Samsung has really stepped up their game.

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 01:24 PM PST

Have you noticed how Samsung is bringing Oreo to the S6?

This makes me think. They used to be the worst OEM about updates. Now?

Let's compare them to OnePlus, the manufacturer that's always mentioned positively with updates. The OP2 was launched 3 months after the s6, its latest update? Marshmallow, that's it.

Just remember, the s6 is 4 months shy of being 3 years old. It launched with Android 5.0 and it's getting 8.0, 4 major android versions.

If you asked me a year ago wether I would recommend OnePlus or Samsung, I'd have looked down to my OP3 and I would have recommended it. Now? I'm not sure.

The Oreo update for the S8 is about to be realeased, which is quick, Samsung Experience is way better than the slow and laggy TouchWiz ever was and their camera is still really good. Because the prices drop quickly they are quite an affordable choice too, if you are not an extreme early adopter.

Props to Samsung for also supporting their older flagship and not just dropping support as soon as their latest Model launches!

Thoughts and Impressions after a weekend with the Pixel 2 XL (and comparison to Note 8 and iPhone X)

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 06:34 PM PST

I did the same thing for the iphone X a little while ago. One person on the thread said he'd like to see me write about the Pixel 2 XL - and by chance I switched to a pixel 2 XL so I figured I would write about it too.

    Background

I've been an Android user since the HTC Evo 4G, have also had HTC Evo 3D, Galaxy Nexus, HTC one M7, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, OnePlus 3, Note 8, and iPhone X (for a week)

Why would I switch from a phone with better hardware and more features and basically everything to a Pixel 2 XL? Well I'll explain later but I switched to TMobile this past week - took advantage of the BOGO for my other 2 lines and for myself I bought a Pixel 2 XL and sold the Note 8.

I have the Panda version, I didn't like it when it was announced but it grew on me.

    Pixel 2 XL Specific

    • The build quality of this phone is very good. It's solid, sturdy. Buttons are clicky, it's just a well made phone. That said, I'd rather have a metal power button than the plastic orange one on my Panda version - but it's not the biggest deal. I'd also rather not have a camera bump but it is what it is.

    • That said, this phone feels like plastic. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but the coating will scratch easier than an anodized aluminum finish. Honestly they probably should have just made the phone out of plastic and gave it wireless charging.

    • I expected the coating that Google put over the body would add a lot of grippiness to it. Why else do it? Not so, this thing is actually pretty slippery. Not as much as a metal finish maybe - but I think more so than the note I'm worried about dropping it.

    • Fingerprint reader is great, no issue there

    • The cameras are incredible, both of them. I need some Instagram style filters for selfies here because the front cam picks up so much detail that it makes me look ugly af. The rear cam is incredible too, ofc. Portrait mode is a very unrealistic effect, but it looks good and is fun. I'm not a huge camera buff and I'd be satisfied with either this or the note one, they're both phenomenal - but overall camera package the pixel is as good as it gets.

    • Fastest Android phone I've used ever. Animations are smooth, no chop anywhere. The Pixel 2 is the most productive I've been on a phone, no doubt. Everything happens quickly. Main reason it was appealing to me over the Note, that plus software updates - I'm on 8.1 DP1 currently

    • Yea the squeeze feature is cool and works well, if you're into that sort of thing. It feels good but yea I don't really care. I'd rather have narrower side bezels if it was the trade off.

    • Music on always on display is coo, works well - not something I really care about but it's cool to have.

    • I just love looking at this phone (panda version) - it's unique and different, reminds me of the Nexus 6P successor I always wanted - I refer to it as the 6PP

    Display

Yea yea display is all the hype and hate with this phone.

    • Blue shift yea it happens. Every 2 XL I've seen in stores , in person they all have it. Doesn't bother me at all during use, just that I can notice it. I don't really notice it while using it unless I'm looking for it, even when I'm tilting the phone it's very slight and doesn't obscure anything.

    • Graininess - this one probably varies more by unit, I notice some on mine in certain conditions and brightness levels - again, not something that bothers me during use I have to be in specific lighting conditions and specifically look for it.

    • Black crush - haven't noticed any with my usage patterns.

Overall, display issues are overblown imo. Yea you shouldn't get them with a $900 phone but they don't bother me particularly during use I don't even notice it.

    • Main thing that does bother me about the display is things look washed out, stock launcher makes things look even more washed out but they're still washed out looking. Yea I know people may say "an you just don't like realistic colors srgb blah" Well, when I set the note 8 to srgb mode - a more accurate representation of srgb I might add - things don't look washed out.

    Vs Note 8

    • Note 8 display blows this one away

    • Cameras are close enough where it shouldn't really be a deciding factor, bigger difference with the selfie cams.

    • Fingerprint reader is great on the pixel, sucks to use on the note

    • I really wish they got wireless charging in this thing - it really sucks not having it now

    • Pixel 2 XL has a smaller display but it feels much more unwieldy than the gigantic note 8. This phone is thicc. The note 8 is easier to type on one handed because of these big bezels

    • Note is a smooth, productive device, but Pixel 2 is on a whole nother level when it comes.to day to day use.

    • I really dig picture in picture on Oreo , but I'm sure the note will get it in January. I know the note has pop up videos but I mean Google maps.and YouTube go picture in picture here and they just work fantastic.

    • the speakers are great on pixel 2, but I'd rather have a headphone jack than great speakers. I don't use analog headphones too often but once in awhile I have a time where I want to use them.

