    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Do I need a Windows Key?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 08:48 AM PDT

Recently built a PC, have "free windows" boot on there. Per my last post, am probably just gonna stick to using my desktop for coding since I work from home anyways. That's my question-do I need to get a windows key if I plan on getting into coding? Starting a 24 week program and I know I'm gonna have to download a bunch of programs. Haven't had an issue with that yet (in terms of downloading anything onto my PC with admin permissions) but would there be ANY reason that not having a Windows key would hinder my ability to do anything in this space?

I tested the Wraith Prism with a Ryzen 5700x

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 08:26 AM PDT

There are dozens of posts about "Does the wraith prism handle 5800x" but none about the recently launched 5700x. Since I just upgraded from 2700x to 5700x, and this question will be googled thousands of times, I decided to run a few tests:

    1. 10 minutes Prime95, Wraith Prism switch on L (minimuns discarded as I reset mid-test)
    2. 10 minutes Prime95, Wraith Prism switch on H
    3. 10minute Cinebench R23 with the Prism "H" . Score was 14800.
    4. Ran Far Cry 4 max settings 1440p for a bit and got max temps around mid 60's. **Even though FPS is clearly higher than 2700x, there is now a stutter in the game which I could not pinpoint the source**.
    5. Tested Overwatch and there is NO stutter.

TL;DR ------IS THE PRISM ENOUGH FOR THE 5700X ?-----------

    1- YES if you are going to be gaming on it;

    2- Assuming Cinebench as a decent "real life" heavy work environment, It will run a bit under maximum capacity on heavy load work;

3-It will definitely not get you maximum scores on Stress tests and benchmarks in general.

By the way, The product page on AMD for the Ryzen 5700x looks like a draft for an incoming product. It also doesn't show in the Drivers/Downloads page and is not currently supported by Ryzen Master almost 2 months after release. I'm starting to wonder if I did the right thing....

BTW2 I have pictures of the tests but can't post them, or don't know how.

I want to get a driving simulator for my step father for Father’s Day. He was just diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer and can no longer drive. What do I buy?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2022 04:23 PM PDT

My step dad has always loved cars and driving. He's big into all things racing, and one of the worst parts for him about his prognosis is that he can no longer drive due to risk of seizure that he's now taking medication for daily. What are the essential parts for the setup and what's a rough estimate for the cost? I've already talked to my mom about it and she agrees it's a great idea. I know high-end racing simulators can run up to like $10k and I'm not looking for that… I just want him to have something to scratch the itch. If this is the wrong place to post this, I apologize. Thanks for reading.

Edit: I'm extremely grateful for all the advice and well wishes from these comments. I've seen a ton of mixed opinions, all with very valid points, and at the moment I'm not sure what I want to do. I will certainly provide updates for those who care, but thank you all for your input. Fuck cancer.

First PC, looking for some help so I don't make big mistakes.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 05:27 PM PDT

I'm building my first PC, here is my current list, critique it if you want, I'm gonna be using it for gaming, school, and general pc stuff, but the most intense thing I'll do would be minor photoshop, premier pro, and after effects usage. Premier Pro and After Effects probably won't exceed 1080p 60fps, Photoshop will probably be 4k though.

    Anyway, here are my questions:

    1. What is the difference between this GPU and this GPU?
    2. I've seen online that AMD stock CPU coolers are decent enough, for my build do I need the Arctic cooler or should I just use stock?
    3. Should I find a better power supply or is my current one good?
    4. Is my ram too much for what I'll be doing with the pc?
    5. What does DDR4, DDR5, 3600, CL and stuff mean when talking about ram?
    6. Do I need case fans or are they optional? They seem essential to me but I've seen some lists (and I think an actually built pc on TikTok) with no case fans so I'm confused.

    Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Edit: I'm probably going to get an Nvidia GPU, because even though my dad gets the employee discount on AMD products, Nvidia is still better for what I'm doing.

According to *rumors*, the 4080 will have a TDP of 450W. I was wondering if I can be fine getting that without upgrading my PSU of 750W.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 05:57 PM PDT

I've made a pcpartpicker list with my exact parts, however, I've used the 3090ti since it has the same TDP as the 4080. The estimated wattage seems to be under 750W so I was wondering if I could really be fine with my current PSU.

    Gaming Laptop Fury (rant)

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 04:25 PM PDT

I always knew the risk of buying a gaming laptop....

