need Some help buying a laptop

    Posted: 28 Dec 2017 10:26 AM PST

Hey guys, hopefully you will be able to help me. I am posting this for a Brazilian friend who doesn't use reddit often, and he has some built in fear of posting in english. This is his post:

I live in Brazil and i'll be traveling to the US by the end of January, and I need help to decide if I buy a notebook here in Brazil or in the US.

First option: Dell Inspiron 14 7000 (7460) [around 1200 USD].

    http://www.dell.com/br/p/inspiron-14-7460-laptop/pd?oc=cai7460u1852539br&model_id=inspiron-14-7460-laptop

The link above is in portuguese, so I will resume the main points about the laptop:

    Intel® Core™ i7-7500U
    GTX 940MX 4GB ddr5
    16GB, DDR4, 2400MHz
    SSD 128GB + HDD 1TB
14" Full HD IPS screen with truelife

Second option: The Razer Blade 14'' with 512GB [around 1700 USD?].

I'm assuming that everyone knows this laptop so I will save some time here.

So what do I need? I already have a pretty good desktop at home, that basically runs every game at 60 fps on ultra, so this is not going to be my main gaming device. I use my notebook at work, and being portable is a must, that's why the 14" screen. But I also want to be able to play some casual games, like CSGO, DOTA 2 and maybe a Witcher 3 at low settings?!

    Dell Pros:

    Cheaper
I can pay it in 10 months with no interest
Comes with 2 year warranty + support at home

    Dell Cons:

    It's not a razer
The 940mx is not famous for being a good dgpu...

    Razer Pros:

It comes with a 1060 dgpu
    It's a razer
It will be a great opportunity to buy it since I'll be traveling to the US.

    Razer Cons:

I'll have to pay it at full, although I have the money it will be a burden. It doesn't have local assistance, any problem I'll have to ship it to the US which means 1 to 2 months without a laptop
its significantly more expensive, with the difference I could easily upgrade my desktop and would still have some money left.
There is a, let's say, 50/50 chance that I will be taxed upon arrival in the customs office.

    What would you guys do?

Good laptop for browsing, movies, and watching Twitch?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2017 09:28 AM PST

I have a 2013 MacBook Pro that's starting to get slow and was interested in maybe getting a new laptop. I wouldn't be playing any games so I assume I just need a laptop with a good CPU but I don't know much about laptops. I would like a nice screen but don't know if laptops are similar to monitors where they have different panels like TN, IPS, VA, etc. I also don't know how a 4k screen would work either when it comes to downscaling. For the most part I use 1080p but if I got a 4k screen would it be similar to gaming monitors where the mapping would look blurrier when watching 720p or 1080p videos on a 4k screen.

Gigabyte Aero 15x Does support Windows Precision drivers

    Posted: 28 Dec 2017 01:08 PM PST

    Hi all,

I just got my Aero 15x and I read a lot of reviews that said it did not support all the windows gestures. That's true out of the box, but if you install the ELAN Windows Precision drivers it works and even the general usage is night and day.

Didn't really know where else to share this, so I thought I'd make a post. I know it was something I was concerned with when making my purchase, so I wanted to spread the word.

Is HP Pavilion 15-CD040WM good for gaming?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2017 12:54 PM PST

I've stumbled on this laptop while searching through Ebay and I am interested to buy it, but no matter the seller claims it's a "gaming" laptop, I am not convinced, even by it's specifications.

    CPU: AMD Quad-Core A12-9720P APU 2.70GHz (up to 3.60 GHz) GPU: AMD Radeon™ R7 Graphics 4 GB RAM: 12GB DDR4-1866 SDRAM HDD: 1TB 5400 rpm SATA

From above it looks good, but I don't know.. there's something off to me about it. Probably because it's design doesn't scream "GAMER" to me, but I would like to hear from an expert first before deciding to buy it.

Basically all I want to know is will I be able to run and play games like Alien: Isolation, Resident Evil 7, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Batman: Arkham Knight etc. etc. at HIGH graphics settings and how much FPS will I have. Battery duration, display size, and the general look is not a problem for me.