    • Battery life is about equal to me, Pixel 2 XL is minimally better than the note I think - but I'd rather have the note battery and wireless charging so

    • I miss the pressure sensitive home button, quite a lot actually.

    • Always on display is a mixed bag. New notifications are better on pixel 2, I like double tap anywhere to wake versus only on the home button (on the note). But it needs more on the pixel 2. I can see what song is playing in the background on the always on display, but I can't see what song is playing on my phone? Or change the track either from the AOD. I'd also like to see battery percentage there.

    Vs. iPhone X

    • iPhone X isn't worth $1000+tax

    • This phone isn't worth $850+tax, but I'd rather have this than the iPhone at the price

    Conclusion

I'm sure I'm missing things and may add more later, I don't have as much to say here as the iPhone post I made because these are both Android and fairly similar in more ways.

Would I recommend this over the note 8? Probably not, no.

I love the uniqueness of this panda phone, and for me personally I appreciate the incredibly smooth software and high productivity. I like playing around with the latest Android APIs through dev previews and such (as a developer).

So for me, yea I'm preferring the Pixel 2 XL and think I'm happier with it. For the average person I'd spend the money on the note (or something else maybe), you just get so much more for the money.

Overall it's an impressive device, it rivals the iPhone X smoothness - and like the note, does everything faster and is more productive. But it's faster and equally smooth, unlike the note.

I may add more and what not and I'm sure I missed stuff, I jotted this out pretty quickly but that's the summary of how I feel about it.

Why do large manufacturers have region specific models?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 11:27 AM PST

Both Samsung and LG, two major players on the Android market make many different phones of the same line in different countries.

In the USA the S8 has a Snapdragon 835 while it has a Exynos 8895 in Europe.

The LG G6 has wireless charging in the USA, quad DAC and 64gb memory in East Asia and none of that in Europe.

Why can't they just make a global model like some manufacturers do?

If all future Samsung phones use Exynos processors and support project treble they could remove the final weak spot in their competition with Apple, immediate and long-term update support.

    Posted: 25 Nov 2017 10:17 PM PST

When people choose an iPhone over a Samsung one what's the biggest remaining advantages is immediate updates and long-term support for past devices. People think of pixels has a better competition to the iPhone for this very reason.

Seeing the S6 get Android Oreo proves that Samsung would like to support its devices for longer. If there was any way in the future to dump Qualcomm and snapdragon, they would gain a huge advantage.

Imagine a Samsung flagship being supported as long as an iPhone 5 with all your updates from day one.

Edit: It is being pointed out that Project Treble makes the choice of processor in this equation irrelevant since updates will no longer require support from chip drivers. In which case we can push for longer support from all phone makers.

HMD Nokia 8 (6GB): Quick Android Oreo review

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 09:55 AM PST

Why hasn't anyone gotten the original, 32-bit Nexus 5 Google Camera with HDR+ ported to the relatively new and crippled 32-bit Moto phones?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 08:20 PM PST

The camera still works great on the Nexus 5 (Snapdragon 800, 32-bit). I've seen devs working on 64-bit ROMs for the Moto G5 line and it seems the only true benefit is Google's magic HDR+ kinda works...but why not mod the 32-bit Google camera APK for the Nexus 5 instead, without any major hackery needed for the base ROM? Seems like maybe it's just a little-known fact that the Nexus 5 did actually have HDR+ working great on a 32-bit platform.

What's holding back smartphone manufacturers like Samsung from ugrading their phones to the latest UI without bundling it with a major Android update

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 06:20 AM PST

What I mean is, Mid-range devices like Samsung J5 and J7 (2016) already got the latest Samsung Experience UX with the nougat update. But S7 edge, a flagship device from not too long ago is yet to receive the UI update. It's been promised with the Oreo update. Why can't such a thing be bundled with a Security Update? What am I missing here?

[DEV] Promo codes for apps delivered to your inbox

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 07:32 AM PST

    Hello r/Android,

Would you like to get promo codes for new (or established) apps/games to your inbox? If yes, take a look at Promies. It's a mailing list that sents at most 1 email per week.

Developers want to distribute their promo codes easily. Users want to try apps for free. This mailing list benefits with the least possible effort both of these groups.

Any feedback about this idea, the implementation, or both are more than welcome :)

    Thanks!

[DEV] Now Playing Log - I made an app that saves your songs from Google's Now Playing feature

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 07:22 PM PST

    Hey all,

Google's Now Playing is cool, but lacks any way to log the songs it hears or even tell you where you heard them. The notification also goes away fairly quickly, which is annoying.

I made an app to solve both of those issues without root or any battery draining services. It's called Now Playing Log on the Play Store.

I saw a few other apps on the store that have similar functionality but I personally really wanted a map and a clean UI. You can what I'm talking about via a screenshot here and another screenshot here.

Side note, you might know for me for other apps I've done for the community like Dotto or the Nexus 6P buzzing fix.

    I love feedback!

    Nokia 8 Geekbench score

I am really pleased I got this phone after spending a while looking for something with top specs at a lower price. Big jump up having been using a Vivo V3 max prior to this. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to purchase a new phone soon.

Side note: do Geekbench scores get automatically uploaded to the website? Looking at their charts, this score comes pretty high up there.

What is your favorite dual camera set up?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 04:29 AM PST

Telephoto lens? Wide angle? B&W like hwawei? The new sort of weird tech used on the OP5t? Or maybe just a really good single lens?

In my opinion, even though my OP5 have a telephoto lens, a wide angle lens is the best use for the second lens on a phone.
