Posted: 29 Mar 2018 06:35 AM PDT Hey everybody! If you're in the market for wired access points (ie, running network cable between the APs, which gives you much greater coverage and higher quality connections than all-wifi mesh) I reviewed eight of them over at SmallNetBuilder. https://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-reviews/33191-2x2-ac-access-point-roundup-part-2 TONS of graphs and data. Tim lets me nerd out a lot more than the mainstream consumer sites do. =) [link] [comments] |
Is Ubiquiti really better than other top routers ? Posted: 29 Mar 2018 06:52 AM PDT I've seen a lot of praises for Ubiquiti router or AP in this subreddit. I wonder if Ubiquiti is truly better than the top residential routers, like Asus, Netgear or D-Link. If so, do you have any idea what it makes Ubiquiti better ? Because specs-wise, I don't see anything stands out when compared to other great routers. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Router Port Forwarding Problem Posted: 29 Mar 2018 08:12 PM PDT Hello! I am here with a problem regarding my router, well and my PC. I am trying to portforward any port, in specific 25565, for Minecraft, but it isn't working. I've tried turning off my firewall, editing the ipv4 settings, etc, but it still continues not to work. I have a Netgear Nighthawk x6 r8000. I have set my IPv4 to be static, but that doesn't change it. I have googled it many times, but I still can't find the cause of the problem. It only happens to my PC, but port forwarding works fine on my laptop, and my family members computer. Below are some screenshots. CMD: https://i.gyazo.com/1e1ff8082c191221cc029ed5e9a142ee.png Netgear Genie: https://i.gyazo.com/a395dafd196635d729d9635bb1d06377.png IPv4 settings after resetting: https://i.gyazo.com/495281e1d5cdab85327e8a2474c424df.png After 3 hours, I still can't seem to get port forwarding on THIS COMPUTER working. please help [link] [comments] |
nginx giving 502 error with flask app Posted: 29 Mar 2018 07:37 PM PDT I have a python flask app that I'm trying to serve using uwsgi and nginx. I'm following the tutorial here: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-serve-flask-applications-with-uwsgi-and-nginx-on-ubuntu-16-04 I am fairly proficient with python, but the networking side I'm struggling with. In particular, when I launch my app by invoking uwsgi itself from the working directory and within the virtual environment it works fine. <myhost>:5000/<apidetails> works fine from there. But when I move to nginx I can't seem to get it to connect. Looking at the error log I see that it's a socket issue:
also running
I can't seem to figure out why this is happening. I feel like I should point out that <myapp>.sock doesn't exist, am I supposed to create that? what should it contain? This link: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/questions/502-bad-gateway-nginx-2 mentions this:
Does anyone know where I could have gone wrong? I can provide any info you want I just don't want to overload this post initially Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Port forwarding for web server never works no matter what port I use Posted: 29 Mar 2018 06:05 PM PDT Hey everyone, Pretty self explanatory, been trying all day to get a simple nginx server running on a static IP and I am getting nothing. https://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ is always telling me the ports are closed. I have a static IP for it. One thing to note, I am in a share house, so I dont actually own the router. Why is this happening? Router: Sagecom F@ST 3864 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Mar 2018 05:15 PM PDT I have a netgear x6 ac3200 and I know it is not a business product however I am trying to figure out if there is a way to vlan one of the wireless networks. I am putting smart home devices in my house and I want them on a separate network. How can I accomplish this without adding another wireless router? [link] [comments] |
Advice on best setup for two house property that sees high traffic with many devices Posted: 29 Mar 2018 12:41 PM PDT My grandfather owns a vacation home and I have been given the job of maintaining the network. I'm looking for some advice on the best setup. The property has a main house and a second house that the kids(15-25 year olds) hang out/sleep in. The house is on a lake and is mostly used during the summer when it sees weekends with as many as 30 people. Everyone has a phone, many have laptops or tablets, the kids have gaming consoles, and there is always someone streaming Netflix or something else. All in all lots of traffic/usage all day and night. Right now I have the shitty ISP router in the main house with an ethernet line run underground in conduit to the second house roughly 150 ft away. The second house has a shitty Linksys router. I think I'd like the two on the same network but not sure if this is necessary or if I'm just making it more complicated for no reason. The shitty ISP router does not handle the load well so I want to replace it. I'm a recent comp sci grad, so I'm not worried about setting it up, but I don't know if something like Unify is over the top for the situation...I don't need any really advanced features, I just need everyone's mobile device to connect them to the internet. I'd appreciate any info or opinions. Thanks Edit: Main house is 2 story about 2300 sq. Second house is about 2 story about 1500. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Mar 2018 04:17 PM PDT I am trying to set up a VPN connection on Windows server 2016. I have everything configured correctly (I think), but when I go to my web address it asks for the log in and password for my router and logs me in to the router and not my server. How do I bypass or forward through my router so I can log in to my server? I already have port 443, 80, 3389, and 1723 forwarded to my server IP. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Mar 2018 03:32 PM PDT New to networking, tried to set up some MoCA. My current setup is: coax port on wall -> modem -> router -> ethernet -> MoCA -> coax into wall -> coax out of wall -> second MoCA -> ethernet -> computer It doesn't work. The coax lights on the MoCAs are not lit up, and my computer has no internet from the ethernet. Just moved in to this place about 2 months ago, we have xfinity if that matters. Also the original port seemed like it wasn't working at first when we just tried plugging in our stuff, comcast had to come over and do something (not sure what went on with that, I was at work). Help please? [link] [comments] |
