    Simple Questions - March 03, 2018

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 04:12 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Yet Another All White Build... With RGB!

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 11:52 AM PST

This is my new build dedicated for gaming and VR. All the parts can be found here I had a lot of fun building it! I really took my time in the planning and construction to make it look nice and run well. I'm very proud of how it turned out.

It has an EVGA 1070 in there now (it was in my old build), but that will be changed out once something affordable shows up. Damn Crypto-Currency. I hope to get a 1080ti in there or maybe when the new series comes out I will use them. Other then that, she's done!

    Thanks for taking a look!

Buying SSD to boost start up speed?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 03:03 AM PST

Hi guys. I want to get an SSD to boost my start up speed. Right now(I measured this start) it took 2:32(to start system and Chrome, 1:34 to start to desktop). Obviously SSD will make boot up faster, but will it go down below 20 sec? I think it might be a problem with my PC after all. My laptop, Lenovo Yoga 2 13(without SSD, just 500GB HDD) starts in 20 sec no problem. Also my PC is unresponsive after gaming(even lighter titles like World of Tanks, after closing game it'll take 30 sec to start chrome for example). Maybe I should invest my 60$ into something else? Below is my actual specification. Everything beside monitor, mobo and PSU are my actual parts. Mobo is P61-S3(http://uk.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-P61-S3-rev-20#sp), monitor is Samsung T200HD(irrelevant) and PSU is some no name 400W with 65% efficiency EDIT: I forgot to mention, system is installed on Samsung 320GB drive **What is your parts list? Overclocked Dream ITX Build Complete!

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 12:57 PM PST

    i7-8700k @ 4.8 Ghz (-3AVX) GTX 1070 @ 1.8 Ghz

    Album Here: https://imgur.com/a/w1TWO

This build was a real challenge! My last build was a Sandy Bridge ATX build so this required some patience! Keeping that toasty overclocked i7 was a big deal too.

Overall the build was a blast, everything fit well (Even the Hyper 212 Evo HSF AND full size corsair PSU). Temps are great after tweaking voltages. You can see in the top view that I even squeezed a slim 140x15mm Prolimatech Vortex fan which helped a little as well. GTX 1070 was purchased pre-mining craze.

Build is for gaming foremost, with real time numerical method software development/CUDA on the side.

    Ryzen 2400G for eSports games?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 03:17 AM PST

A friend of mine needs to build a PC, because his laptop died. He said that he only wants to play games like TF2, CSGO, R6S etc. As the GPU prices are very high currently, I think that would be the best solution for now. After all, he can upgrade to a good GPU later.

Is any of this salvageable for gaming?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 12:16 PM PST

My son just turned 13 and all his close buddies are moving from XBox gaming to PC gaming.

I have an old computer (about 6 years old, maybe?) that I just don't use any longer since all my work from home is being done on my work laptop. So if we can save any money, I'd like to use anything from that one if possible. We've been checking Craigslist and others daily, but that is really a unicorn hunt, unless I know exactly what I'm looking for.

The games that they're currently into are Fortnite, PUBG, CS Go and maybe Overwatch.

He's been been saving his allowance and has been coaching chess at the elementary school and saving his earnings from that. He currently has a budget of about $350. It's important to both of us that he is the one doing the build, etc. and I think it will be a great experience for him.

So...can I use any of these components? I didn't crack open the case (I'm using it now do try to pull the info from it), so this is the best I can do: (Don't laugh, it was pretty dope back when I built it)

CPU: Intel Core i3 Motherboard: ASUSTek (model number not available) Memory: 2x2GB (model number not available) Hard Drive: Some WD 500GB that was pretty good back then Video Card: AMD Radeon HD5450 Case: Old HP Pavilion a1510n Power Supply: Unknown, but probably not usable

Not worried about the monitor, keyboard or mouse right now, he can keep saving for an upgrade, and I imagine that the cooling is just whatever fan came with the rig in the first place, so probably need an upgrade for that as well.

