Can you recommend a personal organiser for Linux? Posted: 31 Mar 2018 02:45 AM PDT Hello - I'm looking for recommendations for a personal organiser app - something from apt repo would be good. Ideally something with a calendar and todo task lists, it could be work / co-op oriented - but a private organiser would be fine as well. I'm using Ubuntu if that makes a difference! thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2018 09:12 AM PDT Hello there. I'm having a little problems here. So, here in my country, we have to make a project to end our school. Since I choose Programming, something based on it. I decided to make a Linux distribuition for my school. My idea would be: Possibly based on Ubuntu, because it's really noob-friendly. I don't want anything crazy, just some software that kids need like Brackets, XAMPP, GIMP, etc, changing desktop background to our school's, some theming and finally, doesn't store any of the students doing, like files they probably forget, logins, etc. My first attempt has to install Ubuntu 16.0x / Linux Mint 18.x, remove unecessary software, install the above software and theming. I was using Remastersys / PinguyBuilder, it boots to Live System, but doesn't even open the Installation window, so nothing done. <br /> I used Systemback, but my last attempt (yesterday) wasn't that good either. After everything, I'm open to new ideas. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Reboot loop. Ubuntu and win10 dual. Posted: 31 Mar 2018 11:25 AM PDT I just got Ubuntu 17.1 loaded with Rufus. I switched between the two and nothing went wrong. Well... Ubuntu wanted to update. Ok. Reboot? Ok. Crap. Rebooting I can get to bios, but it will not help much due to it being an Acer and it's an exe to flash. I can run off of a flash drive. Been trying to run WINE but dead ends in downloading it. Error pic below... [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:03 PM PDT I installed Fedora Custom Operating System which is a minimal version of fedora without any DE. I then installed the following: and started i3 with cdm. I then tried to start gnome-terminal with dmenu but it did not do anything. I then tried to start it through urxvt. When I did that, first it did not do anything either and after about 20 seconds it displayed: In English it would be something like this probably: Is that because of missing dependencies since I don't have the Gnome DE installed or is it a different reason? Linux Mint is after installation not there/gone Posted: 31 Mar 2018 10:07 AM PDT So i was going to install linux mint on my laptop next to win 10. I made a second partition on my 1tb hdd with about 250gb and made the usb stick with rufus with the iso of linux mint. changed the boot order so it boots from my usb stick then restartet and it bootet from my stick. installation wasnt hard and i changed the install location to the second partition of my hdd where its supposed to be. no problems so far. after the installation is complete and i restart (usb still plugged in) it boots again only to the test enviroment. if i try to start after i take the usb out it boots to windows 10 without giving me a choice. and i already looked at the advanced system settings. but i cant choose linux as my start system because it isnt listed. and when i go to the partition of my hdd where it should be installed there is only ~150mb occupied which made me believe that even though it got the message "installation is complete" it didnt even got installed in the first place Laptop is a Acer Spire ES-17 es1-731g-p5ur Intel® Pentium® N3700 Prozessor 4x 1,60 GHz 8 GB DDR3L SDRAM 1600 Win 10 1709 16299.309 would be open for any advice on this as i tried it multiple times now and it still has the same result [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2018 07:33 AM PDT I'm running tinycore, and I want to install a node module. That means installing node first, because tinycore doesn't come packaged with it. There's a node package for tinycore though, so that's easy. I install node.tcz, then I go to install the node module, and I get this:
I google that, and apparently it's an error with older versions of node. All I have to do is install a new version. So I download the source and ./configure, make, and I get this:
