Computer suddenly says Windows 10 not activated, after some research, I see that it's now Windows 10 Pro, instead of Home

Is there an update that can do that?

    Frozen Cursor Issue

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 07:22 PM PST

I have a toshiba laptop from about 3 or 4 years ago that runs on windows 8. Whenever I start my computer, it will work perfectly fine for about 3 or 4 minutes and then the cursor will freeze. I know the laptop itself hasn't frozen because I can still use keyboard commands to navigate the webpage was on, but I need to be able to use a mouse or trackpad for schoolwork. It doesn't seem to be triggered by any specific program or page running, it just freezes after a bit no matter what. I can log out with Ctrl+alt+del and as soon as it goes beach to the log in screen I can use the cursor again. I'm not incredibly tech savvy, but I've run malware bytes and it doesn't say I have any viruses or anything. I would really appreciate any help or suggestions, thanks!

Image size in Browsers on 4K display

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 11:21 AM PST

I have Dell XPS 9560 with a 4K display and the display scaling is set to 200%.

When opening a 3840x2160 image in a browser (literally any browser but I use Chrome), the image is shown fitted to screen.

However, if I click on the image (with the + looking glass), the image is stretched to 4x times the original size, outside the screen, with scrollbars appearing on all sides.

Is this the intended behaviour? Can I set the browser to show the image pixel-to-pixel so it fits the screen without the horizontal scrollbar?

    Example: Here's a screenshot from my 4k display showing a 4k wallpaper. https://imgur.com/cPb3ktK

When I click the on the image (to magnify it) it becomes like 2x or 4x bigger. https://imgur.com/X4LYKa7 (you see it zooms a lot more than it should)

So, if the wallpaper is the exact same resolution as my screen, why would it zoom a lot more than it needs to? If the scaling was alright, there wouldn't be bars at the bottom of the browser, because the image width is the same as my display's.

Another example which proves this issue is that when I open small images like 700x300 with text, the text isn't clear at all but blurry because Windows automatically largens the picture. I hope I explained myself right.

    Migrating account help needed, please.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 06:38 PM PST

    Hi guys,

I hope this is the right place to post this, but I have a tech issue regarding Windows.

When I originally set up my PC, I made one account and made it admin. I've since been told that this is a bad idea, and that for security I should use an account with regular permissions and type the admin password when I need it.

My question is, what is the best way to go about this while still having access to all of my files? Can I create another account and give it permission to view and use all of the admin account's files/apps, or will I need to move everything over?

I would really like to avoid moving everything as it will be terabytes worth of stuff and will be a huge pain.

Thanks very much for reading. <3

Unable to activate after installing new mobo

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 03:28 PM PST

I am currently using Windows10 Home edition and recently I changed my mobo to Z370 model. I tried to reactivate my windows license on activation menu, but I keep getting a message of 'Unable to reach windows activation servers.' I tried both 'change product key option' and 'I changed hardware on this device recently' from troubleshoot menu. Any suggestion to fix this issue?

Auto shut down without task scheduler

Fall creators update changed my search bar.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 07:47 PM PST

This may seem like a minor problem, but it really bothers me to see it. Originally my taskbar search box was dark grey so it matched the rest of the task bar. But after the update it's stuck as white. I can temporarily get it back to default grey by clicking the microphone, but it disappears when I click off. I can't find any customization option to get it back to normal.

Created Capture WIM with WDS, how to boot from it?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 08:13 AM PST

I have a PC without a functioning PXE so I have created a Capture boot image that produces a WIM file. Technet article doesn't seem to go beyond that to actually create the bootable WinPE with the WIM. Looking for a next step or a better article. Thanks in advance! TGIF.

Ultra VNC not displaying OpenGL programs after updates

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 06:01 AM PST

I use Ultra VNC to connect to a workstation and use graphic programs that use Open GL. Up until two weeks ago it was working fine for months, after an update though it stopped displaying the Open GL window. Everything else works fine. I've rolled back the updates and all graphic drivers are updated but no luck. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this? I'd like to avoid a reinstall...

Win 10 Home - Clean boot USB won't install to same SSD

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 02:38 PM PST

Sorry for formatting, I'm on mobile.

So I wanted to do a clean install as my PC has been crashing often since fall update. I downloaded the media tool and turned my 32 GB flashdrive into a install stick.

I boot up into USB, go about formatting my Kingston V300 SSD, try to change partition sizes (that fails) and install system on same C sized partition.

Now the problem starts: - PC restarted during install back to USB

    • i launched again and change boot order to the SSD

    • it launches good, hits the logo, starts "Preparing"

    • then it goes back to install from USB but (!) this time it tells me I cant install system to the SSD as it is not a GPT drive

    • it had no issues with the drive for 4 years

    • try format and install files a 3rd time, i get error 0xcd8fa9a0 while creating the partition

Now I have 120 GB of unused SSD where my Windows was, 2 small system partitions with 350 and 450 mb, and my 2 other drives i dont want to format on fear of same error.

