Connecting to my home wifi network on my iMac makes wifi unstable within 30 minutes. Disabling iMac's wifi immediately fixes the problem.

    Posted: 25 Nov 2017 05:22 PM PST

    Greetings,

I'm trying to troubleshoot a home wifi/networking issue. I have a TP-Link AC1750 router and an Arris modem (from Spectrum). Recently, I've been experiencing increased wireless network instability (super slow speeds or just not working at times). I power cycled everything with no improvement, so I decided to do a firmware update on the router.

Since then, there's been some strange behavior between the router and my iMac. When I connect to the wireless network on my iMac, the wifi quits working within about 30 minutes. When this happens, the little globe-looking light on the router (which TP-Link indicates is a internet connection light) turns from green to orange.

As soon as I turn off the wifi on my iMac, the internet light goes from orange to green and the wifi connection is totally normal throughout the house. Meanwhile, other devices can stay on the wifi network for many hours without any issues. I have numerous devices connected via wifi with no issue. It seems somehow the iMac is screwing things up.

I did a full restore on the router and it did not improve this issue. Same results.

How can I approach fixing this? Thanks.

UPDATE 1: I just hardwired the iMac to the router and it still killed my network. Unplugging the LAN cable immediately resolved the issue.

UPDATE 2: It seems that while I'm connected to a VPN on the iMac, everything stays connected and there's no issues. Disabling the VPN quickly causes the wifi network to quit working.

TL;DR - Connecting to my wireless network on my iMac makes the wifi unstable within about 30 minutes. Disabling wifi on the same iMac immediately restores wifi connectivity for other wireless devices in the house.

Games are 60 FPS but appear choppy

    Posted: 25 Nov 2017 09:08 PM PST

Speccy PSU is Corsair CX750M V2

    Video

Whenever I'm playing a game and turn off Vsync my FPS will be a constant 60, but occasionally the game will start to look like its frame dropping, while showing no changes in FPS. This has started ever since I upgraded my CPU and motherboard. Also when I'm scrolling on Chrome it seems choppy as well.

How can I create a usb recovery drive that will reset the state of a machine if I plug it in and reboot the machine? Kids laptop for Xmas - fully expecting him to brick it a few times

    Posted: 25 Nov 2017 12:54 PM PST

Ideally I'd like to set the laptop up, remove bloatware, perform updates and then do a ghost/image of the entire drive to a usb. Then give it to him for Xmas, when he ends up doing something silly on it, I can just stick the usb drive in and reboot the machine, giving me an option to wipe and load that image.

I know this is possible, just out of the game so looking for software suggestions?

    Many thanks

Disabling and then enabling ethernet. This usually solves it, but it requires me to do it a few times. Most of the time, I need to click on "diagnose" to force it to reset the ethernet connection. I already set the power saving options to the highest settings possible.

Laptop doesn't recognize Blu Ray discs anymore?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2017 06:06 PM PST

    Hello friends,

So I recently got a movie on Blu Ray and was super hyped to watch it with my friend, but when I plopped it in the optical drive my computer said nothing was there.

Now I have an ASUS A53S K53SD laptop, and at this point it's pretty old. It came with Windows 7 but I upgraded to 10 when Microsoft was pushing that free upgrade awhile back. Also, though I doubt this is it, I took a spill and my laptop took the brunt of it. It makes weird noises now and again, but in the 3 years post-spill I haven't had any issues, but I felt it was worth mentioning. ALSO ALSO, I tried using a regular DVD to make sure that the optical drive wasn't screwed up because of said spill, but it recognizes CD's. Watched a whole movie no problem, so unless a Blu Ray optical drive has 2 parts to it, I don't think the reader is the issue.

Hopefully you guys can help me cause I'm pretty thoroughly weirded out. It certainly isn't the end of the world, but having a Blu Ray player was always kind of nice, even though I didn't use it that much. Plus I paid for it, so there's that.

Anyways, really hope you guys can help me out here. Also, if this isn't the right subreddit please let me know and I'll delete it. Thanks Everyone!

