are 1920x1080 144hz and 1680x1050 60hz

With Aster, it runs as if they were two separate computers, with their own set of keyboard, mouse and monitor and shared speakers, although you can configure this. So far everyone that I've shown this to asked me where the second computer was, because you really can't tell the difference. It plays League of Legends (max settings) on two stations and only uses about 40% of the computer's resources. I do need to use Sandboxie, but it doesn't affect performance as far as I can tell.

If I haven't convinced you yet, let me tell you why this is so much cheaper:

    You only need one SSD and you only need to install most games once. That's half the price in storage for the same experience;

    You only need to buy one motherboard, one case and one PSU;

    If you are only using one of the stations, you get all of the computer's resources, but if you had two separate computers you'd only be able to use half of your total resources;

    You save physical space;

If you're cheap like me, it's FREE without needing to pirate it. You can just keep renovating the free trial every 30 days, which takes about a minute.

I'm not sponsored by this company or anything, I'm just doing this because I love their product and doing maths, it makes building a PC for a household a lot cheaper.

If you curious about my experience, I'll tell you a bit about how it works. The rest you can google or find in their website:

Each terminal uses a different windows account. They both have access to all computer storage(SSD, HDD and plugged in USB drives) although I'm pretty sure this can be changed. There is no resource distribution. One station can use 90% of the CPU while the other uses 10%. The distribution would be as if everything was running within one session. You can't end processes in the other session, although you can see how much RAM, etc the computer is using on the task manager.

Feel free to ask any questions about this. I think this is a technology with serious potential, tell me what you think.

What 'Noob' Mistake Do You Still make ?

Ive been building my own computers for 20 years now and I still make the same mistake every build ... I always forget to plug in my sata cables before i install the gpu. Not a major issue just kick myself every time.

Was wondering what simple mistakes other people still make when putting together their computers

Best priced GPU for Workstation? (No Gaming Whatsoever)

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 11:58 AM PDT

Hi! I'm building a workstation for programming and general work use (Visual Studio, IntelliJ, Android Studio, Adobe Photoshop and InDesign), and plan on having two QHD screens. I don't game at all, not even Solitaire.

What's the best GPU that I can get for my requirements that is unaffected by the mining craze? I just want to drive two 1440p screens. Can I get by with the built-in GPU that is on an Intel CPU?

Need help setting up my Eyefinity / 3-monitor setup.

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 09:56 AM PDT

    Hi there,

I am a bit new to this - please bare with me.

I have a desktop PC with a R9 280x graphics card. I got a new 22" Dell monitor recently for a 3-monitor setup, but one monitor is not detecting. I've pretty much concluded it has to do with the Eyefinity setup.

    I have:

    • 1ea 22" Dell monitor
    • 1ea 23" Dell monitor
    • 1ea 22" Samsung monitor

Both 22" are older and have no HDMI inputs.

    For cables:

    • 1ea DVI female to HDMI male cable
    • 1ea DVI female to DVI male cable
    • 1ea DVI female to DVI male cable, with a passive DP adapter.

I'm trying to make heads or tails of this Dell post here about how to setup Eyefinity, but I don't know if the examples are suitable for my setup.

    http://www.dell.com/support/article/ca/en/cabsdt1/sln130078/how-to-configure-multiple-monitors-using-an-amd-eyefinity-graphics-adapter?lang=en

It seems like I need an active adapter rather than a passive one? I'm not a huge fan of collecting a whole bunch of useless dongles for my monitors. The newer Dell 23" has a DisplayPort connection I can take advantage of, but the GFX card only has mini DP ports.

So the question is, what should I buy to get an Eyefinity setup, or do I have one already?

Got some old PC's to be used for BASIC computing - is a HORRIBLE GPU better than integrated graphics?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 11:56 AM PDT

So Ive got some old PC's that Id like to install either windows or linux on, so they can be used for basic web browsing, document editing, etc.

I also have some old GPU's from a LONG time ago - that at least offer some other inputs.

Is it worth it to install some of these? Could it result is WORSE performance? (An extreme example would be to install a GT710 on a new ryzen GPU with integrated graphics - would I get worse performance?)

