216 TB server for a family friend

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 02:31 AM PDT

    Overview

A family friend contracted me to build a file server for him with a VPN network extension capabilities. He wanted a lot of storage for his movies and TV shows he's collected over the years. He also wanted redundancy for his important personal files.

He also wanted a proper network setup instead of a wireless mesh network, so I also planned out his network.

    His requirements were:

    • at least 100TB of non-important storage for his movies and TV shows
    • at least 5TB of important data storage with some sort of redundancy
    • he should access the NAS anywhere in the world
    • he wanted to manage his network from outside his network
    • he wanted a more reliable system than a wireless mesh system

    My requirements were:

    • he needed to support my infrastructure changes including running conduit or cable from the office to the attic
    • disk redundancy or parity
    • system error tolerances
    • system scalability and network extension

    Planning

I wanted to have some sort of parity or data redundancy, so ZFS was a good option. ECC was a must at this point so I built an entire system around supporting ECC memory.

I chose Ubiquiti because I am already familiar with their system and they have a pretty easy UI to teach to someone who's a tech enthusiast. TP Link Omada was another alternative, but they do not have a built in NVR.

I need a VPN solution that didn't involve port forwarding, Tailscale and Zerotier were both good options, however I didn't understand Zerotier's IP routing. For ease of use, I used Tailscale. I also did an exit node on Zerotier to allow him to obfuscate his IP as his home's IP while traveling to bypass georestrictions.

    Here's the server build:

    • 1 x Intel Xeon Gold 5118
    • 1 x Asus Pro WS C621-65L Sage/10G
    • 6 x Samsung 16GB DDR4 2400MHz RDIMM ECC
    • 1 x Monoprice 4U 12-bay Hotswap Case
    • 1 x Noctua NH-D9 DX-3647 4U
    • 12 x Seagate 18TB EXOS X18
    • 1 x 120GB NVMe SSD (Boot drive)
    • 1 x 240GB VM SSD
    • 1 x PCIe to SATA 6 port
    • 1 x SATA power splitter
    • 1 x EVGA 1000w G2
    • 2 x Noctua NF-F12 iPPC-24V-3000

    Total server costs: $7268.00

    Networking components:

    • 1 x Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro
    • 1 x Ubiquiti Switch Pro 24 PoE
    • 2 x WiFi 6 Long-Range
    • 1 x Direct Attached SFP28
    • 1 x 48 port patch panel
    • 2 x CAT6 Outdoor rated cable
    • 1 x APC 1500VA Smart UPS
    • 1 x StarTech 19" 12U Server Rack Cabinet
    • 20 x CAT6 thin patch cables
    • 1 x 1000ft CAT6 cable
    • 100 x CAT6 8PC8 jacks

    Total networking costs: $2906.24

    Total costs: $10,174.24

    Software setup

Setup Proxmox with Open Media Vault as a virtual machine (2 core 2gb). Ran 10 x 18TB as ZFS1 managed by Proxmox and did a mirror of the remaining 2 x 18TB for the important documents. Pulled those ZFS pools into OMV and did the proper permissions for SMB shares.

I created another VM (2 core 2gb) that served as the VPN gateway and used TailScale to allow him to access the SMB shares while outside his network. I setup SSH keys for myself so that he can delegate VPN access to me for me to troubleshoot while abroad.

This setup allowed the most ram for the ZFS Cache while allowing double the overhead for the VMs to function properly.

    Networking setup

He has 4 wireless Orbi access points that didn't quite cover his entire house. He was also complaining that the the connection cuts out when many people were streaming at the same time.

I decided that he would need to go to a prosumer solution with access points and a wired backhaul. He also wanted to manage the network while outside the network.

I did a site survey with an access point and discovered that the WiFi 6 LR can go through his ceiling plus all 2 floors. I decided that the cleanest way of setting up the network is to run 2 wires to the attic and beam the access point down to cover the entire house. That way he will never see the access points while having 100% wifi coverage without seeing any networking equipment sitting around.

    Execution

I already setup his entire network at my home so that I can trouble shoot any issues. I also stress his NAS by uploading and downloading over 100TB of data to his disks and network.

That way when I delivered the network, all I needed to do was to run/terminate the wires and setup his user accounts/VPN accounts.

Overall it took a few months because I was working sporadically, and he was pretty far from me.