EDIT: Thanks to Synux I now realize that I was wrong. Although the model is a A53S in actuality it is a K53SD. Link to the vendor website here

Also it says the Blu Ray is optional, but I do have it. The icon is on the side, and I've watched BR movies on it. Sorry for the confusion, if you want more proof I'll take a picture for you all.

Idiot kid just turned my (Win 10) Screen Black and White by mashing the keyboard. How do I change it back?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2017 10:57 PM PST

I tired googling the issue (obviously) and every Win 10 guide says "In the Control Panel window, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display"

My issue is that "Display" is not an option for me after Appearance and Themes.

Does anyone know what settings she accessed to make everything Black and White and how I can change it back? Restarting did not fix it.

Laptop HDD is dying, need help with finding a compatible replacement.

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 03:43 AM PST

Hello! The hard drive on my computer has been getting slower, so I ran the built-in HP diagnostics on my hardware. Turns out my HDD failed the DST test, which I have learned from extensive googling means that it is dying and needs to be replaced.

Fine, I think, it is a slow drive and I would like to upgrade to an SSD anyway. Problem is that I have no idea what drives are compatible with my computer, nor have I found out from searching the web. The SSD I have been eyeing is the Samsung 850 EVO. How do I know if this drive is compatible with my laptop?

Help downloading part of a site using WinHTTrack

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 03:32 AM PST

I'm trying to download the Guide section of developer.android.com which starts at below url.

    https://developer.android.com/guide/index.html

I want to download all HTML file from that path including those in the subdirectories. It musn't download those from the upper levels or other directories at the same subdirectory levels, and it mustn't download anything if the url contains ?hl= or &hl=. e.g.

    https://developer.android.com/guide/index.html?hl=de

Other file types such as CSS, JS, and images, use the same rules.

Currently, I using below filter for the Scan Rules.

    +*.css +*.js +*.json +*.xml +*.gif +*.jpg +*.png +*.svg +*.jar +*.zip -*[\?,\&]hl=*

But WinHTTrack always download HTML files with ?hl= in their URL (like the one mentioned above). For the mentioned (unwanted) URL for example, they came from LINK HTML tags, not A HTML tags.

How can I prevent such URLs from being downloaded?

Below is the winprofile.ini file used for downloading.

    mp4 file timeline corrupt

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 03:25 AM PST

    Hi,

Recorded a video which is about 2 hours long. In any video player it only shows 5 minutes in the timeline down the bottom, once the 5 minutes is up though, it just continues playing. I cannot skip further in, but every program I have tried happily allows me to continue watching.

Is there a program that can fix this? Video seems to work fine, I just cant skip in.

    Thanks

Keyboards refuse to work after boot

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 03:25 AM PST

I recently went to Egypt for a week. Upon return, I plugged my computer in and loaded everything up. However, my keyboard wasn't working. It's done this before so I figured it was a hardware issue due to being left untouched in the cold for a week.

I decided to try it on a laptop, and lo and behold it worked perfectly. So I ruled out hardware failure and decided the drivers must be at fault. I updated, uninstalled, and the reinstalled fresh drivers. Nothing changed

When I boot my PC up, the keyboard will do nothing, no lights or any signs of life at all. If I plug my keyboard in shortly after turning the PC on, it will light up 10% of the time, and some keys will work 5% of the time. However after Windows loads, the keyboard is unresponsive even if it is kit up.

I've tried reinstalling drivers, I've tried using another keyboard, I've tried a system restore, I even managed to press F2 and get into the bios, but I couldn't see anything there that would help me.

I've tried unplugging my mouse and seeing if anything changes, but its the same. My mouse works perfectly, and I've tried all peripherals in all combinations on both USB2 and USB3 ports.

I'm at a complete loss of what the issue is, but I suspect it may be motherboard related. I don't have a disc or a key to do a fresh Windows install, but I would like to give that a try.

If anyone has any hint of a solution I will be eternally grateful. Cheers.