Are there any 14" or smaller laptops with i7 8th gen and Nvidia 1050?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2017 12:26 PM PST

I currently have a Lenovo Y410p and I really like the 14" size and the 755m dedicated GPU. However, it's starting to fail, and I want another laptop that is around the same size with an i7 and a solid GPU.

I know there are several 14" laptops with mx150, but I would really like a 1050 without going up to 15.6". Are there any laptops that fit this requirement, or am I forced to either get a bigger screen or weaker GPU?

End of my rope with dell xPS 13, power through or return?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2017 10:02 AM PST

Tl:dr I've received two brand new units from Dell, and neither of them worked. Need advice on whether to keep pouring time into getting a working laptop from them or just return and get a different computer.

I ordered a Dell XPS 13 9360 a couple months ago after doing a ton of research. I even waited until the 8th gen i7 was rolled out. All the blogs, Reddit, YouTube, and "Best Laptops of 2017" lists agreed that this one is one of the best on the market and would suit my needs: small, light, powerful, long battery life, great for work and light gaming. (I've been using a 2010 MacBook for years because it's usually really hard for me to buy things for myself.)

    • The first unit I received started having problems immediately. After several hours on the phone and online with Dell Customer Service, they determined it had hardware problems. So I was sent a new one.

    • The second unit, the one I'm writing this on, restarts randomly. It doesn't matter what I'm doing: if I have dozens of tabs and windows open and I'm watching Netflix, if I have one tab open on Google, if I've just started up and nothing is even open yet--doesn't matter, it restarts. (It restarted twice while I was writing this goddamn post!)

    • I spent several more hours on email, chat, phone and Twitter with Dell Customer Service trying to resolve this. They played phone-tag with me, they pointlessly updated drivers on two separate occasions insisting that would solve the problem; when it didn't, I was back where I started. Finally, they told me the only way to ensure I would have a working laptop would be to send it in to them for repairs--which would take up to 12 days after they received it. (I work remotely and bought this to work on, so that was a huge issue for me, but so was all this back-and-forth so I bit the bullet and sent it in. I figured that if I could just get this computer working, it'd be worth it, because it really is a great machine--aside from the fucking restarts).

    • I just got it back on Friday. They replaced the io/daughter board. It's STILL restarting at random.

I'm honestly at my wit's end here. I want this laptop, it's an excellent machine. But having it restart on me in the middle of work is not something I can live with. I've poured so much time into trying to get a functioning unit, it makes me a little sick to think about--especially since I'm already so averse to big ticket purchases for myself. I went back into research mode to see if there was a better laptop yet, but this one still tops all the lists.

I don't know what to do. Send back for repairs when their original repairs did nothing? Insist on another brand new unit when I've already received two lemons? If you have recommendations for similar quality for around the same price ($1200), I'd be interested. My own research keeps pulling up Dell XPS -_-

When are they likely to release a new model? Do they have a rough schedule?

Best Laptop for Opening Unknown Documents?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2017 08:35 AM PST

    Hello!

I am planning to pick up freelance jobs in editing and proofreading and need a new laptop to help me with the job.

My main concern is getting a secure laptop. As I will be required to open all sorts of documents (.doc, .txt, .rtf, .pdf, etc.) from unknown people internationally, I want to minimize my exposure to viruses and phishing scams. Under normal circumstances, I know not to open unknown attachments and not to click on suspicious links, but I need to for this job.

Does it even matter what kind of laptop I select, as long as I invest in strong security software? Does the laptop itself (processor, OS, etc) play any role?

    Thoughts appreciated!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Up to $800, buying in USA. Price is most important for me; the cheaper the better.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Not picky at all! This will really just be a laptop that sits immobile on my desk for document editing and review.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight doesn't matter; a slim/sleek body is nice!

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. The job requires "PC", since it is most compatible across the board. Even if it doesn't work out with this specific job, I do want a "PC" (namely Windows) since they are simple and most popular.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Bigger is nice; no specific preference.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Would love to do video and photo editing in the future on this laptop.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not gaming at all on this laptop.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No specific requirements. Backlit keyboard would be nice. Ideally will have SD card slot and CD/ROM drive.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. THANKS!