This is weird, because it looks like people were having this error more than ten years ago, but my version of gcc is just a few months old. Apparently I have to modify the source code, or install a patch, but I can't figure out where that patch is, or even if a patch from ten years ago will solve the problem I'm having today. What's the easiest way for me to get my module installed? I don't really care if gcc works in the future, because I don't plan on keeping it in the remastered version of this OS. I'm just using it to create an sfs of working node + module that I can use for the remaster, and then I'm done with gcc. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:42 PM PDT Hi folks! It took me some time to lead this problem back to my phone, but it is. Let me tell you first about my setup, all Linux: From left to right I have three screens on my table: a mini-pc (with monitor), my main machine (with monitor) and a laptop. They're all only connected with two things: I control them via Synergy (main machine as server) and share the audio via pulseaudio. Other than that, they don't share a connection. (Well, they're on the same network) When my phone (Android) is not connected, there is no problem at all. If I connect my phone, my main machine's monitor starts to flicker (e.g. when notifications pop in), or even blacks out if I get a call - the monitor then says it isn't connected at all to my machine! The strange thing: The USB connection to my phone is connected to my mini-pc, NOT my main machine! So e.g. every X minutes my K-9 fetches new emails and gathers them in a notification: short black screen of about half a second. After that, normal behaviour. Someone sends me an instant message: short black and then normal again. Someone calls me? It is black as long as my phone is in the USB and my screen goes totally black, as if I pulled the DisplayPort cable and tells me no device it connected. If I answer the call or remove the USB, monitor is back to normal immediately. I also have The USB-to-phone on my mini-pc is named as the following: It gets really annoying on like every hour, when many services update and want to show notifications: My screen flickers black-and-to-normal again a few times (like 10-15 times). After that, everything is normal again. Does anyone have an idea on what is causing this? If you need any further information, please ask! [link] [comments] |

Need help setting up xrdp on Ubuntu Mate 1.18.0 Posted: 31 Mar 2018 06:34 AM PDT Trying to set up a NAS server that I can remote desktop into from my Windows 10 system. I've followed this guide, but on attempting to connect from the Windows system, I get a black screen with "Could not acquire name on session bus". On googling this issue, I found this similar situation, solved by editing an xsession.ini file. BUT on my Mate system, there's no xsession file in the ~etc/xrdp folder. I have checked to show hidden files, but it still does not appear. Does anyone know how I can find/make a proper xsession file? (If this is the right solution) [link] [comments] |

[Arch] Getting Pulse Audio to work with a hybrid setup. (5.1 speakers, headphones, DisplayPort) Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:20 PM PDT Hi everyone, I've spent the past few hours pulling my hair out trying to get this to work so I thought I'd come here for some help. Desired State: Have the default audio playback come through a 5.1 speaker configuration with the option of plugging in a pair of headphones. Ideally the speakers would automatically mute when the headphone jack is inserted. And vice versa when unplugged. I do not care if the DisplayPort audio works as my monitor audio is terrible. Hardware Configuration: This might not be possible, however, as I would be using the 3.5mm jack on my keyboard. Which is just an extension cable to the front-mic jack on my computer chassis. Rear-mic jack is unpopulated. There are three 3.5mm cables connected to my motherboard. Front, Rear, Center/Sub. Attempted Solutions: 1) When I first reinstalled Arch (new motherboard; Z370), my speakers were not working at all. However, headphones and DisplayPort audio were. After making the changes found here, Arch automatically enables "Line Out - Build-in Audio" which is correctly detected as 5.1 after making the changes. 2) After that, I made the changes found here to allow a hybrid headphones / 5.1 configuration. Current State: After making these changes, I have ran My Theory: So I think Pulseaudio has somehow been misconfigured to have a hybrid audio configuration. Where 4/6 speakers play through the 5.1 configuration, and the remaining 2 play through my headphones. Which are muted by default. Using Relevant Configuration Files /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output-headphones.conf /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output-lineout.conf /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output-speaker.conf Screenshots of Graphical Configurations: pavucontrol Configuration Screen pavucontrol Configuration Screen: GP106 High Definition Audio Control Menu Expanded pavucontrol Configuration Screen: Built-in Audio Menu Expanded pavucontrol Playback Screen: Device Menu Expanded pavucontrol Output Devices Screen alsamixer Default Device Screen alsamixer Default Device Screen; Expanded alsamixer HDA Intel PCH Device Screen - Surround