How can I connect a VOIP phone to my analog phone service? Posted: 29 Mar 2018 03:10 PM PDT I have analog telephone service in my home office that cannot be ported, or converted to VOIP. I have access to a spare computer that can run freepbx, and I have 2 VOIP phones I would like to replace my analog desk phones with. What kind of hardware hands the pbx my analog service? From my basic research; most devices are made to bridge analog phones into VOIP systems. Certainly, there must be a way to do the opposite? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Mar 2018 03:05 PM PDT Any fellow ATT uverse customers/slaves? I just want to find the most secure gateway/router (i.e. a router that asks user to enter access code as soon as you navigate to the configuration page). Currently using a Pace. Ive looked at other ATT gateway/router combos and havent been able to get a definitive answer. Wondering if there is anyone out there with a ATT gateway/router combo that can confirm their model requires access code immediately. Thanks in advance :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Mar 2018 02:31 PM PDT So it all started last week when all the sudden my internet connection went down. I reset my modem and router and nothing worked. my modems lights were all on suggesting I had an internet connection from ISP so I went and got an old Wi-Fi router and plugged it in to make sure my router hadn't died. The lan worked but Wi-Fi would not connect to the internet. so I went and bought a third router from Amazon and plugged it in today and neither Lan nor Wi-Fi works for that router. this seems very fishy to me as I've not had any issues with either of the first two routers for 4 years with Cincinnati Bell however I switched a month-and-a-half ago to Spectrum and now I have this issue. any suggestions or help you could provide would be great My first router was a Linksys and the router I just bought was a Netgear r6300 FYI [link] [comments] |
Which professional could I hire to fix this for me Posted: 29 Mar 2018 05:43 AM PDT I am not sure which professional would I need to hire to fix this stuff for me. While at it I would like to swap out a switch for a PoE switch, since I will probably be moving to VOIP phones and be adding IP cameras. [link] [comments] |
Whats the better internet modem? Posted: 29 Mar 2018 12:55 PM PDT Im trying to optimize internet in my house. We have two modems and I wasnt sure which is best and which I should be primarily using. We have the Orbi AC3000 (try-band home system) and also the Arris Surfboard. Really appreciate the help - thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Mar 2018 12:51 PM PDT I am wondering if anyone has advice or ideas on how to fix an issue I am experiencing. I am experiencing slow connection on my PS4 and Chromecast/phone at times. More often at night, but it has happened during the day. I live in a small 2 bedroom apartment. The apartment complex has 15 other units. Networking equipment is in the living room, in the entertainment center with my PS4 and Cable box. Chromecast is in the bedroom about 30-40 feet. The specific issue is that when I am playing on the PS4 and my wife is in the bedroom trying to watch tv using the Chromecast, we both experience lag to the point that it is almost impossible to watch or play. She will experience issues connecting her phone to the Chromecast or constant buffering. I will experience laggy movement in game and when I am in party chat, my friends can't hear me or hear every other word I say. The main devices I am having issues with: PS4 - Ethernet Chromcast - Wifi Other networked equipment includes: Philips Hue Hub - Ethernet (3 Hue Lights in the apartment) Samsung Smart TV - Ethernet 2 - Samsung Phones - Wifi 1 - Macbook Pro - Wifi My Network Equipment Modem - LINKSYS DPC3008 ADVANCED DOCSIS 3.0 CABLE MODEM Router - Asus AC3200 Tri-Band Gigabit WiFi Router Troubleshooting steps I have tried
I don't think the issue is bandwidth as I continue to get good download speeds. I don't think it is packet loss as I have yet to see significant packet loss. I feel like the issue is noise with the wifi, however, the PS4 is connected to my router via ethernet, so that doesn't really make sense. I considered disabling smart wifi, but don't feel like the issue is specific to wifi. I should be able to stream Netflix in one room over wifi and play on my PS4 in another room just fine with 150 down and 5 up. Hoping someone has some advise on how to fix this, it is very frustrating when gaming. [link] [comments] |