    No audio devices

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 03:20 AM PST

So i was cleaning out my pc from all my dust and i disconnected the pin that went from my front hub to the motherboard and i cleaned it out plugged it back in all is fine even the front led's that indicate the pc being on work. But no audio devices. When i plugged in my headphones, earphones, microphones, basically any audio device it wouldn't appear in my playback/recording devices. I am using Windows 7 (Ultimate edition) if you care. And yes i have tried getting new drivers unplugging and plugging it back in. I have tried every single possible driver update because i was not sure if it was real-tek or other. I need help asap because i work with video editing as my hobby and i kinda do it for money so i can get my own stuff and not have my parents buy stuff for me. So if you know how to help leave a reply :)

Help needed to install Ricoh printer/scanner

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 03:16 AM PST

I need to install software of a scanner/printer Ricoh Aficio SP 3510SF on my laptop (Windows 7).

Simply connecting the device to my laptop doesn't work (message that Windows cannot install it).

I have the original drivers installation CD. My dvd-drive is not operating. Copying the data from the CD on another computer onto an external hard disk to install on my laptop doesn't seem to work for some reason.

Installing software from the internet ( http://support.ricoh.com/bb/html/dr_ut_e/re1/model/sp35s/sp35s.htm ) comes with a zipped exe file. When I unzip it with 7-zip (I don't have winzip), the unzipped folder doesn't seem to include an installation file.

    Any suggestions please? Thanks

Windows can detect my footpedals but IL-2: Battle for Stalingrad can't

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 03:06 AM PST

    Hi guys,

I play IL-2 Battle for Stalingrad with a SpeedLink Black Widow joystick.

I decided that I'd like to map my rudder keys to some foot pedals, so I went ahead and bought a Sven Turbo Racer steering wheel. The wheel plugs into the PC via a USB connection, while the pedals are attached to the wheel.

When I open up the 'game controllers' interface on Windows, it can detect both the joystick (listed under 'USB Game Controllers') and the pedals (listed under 'PC Game Controller'). I have successfully set up Euro Truck Simulator to use the wheel and pedals.

I am having absolutely no luck, however, getting IL-2 Battle for Stalingrad to recognise the pedals. It registers key presses on the steering wheel, but trying to bind the pedals amounts to nothing.

I'm at a loss - is there anything I can do?

All I can think to try is look for some program that might make some virtual device that can take input from the pedals and convert them into a key press or something? Does anything like that exist?

Any help would be most appreciated!

Primary harddrive (SSD) for Windows OS slowly filling up

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 02:59 AM PST

    Hello,

My computer has 2 hard disks: a relatively small SSD (C:) for my windows 7 operating system, and a 1TB regular hard drive (E:) for everything else.

I download and install only on my secondary (E:) hard drive. However, I'm noticing that my SSD is slowly filling up. My AppData folder takes about 10GB of file space, and I presume that's what's taking up more and more space.

Is there a way to safely move the AppData folder to my E: drive, and configure my system that future application will get saved on my E: drive, instead of on the SSD?

Any other tips for safely cleaning up my SSD?

    Thanks.

UPDATE: just removed all but the last system restore points, and freed up about 15GB, which is definitely a nice start. I re-set the allocated space for system restore to about 5GB - that should be enough, right?

    Monitor Display Issue

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 02:41 AM PST

Note: I had posted my issue weeks back (the case was still open prior to deleting moments ago) but I now have new information to better assess the possible problem(s).

I use two monitors, one with HDMI, the other VGA. Following the Fall Creator's Update for Windows 10, the HDMI monitor is forced into a dark color scheme. The colors seem blended, with certain lines and shapes not appearing at all.

    Example: https://imgur.com/a/0mcux

I have attempted to adjust the settings on the monitor and through Display Settings on the compute but can't come close to the original color scheme.

New Information: Today, I re-installed a game (Paladins by Hi-Rez) and after being prompted with the common "Are you sure you want this program to make changes to your computer?" and the monitors briefly flashing off and on, the regular colors returned to the second monitor. Once I turned it off for the night, then back on this morning, the darker scheme returned. With this new information, is there anyway to assess what the problem is?

For anyone checking, thank you for your time.