    Conclusion

I loved this project and it was a lot of fun for me and for him. He no longer had to deal with expensive cloud services for the bulk of his data and he only had to do cloud services for his important data. I learned a lot about setting up expectations between the customer and the contractor, plus he was very forgiving in a few of my mistakes. I was fun setting up something this expensive and the complete freedom of components.

Edit: I've had an oversite with the lack of a redundant PSU. Next time I visit him I'll request to change his PSU and install one if he so chooses.

Reasons Not To Cheap Out On Your PSU. Short Amateur Buying Guide.

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 07:14 AM PDT

TLDR: Make sure your PSU isn't under C-Tier from this list, though I would recommend B for higher tier components. PSUs under that tier tend to have some problems (D-Tier is okay for iGPU as noted by the list). https://cultists.network/140/psu-tier-list/

Reasons Not To Cheap Out On PSU Or At Least Be More Aware Of Bad Ones.

    1. A bad PSU can be a fire hazard. Infamously the old models of the Gigabyte GP-P850GM and GP-P750GM do spark and can be a fire hazard depending on where your PC is situated. The new units no longer spark. Still not the best unit though. Personally would still avoid it for now as Gigabyte was quite slow on the recall.

    2. A bad PSU can damage your components. Again the old models GP-P850GM and GP-P750GM has been shown to damage GPUs.

    3. Inconsistent Power Deliver to your components. This will case your PC to reset. This is rare, but it can also cause games to crash to desktop instead of resetting the whole system. This is due a number of reasons, but largely due to poor design. This is usually due to power thermal design. Some GPUs are more sensitive to this than others.

    4. A good PSU can provide surge protection/over-current protection. (u/famia)

    5. Lower quality parts and when it fails it may not end well for your parts. See #2.

Other Things To Keep In Mind (Edited In)

    1. It is better to have a bit Wattage in the PSU. Your PSU should be using about at 50-80% capacity of all your components. As a PSU gets closer to 100% can trigger overcurrent protection and cause your PC to crash/shutdown. PSUs tend to be more efficient at 50ish% though the drop off from there is only about 4-6% more or less depending on the unit. (Mentioned by /u/Tajertaby, /u/Bottled_Void)

/u/Coffinspired does a good job explaining about certain rails and how certain PSU rails and transient spikes trigger OCP.

      https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/vc4g5d/reasons_not_to_cheap_out_on_your_psu_short/iceiam6/

    2. Don't inherently trust manufacturer/brand names. All brands can make bad product. (Mentioned by /u/sL1NK_19)

    3. 80+ is not always an indicator of quality. Some Gold units can be bad. Some Bronze units can be good, etc.

    4. Be careful if you switch modular cables between PSUs. This can destroy your components. Check Cablemod to see if it is compatible. https://cablemod.com/compatibility/ (Mentioned by /u/throwaway283412434 and /u/CapnClutch007)

    5. Older PSU and components do have an increased chance of failure. Look at the warranty and how long after the warranty ends. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bathtub_curve

Why did I decide to make this list?

I mostly made this list, because I was trying to help someone out with an EVGA 600W W1. This person's PC was crashing to desktop and while it is commonly a GPU or driver issue it can be a PSU issue as stated on #3. If you look at the list it is an F-Tier PSU. This PSU overheats due to the bridge rectifier not having a heatsink causing it to deliver inconsistent power at higher power draw due to heat. It's PCI-E cable is also a bit too thin. Design is outdated.

No one really pointed out that the PSU was an issue and I assume only looked at the 600W and thought that it was fine. I feel like we should be more aware of PSUs when troubleshooting and their possible issues.

Ryzen or Intel (for CSGO) $70 Difference

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 03:49 AM PDT

    Hello. I'm trying to build a new PC. I'm unsure between i5 12400 and Ryzen 5 5600x.

I'll be going with B550m Mortar wifi if Ryzen And B660m Mortar Wifi if Intel

CSGO is what I mostly play

Intel build is gonna end up $70 cheaper

Which one should I go with?

With the GPU Market exploding with Crypto, is it safe to buy GPUs that were mined with?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 05:38 AM PDT

I live near Toronto so obviously a lot of people had mining rigs and I've stumbled upon some pretty amazing deals for cards they've mined with. For example a 3070ti for 500 or a 6700xt for 400. Is it worth grabbing one of these? I'm looking to build soon, budget isn't a complete set in stone thing either. Was looking for some clarity on these cards and whether mining should steer me away.

