Laptop screen is broken - How to fix?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 09:53 AM PST

Hey all! First time here, and I'm visiting because I'm kind of worried my laptop is soon gonna give out. Will back-up everything I haven't yet next week, but until then: does anybody know how I could fix this issue? I suspect it's a problem with a wire, as the screen goes black/white when the laptop moves in a certain way.

    Thanks in advance!

    Help me find laptop

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 02:13 PM PST

I'm looking for a laptop since my Dell Venue 11 Pro is dying a bit by now and has become pretty unreliable. I decided to buy a laptop for my upcoming birthday and am trying to find one using the weaknesses of my Dell. (If that makes sense at all). My "musts" are a DVD drive (really missed this) and a backlit keyboard.

I plan to use the laptop for everyday things along with some "casual" gaming. I usually somehow end up with games from like 2009, sometimes older so my worry is more likely "OMG is this going to even run?!" Rather than trying to run Darksouls 3 or something. A lot of storage space would also be handy and maybe something no too large, 10' is fine for me.

    TL;DR Absolutely need DVD drive

Prefable: Backlit keyboard, Ok for gaming, traditional trackpad/touchpad (same thing),

Nice but I'll live: Quite a bit of storage, not too big

Looking for a Chromebook or netbook. Suggestions please?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 08:01 AM PST

I'm in the market for a lightweight and portable laptop and am looking for a Chromebook or maybe a netbook. But probably whatever is the best price/what I get.

Pretty much all I need it for is web browsing, online classes, document editing, etc. Just basic laptop usage.

Any suggestions on a good laptop I should look at getting?

I'd like it to have sufficient storage(32gb or more. Probably 64gb), be snappy, have good build quality and a nice keyboard, great battery life.

Edit: How much storage do I actually need for a chromebook?

What is the point of my discrete gPU?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 01:38 PM PST

Just got a Dell Inspiron 5570 with Intel UHD 620 and Radeon 530 but looking at the benchmarks for those two I feel like the Radeon isn't much more than a tiny heater for my laptop. I realise it has it's own dedicated RAM but other than that, would there really be much noticeable performance difference?

How can i tell if a laptop has a TPM or not?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 12:25 PM PST

I am trying to purchase a laptop for work and a requirement is that it has a Trusted Platform Module chip on the board.

It is nearly impossible to actually find this information out. Closest I can get is as follows:

Acer Aspire 7 A715-71G-50WU (model NX.GP8EK.003) uses an Mobile Intel 175HM chipset to seat its i5-7300HQ CPU, and according to https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/platform-briefs/7th-generation-core-mobile-processor-iot-platform-brief.pdf that chipset SHOULD have TPM.

However in that brief, I don't see the i5-7300HQ mentioned at all, despite the fact it is talking about the same chipset (or so it would seem)

Can anyone help me out here?

Looking for a portable, outside-Friendly, mobile alternative with GPU to my MBP15.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 08:03 AM PST

    Hi all,

I have a Macobook Pro 2015 for home use, and I love it to bits, but it's not a great computer for on the go use.

    Reasons for that are:

    • proprietary, expensive charger
    • glossy display
    • a bit too large
    • has a big glowing "steal me" icon on it

So I'm looking for something that is a bit more outside-friendly. I. e. has a USB-C charger (or at least a cheap charger), is sturdy, has a matte display and is a bit lighter.

The closest thus far I found:

Thinkpad T480 (two drives, optional LTE, great battery life, USB-C charging, matte display, super sturdy, best keyboard out there, so ugly that nobody would bother stealing it). The only drawbacks are the less-than-awesome MX150 GPU and the price. Though honestly, when you guys don't know a more suitable solution, I'll get this one.

Do you happen to know any 13-14 inch laptops that have maybe a GTX1050 and would still fit my bill?

    Cheers!

Is there a way to set up an external display as the main display when using it with a laptop

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 11:36 AM PST

Hello, I currently have an external monitor setup, linked to my laptop via an HDMI cable. However, whenever I open an application it opens on the laptop display when they are being used simultaneously. Is there any way in which I can make the external display the 'main' display and have applications open up on it when I chose? Thanks!

HP Spectre, can't get wake-on-lan to work, help please

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 08:57 AM PST

Hello, bought the new spectre x360 (model 13-AE013DX) this year. I have the wake on lan settings setup for my network adapter (wireless ntwk) and also set up for the adapter in it's power properties. The bios does not seem to have a wake-on-lan setting. I've not been able to "wake" it up from sleep like my other PCs.

