I'm looking into buying a new laptop and my Ideapad from 2014 has such a small bottom bezel which is very nice because it's doesn't distract me at all. It has a very big top bezel but today's Lenovos and laptops in general have shifted to big bottom bezels and smaller top bezels. Why would that be? Does anyone have a reasonable explanation? I mind a big bottom bezel so off putting. I'd much rather have it at the top.

    XPS 13 or Swift 3?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 12:46 PM PST

I want an 8th gen i7 laptop and a fair bit of research has left me with these two choices.

I can get a refurbished XPS i7 for just a little more than a brand new Swift 3 i7.

Any experiences with these two laptops? Is the XPS generally considered worth the extra price over the Swift and other laptops?

    Many thanks!

    Automated message from Mac?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 11:26 AM PST

Basically I was looking stuff up for a research project and I was directed in a new tab to Apple support and an automated message started playing saying I infected my computer and if I close this tab that they will be forced to lock it.

Is this an actual thing? Or should I just disregard it. Never owned a Mac before this. Bought it off of someone who got done college last summer.

Experience with the Lenovo Yoga book?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 11:13 AM PST

Hello I'm thinking about getting myself the Lenovo Yoga Book with Windows.I prefer to write to paper but learn better from a display, which makes the Yoga Book a good Choice since it has this feature. So I wanted to ask if somebody owns a Yoga Book and has some experience. -How well works the pen? -How many sheets can I stack till the pen isn't digitally copying it anymore? -How is the Performance? -How is the Halo keyboard working for you? -How is it working with the small storage capacity?

Thanks for your help.I know you get nothing out of it but it would help me decide for or against it.

Acer Swift 1 - Why is everyone talking about it ?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 10:00 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I'm looking for a sub $350 laptop and every single review i've seen so far says that the Acer Swift 1 is one of (if not THE) best laptop in this category.

It certainly does not look bad, but what does he have over this model (Lenovo Ideapad 14s)

    https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-320s-14ikb-14-laptop-grey-10169170-pdt.html?intcmpid=display~RR

They roughly have the same price (in Europe at least), they both have 4GB of Ram, a 1920x1080p screen, a 128GB SSD etc...

The only difference I see, and this is a massive one according to me, is that the Acer has a Pentium n4200 where the Lenovo has the i3-7200u processor.

In terms of performance, they're not in the same league, the i3-7200u is miles ahead of the n4200.

So what exactly makes the Acer a better laptop ?

Recent laptops with Upgradable processors (Core-i5/i7)

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 08:34 AM PST

In the past, I usually purchase a mid-end laptops and then upgrade the processor/RAM/storage to SSD to extend the life of the machine after cheap replacement parts start to flood the market in several years.

I've been surveying laptops for a while now, and I've noticed the newer Core-i5/Core-i7 laptop processors are listed to have BGA sockets, which means they are soldered onto the motherboard itself making processor upgrade by myself pretty much impossible. I'm wondering if I'm misinformed or is that the trend of laptop hardware manufacturers now. If there are any laptop models with processor/RAM/storage that is DIY upgradable. Please do let me know.

    Thanks in advance.

Looking for a laptop around $1200 that ships to Indonesia

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 02:26 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$1200, Indonesia. Can buy through amazon if it ships.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'll be bringing it to my University, but as long as it's not extremely heavy and wide it'll be fine.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" if possible.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming and maybe some light programming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't have any specifics but I'd want to play some recent games with a decent fps.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard (preferably back-lit), fast usb port, and a good screen resolution (at least 1080p)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I think that's all, thank you.

    Deciding between multiple laptops

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 01:59 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Czech Republic, would prefer something around ~1000€/$1200 (incl. VAT); could go higher (see the end of the post) iff the slightly more expensive laptop outclasses everything price/performance ratio wise

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good price/performance ratio are obviously cool, but good battery life is important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Honestly? The smaller and lighter the better. I hate carrying around heavy stuff.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. The smaller the better. Probably 13" would be the sweet spot, since I wasn't even able to find anything in the 11" or 12" range that can fulfill the requirements.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I want to mostly do programming, gamedev and occasional gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Just CSGO and Dota; for CSGO, FPS over 100 is a must, for Dota, stable 60 would be fine. Settings basically don't matter, but would like to have a non-shitty resolution (since I will connect the laptop to external FullHD monitor for most of my work).

