I have unlimited data and no tethering on my sprint plan. What happens if I turn my galaxy s7 edge into a hotspot anyway?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 08:25 PM PST

I used to have an iphone on the same plan and for whatever reason, the hotspot option was completely missing from the phones software. That's fine. I recently upgraded to a droid though and the hotspot option is there.

Like stated, I have unlimited data and no tethering. But if I turn it on, what happens? Does it just give an error? Will it autobill me some ridiculous amount of money? Did I find some weird glitch that will let me have free unlimited tethering?

Is there an app or a tweak that would allow me to change langauge settings (different from my system settings) for an app individually?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 06:50 PM PST

I ask because my English system setup, when combined with various Korean apps makes for some garbled text and awkward translations. I would like to control language settings for individual apps.

Two-headed hydra - BSOD plus missing memos on Galaxy S5, HELP!

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 08:10 PM PST

So, I'm relatively new to Android devices and I'm hoping you guys can help me resolve this enormously frustrating situation...

My current device is a Samsung Galaxy S5 I purchased refurbished about one year ago, and everything was going fine until yesterday when the screen suddenly went black after I unplugged it from charge. After a little googling,I found out that this is a relatively common problem for the S5, however nearly all the fixes require some kind of pre-emptive measures like rooting or enabling screen mirroring, etc, all of which are impossible to do now for obvious reasons.

Some details: Everything else is functional except the screen itself including the touchscreen functionality, buttons, lights, sounds, and cell service. I was able to blind key-in my passcode so that I could do a manual backup when I realized that I was able to grab everything EXCEPT FOR MY MEMOS!

So I have two problems - first, I have no idea how to proceed in troubleshooting the BSOD problem, I tried booting in safe mode to no avail, and it seems that a factory reset is my only resort. But even that doesn't seem to be doable without being able to locate and press the correct options in the menu sequence that appears on the screen. Lol.

And second, before I do the factory reset I'd like to backup my memos somehow. I have some moderately important data in there. Not life-or-death stuff but writing that I cannot duplicate and even some important academic notes for my thesis that I thought of on the fly and wanted to jot down. What is the default partition in which this is saved and how can I access it? I have another nearly identical device so if there is an internal memory card separate from the SD card I could possibly switch it over and access the memos that way, but I have no idea where that would be or if I would have to take apart the phone to get at it. Honestly, I would be willing to risk destroying this phone physically and just purchasing a new one to get at this data.

Is there any possible way to scrape or transfer the memo data, or backup to SD, in the midst of the BSOD failure? If there is a relatively simple sequence I could probably pull it off blind, I remember where the memo app is on the screen. And additionally, how can I factory reset or further troubleshoot the BSOD problem itself without relying on onboard sequences?

Please help me guys, I'm stuck and extremely frustrated by this situation. I know I will definitely not be using the stock memo app in the future.

    Gmail Widget broken?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 08:04 PM PST

About a week and a half ago my Gmail Widget (the 3x3 one) stopped working. It's blank with a logo and "Tap to set up" message in it. I tap, set it up, it seems to work for a short while, and then resets back to "Tap to set up", usually after a sleep. If I delete the widget, recreate a new one, it works for a bit and then after waking the phone up some short time later, it wants me to "Tap to set up" again.

The account it is set to display in the widget is a work Exchange account, and it has properly displayed this account since I originally set it up, over a year ago. (I have 3 other actual gmail addresses, that I normally access through Inbox). The app is still working -- when I get a new email, it notifies me of the message and I can open the app and access the account just fine. I just can't see it in the widget, either because the widget doesn't update (that's happened once) or more likely the widget has reset back to "tap to set up".

I'm running Android 8.0.0 on a Nexus 5x (with the November 5, 2017 security patch). Google Fi is my carrier. I'm running the latest version of the Gmail app (7.11.5.176568039.release, updated on the 22nd). Gmail is listed in the battery optimization screen as "Not optimized", because I have it set to check email in the background. Other than that, I can't think of any other changes or settings I have may have changed.

    Any ideas on fixing this?

    Back with Android, now what?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 07:58 PM PST

I have an Android phone for the first time in a while, the last one I had being an old Droid that was still on Gingerbread. Now I have a Moto G5 Plus on Cricket (for the time being anyway). What are the best apps I should be looking at to maximize my experience with this phone? Thanks in advance!

Nougat's Doze has rendered Android useless to me

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 04:09 PM PST

This got removed from r/Android where I think it was more relevant. It's mostly "why would Google do this?" with one technical question at the end. Anyway:

My previous Android phones had all been running Android 6.0 and older. Then I went on an adventure in iOS land which ended with me wanting to return to Android. I attempted to do so with a Nokia 6 running Nougat, only to find that Googles "refinements" of Doze have crippled the OS to the point where it's inferior to iOS for my needs.

The most glaring issue is that email notifications for my preferred mail app (Outlook) get disabled after a couple of hours. I've also confirmed this behavior in the Gmail app. If the phone hasn't been used in a while, there are no mail notifications and then they all flood in as soon as you turn on the screen. Disabling Battery Optimization for the apps does not solve the problem. Was utterly dumbfounded to discover that this is apparently by design:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/6s9vth/gmail_sync_email_pushing_is_intermittent/dofq98f/

So that means Gmail on iOS notifies better than Gmail on Google's own OS. Are they out of their minds?

Same problem with reminders. What is the point of reminder notifications if they only sound/appear when you turn on the screen.

This may be happening with Google Calendar too, but I haven't tested that one thoroughly yet. Have missed some important events.