I have also purchased a thunderbolt dongle that will allow me to connect a wired network cable (plus other items) into the laptop. I went in to device manager and set the same wake setting in for the wired network. Still no luck waking it via magic packets.

Is there anything I can do?

    thank you!

HP specter 13 vs Macbook pro 13

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 08:29 AM PST

So the last time I posted here I asked about the Dell XPS 13, but now I have come to the conclusion that I could go for something a bit cheaper. So I've been thinking about the HP Spectre 13-v101no and the MacBook Pro 13 MPXQ2. But I'm not sure which one I pick :/ The hp spectre has a 7th gen i7 and a 512 gb ssd The macbook pro has a 7th gen i5 and a 128 gb ssd HP Spectre 13-v101no: ~1412 $ MacBook Pro 13 MPXQ2: ~1634 $

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'm buying in Denmark and my budget is around 10.000 dkk or ~1651 $

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 is stupid imo, so I'm not looking for that. Battery life isn't a main problem, but I would prefer a longer battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't want anything over 2,5 kg

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I prefer windows, but I don't find mac, to be that bad and it's something I could easily learn.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll be using it to edit videos and some photos and normal school work. Some light gaming also, like League.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? As said above, this computer is for school work, but light gaming like League would be nice.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'll most likely be using a mouse either way, so the touchpad isn't that big of a deal. Keyboard doesn't matter

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I work at the store were I'll buy the computer, so that's why I get the HP spectre cheaper. I've linked a comparison under here, though its in danish :) https://www.elgiganten.dk/INTERSHOP/web/WFS/store-elgigantenDK-Site/da_DK/-/DKK/ViewProductCompare-Start?products=HP13V101NO@store-elgigantenDK|MACBPMPXQ2DKA@store-elgigantenDK

Are there any stress benchmark programs I should test with the laptop, to see if everything is working correctly and I won't have any problems later after using it for few months?

Dell Inspiron 7000 Vs HP Envy

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 06:13 AM PST

I am looking to buy a light and compact laptop and saw videos of both machines.

To me the Inspiron 7000 series looks more compact than the envy with its thin bezels.

Has anyone seen both models close up? The Inspiron 7000 series seems to be a winner in that department

If the hardware was identical which machine would be the better buy?

P.S. I am not sure how the different versions (say 2016/2017) of Envy and Inspiron are identified. Can someone explain how?

Color dissociation issue, probably cable issue. Where can i find a replacement cable ?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 05:35 AM PST

    Hello !

A friend of mine (who isn't comfortable with english) has an issue with his laptop (Aspire V15 Nitro), the color are dissociated and the screen switch on and off and colors flicker when adjusting the screen.

We think it might be a cable issue, so we would like to replace it.

Unfortunately we can't find the reference for the cable, only for older version and we are not sure about the compatibility.

Would you happen to know where I can find the reference and where to buy it ?

    Thanks

Assistance needed with a laptop purchase [XPS 15]

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 12:24 AM PST

Thinking about purchasing an XPS 15 for uni (last me 2-3 years hopefully), It going to cost me $1100 AUD which is $860 USD for a XPS 15 with these specs:

    4K UHD Touch

    Intel i7 6700-HQ @ 2.6ghz

    32GB RAM

    1TB SSD

    Nvidia 960M

This unit has been used for 12 months previously, but is in good condition. I feel like this would be alot better to purchase then a refurb unit of the 9560 with a GTX 1060 for $2500 ($2000 USD) on dells website. My only concern relates to the 84whr battery with a 4k screen in 9550, anyone have experience with battery life on this setup?

    Need some opinions, thanks!

I'm just wondering if these are safe in the long term and if not which brand or type of dongle is best, I'm looking for one with usb-c, hdmi, and usb a ports like the one above.

    Laptop Recommendation Help

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 07:11 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, $800-1000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A balance of good battery life and specs is preferred.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? 7/10 Important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows & Linux

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. All of the above. (Autodesk Inventor, DaVinci Resolve, Photoshop, Minecraft)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Minecraft (Fancy, Smooth Lighting, Medium-High render distance @ > 60 fps); League of Legends (High @ > 120 fps)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like a good keyboard and reliable build quality. Don't care much for touch screens.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. A metal body would be nice, but I don't think I would sacrifice specs for it.
