Posted: 21 Feb 2018 03:42 PM PST Okay so I have been asked to look into a BIOS Admin Password that was set on a new device. It's a Dell thin client (OptiPlex 3040) and the company uses SCCM to deploy through PXE. The problem is one of the things done when loading the image is that is flashes a version of the BIOS setup the way they want... and with there being an Admin (not a boot up) password this errors. Is there a way to clear this without sending it back to Dell as I am not sure they would cover this under warranty... Thanks [link] [comments]
Can i boot from the install iso MBR / legacy but install as uefi? Posted: 21 Feb 2018 03:49 PM PST I can never get my installation iso to boot on uefi mode, so I have to do it on legacy. However, this means that windows will only be bootable as legacy, unless I run a really slow and obscure command after installation, which took me like 3 hours to find last time and which I forget. Is there some way to boot the iso from mbr but specify for it to make the final product bootable from uefi? [link] [comments]

Windows 10 Pro BCD boot problem Posted: 21 Feb 2018 01:09 PM PST I started the pc and suddenly it wasn't booting because of a BCD error. It kept trying to auto repair itself but it never worked. tried recovery from USB, but it gives the same error as a reason for not booting from USB. I tried using all bootrec commands - i even renamed and rebult the bcd - I've had one succesful fixboot after renaming and rebuilding the bcd, but it did nothing. I also tried changing the active drive partition with diskpart, which seemed to have made things even harder because now win10 won't even run automatic repairs and BSOD like it was doing, It's just a black screen and I don't know if I can access advanced startup settings from here. The drives' files are fine, I could access them from advanced startup - it's the boot that's the problem, yet I've tried so many things and can't seem to fix it. [link] [comments]
Windows 10 is running like garbage on my slow internet connection (LTE) Posted: 21 Feb 2018 10:24 AM PST This is driving me crazy because when I try to search for this everything says "how to fix your slow internet in Windows 10" (most of which are garbage blog posts.... anyway rant off. I live in a county in Kentucky that has an abyssal track record with provider agreements. I live about 3 miles from a major interstate out a county road and my only option for internet is satellite or LTE. We use an LTE connection for internet and distribute it throughout the house via 802.11ac. Our internet sucks. I have two Win10 systems that my teenage boys use and they don't leave them on. When they turn them on (usually every couple of days) they run terribly and I know it has to do with the Windows Orchestrator service. It seems to me that Windows 10 doesn't deal well at all with slow internet backbones. I believe they designed this OS for heavy cloud usage. Has anyone experienced this? My poor kids can barely use their computers since moving to Win10. I'm about to just say screw it and install Linux Mint and virtualize anything they want to run on Windows... Posted: 21 Feb 2018 03:23 AM PST I've got a GigaByte Aero 15 recently. It comes with GTX 1060 and Intel 630. There were too many bloatware on the system and so the first thing I did was to Clean install Windows 10 on it. I've been noticing a very peculiar issue with this system. On Clicking right click on the desktop, or opening apps, or Opening new tabs on Firefox etc..the mouse stops responding for a second or two. This only happens on the laptop (when Intel HD 630 is powering the system) and on external display(When 1060 is powering the system) the system works flawlessly. This video might explain it better: link This also doesn't happen if uninstall the HD630 drivers and run the system on generic Windows driver. The only two conclusions I could come up with :
Let me know if there's an obvious thing I'm missing or I will replace the system. [link] [comments]
Random error, now two windows pop up on startup and disappear. Posted: 21 Feb 2018 03:38 PM PST I was using my HP pavilion (win10) last night, and it had an Error blue screen pop up. It said it was sending Windows some information about it (where can I find this information? It doesn't seem to be in Problem Reports). I didn't catch the error code, unfortunately. I was using the computer rather heavily, with way too much open, so that might be one source or problems. When it rebooted, two different windows popped up for a split second then disappeared, just long enough to see them, but not more than that. Even when restarting again, they popped up, yet trying to open task manager as fast as possible was still not enough. I'm worried about a virus. Those windows are strange. I did a quick scan with windows defender, with no results, a full scan is underway. What should I do? I tried to look online, couldn't find anything really. All the rest of my data is intact, it seems, because it just had normal reopening for firefox, my programs still seem to be installed. (since I force shut it down again, I lost that, but oh well.) edit: also now it's occasionally making the sound when you plug in a device for seemingly no reason, though my mouse does end up a little finnicky like that for some reason. Countdown before going to sleep Posted: 21 Feb 2018 12:46 PM PST Hello All. I remember someone posting a Windows app that shows a countdown timer before the PC goes to sleep. Basically it counts down as soon as the PC is left idle. Thanks to all replies. [link] [comments]
Posted: 21 Feb 2018 10:45 AM PST I have noticed the speed of my computer over the past 2 weeks deteriorate slightly but nothing that caused concern. However, for the past 2 days my Lenovo desktop cannot get past the start up screen (where you select a user and inset a password to log on). The computer is not registering the mouse or key board as being active so I cannot put the computer into safety mode. The touch screen also isn't working. It isn't frozen though as the time updates. The USB ports all work as I have tried using a phone charger in there. Any ideas on what might be the problem and how I can potentially solve this? [link] [comments]
Is there a tool for flattening directories? Posted: 21 Feb 2018 09:10 AM PST I have thousands of files with the structure: 2007/Ford/Mustang/Images/001.jpg, 002.jpg, etc I want to eliminate the Images folder and have: 2007/Ford/Mustang/001.jpg, 002.jpg, etc I am not a programmer and have tried many file managers but can't find one to do this. Google, forums, etc. show that it appears to be a common problem with no common solution. Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments]
Windows Server 2016 Local System Account Cannot Access Open Samba Share Posted: 21 Feb 2018 11:56 AM PST Moving from Windows Server 2012 to 2016 and windows services that read and write to a open samba share now cannot connect. I can connect from file explorer and read and write. Also the virtual directory in IIS returns 500 errors for all files inside this share. It seems to be a problem with 2016 only (tested on 2008 R2 and 2012). I enabled the "Enable insecure guest logins" GPO but still nothing. Looking at my samba logs I see that no username or password is sent to auth which is ok since it just uses the guest account then and responds with a successful authentication then the next thing windows closes the connection. Anyone use server 2016 and connect to a samba share as a system account? [link] [comments]
Posted: 21 Feb 2018 05:53 PM PST Whelp, I fat-fingered clicking a status bar icon today and somehow put my custom-built desktop INTO AIRPLANE MODE. My wireless mouse and keyboard stopped working entirely, and all I could think to do was reboot my computer. I mean, are you fucking kidding me? Airplane mode on a desktop? What the fuck Microsoft? Is there some way I can tell Windows that my i7 4790k 1080ti 32GB RAM PC isn't a fucking telephone? [link] [comments]
Auto rotate screen on windows 10 tablet Posted: 21 Feb 2018 08:22 AM PST So i had problems with my 2 in 1 tablet. Had to download the official ISO and use that image to restore ( official restore did not work ). Im still doing the updates to it but i realize the screen does not auto rotate on the tablet. I know this is due to using the image from microsoft's website and not the image recovery of the tablet. How can i fix this? [link] [comments]

