Is an access point what I need? Posted: 03 Mar 2018 07:30 AM PST I currently have my modem and router in a room at the back of my house and because of this the wifi signal at the other end of the house is poor. What I want to do is a run an ethernet cable from my router, under the house and up to the front room and then hook that up to something that will give me a good wifi signal in the front room on the other side of the house. After doing some digging it seems like what I need is an "access point"? Is this correct? Also from looking around it seems like people recomend this access point: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B015PR20GY . If I buy just that and the ethernet cable would that allow me to accomplish what I want to do? Do these things work with any router or do I need more special equipment? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Mar 2018 07:36 PM PST Hi, I've read a similar post on here, but I didn't understand pieces of it. I currently have two routers, once in each building. The one in the house (router #1) is where the internet comes in. The second router is in my outbuilding, which is a steel building. It is wired with cat 6 from a cable that comes out of router #1. In case it matters at all, I have 6 nest cameras running off of router #2 and also have a driveway gate that runs off of this as well. It would be ideal to have 1 network and I'd like to switch to Google Wifi. I read in other posts about switches, but don't really know what type of switch it is referring to. The buildings are approx 80' apart. This is an image that shows it pretty well. https://imgur.com/Kh06nGj Can I use Google Wifi in this scenario? Any advice on how to set it up? I'll send cookies to you for your help :) Thanks! Meg [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 05:28 PM PST I am trying to setup Ethernet ports across my home, I have a small hub in my garage with all the cables junctioned in the box. There is no labels on the cables as in where they are coming from so I need to label the cables with the room names. Is there any tool like a tracer that I can use to find out which cable is which. Appreciate your response. [link] [comments] |
Looking for the best wireless adapter and router to achieve the highest throughput. Posted: 03 Mar 2018 05:06 PM PST I'm looking for the best wireless adapter for my PC in addition with a new router so that I can get the most throughput and low latency. I am looking to be able to stream 4k games from my PC to a nvidia shield. Also want to be able to run a seedbox (for my Linux isos) and run a plex server. What should I get? Everyone here seems to be recommending an Archer c7.c8,c9 or an edgerouter-x with Unifi Ap-AC Lite. But what should I get to connect with my PC? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Mar 2018 12:01 PM PST I setup a router with tomato and 4 vlans. Everything but 1 of the vlans work great. I can't figure out why 1 vlan won't work, there is nothing special about it. It's br1 and vlan I'd 10. Subnet is x.x.10.x. I tried using it in a couple of ports, untagged and a couple of different PC's. [link] [comments] |
RJ45 Cat6 keystone colors for B setup causing slow speeds Posted: 03 Mar 2018 01:32 PM PST Was experiencing slow network speeds so I did some troubleshooting and found out the connectors are the choke point for my ethernet cable. I am using CAT6 with the proper CAT6 keystone for the wall plate, and I did the B pass through on both ends. I replaced the one end with just a straight RJ45 connector and plugged it directly into the router and the network speeds increased dramatically ( though still not where it should be). I don't have enough slack on the cable to just replace the other end with a RJ45 and plug it into my computer, but I'm not sure that replacing the keystone jack will help since I did them both as the B passthrough... Posted: 03 Mar 2018 09:22 AM PST My house currently has Coax coming into the attic with a 2 way splitter which runs 1 cable to my living room and the other cable to my office. The Coax run to the living room has my modem and wireless router plugged in and my office currently has nothing just a Coax stub. My question are as follows. 1) In order to get Ethernet cable into my office is my best bet to setup a MoCA network? (running cable through the walls isn't a good option) 2) To setup a MoCA network do i need 2 MoCA adapters? The first being in my living room connected to my modem/router and the 2nd one being in my office to convert from COAX to Cat5? [link] [comments] |
Spectrum - No NAT loopback - Synology Docker Posted: 03 Mar 2018 12:31 PM PST Hello, My parents have a Synology NAS (DS216+II). I've installed NextCloud and a few other apps via Docker. I can access the services externally via Subdomain. For the life of me, I could not figure out why they couldn't access the websites from home. I finally found out their router does not support NAT Loopback. I guess a way around this is by setting up the DNS Server package through Synology but I'm completely lost from there. Right now - The subdomains have an A-record to the WAN IP. I used Synology's built-in reverse proxy to resolve localhost:xxx and it works perfectly for everyone EXCEPT them. Ugh so annoying... Plz help. Step by Step would be amazing but I will take any and all help given... [link] [comments] |
Looking for some help with buying/installing a new router? Posted: 03 Mar 2018 10:10 AM PST Hi, Ive just got a few questions i was hoping could be answered regarding buying a new router for my home. I live in the UK and have Sky Fibre, my net is mostly used for Gaming (PS4/wired), torrenting and streaming on mac + 3 iPhones. Ive noticed recently that my wireless isn't performing very well (streams buffering more than usual etc) and i've tried the usual changing wireless channels etc. My router is only 15ft away behind a door. I looked around and saw this router for pretty cheap. Im just wondering how easy it is to set up these routers in comparison to my standard sky hub? Will i need anything anything else to be able to choose how much bandwidth each of my devices receive? Will this likely improve my wireless? Any advice is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