I'm still in a state of disbelief that this has actually happened. It seems that there is nothing I can do to get reliable mail notifications from Outlook/Gmail, and that alone is pretty much a deal-breaker. Is there anything that can be done about Google Assistant/reminders? Is there a cryptically-named system app that I can disable Battery Optimization on for that?

Notifications not showing up until I open various apps

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 05:25 PM PST

I don't know what I need to fix to make this problem stop happening but some apps straight up won't do notifications when I need them very badly

    • Some alarm apps won't work until I open them after a restart
    • Hangouts
    • Line
    • Discord
    • G Calendar
    • 10+ different games
    • Text messages

OP3T on android Oreo. It's not like it's EVERY time, it's just some of these I can't have fail (alarms, texts, calendar, hangouts). What do I need to do to make sure they show their notifications?

HTC m7 (sprint) isn't good at picking signals up anymore?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 06:07 PM PST

I've had an HTC m7 (sprint) for around 3.5 years now. Recently I've noticed it's really bad at picking up signals. I frequently don't have service, even in large cities, and I sometimes have to reset my phone. This issue has been ongoing for about 7 months, and I believe 2 relatives on my plan with the same phone model have a similar issue.

My question is, what's going on? Is it my provider, or my phone?

"To start Android, enter your password" after update. But i have no password.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 04:21 PM PST

I have had a Blu Life One X2 for a week. I got a Wireless Update notification and installed the update (the update seemed sketchy but after doing some research it seems like the standard way Blu sends updates so I installed it - can anyone else confirm?). After the update, I've been stuck on "To start Android, enter your password". The thing is, I've never set a password on the phone. I set a 4 digit pin and a fingerprint, and that's all I've been using to get into it previously. I tried the pin, my google password, a "default_password" try (as I read somewhere that that is used if a password is not set), and a few other guesses. It now says I have 6 more attempts before the phone is wiped. I'd rather not go through the setup process again. Any ideas how I can log in?

Edit: I've also tried contacting Blu at 1 (877) 602-8762, but they say to call back during their regular business hours between 9:30am - 12:00am. I just got home from work and my current time is well within that range.

What could use high amounts of RAM? Specific examples?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 04:05 PM PST

I bought my Dad a new phone and realized it comes with 6GB of RAM, yes 6GB, not 4. This is absurd, besides driving the price of RAM up with the production needed for things like this, what exactly could take advantage of this?

Calendar sync problems, wont show events

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 05:36 PM PST

Hey all, I've been trying to get my phone to sync up with a public calendar but for some reason it wont work. I can access everything perfectly find from the browser, and the name of the calendar all shows up in my phone, so its sort-of half way synced. However, none of the events show up, and if I go into settings>accounts and try to sync there, it sits for a second then an error pops up: "Sync is currently experiencing problems, it will be back shortly". The most common fix I've seen is with two-factor authentication, but if I can access the calendar and everything works fine in browser, then the same should be true for the apps.

    Thanks

Blu Life One X2 just updated, now I'm being asked "to start android enter your password" not working correctly. Please help.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 02:29 PM PST

Got a Blu Software update notice for my phone. Went ahead and did it and saw the usual android update screens. This thread explains a near identical issue. I tried my phone pin, my gmail password, and it keeps telling me it's incorrect. Now the password screen says if it enter the password incorrectly 5 more times my device will be reset. What do I do?

So should I not delete apps on Recent Apps by myself?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 04:50 PM PST

I've always learned in the years past that I have to constantly take care of recent apps to keep my phone speedy, but reading some posts on r/android suggest otherwise. So is it better to let them be and let the software take care of it?I have an S8+ btw.

The best way to go about Contacts

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 01:31 PM PST

HI guys, it's always something with my contacts. I think by default they were saved in the past to my SIM card, then I added the email addresses and I believe they now go to my primary gmail account. Sometimes I enter a contact and right away I cannot find it. I also did some factory resets and I just cannot find a bunch of them anymore.

What's the best way to go about the contacts? What's that only safe place to store them to avoid losing them or having duplicates?

    How do you do it?

Thanks. My first Q here so I hope I don't break any rules.

Restoring Private App Data and then Unrooting

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 02:35 PM PST

My Pixel 1 has been having some issues lately (awful battery, random reboots). The phone is rooted and I have all the app/data backed up.

I am going to be wiping my phone and starting fresh. I need to root my phone to restore data like my Android Authenticator keys. Would it be possible to wipe the phone, root, restore selected apps/data, and then unroot my phone but still keeping all the app/data on it?

I was a dumbass and installed a virus. Help?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 10:42 AM PST

So I was a dumbass and have installed a virus APK on my android. It was pretty obvious because the chrome app kept opening shit (thanks for opening escorts when I was at work)... I did some research and AVG found an app that had no name (I thought an app I downloaded online failed to install), I took away all it permissions but I think its stopping me from uninstalling it. I also cant give mcafe permissions. Is my best bet here to just do a clean install on the phone? I dont care about losing stuff but it will be annoying if this makes it worse...

In device adminstrators I see there is an adminstrator with no name, I cant deactivate that admin or add admin to the anti virus apps...

A twonky folder appeared on my phone and I don't know why?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 03:35 PM PST

What is this about? I didn't even know what Twonky is before this happened. I don't have it on my computer. A folder appeared on my Samsung Galaxy S7 called "twonky" and in it was a thumbnail of an album art. Just a single one.

Is my security compromised? I somebody accessing the files on my phone?

I'll add this, I did recently use Screen Mirroring with a Samsung TV via Smart View but only briefly. Did this create the folder?

    I'm very confused.