Thanks in advance, I appreciate any and all feedback.

Cleaned dust off CPU and GPU, now Windows 10 boots to a black screen with a loading cursor?!?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 12:15 PM PST

Title, basically. Used compressed air and a small paintbrush for the CPU heatsink, and paper towel for the GPU PCB I think? Just the bottom part on the other side of the fan.

Could this have damaged anything to cause this? Maybe the GPU got damaged? Please help, I've got no clue lol.

Tried a new GPU (750Ti and I still get the issue)

EDIT: Disabled Compatibility Support Module, and it booted! Yay :) Will reboot and see if it continues to work.

Using a 1080p Monitor as my main while having 4k as my secondary?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 03:03 AM PST

So my pc can't run games at 4k at a decent Fram rate without dropping all the way to low settings. I initially got the 4k monitor because it was a great deal and I thought It would look good with my PS4 pro and Xbox One X. While it does work well for the systems, my pc is suffering from trying to run 4k games. So I was wondering if using a 1080p 144hz monitor as my monitor 1 and my 4k as my monitor 2 would work? Would there any problems that I would run into (resolution wise, programs glitching or freaking out etc?)

Am I able to run 1080p at 144hz?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 01:03 PM PST

I'm looking at purchasing a new monitor in the near future and I'm trying to figure out if I'll be able to run most/all games at maxed out settings at 144hz. So far, I've had no trouble but I'd hope I wouldn't have screen tearing problems (I've seen around the subreddit that this can be an issue without g-sync/freesync?). I'd just like to figure it out before I actually drop the money on one and then return it or whatnot. Thanks!

Is GTX 1060 6GB going to be viable for AAA titles in 2020?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 02:12 PM PST

Just as in the title, is it viable even now tho? I might get an 1060 instead of 1070, because of the mining craze.

ASUS AURA "cant open asio.sys (2)" error on brand new windows 10 build.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 10:18 AM PST

(hope this is an appropriate place to post my problem)

I am trying to sync my corsair vegeance ddr4 2666mhz to my ASUS x99-e motherboard without any luck. I just recently purchased two new hard drives and a new copy of windows 10 home. On my previous build with windows 7 I had no problem using AURA sync to adjust my corsair vengeance RGB lights, but now when I try to download AURA it gives me an error "cant open asio.sys (2)". It will continue to download and as soon as i open the program, it instantly crashes and says "AURA has stopped working".

I've contacted asus support many times, and they seem to just copy and paste a basic list of instructions every time, instructions I have already followed many times with no success. They just end up telling me to do a fresh OS reinstall on my brand new PC, which is a little ridiculous to me.

This is pretty frustrating considering this is a brand new build and I am completely lost. I would greatly appreciate any insight you are willing to give me.. because like the rest of the world... I'm addicted to RGB! Thank you very much, i hope you have a great day.

What if we just have to accept the current market for computer components, instead of waiting for prices to drop?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 11:00 PM PST

What if this is just how it's going to be from now on? For clarity, by "current market" I am referring to the increased price of RAM and GPUs compared to earlier in 2017.

6 year old build upgrade questions

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 10:48 AM PST

So this is my current build from early 2012. It's done me well, but it's starting to feel like its falling off the mark. I'm also starting to get the occasional problem, SSD not being detected on boot, one GPU fan not spinning up, onboard graphics not working, so I'm looking at whether it's worth upgrading or if I should bite the bullet and go for a new build.

    Type Item Price
    CPU Intel - Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor -
    Motherboard ASRock - Z77 Extreme4 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard -
    Memory Corsair - Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory -
    Storage Crucial - M4 128GB 2.5" Solid State Drive -
Storage Western Digital - Caviar Green 1TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive -
Video Card Sapphire - Radeon HD 7870 2GB Video Card -
Case Zalman - Z11 ATX Mid Tower Case -
Power Supply Corsair - Enthusiast 650W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply -
    Optical Drive LG - GH24NSC0B DVD/CD Writer -
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total -

It's predominantly used as my work station, streaming, excessive browsing (I'm a 00's of tabs person) and used for occasional gaming, Rust, CS:GO, LoL, DayZ, Civ.

