Found a clearence HP Pavilion x360 2 in 1 and picked it up. It has 15.6" fhd touchscreen, 8gb RAM, i5-7200U, 1tb hard drive, one year of office... I'm in college and right now I have a Thinkpad 13 with i5-6200U, 16gb RAM, 256gb SSD, fhd non touch. I'm not sure what the best plan of action is. If I can't upgrade the x360 to an SSD I'm not really interested but what do you think?

    Dell XPS 13: i7-8550U vs i5-8250U

    Posted: 02 Dec 2017 10:46 AM PST

Hey guys, I'm in the process of buying a new laptop (something that will last me the rest of my time at college and hopefully some time after) and have narrowed my search down to two of the new Dell XPS 13s. These have just gone on sale, knocking 20% of the price of off each of them.

The two laptops I am deciding between are the i5-8250U, and the i7-8550U. I've researched and found that as expected the 8550 outperforms the 8250, but only marginally.

I'm studying computer science, so I don't expect my college-related work to be anything more intensive than a beefy ide. I do play video games on occasion on my laptop, but never anything very power-hungry (I stick to starcraft and other low resource-intensive games).

My questions is whether or not it is worth me going for the i7 chip over the i5, or whether I would never notice a difference between the two. The longer I can keep this laptop alive, the better. So if the i7 would lead to a significantly longer life then that would make it a pretty strong competitor to the i5 in my books.

    Thanks! :)

I've had the Acer Swift 3 for a week. Weird high pitched sound coming from the charging port even during normal tasks started today?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2017 01:37 PM PST

I didn't have any issues over the past week. Sometimes there would be a light mechanical whirring sound, nothing bad. But today it started doing this high pitched sound that gets stronger if I put my ear closer to the charging port, but I can still hear it and it bothers me a lot when I'm in normal position.

How do I turn this off? I'm also still able to make an exchange, but I also don't want it to happen with another one, so what should I do?

So this has me bugging for the past days and I can't figure out what this is. So this laptop is featured in a k-drama I have been binge-ing and had me questioned in awe, what is this device.

So in this pics, seems like it's Samsung version of Yoga Business laptops with an S-Pen. If anybody has any articles about this exact laptop please reply.

    HP ProBook 440/430 G5 vs Lenovo E470

    Posted: 02 Dec 2017 06:56 AM PST

Hi. I'm looking into these two types of laptops, and wondering whether any of you have any opinion on the touchpad and keyboard of these? Moving away from a Macbook Air 13" 2013, so would love the input devices to be superb/as good.

Usage is primarily going to be programming, thus I'm valuing the keyboard and touchpad more than the generation difference in Intel CPUs. Not sure if there are any major differences between their IPS panels, but if there are any please tell me.

    Buying help

    Posted: 02 Dec 2017 10:30 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: -USA. Budget is flexible, up to about 500 dollars.-

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -I already have a 15.6 inch laptop, but portability and convenience is a concern with the size. I want a durable laptop that is small enough and portable enough to bring to class(I'm a college student and the lecture hall desks are tiny). Additionally, battery life is an equally important factor. I am ambivalent about 2 in 1 laptops. Finally, a touchscreen would be nice but is not completely necessary.-

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? -Fairly important. I desire portability. Size is more important to me than weight is.-

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -Prefer Windows-

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -something in the 11-13 inch range, would ultimately prefer 12 inches-

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -Mainly microsoft office. Would be great if it could run TERA online on lowest graphics but is not a must. Spotify and video streaming as well-

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -See above. Mainly lowest setting games, though all this is considered an optional section for me-

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -Important: Battery life, good build quality, SD card or microSD card reader. Optional: HDMI, upgradeable storage or RAM, optical drive

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -I do not want a chromebook or Windows 10 S. Thanks for all the help everyone!!-

    Ram difficulties (All help appreciated)

    Posted: 02 Dec 2017 09:46 AM PST

So I was recently given the y700 "gaming laptop", and it rocks a gtx 960m, 8gb ram, and i5 6300, and an intel card. I´ve noticed on my ram info, that the computer is using 7.8 out of my 8.0 ram. I tried the msconfig fix but it did nothing. Some say the intel card is taking up .2 but others don´t. Not sure what to do!

    All help Appreciated, Thanks! :)

Any way to get laptop vinyl skins for HP Pavilion 17?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2017 04:08 AM PST

I'm in the UK. I know a 17 inch laptop is an unusual form factor, but the lid is a simple flat, rounded rectangle with a slight indent in the HP logo. Is there a place that sells a variety of cheap vinyl skins for the Pavilion 17? I don't mind leaving the sides or back unwrapped.

HP x360 Fans Noise/running at different speeds

    Posted: 02 Dec 2017 07:52 AM PST

Just received spectre x360 AE012dx from Bestbuy. Coil whine right out of the box. The BIOS update seems to have fixed it. I lost the cooling fan after BIOS update but another reboot seems to have fixed it. Updated chipset drivers and windows 10.

I really like the laptop but it seems to have a weird fan noise. It starts whenever fan comes on. Another problem is that Fan 1 is running at close to 4000rpm but Fan 2 is at 100rpm. Is that normal?

I am wondering if I should ask for a replacement from BB.

I did not have that problem with the Alienware 15r3 that i returned recently (heating and other problems) is it something im not seeing? both laptops had identical specs except the screen on the Alieware was ips 60 hz.

    Thunderbolt 3 peripherals availability/compatability

    Posted: 02 Dec 2017 04:27 AM PST

I'm considering to buy the Lenovo yoga 920; it has 2 TB3 ports. Being new to Thunderbolt I'm wondering what possible limitations that can be expected encountered on selecting peripherals. Specifically: * USB-C compatability: is it possible to connect any type of USB-C devices? * Legacy USB compatibility: what about my old devices (USB 2 & 3), are there convenient adapter cables that will allow connecting those? And will they work? * is it generally possible to connect & use any 3rd party Thunderbolt 3 device, or are there restrictions to be aware of? * is a hub of some kind needed to connect external monitors? And what about cabled ethernet?

    Thanks!

Need help , battery charger not working

    Posted: 02 Dec 2017 02:14 AM PST

So about a week ago , the battery charger on my Acer Aspire ES 15 started malfunctioning . I would plug it in and it simply wouldn't start charging . I would just plug it out and try again for a few times and then it would start charging . It seems super random . But as of today , it stopped charging altogether . I tried every plug in the house , so I know its the battery charger that's in problem . Can anyone in here help with this issue?

P.S Please do try to simplify a little bit cause I'm not really educated in laptops nor in English

P.S #2 I still have the purchase warrant that lasts for 2 years , can I refund the laptop since its the hardwares fault ?

    Thanks in advance !
