    Need help: Coworkers sneaking up on me when I have sensitive information open

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 11:15 AM PST

    Background:

    • I deal with a lot of sensitive information like EE salary

    • I work in an office with an "open layout" aka very low walls

    • Colleagues come by and talk to me all day long

    • When they do, I click the bottom right "show desktop" button

    • It makes me look like a kid whose mom walked in on him watching porn

    What I need:

    • I need a more subtle solution than "show desktop"

    • I want to press one button that brings up the "layer underneath." For example, I have 3 monitors, each with Excel open. On top of that I have 3 chrome browsers open with EE salary. I press one button and it shows the layer below

    • Any other one button solutions are welcome

    Thank you.

    Edit: SOLUTION

    Created a python script that has the condition, when the mouse goes to the bottom of my screen, it automatically does "windows+m" and then launches a new site from a random list of links.

    #! python3

    # myScript.py

    import pyautogui as pya

    import time

    import subprocess

    import webbrowser

    import random

    while True:

    if pya.position()[1] > 1075:

     pya.hotkey('win','m') webbrowser.open(random.choice(myLinks)) time.sleep(1) pya.hotkey('win','up') break

    Whatsapp keeps crashing

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 12:34 AM PST

    I use a rooted Moto g5 plus, it also has an Xposed module for WhatsApp that I already disabled (didn't work). I tried rebooting several times, clearing cache of WhatsApp and reinstalling the app. It worked fine with the setup until you go into the main menu which instantly crashes it. Started yesterday, I didn't do anything weird before it began.

    I want to install Linux on my Chromebook, is it safe?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 11:40 PM PST

    So, my max internet speed is 1.5mb/s. but I just downloaded a game at 90mb/s. never happened before, speed tests are normal now. What happened?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 05:15 PM PST

    I figured it was just a visual bug, but the game is fully downloaded and playable.

    I've been getting 1.5mb/s for 3 years, then literally just this one game decided to download at 90mb/s.

    Im Australian using ADSL2+ so i dont think those speeds are actually possible are they? how in the world did this happen.

    Really need help on mouse and keyboard issues...

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 09:17 PM PST

    Hello everyone, i hope you are having a nice day...

    Ill just cut down to the problem. Few nights ago I had a blue screen error (unexpected mistake that recollect information after it occurs and then shuts down). After that night my mouse stoped working correctly (Razer Naga Epic 2014). Now, let me tell you, this mouse has a number pad that connects with the numer pad on the keyboard so they do the same thing. The mouse number pad does not work anymore (note: the keyboard one does work fine). I can click, I can move, scroll, etc; but this is still an issue for me since I use a lot of hotkeys. Now, in addition to this I noticed (while doing troubleshooting since I study engineering) that when I connect my keyboard (Razer blackwidow ultimate) or my mouse to another usb port they don't work. I don't think the problem is the ports since when I connect other things there they do read. Also, when I connect another mouse it wont read it, says its ready to use after driver installs but nothing (haven't tried with another keyboard).

    For me, all this issues im having are really strange, so ill tell you the troubleshooting I have done so maybe I can get help because im totally lost and scared that if at any time something screws up im not gonna be even able to format the PC. 1) I did a clean uninstall of razer synapse (for those who know, it's a razer software, which should recognize my devices but does not actually. It can however recognize them if I use the stat tracker of the software. No, not even enabled do the devices work correctly). 2) I tried all usb ports and checked if the numpad was enabled on the keyboard. 3) I tried the mouse on another pc and tries to use the number pad. It did work. 4) I checked for updates on the drivers of the devices. They are up to date. 5) I did a system restore to the day it worked fine. 6) I checked if the ports aren't off for power usage means. 7) I uninstalled the driver only for the mouse (on device manager) and checked that when I rebooted and reconnected the mouse it did not read any driver so it did not work, ALSO, after I did this the mouse could not be read on other computers. This is why I did point #5.

    When i change the devices of port and they dont work there are exclamation marks on some things on the device manager window. I can provide images if needed for help but i think i cannot do this here...

    So I really really would appreciate help because im on panic and cant seem to figure this out myself…these things happening are really weird from my POV.

    Thanks in advance guys. Srsly.

    Did i buy wrong memory type for my Xeon workstation?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 09:17 PM PST

    I purchased memory stick off ebay to upgrade the RAM on my workstation. However it does not get detected at all.

    The sticker on the chip reads: 8GB 2Rx4 PC3L 12800R (Samsung). From the seller it has info as: DDR3 PC3-12800 DDR3-1600 REGISTERED • ECC • Dual Rank 240 pin

    I have a HP Z420 Workstation with Xeon E5-1650 and also have a PowerEdge T20 with Xeon E3-1225 and none of them boots when i replace existing memory with new one. The system just makes the beeping noise.

    From what I understand the PC3L module should work fine if installed in PC3 slot. My existing memory is PC3 and I tried to remove the existing memory thinking mix and match is causing the problem but that is not the case

    Did i get the wrong type? or is the product itself is faulty?

    Everything sounds wavy and underwater

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 07:30 PM PST

    My PC has been like this for the past month or so. Basically, every voice sounds wavy and distorted like it's underwater. Most music sounds fine. Most, at least. I tried deleting and reinstalling my audio drivers, which worked at first but then eventually the issue came back and deleting the drivers no longer worked. The only issue windows could find was there was a generic audio driver and i can't find a fix for it. Thanks.

    PC booting problems.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 01:52 AM PST

    My pc boots then immediately hits a blue screen saying that windows has detected an error, then proceeds to restart and boots completely normally. This wasn't a huge problem.