But how bad they are is just a piss take. The issue with pre-builts in general is that they are always over priced. But the biggest issue that is only present with pre-built laptops is that they are impossible to fix once that 2 year warranty is up. Like they are designed to break. The thermal paste in the CPU handily dries up the minute the warranty has expired you need to open it up either yourself or give it to a repair shop because otherwise you just throttle at 100 degrees Celsius constantly and it's unusable even when under-volting and using a cool pad. The issue is they are so fragile (and that's v clearly a design choice). Screws are purposely made of softer metals meaning they get rounded very easily as soon as any pressure is applied. This means you have to break the laptop to fix it. The connectors are made to be fragile to the tiniest bit of force shatters them. The CPU is hidden away under so many components that you have to dismantle the whole PC to get to it. Why because they don't want you to touch it. Even pros can't fix it because they're that volatile. It's all a scam to get rich of the worst quality devices.

If anyone has any recommendations and what I should do next pls let me know. Be it similar stories or tips for building a new desktop pls lmk in the comments.

    CPU overheating despite new AIO

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 06:21 PM PDT

I had an issue with my CPU overheating the other day. It got to an insane temperature of 110C. I immediately turned it off and called iBP who built the computer. They said it may be time to replace the AIO. I purchased a new one on Amazon and installed it today. The CPU is not anywhere near 110 but it doesn't idle at 30 or 40 like others I've seen. Just on the desktop or browsing the web, it spikes to the mid 60s-low 70s. What in the world could be causing this?

Installing new SSD - will this work?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 06:11 PM PDT

To begin with a bit of backstory:

My build is a Powerspec G155 with some upgrades to RAM, power supply, and storage. I originally had Windows on my 1 tb hard drive, and was gonna move it to a new 1 tb SSD awhile back.

After installing the SSD, I knocked the rig over (before anyone judges, this is very silly, I know!). It created some unfixable errors on my hard drive, and I was able to reinstall windows, but the errors on the drive still existed.

I never got around to reinstalling Windows on the SSD. However, with a recent random power surge, my PC didn't shut down properly and automatic repair couldn't fix any hard drive issues.

I was able to get my hands on a free 256 gb SSD, which leads me to the current situation.

My plan is to install the 256 gb SSD, and get Windows on the SSD to avoid certain hard drive issues in the future.

However, windows is technically still on the hard drive. I don't have enough sata data cables on my rig to accompany both SSD's and the hard drive, so I was thinking about removing the hard drive, installing windows on the 256 gb SSD, and then buying a kit to make the internal hard drive an external hard drive with the intention to format it later

My concern is whether or not this is possible or feasible. Windows would still be on the hard drive and the 256 gb SSD, and I'm wondering about any potential issues thay might arise.

Sorry if the my post is unclear, I wasn't sure how to word it. Any help would be appreciated!

Slim fan on CPU cooler suddenly started making a rattling/clicking sound (fuma 2 rev B)

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 06:06 PM PDT

and I can hear a whirring sound like it's scraping something when I spin the fan with my hand. Started using my PC for around a week, just a few days into some heavier gaming and some benchmarks to optimize peformance and it started doing it while running 3DMark Timespy

I wonder if it's fixable. Having to return this would be troublesome but buying a replacement fan wouldn't make sense either so it's either I get it fixed or return it

Evga SFX Supernova 850w GM PSU Coil Whine

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 05:34 PM PDT

Just bought and installed my new SFX PSU and noticed that once a game is running on my computer, there is a loud coil whine. When I tab out of the game or close the game all together, the coil whine stops. Are any of my computer's components at risk because of this??? I am already planning on returning it and I ordered a Corsair SF750, people seem to have better luck with them than Evga and coolermaster.

Is a 650 watts psu enough?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 02:25 AM PDT

Hello, just a question if a 650 watts psu is enough for 3060ti, with a bunch of rgbs. I'm planning to upgrade my set up with a 3060 ti and a bunch of lian li's fans (i say 3 Al fans and 6 Sl fans), its strimmers and an aio. Is 650 is enough or should I upgrade my psu also? If yes, you can recommend the minimum wattage for it?

My current psu is Dagger pro 650 80+ gold

I think my computer is reaching end of life. What can I do to get it running for another 2 years?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2022 10:59 AM PDT

My gaming computer has been unstable for the last couple of months. A few months ago, my computer crashed while I was playing a game. At the time, I was unable to POST despite restarting the computer many times. After a few trials and errors, I was able to resolve the issue via swapping my GPU to a different PCI slot. However, the GPU is very close to the PCU shroud, raising the concern of reduced airflow. Since then, my computer has been crashing more and more frequently.

Initially, my computer would one of two things when gaming. One, it would play just fine and I am able to play for hours without issue. Two, the computer would crash and I am required to restart the computer multiple times before I am back to "one." When it does crash, there are three ways the computer would stop working.