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Absolutely don't need optical drive; ThunderBolt 3 would be nice, but not a requirement. Good keyboard is always a plus.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Basically - I'm looking for reconfirmation of my choices, or pointing out I've missed a really nice laptop during my research.

First, to give a little bit of context for the intended usage - I have a desktop PC for gaming, which I'm using most of the time. However, few weekends a month, I'm away for the weekend, and would like to have an OK laptop with me. Also, would be nice to have an OK laptop to take with me on business trips. Also, I have a Nintendo Switch for gaming, so gaming usage is not really a priority, but being able to play CSGO/Dota occasionaly wouldn't hurt.

Currently I have an old ThinkPad E130, which works, but has some issues, like completly broken hinges (same bullshit as https://x121e.tumblr.com/) and being kinda slow. But it's ok for surfing the web and such. The laptop before was Thinkpad Edge 11, meaning I'm really really used to TrackPoints, and small laptops I can carry around.

The biggest issue (and the reason I want to upgrade) is the absence of OpenGL bigger than 4.0 due to Intel drivers. Since I like to develop OpenGL projects in my spare time, and do gamejams in Unity, I need at least some basic GPU performance, and would prefer to have another GPU than Intel-made, due to their horrible track record with OpenGL driver updates.

As for my choices, there was a few laptops in my selection process, but each has some drawbacks; after the thing with hinges happened to my current laptop (and was told warranty doesn't cover it), I was like "Lenovo never again", but reading about it, the newer models have different hinges, so maybe I can consider them as well. And I guess that in this price range, any brand can have a nice laptop, as well as bad. And if I went just by past fuckups, then something something Dell cat piss. So feel free to suggest any brand I guess.

Dell Inspiron 13z 5379 Basically, the only downside is the Intel GPU. Other than that, this would be my instant choice, and it's a shame they aren't made with the APU Ryzens. Also, NBD On-Site warranty is nice.

Dell XPS 13 Probably the best 13" laptop; absolutely stunning, and wouldn't even mind the extra price tag - but again, only has the Intel GPU. Again, NBD On-Site warranty is nice. And the battery life should be great? And the previous year model connectivity looks a little bit better than the 2018 version? :/

Dell XPS 15 Apprently, this one should come out in a month or two with the Intel+Vega chips, which would make it a nice choice, and probably wouldn't mind spending the extra over the budget, if it weren't so big. Shame they didn't announce 13" XPS with the Intel+Vega, would probably be instant choice.

ThinkPad E480 This one looks OK as well (with the RX 550), but I've seen only one review, and that one said it overheats during usage, and that fans are often spinning even in idle. Couldn't unfortunately find if it's just spinning but barely audible, or like hair dryer. Also, the battery life apparently isn't good? Also, a little too big for my taste, but still better than 15". And I can't find any RX 550 (mobile version) benchmarks.

Something completly different? The Xiaomi MacBook Air clone looks OK (I guess), and has MX150 (which I'm not sure how powerful it is, since I couldn't find any reasonable benchmarks), but is not available here. :/ Other than that, feel free to suggest anything that you think would fit my needs; and yes, my requirements are probably a little bit fucked up.

Weirdest thing just happened to me.......

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 02:44 AM PST

I have an Asus vivobook x556ua with an i7-7500u, 8 gigs of RAM a TB hard drive. Graphics is Intel hd 620 if it matters.....

Yesterday, my windows wouldn't boot, and it kept on going into automatic repair and diagnosis.

After trying all the options I could over in the menu, I settled that the only option was to reset my PC. But as I clicked on it, my PC just became unresponsive.

I went through the entire process, to achieve the same result.

I tried a few cmd things, such as sfc, dism and bootrec, nothing again.

I finally just downloaded the Windows Media creation tool on my other computer and loaded on a 16 gigabyte pen drive. I reinstallednstalled Windows, and everything seemed to be working fine.

Shortly after that my Windows during usage crashed. I then tried to boot my computer, only to see that it didn't recognize my hard disk, and my bios said that my hard disk slot was empty.

Figuring, in light of all the recent events, that my hard disk had failed, I had a live Ubuntu stick and booted off of that.

I used it for about an hour today, and noticed my hard disk LED, light up. I immidiatley opened my disks in Ubuntu and saw that my hard drive was detected. I tried to boot it but nothing would happen for a while and now I've booted back into it.

The strangest thing is ,windows says that the drive is healthy.

What could have happened in this situation and will it occur again ?