    Recently after doing the above, when my computer does "boot normally" only 1 of my monitors are working and its stuck in 1280x720 and an error pops up saying "no supported hardware". After 3 minutes, the working monitor goes to 1920x1080 (the correct res) but the second monitor doesn't turn on and there is still no hardware supported.

    I've tried going into Display settings and manually changing the res from 1280 to 1920 but 1280 is the only option. I've always tried clicking "detect monitors" but nothing happens. Eventually by some miracle my main monitor turns on and everything works fine, but this is after 15 or so minutes.

    This never used to happen and my setup has stayed the same.

    I'll be glad to give any extra information that can help you guys help to help me.

    Thanks in advance.

    Stop Windows 10 from expanding view of all removable storage in explorer

    Basically this is the problem, as you see with my Elements drive I plugged in. Whenever a flash drive is inserted all folders are shown. It can get really messy once I've got a few drives connected. Any way to prevent this?

    Keyboard not working any longer. Has to be corrupt software somewhere but I am unable to find it.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 09:05 PM PST

    So I have a steelseries apex m500. It all started one morning when I woke up and my keyboard kept reconnecting and disconnecting. I have tested the keyboard to see if it's a faulty keyboard and it is not. My USB ports are fine as well.

    I started with deleting my HID keyboards in device manager to see if I could get anything going, and disabling selective suspend (which I believe was already disabled) and I had no luck. I used a backup keyboard for a few months forgetting about it. Well, recently I reseated my CPU heatsink due to heating issues, and I figured, why not try my old m500? Well, I plugged it in, and it worked great. For 6 hours. Then it started doing this reconnecting and disconnecting issue again.

    So today I've spent my time trying to figure out how to fix it. Well, when I delete all the software (that I am able to find), I was one time able to get it to pop up as the steelseries apex m500 keyboard finally, as opposed to just a generic keyboard, and it said driver error. Now this confirmed my suspicion that it is some sort of software issue. I'm at the point where it will not continue even trying to plug and play and auto install the software anymore due to me using all my USB slots. Even after deleting the HID in Device manager.

    My question to you guys is; how do I completely WIPE my keyboard software/drivers so that it can have a clean install? If not I'll probably be doing a fresh windows install which I'd rather not have to do.

    p.s. Steelseries will RMA the keyboard, but I don't think that will fix it due to it seeming to be some sort of files on my pc that seem to be conflicting.

    I Can't Use My Earphones' Mic! Windows 10

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 12:35 AM PST

    So, I've had to go snooping through my settings for several reasons and my earphones settings got reset. Before, I could use the mic on my earphones but now I can't anymore. Is there any way to fix this? They are apple earphones and I just want to use the mic on it instead of the mic on my laptop, which sucks. I really need this. I'm forced to use Waves MaxxAudioPro if that information is useful. I've went through the internet for ages and nothing seems to help me. Thanks in advance

    Is my RAM running at the correct frequency?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 12:32 PM PST

    So today I purchased an 8GB DDR4 2133 Mhz, yet when I check in CPU-z, it says my frequency is 1063 Mhz

    Am I missing something?

    https://imgur.com/a/kT9L6

    Edit: Nvm, just clocked on that DDR stands for double data rate, so 1063x2 would be 2133.

    Ryzen RAM compatibility help please

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 12:27 AM PST

    Planning to buy Asus ROG Strix B350-F and Ryzen 1600.

    I can't find any cheap RAM that is on both AMD and Motherboard support.

    https://www.amd.com/system/files/2017-06/am4-motherboard-memory-support-list-en_0.pdf

    http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/SocketAM4/STRIX_B350-F_GAMING/ROG-STRIX-B350-F-GAMING_Memory_QVL_180125.pdf?_ga=2.103956736.1087313253.1519384699-2093014540.1518247698

    One I found, CMK8GX4M1A2400C16R is on AMD list but not on Motherboards list, and another CMK8GX4M1A2400C14R is on Motherboard list(minus the R, which I assume stands for red heat spreader as the non-R one is Black) and not AMD's.

    Does this matter? Please help!

    Notepad is opening package files?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 09:51 PM PST

    I'm on Windows 10 and use Google Chrome. When I download a package file, Notepad opens up. A picture of what happens is attached. It's not very pretty. The file still downloads, but I have to look for it in File Explorer rather than it just going to the bottom of the page and me clicking "show in finder" or whatever it says. This just started happening today. I tried to go into settings and change it, but the only option it gave me was to look in the Windows Store to find another thing that can open it. I'm not even sure if open is the right word, sorry. But anyway, I'm not sure how to get it back to normal. It was working fine before. I just hate that Notepad opens up every single time. what happens

    I'm admin, but I keep getting this error when I try and open a specific installer. What gives?

    Has a workaround been found for Displayport monitors resizing windows when monitor is turned off?

    So monitors that use the displayport port are PnP.

    The issue with this is any time the monitor is powered off Windows no longer detects the monitor and either moves all windows to a virtual desktop (which is 1024x728) or to other monitors you have plugged in. This is infuriating as it will resize and move windows, change game resolutions and switch them to windowed mode every single time.

    I've seen a few workarounds that seem to be very hardware specific such as only for Nvidia Quadro cards, but thus far no known workarounds have done anything for my build. I've tried changing the virtual desktop resolution in regedit

    @ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration then finding entries with SIMULATED then changing ActiveSize.cx and ActiveSize.cy to 2560x1080 instead of 1024x728 but this hasn't seemed to have worked like others have reported.

    If anyone has discovered anything that works I would love to hear.

    I'm running windows 7, with a GTX1080, and my monitor is an LG-34UC89G
