[REVIEW] My experience with 13in HP Spectre x360 (early 2018) Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:57 PM PDT Hi r/SuggestALaptop, Wanted to make this quick post because this subreddit has been a great source of (non-sponsored/corporate) information for me - shoutout to /u/shopineer - as I researched available products. I ordered a 13 inch HP Spectre x360 with 8th gen i7 cpu, 16gb ram, and 512gb SSD directly from the HP website a few weeks ago. I read lots of complaints (here and elsewhere) about fan noise, overheating, and coil whine from late summer 2017 to early winter 2018, and I chatted with an HP rep (support chat feature on their website). Rep told me this is a problem that's been reported and solved, so I wanted to order directly from the manufacturer instead of buy from somewhere that may be carrying old stock to try to avoid the overheating/noise problem. It took ~2 weeks from order placement to when the status on their website said "shipped," so I assume they were "making it fresh." After getting the machine and plugging in, powering on, and accepting agreements while listening to Cortana (before any option to disable), I got to the desktop and wanted to start uninstalling the infamous HP bloatware (of which there was lots). I opened Windows 10 settings and got an important email on my desktop (built in 2012, old fans that are pretty noisy and in need of replacement, typing on it right now) and left the laptop alone. After ~5 minutes I heard the fans on the laptop start roaring much louder than my desktop. I wasn't touching the machine, and it was left doing nothing (no updates/uninstallations), and the fans were significantly louder than my old 2012 desktop tower fans. The spectre was also very hot to the touch. I immediately packed it up and processed a refund. I feel I'm oversharing and many may not care to read this far, but I just wanted to potentially reach someone on the fence about purchasing the HP Spectre x360 13 inch in early 2018 (end of March 2018 as I type) and share my experience: The problems you likely read about starting in late summer 2017 haven't gone away. I convinced myself/hoped they were addressed by now because of some positive (I believe sponsored) reviews I read dated Dec 2017/early 2018, but the machine I custom ordered in March 2018 from HP themselves that they took time to construct on demand still had glaring problems fresh out the box. I will say that HP processed the refund in full immediately and without issue (including the 3 year extended warranty + accident protection that I had paid close to $300 for). Good luck on your shopping, everyone! submitted by /u/aisam_al_aviv [link] [comments] |
Which laptop ranks highly in terms of build quality and reliability? Posted: 30 Mar 2018 11:58 PM PDT It seems like every laptop I look into has some fault such as overheating or poor, cheap feeling keyboards. These issues don't seem to disappear with price either seeing as there is no shortage of XPS 15 horror stories. submitted by /u/christmasinjune201 [link] [comments] |
Cheap replacement Posted: 31 Mar 2018 02:54 AM PDT Hi all I need some help. I started learning Gamemaker studio recently and want to continue however the laptop I've been using didn't survive a minor motorcycle accident. I need a very cheap replacement, £200 max, just to keep me going till I get something better in six months or so. The specs needed are below ideally looking at the largest screen/resolution I can. On this budget I know I'm looking at 2nd hand and no issue with that. Even something missing HDD and ram is fine as I can salvage those parts for the broken one. Thought I had lucked out before as I found a m6500 on eBay but the graphics are dx10 and min requirement is dx11. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Minimum Spec 64bit Intel compatible Dual Core CPU 2GB RAM DX11 compliant graphics card Microsoft Windows 7 (64bit only, Service Pack 1 or above) HDD with at least 3GB free disk space Internet Connection Recommended Spec 64bit Intel compatible Quad Core CPU 8GB RAM DX11 based graphics card Microsoft Windows 10 (64bit only) SSD with at least 3GB free disk space Internet Connection submitted by /u/Azraelle78 [link] [comments] |

I got a couple of prospect laptops in my head right now, The Inspiron 7577 and the Aspire 7. I really like the 7577 because of the build quality but my only problem, or anxiety, is the Dell Customer Service. 5 of the 7 people I got testimonies from say that the CS of Dell is very unreliable and poor. Right now I really want the 7577 but I'm too paranoid of what I'm hearing about their CS. The other laptop is the Acer Aspire 7, it fits on my budget, it's got i5-7300HQ, GTX 1050 Ti, and a simple outer design that doesn't yell out "gaming laptop." It looks perfect but what downside I see is it has the same thermal design as the Acer Nitro 5. I'm no expert in laptops so I base my choices on reviews on YouTube or wherever. And that this type of thermal design isn't good. So basically that's my only drawback to it. Oh almost forgot, the Aspire 7 isn't advertised a lot and I can only see, as of now, 3 reviews/unboxing videos on YouTube which I found to be really odd. Thanks for the help and the possible discussion. submitted by /u/cheffrancis_hd [link] [comments] |

Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Winders Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 max Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Frustrated with Spectre x360 looking for alternatives Posted: 30 Mar 2018 02:13 PM PDT Like I said in the title have the Spectre x360 early 2018 16GB RAM 512 SSD w/ kaby lake 8550u processor and MX150. Things just had fans blasting while trying to play some minecraft. I was hoping to be blown away and I'm a little disappointed considering the price point. I've also already had to return one that just cratered out of the box. Total budget and country of purchase: 1500-2000 USA Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't care about 2 in 1. Touch screen would be nice but honestly just want a great look with matching specs at not hefty. - How important is weight and thinness to you?