    The computers in question are:

    • CPU - E5500
    • CPU - E7500

Both are pretty underpowered - so im just wondering:

    1. Should I bother with integrated graphics? (if they are an improvement - is it noticeable?)
    2. If I just need more ports (hdmi) - would it be worth it?
    3. Is it possible the performance would be worse than the integrated graphics?

The old cards I have are:

    Radeon HD 4350 - (almost 10 years old now) Radeon HD 6350 - (newer - but also terrible - has a DMS-59 port - NO HDMI/VGA/Displayport_) GT 710

    What do you guys think?

Find the right case....or...the right drive? IDK I'm assuming its a simple solution but I can't figure out. I also cant find either easily on parts picker...so. Yea its a dumb question.

Coil whine / buzzing noise through speakers. AsRock Extreme4 8700k

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 11:56 AM PDT

I just did my first build 2 days ago and everything went well. I'm using the AsRock Z370 Extreme, 8700k, GTX 1080 and EVGA G2 650w (from previous computer).

I'm getting an annoying high pitched noise coming through my speakers (whichever panel they are connected to). Very similar to this:

I've updated the drivers and for everything I can find. I removed my HDD & Graphics card to see if they are the cause. Disabling on board sound in the bios makes no difference, although disabling C-state did reduce the problem??

Using a stereo to USB connection solves the speaker issue, as does using headphones. However there is still a faint electrical buzzing noise that be made out when the room is quiet.

The first board I got from Amazon had damaged CPU pins. Should I be looking to return this one too or is there a work around?

    thanks.

Is it worth it to build a PC in Uni?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 02:29 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I am asking this question because I have always been attacted to the allure of DIY PCs. I'm currently in 2nd year of my 5 year program with co-op. I live off campus away from my home and I will likely regularly travel for co-op (4 month intervals mostly) Money is not much of a problem, but most of my co-op money is going towards tuition and the rest I plan to invest/keep for myself. I have a fairly busy school schedule with some hardass courses. Multiplayer gaming/esports is out of the question, but I do enjoy long singleplayer adventures. I also do some game programming on the side and would like to use the pc for productivity. Would it be worth it to buy/build a PC soon even if I will not always have the opportunity to use it? My laptop right now is okay, but I would prefer a better experience.

    Thank you for your time.

Tl;dr - in uni, good money, low time + moving around, should I get PC?

Built my first PC! Now to monitor components and overclock!

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 11:15 AM PDT

Ok, so I'm new to PC gaming and just built my first desktop ever. It's Ryzen 5 1600, MSI B350m Mortar, 8gb Corsair Vengeance LPX, EVGA GTX 1060 6gb. I've been doing some research on overclocking and monitoring cpu, Ram, and GPU usage, temps etc. but I'm a bit confused and there's a lot of old info to sift through so I thought I'd ask the nice people here!

Basically, what are the best programs used to monitor usage, temps, etc. and how to test stability for modest overclocks? Thank you !

Buying used vs building your own?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 01:05 PM PDT

Hi all! I've been thinking about building my own PC for a while now, but I recently found a used rig on CL that seems like a good deal for the price. Here are the specs, being sold for $480:

-Windows 10 Pro 64 bit, licensed and fully updated

-Intel Core i7 Haswell 4790K clocked at 4 ghz (this one running with mild oc at 4.5ghz)

-EVGA Geforce GTX 970 with 4gb ram

    -8gb DDR3 @1066mhz

    -Asus Z97-K motherboard (socket 1150)

    -BD Blueray writer/reader

-1tb western digital wd10ezex hard drive

-Wireless AC internet adapter (does 5.8 and 2.4 ghz at blazing speeds)

-White case with large window and Corsair 750 watt power supply (CX 750)

Is it unwise to buy a used PC in general rather than building your own? I was told that the parts could be overclocked to the point of self-mutilation. I'll be using it mostly for semi-casual gaming, making music, and creating videos. Any advice would be great since I'm going into this purchase with no prior knowledge. Thanks!