Sound, no Working Front Speakers alsamixer HDA Intel PCH Device Screen; Headphones enabled - Hybrid Surround with Headphones paman Server information Screen *Note: All screenshots except final alsamixer image were taken with headphones muted, 0 volumed. Please let me know if I can provide any additional information. I'm stumped. Thank you for your time. EDITS EDIT 1: Booting the computer with front headphone jack populated/unpopulated has no effect on any configuration. EDIT 2: Added EDIT 3: Added EDIT 4: Here is another person with my issue, no solution presented however. EDIT 5: I do not see any related troubleshooting steps on the Arch Wiki pages PulseAudio, PulseAudio/Troubleshooting, or PulseAudio/Examples EDIT 6: I would be completely okay if the DisplayPort audio had to be sacrificed in order to ensure that 5.1/headphones work properly. It will be unused. [link] [comments] |
Need Advice: Best Steps to take transitioning from Windows to GNU/Linux Posted: 31 Mar 2018 10:30 AM PDT I read a lot of different things online. The vast majority of articles have similar steps to take but I always hear different suggestions. My question to you is: What is the best step progression to take on transitioning my windows desktop to a GNU/Linux based desktop computer. Note: I have many files I want to keep but I do not have an external storage device to transfer those files to. I want to get rid of evil Windows altogether. I am tired of the messiness, bloatware and malware filled OS that it brings along with it. I am a minimalistic, simplistic person and want to do a full transition to a Lubuntu like distro. I tried Ubuntu and dislike the chaos that ensues. I want to continue down my path to learn how to code and would like any chaos to be reserved only to the code I am working with. Thanks for your help. [link] [comments] |
Slackware 14.2 web proxy configuration Posted: 31 Mar 2018 09:46 AM PDT Hello everyone! I am needing to configure unRaid (running on Slackware 14.2) to use web proxy settings for internet access. All port 80/443 traffic is behind a proxy in this environment. I am new to slackware, more time spent with Debian and Ubuntu; and apparently my google-foo is weak because I am unable to find a way to configure the host with our web proxy address and credentials. Thank you in advance for your time and any help! :-) [link] [comments] |

BIOS Boot Partition needed in BIOS/MBR setup? Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:50 AM PDT I'm installing Gentoo by following the official handbook. In the handbook, section "Preparing the disks - Using fdisk to partition the disk", which states that this section is for MBR, it asks to create a BIOS Boot Partition. As far as I understand, a BIOS Boot Partition is needed for BIOS/GPT setup. Can somebody please explain to me the purpose of a BIOS Boot Partition in BIOS/MBR setup? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:43 PM PDT Hello I came here because it says linux4noobs but what I am seeing is still over my head. I am looking for what is the first step if I want to switch to linux? I read somewhere that an old computer running slowly would work well if you just switched it to linux. Is that correct? I have a laptop with an i7 that is 10 years old but I still use to run programs while I work on my new laptop. Thanks for the help! [link] [comments] |
Clean uninstall Shadowsocks on Debian Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:02 PM PDT I installed Shadowsocks just to test, and then I uninstalled it. What distro for everyday use and running virtual machines? Posted: 30 Mar 2018 05:25 PM PDT I've been at a boiling point for awhile with Windows 10, and recently I've completely boiled over. NO MORE! My computer now is 10 years old. I want to build a new one in the near future. Windows 10 is NOT an option. Though I do like MacOS, I can't justify the high buy in price of the hardware. I've done the Hackintosh thing before, but it ultimately ends up feeling broken and buggy. That leaves Linux. I'm not a total noob and I have installed/used it before, but I always chickened out on taking the red pill and using it full time. The best I can come up with is to use Linux as a foundation operating system for most tasks, and have virtual machines of Windows 7 and 10 for software/tasks where there is no other option. Which distribution would be best for me to start with? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2018 06:39 AM PDT Feren and extern OS seems like the perfect Linux distro for normies like me who knows nothing about command prompt or programming. Although you don't have to struggle with packages in feren because whenever you download a software you automatically get the packages. Which is perfect for me, I don't know what those packages are, lol. [link] [comments] |