Weight would ideally be 4.5 to 5 lbs or less. Less is better but diminishing returns under 3.5 lbs. - Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
No strong preferences. - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
14 to 15 inch. - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Some light gaming plus lots of coding in R + Python. - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
All pretty basic games as I mostly game off my PS4. Would like to be able to run older titles bioshock/total war at high res. - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard and reliable build quality are must haves. A good touchpad is a plus as is a touchscreen. Strongly prefer no nose cameras. - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm a little torn looking at returning my spectre and switching to 8705 U process with Vega. The new yoga 730 is also tempting. Other than those I could use good suggestions since I'm really not tied to the device being a 2 in 1 anymore. Thanks! submitted by /u/ResitutorOrbis [link] [comments] |
Need a Laptop for College and Gaming. Posted: 30 Mar 2018 06:48 PM PDT - Total budget and country of purchase: Living in US budget is 800-900 could go a bit over but would like if it didn't.

Would like best bang for my buck. How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't want it to feel like a cinder block. Thinness doesn't really matter. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I want a laptop that will last me a good while and be reliable. Don't really care for the others. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. UK Laptop noob Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:42 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: UK £1200 (can stretch to £1300) Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would prefer best specs for the money. How important is weight and thinness to you? I do like a thinner laptop but I'm fairly realistic as to what will be available in my price range. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.4" preferably but I may go for 17.3" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Purely gaming. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? DayZ, Dead by Daylight, PUBG, Battlefield 1, Rainbow 6 siege. I would like to play at 1080p with as high of a frame rate as possible 50-60 fps. I don't mind messing with settings to achieve a smooth frame rate but would rather have the best of both if possible. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A 1080p screen that is not complete garbage. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have been browsing myself and I would like to get a laptop that has a GTX 1060 and a HQ / HK CPU i5 or i7 as long as it's a true quad core, 8 - 16 GB of RAM is fine, 1080p display. I would like an SSD but I'm not sure if the cheaper option would be to buy one separately. USA student saving up a lot of money for a quality college laptop Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:20 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Honestly, I've saved up almost every cent from my job to go towards this, so pretty much anything less than $4k will do. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good (preferably 8+ hours) battery life, best possible CPU/GPU, and 1TB SSD hard drive with 16 GB ram are what are most important to me. I would also prefer touch screen but it's not a requirement, especially if it sacrifices battery life too much. How important is weight and thinness to you? I would prefer the laptop to be able to fit into a school bag, and be carried without it feeling like a trap workout Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I am open to either Mac and Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I would prefer a 15.6 inch **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? I will probably be doing occasional film/music production in Premiere Pro and FL Studio. I'm brand new to gaming, so it's not as big of an influence. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? As of now I've only played Minecraft, Fortnite, CS:GO, and Overwatch. I hope to play some more games, and to enjoy them at 60FPS at the highest quality settings. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Since I would most likely be going into finance/business, I would prefer a keyboard with a numeric keypad built in. I would also be open to spending money on a laptop that has a build quality that will last me at least the 4 years of college as well as any possible further years of graduate school. Also, I would prefer if the keyboard wasn't too loud so that I could do late night work without disturbing a roommate, but fan noise is not a problem since I probably won't be gaming that late at night. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I currently have a Mac laptop but PC desktop, so I'm familiar with both OS's. While I have an iPhone and Macs are generally the go-to long battery life, reliable college laptops, I realize that PCs are the superior products for gaming as well as for those going into the finance industry. However, I'm very new to gaming and I'm still not 100% certain that I will go into finance. Since I'm new to researching laptops, I was hoping someone with more experience than me could give me some advice on where to look or what to do. Thank you! submitted by /u/shewantsthadit [link] [comments] |