External hard drive and router Posted: 03 Mar 2018 02:29 AM PST I have a plug and play 1tb external hard drive and a WiFi router with USB ports built in. I don't think it's as easy as plugging the hard drive into the router, but could someone point me in the right direction. I want someone who is on our WiFi to be able to access the terabyte and watch a movie or view pictures on there. Any advice helps, cheers. [link] [comments] |
Internet cuts out when phone rings? Posted: 03 Mar 2018 03:03 AM PST Hi all, the house I live in is older and the internet is ADSL - through an overhead phone line. Around a year ago I had problems with the home phone (not working properly), long story short whenever someone rings the internet cuts out, however it reconnects as usual in around a minute (power related?) . Can anyone suggest any solutions for this? Thanks for the help :) [link] [comments] |

Best solution for terrible speed to desktop - FiOS router Posted: 03 Mar 2018 04:01 AM PST I have the "gigabit" connection from FiOS through their dumb, expensive router, because I can't get the fiancee to agree to get rid of the cable box but anyway. Speeds to my desktop via an extremely old (a/b/g if I remember rights) USB wifi adapter are around 350 kbps according to the fast.com speed test. Same test from my phone within feet of the router gives a more reasonable 200+ Mbps. I also live in a recent build, rental townhouse. Due to the arrangement between where the ONT and router are, and where the "office" is, there's at least 30', three walls, and a floor between the router and my desktop. I can't really move the computer because of space and function constraints. While I'd love to run ethernet, that's not really feasible due to a) no permanent installation per landlord, and b) tripping hazard, cat hazard, and fiancee acceptance factor of a 50+' run of cable across the floor and up the stairs. I figure I have a few possible solutions:
Is a new adapter likely to solve the issue, or a set of powerline adapters, or do I likely need to drop more cash? [link] [comments] |
Wireless Router under $100-ish? Posted: 02 Mar 2018 08:57 PM PST I'm getting new service with WebPass for an apt in SF and they require me to have my own router. Haven't bought own before since I rented mine from TWC/Spectrum in the past. Don't wanna spend too much, prefer to keep it under $100. Been looking at CNET's list (https://www.cnet.com/topics/networking/best-networking-devices/cheap/) and the Netgear R6700 on Wirecutter. Appreciate any suggestions. [link] [comments] |
Link teaming with unmanaged switch, increased transfer speeds. Posted: 03 Mar 2018 12:15 AM PST Hello!, A week ago with next to no effort, i had link teaming working under windows 10 pro with a unmanaged asus xg-u2008 switch. One pc was connected with a 10gbe nic to the 10gbe port on the switch, other pc was connected with 2 1gbe nic slots from motherboard, and a usb3 to nic adapter for a max bandwidth of 3gbe. A week later and it will only ever use one of the nic adapters, for a max transfer speed of 111mb/s. After googling a ton, my conclusion is that this should never have been possible, and should not have worked ever. The closest thing i could find was a stage where nic teaming was accidentally enabled on windows 10 rather than just windows server. My only thought is that i've had old drivers or updates installed, and a update has corrected the issue. Am i on the right track? would a managed switch get this functionality back? The second pc is a mitx motherboard, so i don't have a slot to just put a 10gbe card in it. Any insight would be appreciated, [link] [comments] |

Need help...TP-Link Archer C7 is giving me fits! Posted: 02 Mar 2018 08:32 PM PST I have a TP-Link Archer C7 wireless router that I bought about a month/month and a half ago to replace my dead Netgear router that gave me almost no issues for nearly 7 years. I will preface this also by saying this is my second C7, the first one was giving me similar issues as I listed below and I thought maybe it was defective so I exchanged it. I thought the Archer C7 would be a good buy as it had pretty good reviews, but for some reason I have a hell of a time resetting the thing. It's been fine since I got it, for the most part- I had some difficulty during initial setup because the router was acting like it didn't want to come on, but I got it working and it was fine. For reference, I have two computers and a PS3 hooked directly to it and also use the wireless. Once about two weeks ago it was letting no data through at all, I reset it and it worked fine. Earlier tonight I was using it, no issues. I notice a couple hours later that my phone was not connected to the wifi, and my PS3 wouldn't connect. I checked out the router and modem, all the lights were on on the router and the internet light was green, and the modem was good, but the internet was not working at all, and this was where my problems started. I attempted to reset the router and the modem. The modem comes back on fine, but on the router it does this: -Power light comes on for a few seconds, then goes off. -Power light comes back on, flashing, and flashes for awhile. -After this the power light either goes off and it does nothing else, or the power light stays solid and it does nothing else. If I unplug the ethernet cable going from the router to the modem and reset the router, all the lights will come back on on the front of the router, but the internet light stays red even if I hook it back up to the modem, and I have no connection. If I reset both at the same time it does what i described above. I've finagled with it and tried several differnt sequences and get one of these two results, with no connection. If I hook any of my devices directly to the modem, the internet works fine, so I know the issue isn't the modem. Somebody please help me because I can't figure out why this damn thing won't reset and it's driving me crazy. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2018 08:29 PM PST Can someone give me a for-dummies answer why I can't do modem->switch->router? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