Packet loss on Wi-Fi - only on one computer Posted: 29 Mar 2018 06:50 AM PDT So I do a lot of League of Legends gaming and play on Wi-Fi since using ethernet involves me dragging a cable across the entire living room. So it unfortunately is not an option. However on Wi-Fi I sometimes get insane packet loss - as in the game stops responding to my actions for several seconds and then suddenly "explodes" with all the actions that occured during that time. I did some digging and the game does NOT have these problems on other computers using the same Wi-Fi. Tried 2 laptops and it works fine. Also my computer (a stationary) doesn't have the problem when using ethernet. Thus I feel like it must be my computer and probably my network adapter? I have an ASUS PCE-AC55BT. I now also tried updating my network adapter drivers and still have the problem. Are there any other ways to solve this that doesn't include buying something new? If not would you recommend a new network adapter or powerline? Hope you can help Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Help with converting phone line to ethernet Posted: 29 Mar 2018 12:44 PM PDT So i was just checking to see what cord my house has for phone lines and i noticed it has two cords connected to one adapter, since two phone lines have 8 wires total (4 each) would i be able to connect all 8 to an ethernet wall adapter?my phone wires https://imgur.com/gallery/TN6Zb [link] [comments] |
Upgraded To New Firmware, Now Internet is Slow as Shit Posted: 29 Mar 2018 12:04 PM PDT I just upgraded my firmware on my D'Link DIR-890L Router and now the internet is just slow to a crawl. Will a factory reset of the router make it go faster like it used to before? Or is the router done for? I can't seem to find a way to rollback to a previous firmware version. Do I need to call down a specialist to fix my issue? Because apparently even if you factory reset the router, the firmware doesn't go back to a previous version. What do I do? Are my internet speeds slow forever now unless I get a new router? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Mar 2018 11:59 AM PDT Traveling super here, trying to figure out how to hook up my linksys router to the WiFi network in an rv park. I'm a baby when it comes to this any help is awesome [link] [comments] |
Fake outbound address to go to local server connected to your network? Posted: 29 Mar 2018 02:57 AM PDT Sorry I don't think this belongs here but not sure where to ask, Apache maybe? My question is this: If I have a webserver running at some address eg. 192.168.1.### I want to fake an outbound address like somedomain.com and the network will intercept that request and direct it to the local device eg. 192.168.1.### I'm not sure what that's called when you do that. It would be from any device connected to the network trying to get to that same local endpoint. It just looks prettier for a local app than http://192.168.1.###/app-directory I don't want authentication so it's just an open thing only "secured-ish" by being on my home network. Building a new home - Which wiring standard makes the most sense right now? Posted: 29 Mar 2018 07:53 AM PDT This is shaping up to be our forever home and being very into home theater I know I want to future proof this as much as possible. Also, being very into IT I'm going to heavily wire the entire home so I want to be sensitive to cost as well. The plan I'm leaning towards is Cat7 throughout and conduit access via crawlspace or attic to the runs I would most want to upgrade down the road (ie. namely the home theater cabinet). None of the runs in the house are going to be over 100ft so Cat7a seems overkill. Curious on some outside opinions though. [link] [comments] |
[question] need openVPN client to query home DNS server just for one domain Posted: 29 Mar 2018 11:24 AM PDT i know this is a very strange use case, but hear me out. i run a personal dropbox hosted from my home connection at dropbox.domain.com which resolves to my home connection's WAN address. i access my dropbox through that domain from anywhere. when i'm at home, my home router/gateway DNS is set to give out the server's local address (eg. 10.1.1.2) when dropbox.domain.com is queried. the problem is, some of my devices are always connected to a third party VPN, so they're always querying the VPN provider DNS instead of the local DNS. how can i make this dropbox.domain.com resolve to a local address ONLY when i'm at home? i already considered the solution of disconnecting VPN when i get home, but that's a bit of a ham-fisted solution. i could also push my local DNS server to my openVPN client, but then ALL my DNS queries at home on the VPN devices would go through my ISP any ideas would be appreciated [link] [comments] |
Help troubleshooting painfully slow wireless speeds on my home network Posted: 29 Mar 2018 10:14 AM PDT I live in a fairly large (1500 sq. ft.) condo on a single floor, and this is my current network set-up: I have EnGenius AP connected to a Linksys router, with the wireless turned off, as well as a second D-Link router on the other side of the house with wireless on. There are ~10 devices on the network, both wired and wireless. My issue is that while wired internet speeds are >100 Mbps, the wireless signal is extremely inconsistent. Even my laptop, which is just two doors away from the AP, often has periods with speeds <5 Mbps. I have done some research on configuring the proper settings for the AP and routers, and everything looks fine on that end. Does anyone have any advice on how to troubleshoot or possible change my set-up to help this situation? [link] [comments] |

ASUS router app not showing all Wifi Posted: 29 Mar 2018 09:47 AM PDT Like the title says, I have a RT-AC88U and I have both a 2.4G and 5G network setup, both with different names and I have SmartConnect turned off. In the easy WiFi sharing section of the ASUS Router app, it only gives me the option to share the 2.4G, not the 5G It's a super minor issue, but one that's annoyed me lately. Anyone run into this and know how to troubleshoot? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