GTX 1060 6GB laptop which doesn't make me look 13 Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:04 AM PDT Looking to do moderate 1080p gaming. I prefer good cooling--battery life, weight and the screen are secondary. I would like it to look presentable and not totally RGB gamery though, so I could take it into school if I need to once or twice. The current plan is to keep the new laptop at home and use it as a school one when my current school laptop fucks off. I need at least 16GB of RAM, and I think that's pretty much all. I'm buying from New Zealand, and my budget is probably up to around $3000 NZD, so probably around $2200 USD. As long as it doesn't have 128GB of RAM I'm sure the pricing will be fine either way. What laptop should I get for my grandma? Convince me to buy a Laptop, please! I got a few humble bundle games in it for ya if you can find something I like! Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:03 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $800-$1800 Canadian Dollars Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm unsure if I want a 2 in 1 form factor, I've never had a touchscreen computer and I'm inclined to think I wouldn't like it because the screen would get covered in fingerprints frequently or it would feel too flimsy. I could be persuaded to get one. Good battery life is important but specs come first since I am usually close to outlets and I would like to have a powerful computer. How important is weight and thinness to you? Lightness is a bonus since I'll be carrying it a lot, but not of utmost importance. It can be thin but I don't like flimsy. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Mac, I'm switching from Chrome OS. I have a Windows desktop so I am not too worried about not being able to run Windows-only apps on a laptop. I would like a Mac in some ways because it would pair well with my iPhone but I suspect there are better computers for my money. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Prefer 15", but I'll take a 13" with good specs/price first. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some gaming maybe, would like something powerful enough to handle photos well. Mostly for typical multitasking, running Microsoft word, slack, Spotify, and multiple browser tabs smoothly. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? It'd be nice if it could handle Dota 2 & Civ 6 well. Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good trackpad is KEY. I may end up using a mouse anyway, but I have a deep hatred for bad trackpads. I'm used to a mechanical keyboard but I think I can get used to anything. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've never been one to like laptops so I'd really appreciate finding something good. There are a few unclaimed humble bundles games to pick from if you find something I decide to buy! submitted by /u/Dregon [link] [comments] |
Dell Inspiron 7567 vs HP Pavilion Power Posted: 30 Mar 2018 08:56 PM PDT Hi, I badly need a recommendation probably from computer techies or those who have the mentioned units above. I did my research, scanned Youtube, browsed websites for reviews for each product, etc., but I am still unable to make the final decision. Both have good specs and has obvious downsides so I was hoping someone could help me finally decide. Here are the details for Dell Inspiron 7567 and HP Pavilion Power. To make this easier, I'll describe how I normally use my old laptop and my personality for you. If in any case you have a better suggestion than these two that I found, by all means do so. - Budget is $1000, but not completely closed-minded on spending more if it means it will have a better spec for the unit. Maximum budget is $1200.
- If I were to choose 2 things between Price, Portability, and Performance, I'd choose Price and Performance.
- I do somewhat heavy programming using Android Studios and Visual Studios 2017 on a weekly basis.
- I constatly do photo/video edits using PS, AE, PPro, and XD
- I want to start gaming again. Games with high requirements like Witcher 3, Rise of the Tomb Raider, GOW4, The new DOOM. Not that my old laptop can't game at all, but it had mediocre GPU so I can only play games with tolerable graphics requirements.