USB Bluetooth dongle stops mouse from working at cold boot. Posted: 21 Feb 2018 01:07 PM PST Hello everyone, I've recently bought a USB Bluetooth dongle (Azio BTD-V401). It works flawlessly. But I've discovered after a LOT of investigation that it causes my mouse to be unresponsive at cold boot (not happening if I restart my computer). The mouse lights up and everything, but nothing happens when I move it/click it. Only thing that works is replugging the mouse. If I unplug the dongle before turning on the computer everything works fine. Only problem is, that I need to go all the way to the back of my computer to unplug every time I want to boot then, which doesn't seem to be ideal. Hopefully some of you smart people will be able to help me out of this problem. [link] [comments]

Posted: 21 Feb 2018 12:56 AM PST For the past year and a bit, I've backed up my computer every week onto a small 1TB external Hard Drive. I did it through Control Panel > System and Security > Backup and Restore (Windows 7). I never had any problems until a few weeks ago. I remember it being right after I installed and ran AVG (although I'm almost certain that was just a coincidence). I received an error message telling me the mounted backup was inaccessible. (Going through my search history, the error was 0x807800c5). I tried numerous fixes I found online but none of them seemed to work. Eventually, I decided that the drive had just died and went and got a new one. But, after trying the backup twice from 2 different USB ports, I'm still getting the same error. To be clear, I'm running Windows 10 and the model of Hard Drive is a Seagate Backup Slim+. Both HDDs were the same model. Is this a problem anyone has encountered? I couldn't really find any posts online that discussed the possibility of the computer being at fault (although I haven't looked particularly hard yet admittedly). Most posts recommend fixes for the drives which I do not believe are at fault. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Edit: The overwhelming concencus seems to be to use a third party program. I will be doing that now using Macrium and hoping that fixes the problem. Edit 2: I got Macrium. There's more options here than I understand but I'm not getting any error messages. So I guess I'll just learn the program [link] [comments]
Disabling Windows 10 Auto-Updates FOR GOOD Posted: 21 Feb 2018 05:31 PM PST I am extremely tired of this. I have followed all of the steps to disable these auto-updates, and somehow Microsoft keeps turning them back on. I want to know which websites I need to block to prevent auto-updates from being detected, and how to stop it from being sneakily turned back on. I DO NOT WANT TO HEAR WHY LEAVING AUTO-UPDATES ON IS A GOOD IDEA. I just don't. Keep it to yourself, if that's your message. I am disgusted that a company can keep tinkering with the settings of my computer when I tell it no. It's forcing me to reboot the damn thing tonight when I really cannot afford a reboot right now. I want them gone. Off. I've turned EVERYTHING off in the registery. I've turned all the processes off. They're all still off yet Microsoft is STILL backdooring me updates. This is worse than Malware. Screw Microsoft. PS: Again, no, I am absolutely not interested in your desire to scream how these should be left on. I want them off. That's all there is to it. You might as well be preaching the merits of wheat grass at McDonalds. [link] [comments]
Windows 7 fresh install stuck on installing updates Posted: 21 Feb 2018 10:50 AM PST Did a fresh install of windows 7 and on the desktop it is stuck on installing updates 20/20 for 3 hours now. I've hit stop installation but that doesn't seem to have done anything. [link] [comments] |