    Thank you.

    Buzzing sound coming from PSU

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 08:25 AM PDT

Hi guys. I'm getting ready to install an RTX 3070 into my PC and noticed the PSU is buzzing when I got close to it. Its only audible if you get really close to the unit and I'm not sure if its faulty. Its a Corsair RM650x PSU and the computer is turned off while it makes the noise.

Do you guys think this is coil whine or should I replace/RMA the unit? I've been using it for 2 years and haven't had any issues.

Intel 12400 or 12600k along with RTX 3070 FE

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 06:07 AM PDT

    Hello,

I've started to buy parts for my pc. Got the RTX 3070 FE first and now confused between the 12400 and 12600k processors and their motherboards. The whole motherboard scene is also confusing right now...

    • No plans to overclock.
    • Will use 3200mhz CL16 16GB RAM
    • Just play some AAA games like cyberpunk, GTA, RDR2, etc....
    • Not interested in e-sports.
    • Will be using a 1440p monitor with 144hz refresh rate.
    • Will not be upgrading any of my main components for another 5 years atleast.

What is the best processor for the current usecase here? Please suggest the processor & mobo combo as well.

    Thanks in adv.

Bios Flashback still going for 30 minutes

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 04:24 AM PDT

I recently bought an Asus tuf gaming b550-plus wifi and need to do a bios Flashback. The green light has now been flashing consistently for 30 minutes and looking online it seems it shouldn't take much more than 5. The motherboard currently has everything other than the GPU in it and I think it may have been flashing immediately once power was given to the motherboard. How can I safely stop the bios flashback and how can I do it again to avoid the problem?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 08:10 AM PDT

Hi guys, I want to buy for myself new PC. I dont care about RGB and stuff, case can be ugly as hell but must have acceptable airflow. My budget is around 1050 €.The configuration im now thinking about looks like this:

    -Gainward GeForce RTX 3060Ti Ghost 8 GB/RX 6700XT

-Intel Core i5-11400F (meaby 12th gen because of bottleneck)

    -SilentiumPC Fera 5 120mm-WD 500GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Blue SN570

    -G.SKILL 16GB (2x8GB) 3200MHz CL16 Ripjaws V Black

-Sharkoon WPM Gold ZERO 750W/MSI MAG 550W 80 Plus Bronze

I dunno with motherboad and case to choose. Can you recommend me some budget versions? What do you think guys should i go for it or lower expectations and grab some RX6600XT?

    1080p Gaming only rig

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 11:42 PM PDT

    Hi all

    I'm upgrading from my old gaming rig of about 8/9 yrs;

    i7 4770

    16gb DDR3

    1070 STRIX

Various disk drives from other machines some SSD some HDD

    Was thinking along the lines of this;

    i5 12600

    B660 mobo

    3060ti

    16gb DDR4

    500gb SSD PCIE NVMe

    850W PSU

The rig is purely for gaming and the odd bit of word but nothing else. I dont have anything display wise above 1080p and the monitor I have is fine (its 144hz display so I'm looking for more FPS than resolution). I figure this setup would run ray tracing and modern games at 60fps @ 1080p and my older stuff like WH2 for example in huge battles above 60 FPS too. I ideally dont want to stretch anymore as prices in NZ arent too flash, I can take a drive out of my old rig for more storage (that PC will turn into my wifes office PC).

So is this anygood for that purpose? Should I go the extra yard for the 12600KF?? (No i dont plan to OC the CPU). Will this setup last a few years and allow upgrades within the next few years if needed? Any suggestions and advice is very welcome.

    Cheers

Need advice on cooling build / thermals for recently upgraded PC.

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 07:50 AM PDT

I have a high-end gaming PC that has recently been upgraded with an RTX 3090 and Ryzen 5 5900X.

I'm having quite a bit of issues with thermals; idle thermals are not great, but are liveable with, but load thermals are basically stopping me from gaming with gaming loads that actually push the system. GPU temps are the main problem.. I'm seeing 'hot spot' and 'VRAM' temps of 90-95C under load, with overall GPU temps around 80-85C under load, and as bad as 55C idle.