I don't have a budget set, because as mentioned, I'm not sure if I should be looking for a complete new build or specific upgrades.

But in terms of upgrades I've been looking at the Corsair Air 540 case for increased air-flow, ease of access for cleaning and its size. One of the Corsair Hydro series coolers. A new, and larger, SSD. Another 2 x 4GB Vengeance 1600.

I have a feeling my GPU may be on its last legs so this plays a big part in the upgrade/new build.

Build tool request: electric screwdriver w/ clutch.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 10:33 AM PST

Does anyone that build PCs and other similar small electronics have an electric screwdriver they prefer? My hands don't work like they used to and a lot of tiny screws get annoying.

I found a cheap one that ran on AA batteries but it's incredibly slow and has no torque control.

One I one on Amazon has this question: I build computers and electronic devices. Do the torque settings go low enough to secure delicate components without damaging them? and a lot of people answered that it worked great for them.

Does anyone have one they use?

Build Upgrade: Gaming PC Built in 2014

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 12:21 PM PST

I built my first and only PC as a gaming and media streamer in 2014. It was great at first and continues to perform okay but it has started to show its age and I am now using it on a 70" 4k screen. I do not really know a lot about PC components or how they interact so I was hoping for some expert advice from those that do. I am looking to increase the graphics performance to be able to run higher settings in things like PUGB, Skyrim, ect.

The current components are as follows:

    MOBO:ASUS MAXIMUS VI HERO DDR3 2800 LGA 1150 Motherboard socket for 4th Generation Intel Core i7/ i5/ i3/ Pentium / Celeron Processors

    CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K Quad-Core Desktop Processor 3.4 GHZ 6 MB Cache - BX80646I54670K

    GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti Superclocked w/ACX Cooler 3GB GDDR5 384bit Dual-Link DVI-I DVI-D HDMI DP SLI Graphics Cards 03G-P4-2884-KR

    Ram: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory (CML8GX3M2A1600C9)

Memory: Samsung Electronics 840 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Single Unit Version Internal Solid State Drive MZ-7TE250BW

Seagate Barracuda 2 TB HDD SATA 6 Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST2000DM001

PSU:Corsair Professional Series 860 Watt Digital ATX/EPS Modular 80 PLUS Platinum Power Supply AX860i - This seems to be having a few issues. It likes to go into a restart loop where I have to unplug everything and then plug it all back in for it to continue to work.

Cooling: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120mm PWM Fan

Case:Fractal Design Define R4 Cases, Black Pearl (FD-CA-DEF-R4-BL)

As I said, I don't know much about PC's so if any more information is needed please just let me know! Thanks again for any suggestions. I am on bedrest for the next few months so a functioning PC will make it go faster!

    Upgrade a gift

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 02:43 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

I am receiving a fairly new computer from a friend as a gift. Here is what he sent me as the performance specs. It is a desktop, and this is the only information I have about it.

    https://imgur.com/a/jfkWQ

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Primarily running X Plane 11 and some light video editing

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Moderate settings, but certainly good enough to run the game smoothly.

    http://www.x-plane.com/kb/x-plane-11-system-requirements/

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Replace this text with your answer.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    'Merica

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

I'm considering getting a new graphics card and processor because the stats say that it is supported, but I don't know what the power source is or if it is changeable. I'm thinking of just going with whatever the recommended hardware is, but am not sure of what else might need to be done. I don't need the best, but I want to know what I'm getting into beforehand.

Stupidly touched an LGA socket. Luckily it worked. Just posting this to ask about how screwed I am.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 02:34 PM PST

This was my second build, so the mistake is pretty stupid to make. Anyway, I'm typing on the computer I touched the motherboard socket of and it works fine. I get stable framerates in games, everything works as it should. Despite all being well, I'm still worried.