Help Sorting out if my build needs a new psu / wattage

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 09:33 AM PDT

I've been struggling with various issues on my system recently such as input/mouse hitching and feel like I've narrowed it down some as to what could be causing the issue.

I have a long list of tests I've run here (apologies for linking to another thread, but you'll see that including that information here in its entirety wouldn't have made a lot of sense): Hitching issues in Windows 10

I mainly use the pc for 3d Modeling/ZBrush, Twitch streaming, and gaming/VR

The main way that I'm able to reproduce the problem is by putting the pc to sleep and then waking. it's Immediately noticeable across the entire system. In VR, in games, just idling on the desktop and rotating my cursor.

So I think its either my PSU (which is 7 years old now), or something with Windows 10 creators update (though I no longer have windows.old so I can't easily test this), or possibly too much draw from the wall as I currently live in an older house.

I'm not entirely positive this is the issue, but if I were to pick up a new PSU, what would be your recommendation and what watt capacity to ensure enough overhead for overlock etc?

    Thanks in advance all!

[Update] Two gamers one GPU, answer to some questions, including how to run battle.net games

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 03:01 PM PDT

The post I made yesterday blew up, thanks for all the feedback guys!

First, I bought the program. I was planning on doing it later, but I guess the developers deserve it, so I'll be eating rice for the next two weeks. I didn't want to post a link to not make it look much like an advertisement, but apparently I should have, so here it is: http://ibik.ru

If you didn't read my other thread, it turns your computer into multiple workstations, so you can have multiple people using the same tower.

Second, I want to apologize. The program isn't 100% functional on all games. I didn't know this and got lucky, since all the games I had tried until I made the last post worked. Here is a list of games I've tested and worked:

League of Legends(One client on Sandboxie) Left 4 Dead 2(One steam client on Sandboxie, I recommend copying your Steam folder and running the Sandbox on the copy, because steam can start randomly updating on both at the same time and it messes things up. Look up tutorials on google, there are plenty.) Hearthstone(No Sandboxie. Just go to battle.net settings and on general tick "Allow several instances of Battle.net" or something like that. After that, start both games on both terminals at the same time.) BattleBlock Theater Divinity: Original Sin 2 RuneScape

Games I suspect work, based on the ones I tested:

    All battle.net games

    All Valve games

Most non-steam games without an anticheat

Games I couldn't get to work:

BattleEye games(tested on Unturned, couldn't get BattleEye to work on Sandboxie)

If you want me to notify you if someone finds a BattleEye workaround, just leave a comment here and I'll do that.

Third, some people asked me for pics of the rig and the program itself.

    Here is the rig: https://i.imgur.com/Q1uvmBL.jpg

    The program: https://i.imgur.com/Cz8X8eq.png

Thanks for all the feedback, feel free to make new questions.

Is soundcard and audio interface the same? thanks also any recommendations Is highly appreciated.

    i7 7700k undervolted vs i5 8600

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 02:43 PM PDT

Alright help me out here. I'm going to be building in a sff case where my cpu cooler clearance is 50mm max. I'm going with the cryorig c7 so I'll be limited by temperatures. The 8600 has a tdp of 65w which is attractive to me but I currently have a z270 itx motherboard and a 7700k and would like to reuse them if possible.

So I have questions regarding clock speeds. The 8600 has a turbo clock of 4.1ghz. If I undervolt/underclock my 7700k to 4.1ghz will this emulate the same thing ? Will the temperatures be similar?

    Update or upgrade?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 02:01 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

Currently have a MSI GL62 6QD laptop and I'm wondering if its worth updating with new hardware, or if I should simply start looking and saving for a new one. I should add that I practically use the laptop as a desktop, so if I choose to upgrade I'll be buying a desktop.

The pc should serve as a gaming/workstation. I mostly play Overwatch, but I would like the option to be able to play different and relatively new games as well. I also use it for my work, for which i do a lot of data analyses; mostly using Excell and R-studio.

    Current specs:

Display: 15,6" full HD CPU: Intel core i5-6300HQ RAM: 8 GB, 3ddr HD: 1TB HDD GPU: NVIDEA GeForce GTX 950M - 2GB

I was thinking about buying a SSD and 16gb RAM