The system is stable, but given the GPU temps I've been seeing, I've had to power limit the GPU out of fears that the thing is cooking itself alive.

I tried repasting the GPU, which hasn't made much difference. I'm also becoming well aware that the airflow in my current case (Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ATX Tempered Glass Edition) probably isn't anywhere near good enough, which is probably a big part of the issue.

I'd like recommendations on cases with good airflow, possible replacement CPU AIO (if you think this might be needed), as well as general advice regarding cooling practices and if there could be other issues affecting GPU and general system thermals.

Any case needs to fix an ATX board, a 240mm rad, and have space to install at least 3 3.5" hard drives, and naturally, needs to fit a full length RTX 3090.

    Full current spec is:

    • GPU: ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 3090 Trinity
    • CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X
    • Board: Gigabyte AORUS ELITE AX V2
    • Storage: 1TB M.2 SSD (forget the brand) + 4TB Seagate HDD + 2x 6TB WD HDD (one, one as backup)
    • PSU: Corsair CX750M (carried over from my old build, has lasted me for years)
    • Current Case: Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ATX Tempered Glass Edition (silver)
    • Current Cooling: Case provided 140mm rear fan and 140mm front intake fans, CPU has a Corsair H100iV2 RGB AIO with 2 140mm Noctua fans, mounting below rad as exhautst

B550 motherboard SPARKS when turning on PSU switch

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 06:58 AM PDT

    Footage: https://youtu.be/KjQp1QNWf9I

This appears to be 100% replicable if I...

    1. turn off the PSU switch
    2. hold power button on case for a few seconds
    3. turn on the PSU switch

It sparks on step #3, and sometimes there's also smoke I can see/smell (video might not be clear enough to show it after rendering).

I suppose I would need to RMA the motherboard regardless, but can anyone explain why this might be happening? If it wasn't a motherboard that was always defective, what could it have been? What kinds of build mistakes could I have made to cause this? Is it likely to have damaged my other components? I'm not very experienced - this is only my 2nd build.

Components in question:Motherboard: B550 Aorus Pro rev 1.0 (been using it for 13 months across 2 builds)PSU: Corsair RM750 (brand new)Case: Fractal Torrent (brand new)Retired PSU that used to be connected to this board: Corsair CV650

No GPU output after new MOBO and CPU

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 06:45 AM PDT

Hey everyone, so a few days ago I made the decision to upgrade my CPU.

The parts I got: Intel i7 12700KF, Gigabyte H610M S2H DDR4, 16 GB Vengeance LPX 3200mHz, Evga bronze 750W BQ, GTX 1070 Ti Zotac mini.

So after I installed everything I gave it a quick boot test and everything seemed to work like normal (fans spinning up normally, LED's lighting). After that I connected it to a display only to be met with no output, so I changed the display and cable (and tried different GPU output, made sure everything is connected on the MOBO) to no avail.

I think the issue is that I got a MOBO with older BIOS firmware than is supported for my i7 12700KF , but on the BIOS update page from Gigabyte there is no update which states that it specifically makes the mobo support the CPU. Is it normal for BIOS updates to not specify a detailed changelog?

https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/H610M-S2H-DDR4-rev-11-13/support#support-dl-bios (BIOS update page referenced above)

And lastly, could my GPU be broken? It was working completely fine in my old motherboard (no artifacting or anything hinting at it dying) and the lights and fans still spin up like normal.

    Thanks in advance!

Upgrade to 3080 now or wait?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 10:33 PM PDT

Good day folks, I was wondering if I should upgrade to 3080 now or wait since I've been hearing Nvidia announcing their new GPUs next month.

I got a 1080Ti currently and it still serves me ok at 1440p, but can't deny that I've been salivating for a 3080 and they are widely available in Norway just a bit over MSRP. Could buy the 3080 new for 1000 euros or shall I just wait until next month to see what Nvidia announces?

This is paired with an AMD 5800x.