Without thinking things through, I popped the lid off the socket. I forgot how to release the latch and lightly touched the unprotected socket's left corner. Since this was the only Coffee Lake compatible motherboard I had, I couldn't really get a new motherboard unless I wanted to wait 2 weeks for a new one.

I looked at all the pins with a magnifying glass and nothing looked out of place. Everything looked exactly as it should, in fact. No discoloration, no bent pins, not even a pin running off and yelling for help. I turned on Deadly Premonition's Whistle song to calm myself down and put the CPU in. Built the PC, lugged it to my desk, plugged it all in and everything worked fine.

It's been a week and everything works fine. Only problems I had involved a fan that was 4 years old no longer working and a wifi problem that was fixed by using the driver CD. This rig is humming like a healthy computer as I type this.

TLDR; I touched an LGA socket. Everything worked fine and nothing went awry. Despite all being well, I'm still worried that this mistake will cause problems later on.

I already replaced the fans in case anyone was wondering. That broken fan was thrown out.

Meshify C case: Front panel USBs get stuck/difficult to remove.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 12:19 PM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

Not too sure if "troubleshooting" is the correct category for this question since it isn't exactly a problem with the build itself.

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

    Meshify C case.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Is it just me or are the front panel USB ports difficult to remove USB plugs from. I have tried both front panel ports, with different USB plugs/drives. The Apple charging cord plug seemed to get locked in the worse (I had to follow a YouTube guide and wedge a piece of plastic between the plug and the port to try to disengage the port from hooking onto the plug), whereas everything else was "just" difficult to remove. I'm really hesitant to use the front panel USB ports if it means basically yanking out the USB plug from the port every time as I'm afraid it'll break something.

Is this a common issue with this case? I tried searching Reddit/Google but wasn't able to find anything about it.

Thank you in advanced for any help.

PC opens and then restarts shortly after after cleaning

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 02:31 PM PST

I noticed my PC was running games a bit slower, so I figured I'm gonna clean it because it was frankly long overdue and I knew it was probably dusty. Didnt have compressed air so I just gently wiped some dust off from the fans and blew in it a bit. After that, I plug it back in and push the power button. It boots up shortly, doesnt connect to the monitor, and then closes and restarts. I didnt really touch anything while cleaning the thing so Im not sure whats going on. Any help?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 02:25 PM PST

    I have a 750 Ti... I'm not sure what my power supply is... it is a stock one I got this my computer. What it says on it is Part Number:633187-002 AC input 100-240 V~50-60Hz 8A DC output +3.3v ---------14.0A +5.08v ------15.0A +12Va----------15.0A +12Vb----------18.0A +12Vc--------10.0A -12v--------0.3A +5.08Vsb-------2.0A Total 460W

    Model PCA246

I'm not too sure about my other stuff Has one TB hardrive I'm not 2 sure about Ram but i think its 2GB

Pretty much what is happening is when I turn it on, it seems to make an odd sound, it'll stay on for anywhere between 5 seconds to about an hour then It'll just power down. When it's only lasting about 5 seconds it's when I immediately try and power it up. However, if I leave it off for a couple of hours/days itll last longer

If you need more info just post a comment and ill try and find it out for you... Anyway, I can Find out whats wrong? or what i need to replace. Thanks for your time people...

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Friend travels quite a bit and needs a rig that can fit inside his backpack. Is this a good build that has a potential to be up-gradable in the future? (e.g. install a discrete graphics card) Any parts that are better and cheaper?

What GPU would compliment an i5-8600k?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 02:17 PM PST

I'm building a new PC from the ground up with a combination of new parts my wife and family gave me for Christmas. Among the parts was this processor, but a new GPU was just outside of everyone's budget.

Now, with a big fat tax return on the way, I'm ready to upgrade from my dusty old GTX 580 3gb. What GPU would go well with my processor without seeing any kind of bottlenecking?

Apologies if this seems like a stupid question. This is my first actual build and I'm used to working with/upgrading 10 year old hardware. Thanks!