    1. My monitor would display a solid color and automatically restart. Given the fact that my GPU is close to my PCU shroud, I am worried that my GPU is failing.
    2. I may get the BSoD with the error "Video TDR Failure" and automatically restart.
    3. The computer would freeze and only the audio would continue working, forcing me to manually restart the computer.

Not only has the crashing been more frequent, but it is also affecting my computer usage outside gaming, such as watching videos via the internet. I am not sure if this is a hardware or software issue. I have tried updating my graphics card multiple times. I have changed settings on MSI Afterburner. I have scanned my computer for viruses.

How do I pinpoint the exact cause of my computer failing? What can I do to extend the life of my computer for two more years? I plan on building a new computer in the future, but I am currently undergoing training with two (or more) years remaining before I start my actual career.

Monitor saying "no input" when plugging it into brand new pc. Noob in need of help

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 06:46 PM PDT

working on building my first pc and I cannot get my monitor to show anything (states no input). my CPU is a Ryzen 5 5500, motherboard is a gigabyte B450 DS3H v2 and I am using gigabyte Geforce GTX 1660 super for my GPU. I believe I have everything plugged in correctly. The motherboard has an LED on in the corner and all fans are running which signifies to me that it is powered. I think that the motherboard is compatible out of the box with my CPU but I am not 100% sure of this. Is there any thoughts on troubleshooting why I cannot see anything on the monitor? I still need to install Windows 10 so is it not showing anything on the monitor because I dont have an operating system? should it be showing the BIOs?

    Please help! Thanks!

First PC build - seeking any input.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 06:37 PM PDT

This is my first PC build. I have dreamed of doing this for, idk, over 15 years.

I'm coming off of an ancient HP 'Gaming PC' bought off the shelf with a quad-core AMD Phenom 2.8GHz CPU, an AMD 512MB graphics card, and 8GB of RAM (lol). Given that, I will likely be pleased with whatever I build. It has lasted well beyond its lifespan and does not run most new games I want to download.

I am flexible on the budget (1500-2000 or so; capable of pumping the top end up 100-200 if there's a compelling upgrade). Price to performance does matter, but it is not the core mantra of the build. I am also dead-set on some pleasing aesthetic value for which I'll be overpaying on a few things (as I'm sure you'll notice by the fans). I'll be using this for school and gaming.

    I already have peripherals/display: a Razer keyboard and mouse, a 1080p 144hz 32" moniter, plus a 19" old monitor as a secondary display.

Of note, I am contemplating switching the i5-12600k for the i7-12700k. But I don't see much difference in performance based on what I'll be doing, benchmarks, reviews, etc. Thoughts on that?

    Non-flexible points:

    • 12th Gen Intel [I just like their numbers the best and the prices seem fine for my budget]
    • 32GB+ RAM [I often cap out my RAM and like having multiple windows, displays, videos, programs, research, etc open]

I'm open to all ideas, criticism - whatever. Let me know what you think or what you would change in your own build!

New PSU and graphics card, computer won't start

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 04:15 PM PDT

I just put in a new PSU (EVGA 750 Watt) and a new graphics card (EVGA 3080 FTW3).

When I plug in the PSU and turn it on, then hit the power switch on my PC, a light will turn on briefly and my CPU fan will spin for a split second, then everything goes dark. I tried taking out the new graphics card but had the same result. I double checked the connection of the cables.

Is my PSU dead? Also, would it cause problems if I tried using my old 600w PSU with this system temporarily?

    Is my GPU dying?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 06:17 PM PDT

I have a RX 480 8gb Founder Edition. Recently it started saying that "drivers failed to load" after booting in windows 10. This causes screen tearing and very low FPS. I have to restart it a few times or do a clean install of the drivers to get it back to working. Sometimes when the drivers are properly loaded then arrow starts lagging and dragging a window causes lots of stuttering with chattering in my headset. I have tried full driver uninstall using AMD DDU and even clean install of windows 10. BIOS, windows 10, and chipset drivers are up to date. My pc is a prebuilt Dell 5675 gaming desktop. Is it time to get a new GPU, if so what should I upgrade to. I only play GTA V and csgo on 144hz 1080p monitor.

    Full specs:

    Ryzen 7 1700x

    Dell 5675 motherboard

    16 gb ram

Looking for a Pre-Built that I can upgrade in the future. I don’t know where to start.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 06:03 PM PDT

So as the title says I'm making the switch from Mac to PC and want to get a prebuilt that I would be able to fully upgrade as I go. I'm building this to play new Open World RPGS (mainly Elder Scrolls VI when it comes out) as well as work on music (Ableton 10 Suite).

My price range right now is about 1500$

I considered building my own from scratch but I haven't done that before and would rather get a prebuilt I can play and upgrade over time as needed.

    Any help would be appreciated.