- I want to be "Future-proof" as what they would call, meaning I don't want to buy a unit when new line ups for better hardware components are coming. Even if it may not be i5/i7 8th gen, at least be a 7th gen, right?
- I hate TN panels, I really do, I work with my laptop in 2 common places, my home and in college. Both areas have problems with regards to surrounding light. It creates reflection and makes the screen harder to see.
- i5/i7 7th sounds kinda good, or maybe the difference with the 8th gen is that big of a deal?
- Don't know much about computer hardware, although I program. I'm almost just like any other person out there looking to buy a laptop but almost doesn't understand squat about what the sales person is talking about (meaning I could be easily fooled into sales talk and stuff).
- I'm the kind of guy that somehow sees the outside as important as the inside. Meaning I really dislike the 7567's colors design and would prefer the HP's because it doesn't scream "I AM A GAMER!" as this is one of the things that makes me hold back on the 7567. I know this is wrong and I'm still trying to change my perspective on this.

New laptop for (a lot of) data analysis, PhD dissertation writing Posted: 30 Mar 2018 02:28 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Canada, about $1500 CAD. $2000 CAD would really be my max. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for money. Portable. How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat. I don't enjoy working on excessively chunky laptops and I'll be spending a lot of time with this machine. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, possibly dual booting Linux Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I'd really like something that has a full numeric keyboard included, which will affect the screen size. I'd say 15" but I'm flexible here. Portability is still important. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. It would be cool if I could run some graphics-heavy open world games on this machine, like Skyrim, Fallout, etc. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above. Ideally running at medium plus quality. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard is important - I'd really like the number pad to be included. Backlit keyboard would be great. As much screen space as possible (not too much bezel on the screen if possible), I'm used to working with two screens at a desktop so it is already going to feel crowded. At least 2 USB ports. Bonus if it has a memory card reader built in. Good build quality. I've been a fan of Thinkpads in the past. I'd like to stick to SSD hard drives. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm hoping for the computer to feel fast and spacious, not be too clunky or annoying to lug around, and be able to handle having a lot of different applications open at once. I'll be processing large amounts of data, and I don't want it to freeze up on me. Thanks for your advice! submitted by /u/differentimage [link] [comments] |

[USA][~$1000] Looking for a UHD or QHD laptop on a modest budget. Posted: 30 Mar 2018 08:13 PM PDT My 2013 MacBook Pro is starting to crap out. Battery lasts about 2-4 hours of use and it is experiencing horrible slowdowns just using Gmail or Youtube. I primarily used that laptop for photo editing (the screen is the one thing keeping me hooked to it) and some light gaming such as Hearthstone, WoW, or RimWorld. I would love to find the unicorn of a modestly priced UHD or QHD display with discrete graphics, even if its a clearance item from last year. Total budget and country of purchase: United States. Looking to receive $400-500 trading in or selling my MacBook, I can budget another $400-600 on top of that. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Fair battery life and a good display is top priority. Discrete graphics is a luxury I may pay extra for. Not interested in a touch screen but wont complain if it is there. How important is weight and thinness to you? Preferred but not necessary. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" preferred Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop frequently and other Adobe products occasionally. Light gaming such as Hearthstone If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Blizzard Games; low graphics strategy games such as RimWorld, Civ 6, EU4. Would like to achieve native resolution at 60fps on low settings. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Strongly prefer metal construction Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My work will grant some money towards a laptop purchase, but they will be strongly put off if "gaming" is in the laptop name. submitted by /u/Blackadder288 [link] [comments] |
General Use Laptop for under 1100CAD Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:06 PM PDT - Total budget and country of purchase: 1100 CAD, Canada
Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Doesn't matter looking towards the best specs possible at that price. How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important, I currently have a macbook air 13 inch and I would like something similar in weight and thinness. Commute and travel often. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows/Mac Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Video and photo editing with light gaming. Premiere, Photoshop If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League and Fortnite, just as long as they can run smoothly, setting don't matter too much. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Similar keyboard to the macbook air if possible, something that I can type with for hours, similar build quality would be nice as well. Good battery life 8+ hours. - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would like something that can last for the next 3 years, something with a 13-15 inch screen would be great. Thanks in advance!