I really could use some help to get this install running.

    I appreciate any tipps.

Trying to upgrade to Windows 10, keep getting the same error message.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 02:28 PM PST

Note: I already tried r/techsupport, didn't get a single answer.

I am on Windows 8, running smoothly on a 2-year-old machine. I tried upgrading to Windows 10 using the free assistant they provide. However, as soon as it gets done installing I get the error code 0x80070005. Now I looked up the code to find out I probably need to change my windows update settings, but I can't change them due to the window freezing everytime I try to get into the Update settings or any sub-category.

I tried sfc /scannow, did not accomplish anything, except for telling me it can't fix any of my issues. I will post the error code at the end of this.

I would completely wipe my system and install windows 8 freshly, however, my original windows disc is in Germany and I won't be able to get access to it until after December 31st, which is when the offer ends.

Oh, and I also did not notice any "Symptoms" after taking these steps, except for my computer being extremely slow for a short time.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks in advance.

(I really don't know a whole lot about computers, hope this website works for the error file I got) https://paste.ofcode.org/ak3srJhVbBX9hMCpEQ7kpe

    My system specs:

    Intel i7-4770

    8 GB RAM

    64-Bit Windows 8.1

    Nvidia GTX 760 Graphics Card

I know it is pretty outdated but I love my PC and would rather not buy a new one.

    Windows 10 v1709 Error Code 0x81000203

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 06:01 AM PST

Last night I spent a couple hours working on my wife's Dell XPS 13 (9350) (year old) taking Kaspersky off. After a pretty successful uninstall I figured it would be a good idea to create a restore point for her. When I went to System Properties > System Protection, an error would pop up that gave me the above code. After two hours of googling I found the best remedy here. The only problem is that it did not work for me whatsoever. The error code basically is preventing system restore to scan my drives. I ran the checkdsk thingy in cmdprompt and it did not show any errors. It honestly isn't and wasn't worth my time to pursue it anymore because the wife won't notice and honestly doesn't care. This is the version of Windows that came with her laptop and it's gone through two major Windows updates, an install and uninstall of a security suite, etc.

This is her personal/work computer so she basically uses it for remote access, spreadsheets, etc. She doesn't want to mess with reformatting because it doesn't bother her one bit that she doesn't have a restore point created. I figure just let it be.

Is this a hardware issue or a software/registry issue that got messed up somehow? Do you think a "Reset this PC" or clean install will remedy the issue?

Linux Subsystem after Fall Update Dev Environment

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 03:48 PM PST

Hey there, what I really want is to have a "good enough" *nix development environment on my Windows machine. After the Fall update, I feel like we can get pretty damn close.

First, I have installed Ubuntu (with zsh as the default shell) and have VSCode running with "ubuntu.exe" as default.

I then made a symbolic link from Linux to a Windows directory so I can edit the files using VS Code while running them in the Ubuntu "container".

Downsides is you can only have one instance of Ubuntu running, so you can have multiple windows/applications relying on this container (at least that I've noticed)

Overall, this kind of feels sloppy but it does kind of work. I was wondering if anyone has a similar, more fined tuned environment? I'm thinking maybe even messing with Docker a little.

(I also really like Hyper Terminal, but the colors all appear fucked up)

Use a laptop as a keyboard for Xbox One?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 03:43 PM PST

I wasnt sure where to post this, but I think this would be the most appropriate place.

I want to use my laptop as a keyboard so I can use kbm on Xbox One. Is that possible? I know Xbox now supports KBM, so if an application makes it so that my laptop is only seen as an input device, could this work?

Scroll bars and files dragged from folders are huge! Help! Win10

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 03:24 PM PST

About a week ago I noticed that scroll bars in several programs have gotten gigantic. Very wide. Additionally, if I drag a file icon in an explorer window it is gigantic, like 1/4 the screen height. I've tried all of the desktop personallization settings and I have not found the cause. This moment, for example, Chrome has a big-ass scroll bar. Help? Thanks.

Windows 8.1 "Metro" app for receiving SMS by internal LTE modem?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 03:39 AM PST

Hello, I have small Intel Atom tablet with Windows 8.1 x64 and LTE modem, looking for Windows 8.1 Metro/Modern app for sending/receiving SMS by internal LTE modem and my SIM card. I know there are apps that use external internet services for sending SMS but this is not what I am looking for. Basically an app similar to Messaging app on Windows phone.

The Windows Runtime (Metro) API supports it just can't find any app built on top of that in Store.
