Exes are getting removed but not the whole folder, never had an issue like that before

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 10:37 AM PST

    Hello guys,
Like a week ago I noticed I couldnt open rtf files anymore. I checked and the wordpad.exe was gone from the folder where it was (Have a look at this screen). The shortcut leads to an folder where there are a bunch of files that belong to wordpad, but the wordpad.exe is missing. The same problem again a few days ago with a self written program for ARGs, it was just a little console-application laying around in my documents. Today I had to experience the same shit again, Driverbooster.exe was missing, but the folder with all the files that belong to the exe are still there. None of these exes is in the bin neither. I checked if antivirus removed those files and it didnt. Anyone had ever a similar problem? Does someone know how to fix it?

Note that may be important: I had a look at the computermanagement and found a dll that seems weird, see here for a screen. In the same folder (C:/Windows) I found another exe wich seems weird, since I cant find anything online. The name is "e4edcfd0585f09e91f9fa54f5d0fc35f" (screen) and according to virustotal it is ident with 19109bf6336bf79c1f8b121c5836ddbe.exe and 75C95239A0377E8D5D6F81D07855C95C.EXE (the name doesnt seem to be hexa, even if it looks like), and I havent found anything to these exes online, too. Are those viruses? Is it possible that the disappearing of my exes is in a relationship with some worm or something like this?

Is there a media player that can play the multiple audio tracks within a video file?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 05:53 PM PST

The thing is I'm working with some video files that have multiple audio tracks within them (voices, background noise, sound effects, etc...) and whenever I play one I can't find an option to listen to all tracks at once, leaving me with just the voices, or the background noise, and so on.

Obviously I could just drag the file to a video editing software but I'm trying to avoid that inconvenience.

The local adapter does not support an important low energy controller state

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 07:03 PM PST

Hi there. I have a PC exclusively for VR on Oculus Rift, a headset heavily dependent on USB.

My PC (fresh out of the box) has random freezes in which anything connected to USB resets after about 5 seconds. This shuts off the Rift display in the "power cycle" of the USB bus.

Event Viewer has only one consistent entry at the time of these freeze-ups. It reads, "the local adapter does not support an important low energy controller state."

I've turned on (and off) "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" even though Oculus wants it unchecked to ensure the sensors, which are essentially webcams with UV filters, aren't powered down because Windows doesn't think they're being used.

I've been advised to uninstall the driver and reinstall it via Windows automagic Update. Hasn't helped.

I can't imagine a brand new PC bought today would have USB that doesn't support a low-power state.

Any idea how to fix this?

Frequent loss of window focus is making me lose my mind.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 06:38 PM PST

Every 5 seconds or so, whichever window I'm in loses focus for a second. I ran reliability monitor and found that something called service.exe stops working every few seconds. Here is the error:

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hours of googling have gotten me nowhere.

Cannot make start menu smaller on Windows 10

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 06:04 PM PST

I did a clean installation of Windows 10 today but I encountered a couple of problems. As you can see here I removed all of the icons that showed on the right side but it won't go away. As soon as I restart Windows Explorer or reboot the PC it goes back the way it looked before. The other problem I have is that the start menu is full of icons of apps that I've never used or downloaded with icons made of some strapped pattern.

    Edit: I'm running build 1709.

Wake up computer directly to the password screen?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 05:57 PM PST

Tried the Windows 10 subreddit, but thought I'd give it a shot here as well (hopefully, that's okay)

When I turn on/wake up my computer, it will always load me to this screen

However, I want to completely skip this screen when loading my computer to type my password

It's a mild inconvenience at best since it's just one click and you're at the password screen, but I wanted to know if I could skip the first click altogether. However my attempts to find a solution have sadly been null

Is there a Windows app for quickly switching my default web browser?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 09:32 AM PST

I'm looking for a desktop app that can (1) give me a system tray menu to quickly change the default web browser and/or (2) automatically set the default web browser based on whatever browser I've most recently used.

Basically, I'm looking for the Windows equivalent of Mac apps like Choosy and Default Browser.

I've searched around but found nothing on the Windows Store, and my web and reddit search results are full of articles on how to change the default browser through the Settings app or Control Panel.

Am I out of luck? Is there a technical reason this cannot be done?

So recently my pc had to go to a shop for a repair. The guy said it needed a windows 10 reinstall. So, I wanted to keep my files and he said that he could install an hdd. Well, my files were on my fast ssd and he reinstalled windows on the hdd. Is there anyway I could move the windows installation to the ssd without losing my files and moving them to the hdd?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 07:03 AM PST

Windows 10 decided to fail midway in its reset process[partition reset] and now i got no working nor repairable OS. I upgraded from Windows 7 a long time ago and I am literally lost at the moment how to fix that, since I cant get a hold of a simple thing as a ISO for Windows 10. All i see on my old laptop is a blankwebpage -_- where an ISO should supposedly reside.

ACPI bluescreen when installing Windows 7 on a moddern laptop

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 11:09 AM PST

I want to install Windows 7 on my i7 7700HQ Laptop (Its an XMG A517 with the latest avalible American Megatrands 1.05.08RTM bios) but I only end up with the 0x000000A5 ACPI blue screen even with UEFI disabled. I found a program that added all hotfixes and the latest drivers to the iso but I forgot the name of it. Unfortunately this also ended up in a blue screen because of some AMD drivers that were added it also allowed me to boot in UEFI mode.

Shortcut for "new snippet" in the snipping tool

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 01:00 AM PST

A while ago I saw a shortcut on reddit (Alt + Shift + 4 or something along the lines) which did not simply start the snippet tool but it started immediately in the "new snippet" mode and I could select the part of the screen needed and immediately paste that snippet to any program that I needed.

I tried several combinations and I can't find it again, does anyone know what I mean and what the combination was? Thanks!

Accidentally told my computer to not charge my phone..

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 05:54 AM PST

I plugged my phone into my computer to charge it. I got a pop-up, which I THOUGHT was asking me whether or not I wanted it to still charge my device if the laptop was only running on battery. I told it no (if I'm charging my phone, the computer would be plugged in). Now it won't charge my phone, and says it's an unrecognizable device, or something to that effect. I don't get the pop-up anymore and I can't find where this setting lives on my computer. Help?

    I'm running Windows 10 Pro.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 04:01 AM PST

I know this is very uncommon, but I have a Win Server 2016 iso and key. Since I only use my computer for school/work, no gaming, can I use it as a "normal OS"?
