Fedora, Flatpak and Firefox Troubleshooting: Multi Account Containers and GNOME Shell integration Posted: 02 Jun 2022 08:29 AM PDT I'm on Fedora 36, everything is up to date. I initially uninstalled Firefox because I prefer the Flatpak version. However both MAC and GSi are not working on the Flatpak version. Neither icons appear (they typically appear by default after installation), and they were not hidden inside the "customise toolbar" options. I then reinstalled Firefox via RPM and GSi works, but MAC is still not working. I'm new to Linux and Fedora so I might be missing something obvious here. I was under the impression the only difference between Flatpak and RPM is their distribution and dependency models. Yet GSi is broken with the Flatpak version? I understand there's some sandboxing going on with Flatpak, did I miss out something? MAC is even more confusing. Its just missing altogether. I can see options to configure it inside settings, but the icon to use and assign containers is missing. No idea how to troubleshoot, pls send halp :( [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Jun 2022 07:50 AM PDT Hi, when i install a flatpak i get an error which tell me that my system isnt creating shortcuts for my flatpak. here i the error: " Note that the directories '/var/lib/flatpak/exports/share' '/home/guss/.local/share/flatpak/exports/share' are not in the search path set by the XDG_DATA_DIRS environment variable, so applications installed by Flatpak may not appear on your desktop until the session is restarted. ". I have restarted my system several times and searched on google but i still haven't found a fix. Any help would be grate, Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Should I finally switch from Windows to Linux? Posted: 01 Jun 2022 05:56 PM PDT Hello, I've been using Ubuntu on VMs and through WSL for a few weeks. I think I wanna try it on my actual hardware now. However I've never switched OSs before, should I do it? [link] [comments] |

Which distro I've narrowed down to would be best for a complete Linux noob gamer? Posted: 02 Jun 2022 09:54 AM PDT I hope everyone is having a good day. In the next 1-3 months I plan on building a new PC with Linux and I was wondering which distro I should use. I only really use Firefox and Steam games so from what I've seen the transition should be pretty painless. I've already gone through Distrochooser and have compared the ones that look like they would be a good fit for me and I've narrowed it down to 3 (potentially 4) distros that I'm not sure what to go with. I've narrowed it down to Zorin OS, Linux Mint, Ubuntu, and potentially Pop!_OS. Zorin seems to be the closest to a Windows experience which is what I'm most familiar with, but it doesn't seem like it gets talked about much in this sub (at least from what I've seen so far) compared to other distros, so I don't know how popular/supported it is. Ubuntu has the largest amount of support of the ones I listed, but I've also heard it's the least noob friendly of the Distros I've listed. Linux Mint seems like a solid choice, but being a complete Linux noob I don't know if it's the best choice for what I use my computer for. Pop!_OS... I have no clue about. It barely made it on my list, but I thought I saw a few comments on this sub saying that it's decent for gaming. In addition to the distros, I was hoping to use Plasma KDE as my desktop so I was wondering how difficult that is to do with each distro. Thank you for your time, I greatly appreciate it. TL;DR: I need to choose between Zorin OS, Linux Mint, Ubuntu, and Pop!_OS for a distro mainly used for gaming. [link] [comments] |
Linux Noob having trouble running app in Mac Terminal Posted: 02 Jun 2022 05:35 AM PDT Hey all, So, I'm generally tech savvy, but am really blundering in the dark trying to do stuff in Terminal. In the past, I've been able to follow step-by-step instructions and get things to go smoothly, but it seems like I've screwed things up somehow and I can't use an app I want to use. The app is Video Transcode, by Don Melton. When I try to use the app according to the normal command line thing, it spits back an error: /usr/local/bin/transcode-video: HandBrakeCLI not available Okay, weird, because I'm pretty sure I have HandBrakeCLI installed. On Don Melton's page, he suggests installing HandBrake via FlatPak, but I cannot find instructions as to how to do that anywhere for Mac running Linux through Terminal. I've spent a couple hours on this by now and I'm just going in circles, so any help VERY much appreciated! Thanks, T [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2022 05:35 AM PDT Alright so I need windows for a couple of games that just don't work on my linux install. I plan on having a disk for my linux install and another one for the windows one. I'm currently on systemd-boot but willing to change if necessary. The thing is I've never gotten to work dualbooting with the OSes on two different disks. I mean sure I can mash F9 and get into the boot menu but I mean from an actual linux bootloader and I'd like to know how to do that. Bonus points: I know this is an odd situation but windows refuses to boot as UEFI/GPT on my motherboard and I'd like to have linux as UEFI for when I eventually change the mobo. This might be impossible but is there a way to boot windows as BIOS/MBR from a UEFI bootloader? [link] [comments] |
[Mint] Qemu + virt-manager has increased boot time significantly. Posted: 02 Jun 2022 07:45 AM PDT I'm using a laptop with i5-8265U CPU and MX250 GPU with 8GB of RAM, and a 250gb sata SSD. Ever since I installed qemu and virt manager, it has drastically increased the amount of time it takes to boot my machine (from approx 5s to 15-20s). What can I do about this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2022 10:56 AM PDT I ran dd on the wrong drive, instead of sdg I ran it on sdb... [jt@Dell-Precision mac-os-high-sierra-iso]$ sudo dd bs=4M if=MacOSHighSierra.iso of=/dev/sdb ^C1038+0 records in 1037+0 records out 4349493248 bytes (4.3 GB, 4.1 GiB) copied, 19.4814 s, 223 MB/s [jt@Dell-Precision mac-os-high-sierra-iso]$ But it does not seem like it affected sdb at all as I can access all my documents there... I have only a key file to decrypt LUKS, how to add password? Posted: 02 Jun 2022 01:28 PM PDT Hi, I created encrypted volume that way: All works just fine, I can open that after reboot, but I recently thought of adding password just in case if file gets corrupted. I found this command to add new password: During the process, it asks me to provide any existing password, but what if I have no password, only key file? [link] [comments] |
What's the best way to run root in a bash script? Posted: 02 Jun 2022 01:03 PM PDT I want to automate some tasks for setting up a new Linux system, which would include installing some packages. But there seems to be some debate on how this should be done securely. I can't run the entire script as root, because that could end up leaving some files owned by root instead of my user. I guess I could separate root vs user actions into separate scripts, but I'd leave that as a last resort. [link] [comments] |
Booting up debian but gets stuck Posted: 02 Jun 2022 12:07 PM PDT Sometimes the OS would get stuck on the first screen, but randomly pushing buttons would result in it going to the second screen. Something about entering the password is really wierd and never lets me enter the entire password. And where is the GUI? This is a fresh install on an old PC I had lying around. Any help would be nice. [link] [comments] |
How can I grep a word that starts and ends with a vowel? Posted: 02 Jun 2022 03:05 AM PDT So far I've got: grep -E '[aeiouAEIOU].*[aeiou]' The issue is that it scans in two words instead of one. Something like this "Alien Umbrella" bevause alien starts with "a" and umbrella ends with an "a". How can I write something which only scans the umbrella as i was the word to both start and end with a vowel. Any suggestions are appreciated!! [link] [comments] |