Trying to find a powerful, beastly laptop for trading stocks and slight gaming while traveling overseas

    Posted: 28 Dec 2017 02:23 AM PST

i currently have an i7 and 1080 on desktop.. trying to find a good laptop for travel and 'on the go'.

I would rather spend a few extra hundred bucks getting something truly powerful with a bigger screen, vs saving money and having to run games on low settings. i play pubg/overwatch/csgo

having said that i dont want to pay that extra premium price for just a small bit of extra power... or to run on 'EPIC settings'. its hard to find this mix but, maybe you guys know? thanks in advance.

id also like to have multi monitor support for the laptop bc i have a few extra at home.

edit: the gamer in me wants this.. https://www.amazon.com/Eluktronics-P650HS-G-Premium-G-SYNC-Gaming/dp/B01MR4L5V3/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1508362531&sr=1-1&keywords=Eluktronics+P650HS-G+Premium+VR+Ready+G-SYNC

but to spend 2,000 on something when truly 'travel' twice a year...and only need the laptop while travelling for occasional checkups and emergencies. wont be playing overwatch for 10hours while on vaca.. and at home i have a beast setup. for 700 im sure i can get something in between, which can at least RUN overwatch on medium with no skipping?

[£500-£600 UK] Looking for a versatile laptop for Programming/Web Development and a bit of light gaming.

    Posted: 27 Dec 2017 11:46 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Between £500 - £600 in the uk. But open paying a bit more if there are slightly better options exceeding my budget a little.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Overall decent "bang for my buck" system with decent battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not that important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 Pro, if unavailable will upgrade to it. Plan on dual booting and/or use a virtual machine.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 12-15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Will use it for programming and web development. May do some photo/video editing in the future but not a priority. Hopefully can handle triple-a titles like The Witcher 3

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? If it can run triple-a titles better than my PS4 Pro (say, 1080p, mid-high settings at a stable 60fps, at this budget, then it would be perfect. But gaming isn't a priority with this system, I have a PS4 to do that. However, if you can find one that does just that at a slightly higher price or even meets my budget, I'll be willing to pay. And I'll hook it up to my 1080p monitor.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good all rounder that gets the job done, I'm not too fussy.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. All in all, I'm just looking for a decent laptop that could get me through my studies and then some. In terms of gaming, at my budget, I don't think I'll find one that could run better than my PS4 pro, but that doesn't rule out the possibility of some of you finding a system that could. Gaming is more an afterthought as I'm more than fine with my PS4.

I feel like instead of getting a system with gaming in mind, I should just get a normal laptop and put my head down with my studies. And afterwards I should save up and build a proper gaming rig. That's the most logical thing to do, especially for someone in my circumstance as I, nor my family have much money at the moment. And, if I want to game, I already have a ps4 anyway. The money I could save buying this laptop could even go towards buying components for a proper gaming pc that I'd like to build soon. So, mainly I'm looking for something that I can use to put my head down and finish uni... and then focus on gaming.

I hope you can provide a lot of options for me, if possible. Thanks for taking the time to read and I look forward to your suggestions. I hope I didn't ramble on. :)

I am considering on buying this laptop because I am going to college soon for Computer Science. I am not looking to spend over 1000. I also want to have it to do some gaming on. Mostly things like PUBG and Overwatch. I don't need anything too extreme like being able to play call of duty on ultra settings. Is this a decent Laptop for the price to have for college + gaming?

Is Microcenter online okay to order from?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2017 08:06 PM PST

I'm thinking of getting the Acer Swift 3 SF314-52-517Z that's in the wiki but I've never order from Microcenter before. I see their return policy is 15 days but you have to pay shipping and insure it. That's ok I guess if there aren't any other problems specific to laptops.

I've looked at other places like Amazon but that only has 3rd party sellers selling it. Newegg sells it but it's more expensive and I'm not sure what their policy is on laptops. Walmart.com sells it but is also more expensive + sales tax. Who would be best to buy from?