    Corsair H115i Elite CAPELLIX

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 05:51 AM PDT

What do I need for the H115i to work with LGA 1700 I found the "Corsair LGA1700 Retrofit Kit) but it says "This kit does not come with the brackets or backplate necessary for LGA1200/115x/1700 installation" does this mean I need something else to go with this? Thanks

    Blank PC show error 0xc000000e

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 05:38 AM PDT

This is an old pc, as in DDR2, probably from 2010? That I'm trying to turn into a media box for my parents. I have a 500gb hard drive for it that I completely wiped and added just a partition (I believe I've also tried it without any partition but I might not have done that, if so could that be the problem?) I can get into BIOS, although it does constantly report a CMOS error that I have to fix (date and time, I'm thinking that this might be the root of all the problems and I just have to pick up a new CMOS battery at computer store.) I've already used windows media creation tool on a spare USB drive I have, I've selected the 32bit option as if I remember correctly, the system can't handle 64 bit (please correct me if I'm wrong.) The BIOS identifies that I have a hard drive plugged in but it shows that I have a floppy drive and CD/DVD drive plugged in even if there is not (not sure of the mechanics of this, just thought it might be relevant.) After the computer boots, it just gets stuck in the error screen and if I press F8 or Enter, the screen just flashes with a little black and does nothing. This was an old pc that we had that was previously working but had an error that I cannot remember and I just ended up taking the hard drive from it. It has been in storage since. What can I do to fix the problem?

Should I use top fans as exhaust or intake?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 05:31 AM PDT

I'm trying to figure out what exactly I should use my top fans for. Currently, I have three intake fans which came with my Phanteks P400A-D case, and I'm using the fan from the Hyper 212 Black Edition as a rear exhaust (I upgraded to a Be Quiet Dark Rock 4 and I repurposed my old CPU cooler's fan). My top two fans would be Noctua NF-P12 redux-1700 PWM fans. Would it be a good idea to use them as exhaust as normal, or could I improve cooling in my case somewhat by using them as intakes? There is a mesh filter above the top fans so dust intake isn't necessarily an issue.

Why are XT cards much more popular than non XT ones

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 05:13 AM PDT

Wanted to get rx 6800, but somebody suggested I should buy XT one instead even tho its more expansive. Also I see a lot of builds with XT ones.

RX 6600 XT vs RX 6700 XT

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 09:29 PM PDT

I am looking to build a new PC and have found all parts except for the GPU. I would like to keep the total build price below $1200 if possible, however I am struggling on the GPU decision. The price difference between these GPUs is $120 and I was wondering if the performance difference justifies this price difference between the cards. The price of my build with the 6700 is around $1250, and the price with the 6600 is around $1130. I am looking to be able to run pretty much any game (such as GTA V or RDR2) at 1080p ultra with above 75fps, and less demanding games at 1440p with above 60fps. Also, if you have any recommendations for other areas where I can save money, please let me know. Thanks

New cpu running warmer than expected with an aio?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 08:46 AM PDT

I have a ryzen 7 5800x with a corsair rgb pro xt 240mm aio cooler, and hwinfo is reporting 35-50c while idling which is normal but as soon as I start doing a couple tasks my cpu goes into the high 60's and even reached 79c during a steam download and the cpu was only at 40% load at its highest I saw. I had to ditch the Armory crate software because of how much bloatware was installed and being used all the time. I have played a couple of steam games like phasmophobia in vr and the cpu was somewhere in the 70's but it was not as high as I saw before. I used to have a corsair h100iv2 with an overclocked ryzen 5 1600 and I never saw the temps go above like 75c under full load. I have the enthoo pro m case which seems to have good enough airflow but the only thing that I can think of why the temps would be higher is because instead of having the radiator mounted on the front with an intake I have it mounted on top with exhaust fans, but my main concern is that I haven't even really stress tested this cpu and I'm getting these temps with an aio, I would assume that it would start throttling under full load. The only thing that I have done so far is change the ram speed to 3200mhz.

I have currently tried to reapply the aio to the cpu and I am getting the same temps. I will try to play some more intensive games to get a more accurate reading under load but I'm honestly a bit scared to try prime95 or even cinebenchr23. If anyone has any insight i'd appreciate it.

    New Cpu and Mobo

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 08:42 AM PDT

I'm looking to upgrade my ryzen 5 3600 and I'm going to pass it down to a relative. I tend to play at 1440p gaming with a 3060ti. Should I get a 5000 series ryzen and a new mobo with it or should I aim for intel 12th gen? not sure what cpu to get if I go with intel for longevity since am4 is gonna be a dead socket soon.

    Thanks in advance.