Does anyone know a good linux video editor Posted: 02 Jun 2022 11:36 AM PDT I tried linux a while back and I gave up after 2-3 months of testing it out. I currently use the program PowerDirector 18 on Windows to video edit. I was wondering if anyone had a good alternative to powerdirector or knew how to run it through wine (I could find no instructions for how to run powerdirector). I know about davinci resolve, I tried it but it was horribly optimized. It takes hours longer to render on Davinci than it does to render in Pywerdirector. For example a 2hr 30min 720p video I made took 18 hours to render in Davinci resolve where as in powerdirector it took 40 minutes (BTW I had stuff like titles and transitions in the video). Any recommendations would be appreciated. *I also use another program called VSDC to add audio waveforms into the videos. So, I'm not sure if there's any programs on linux that can do that. Any risks with trying out window managers? Posted: 02 Jun 2022 11:25 AM PDT Hi! Im kind of a newbie, so i figured id ask the pros before trying. I am using Manjaro KDE with Kwin for reference. I have tried installing dual DEs, but it has always f*ked something up. Is it the same with WMs? Im just very curious to try some out! [link] [comments] |

[KDE Plasma Manjaro] Custom system notification with systemd at startup Posted: 02 Jun 2022 10:36 AM PDT Hello, I made a little Python script that will remind to backup some personal files on my external SSD, I made it so after a certain amount of days a system notification will pop up as a reminder. My problem now is that the script doesn't want to launch at startup properly. I get this error message: ``` File "/usr/lib/python3.10/site-packages/dbus/bus.py", line 182, in activate_name_owner self.start_service_by_name(bus_name) File "/usr/lib/python3.10/site-packages/dbus/bus.py", line 277, in start_service_by_name return (True, self.call_blocking(BUS_DAEMON_NAME, BUS_DAEMON_PATH, File "/usr/lib/python3.10/site-packages/dbus/connection.py", line 652, in call_blocking reply_message = self.send_message_with_reply_and_block( dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. my_startup.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE my_startup.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'. Failed to start Python SSD Backup Notification.
[Service] ExecStart=/bin/python3.10 '<path_to_python_file>' Type=oneshot [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target `` I tried the method in the first reply to no success however. I used to get the cannot open display error before the dbus error. Today I tried searching how fix the dbus problem, and I discovered that getting rid of [Service] BusName=org.freedesktop.hostname1 ExecStart=/bin/python3.10 '<path_to_python_file>' Type=oneshot `` Can anyone help me with this? Is there something obvious that I'm missing? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2022 10:30 AM PDT I have been preparing for RHCSA for the last several months and never seem to get to the end of my preparation. Distractions, laziness and procrastination, they seem to be my friends :( I wanted to learn linux logging in depth. What is the difference between a great linux admin vs an exceptional one? A thorough understanding of linux logging! I wanted to link here a great article that started me on logging a few months ago. I know there are many articles out there, but this one connects all facilities together so well, I thought if you are looking to learn logging, this would be the first guide. Read the linked article on centralized logging. I have my routers/switches/wifi APs logging to my rocky linux server and centralized logging is the way to go. When I started my prep for the rhcsa, I started writing notes. Its time consuming to say the least and stops whatever you are doing to write them down. I came across this wonderful guide/cheat sheet one day and stopped writing notes for my prep completely. Wanted to share both for anybody preparing for any linux exams. [link] [comments] |
Clementine Music player possible for a slide show Background? Posted: 02 Jun 2022 10:29 AM PDT I have a lot of art images on my computer an always try to use them for something other than sitting in a folder. I know you can change the image in Clementine, or even use the album cover for the image... but I was wondering if its possible to have your own custom slideshow? Like for a desktop, but inside the app? I am running Debian KDE. Can't seem to find any information on it on google searches. just wondering if this is a thing, or if there another media player with a similar layout that might do what I am hoping to achieve.