Just bought an XPS 15 (Canada) Specs and Price in text.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 05:53 PM PST

I know that it is likely that dell will have a new XPS 15 like they have with the 13, but looking at the new 13, I was not too impressed. Ive been waiting about a year to order an ultrabook, going from a 2014 MacBook Pro to this. (I will still also use the Pro, but plan for XPS15 as my main machine, and will be nice to have the option to play games)

    I ordered:

    16GB, DDR4, 2400MHz

    512GB PCIe Solid State Drive

    NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GTX 1050 with 4GB GDDR5

    15.6" 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) InfinityEdge touch display

    451-BBYB 97WHr, 6-cell Lithium Ion Battery (integrated)

580-AFYM Backlit Keyboard, with Fingerprint Reader

Subtotal: $2,729.99 Order Level Promotion: -$650.00 Shipping & Handling: $0.00 Environmental Disposal Fee: $1.00 PST: $0.00 GST: $0.00 HST: $270.53 Total Amount: $2,351.52

Keep in mind the is in Canadian $.

I felt like it was a good deal. I am low income but have been saving for awhile for this baby.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 12:59 AM PST

My windows laptop is slowly dying (slowing down and the hardwares coming apart) and so I'm looking at buying a new laptop It'll be used for gaming (league and overwatch), Photoshop and video editing, and general Uni work and Netflix I'd rather buy once cry once so haven't yet set a budget, but I would like this to last me several years. Not against switching over to Apple products if that makes a difference Thanks!

Looking for a replacement for my Zenbook Flip UX360. Also, has has anybody done a hinge replacement on that model?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 10:47 PM PST

    Previous laptop:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HZT6AR0/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I want to replace it, as the hinge broke after I dropped it... about 3 inches... while it was in my backpack. Dammit. Asus wants $510 to replace the hinge too, ridiculous. I removed the keyboard panel to look at the hinge and it looks like it snapped off inside, but I think there may also be something wrong with it on the other part of the hinge (like, the part attached to the screen) and I don't know how to "open" that. I'm not sure it's even possible. Has anyone done so?

Anyway, in case I don't fix it, I'm also looking for replacement recommendations. I mostly used the laptop for coding computational physics things (I actually run the code on a big server with lots of GPUs, so I don't need power in my laptop), writing LaTeX and Word documents, and some light goofing off (youtube etc). For reference, the Zenbook Flip has a pretty weak CPU (intel core m3-6Y30, 900 mhz) but it was enough for me. My top priorities in a replacement, starting from highest priority:

    • Being under $600, 650 at most. I have Amazon Prime, so ordering from there is a bonus
    • An SSD, at least 128GB (although I could rip the one out of my previous laptop if needed)
    • Good for carrying around in a backpack in busy trains and such constantly. That is to say: lightweight, thin, but also not too fragile. It will be jostled and shaken a bit. Not too big, the Zenbook is 13.3 inches and that's fine. A bit bigger is okay. No smaller.
    • Good battery life
    • Good keyboard feel/quality

Some things that I would like to have, but are just a bonus (not 100% necessary):

    • Backlit Keyboard
    • Trackpad/Mouse with actual buttons, not just "button zones" or the entire thing being a button like in the Zenbook Flip
    • A fanless/quiet design. The Zenbook Flip is basically silent, it has no fans. It can get a bit warm but since I only used it for basic tasks, it didn't get out of control.
    • Decent speaker quality, but it's not that important

    Things I don't care about:

    • Having Windows. I dual boot Ubuntu + Windows on the Zenbook and rarely use Windows. I don't need it, I use Windows on my gaming PC anyway. If it saves money, skip it
    • A 360 degree hinge. I got the Zenbook Flip because it was on sale when I got it, I don't really care about the hinge
    • A touch screen/Tablet type features (see above comment)
    • Webcam
    • Lots of drives, ports, etc. As long as it has a headphones slot, bluetooth, wifi, and a couple of USB ports that's enough. Don't need thunderbolt, firewire, DVD, floppy disc, 8-track, wax cylinder, betamax....

    Also, nothing less than 1920 x 1080.

    Thanks

Do I need to buy software for a refurbished MacBook Air?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 10:35 PM PST

I am not at all tech savvy. My old MacBook just died and I need to replace it quickly, as I'm a student.

One website mentioned that software like Microsoft Office is not typically included with refurbished laptops and can cost over $300. All I need are the basics. I only use my laptop for schoolwork, web browsing, and Netflix.

Trying to figure out if that is true, and if I may be better off buying a new laptop from a different company. I just need something very light on and the cheaper side.
