    MacBook Air or Windows Laptop

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 06:03 AM PDT

Hey there, I have previously used a Lenovo IdeaPad with 4gb of ram and a pentium and it's slow as hell. I am due for an upgrade. I won't be editing videos or pics just usual university work and some programming. I've used Linux for years and pretty comfortable with it cause my windows is damn slow on my machine. I am here in Germany and am considering a laptop under 1000 euros. The MacBook air retails for 950 and i have looked at several competing windows laptops. Dell G3 with i7 10th gen and rtx 3050, hp Evny with i5 16 gb ram . Idk what i should get. It should be durable and last me for atleast 5 years. What are your suggestions guys? Thank you in advance.

Which one should I go for ?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 09:17 AM PDT

I want to buy my first laptop but I am overwhelmed by all those options.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 09:06 AM PDT

I've always been a PC user. My needs have changed so will my device. Here are my needs:

I want it mainly for uni work, assignments, projects, programming, multitasking. Besides that Netflix, movies and browsing.

What I'm asking for: •A model with a good CPU. I need the pc to run smooth without struggling to handle slightly heavier tasks •Definitely an IPS panel.

Bonus: •14 inches •Light weight, easy to carry •Clean minimal look (like idea pads, MacBook, Huawei d14)

    Dell Inspiron 14 Ryzen 7 5825u

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 07:43 AM PDT

Hey guys I'm looking to buy a laptop. I'll be using it for work (internet browsing for research/Microsoft programs), light gaming, and streaming services. I tend to like 2 in 1s that are touch screen that have at least 16GB RAM. I also like smaller laptops so I liked that it was 14' inches. I stumbled across the dell Inspiron 14 a lot and I liked this one's look and the specs seem good, but it has no reviews on the best buy page and while looking online I didn't see anything. I saw very positive reviews for the one that had ryzen 7 5700u so I'm assuming this newer Ryzen 7 is better. What do you guys think?

Which do you think is the quietest and most reliable laptop out of the three?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 06:30 AM PDT

I'll do things like browse or edit photos and also play around a bit, but not much. I value reliability and silence. The specifications of each below...

    HP Omen 17 with Intel i7 12700H, 32GB, 1 TB SSD, RTX 3060, screen FHD 144Hz

    XMG Core 17 with AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, 16GB, 1 TB SSD, RTX 3060, screen QHD 165Hz

    Asus Strix 17 with AMD Ryzen 7 6800H, 16GB, 1 TB SSD, RTX 3060, screen FHD 360Hz

Upgrade i7 to i9 vs HD to 4k Dell XPS 15

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 05:42 AM PDT

Im thinking of purchasing the new Dell XPS 15 with the 12th gen Intel Chips. I have read online that the upgrade to the i9 is not worth it due to thermal issues.

Do you think it would be better to upgrade the XPS from the i7 12700H to i9 12900HK or the FHD+ to the 4k option?

    2-in-1 Laptop Keyboard Protector

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 05:39 AM PDT

    Hi everyone.

I have a HP Envy 2-in-1, but I haven't been using the touchscreen as much as I originally intended for drawing/sketching etc.

I'd like to start using it more but I'm a bit concerned about how I can protect the keyboard when it's folded over.

Is there a product that exists that you can rest your keyboard on it in such a way that the keys are protected? I've done a quick search online but can't think exactly what to search for.

    Thanks for any suggestions!

Is Acer Swift 3 a good laptop?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 05:30 AM PDT

I have an Acer Aspire 4752G that I bought in 2011. It still works fine but the age of it makes me think I should get a new laptop.

I'm looking at the Acer Swift 3. Does anyone have any reviews on it?

I'm also open to suggestions of laptops in a similar price range because I'm a poor student :(

I use my laptop for school work mostly.

    Laptop Sale Price

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 01:21 AM PDT

Hi, I am in the market for a new laptop and I am thinking of selling my current one. I would like to ask for any tips on a starting point for a price.

I have the Dell Inspiron 15 7559 4K laptop bought in 2016. Specs:

    • 6th Generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ
    • Nvidea GTX 960M
    • 16GB RAM
    • 4K 15.6" Touchscreen

I am a computer scientist, so the laptop is still in almost perfect condition and well looked after. Also, if it helps, I live in South Africa where laptop prices are quite high compared to other countries.

    2022 LG Gram 17 with 12th gen i7

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 08:40 PM PDT

    2022 LG Gram 17 with 12th gen i7

UPDATE: the following review were my first impressions. After messing with the Gram more, the Wi-Fi speed seemed to improve with the new driver and doing some LG updates. The CPU works well when the fan/cooling is set to "High" in LG Smart Assistant. BUT despite the max fan setting (which is a bit loud especially if you sit close to the laptop), the geekbench scores (see test 3 below) are a bit less than the Samsung and Lenovo laptops with the same processor. Overall, I think the i7 gets throttled due to insufficient cooling. The fan set to max will give a good result but be wary that it is rather loud.

Reviews: I just got mine in from Costco. Please take this review with a grain of salt because your experience might be different.

    Specs: Intel i7 1260p 12th generation processor, 32gb DDR5 RAM, 1TB SSD

TLDR: This thing is a POS out of the box. It may improve with software updates in the future. For me, I daytrade so I can't use a computer that's going to be sketchy. Back to costco this goes.

    Problems:
    1) wifi issues
The wifi card connected to my wifi fine, but everything is taking forever to download. Speedtest is saying 400mbps download but google chrome is taking 20 mins to download, which doesn't make sense. I tried the "Lg update" app that it comes with but that itself took 30 minutes to download 730 MB worth of updates. I went to intel's site and downloaded the newest wifi card driver, then installed that, which helped somewhat BUT downloads are still slow.

    2) CPU core speeds are slow **UPDATE: I used LG Smart assistant (their software) and set the cooling mode to "High" which I believe is max fan - see geekbench test 3. CPU results did improve and clock speeds were 1.8-3.1 ghz. \**
On windows 11 "best performance" mode while plugged in, the 12th gen i7 1260P clock speeds are 0.88-1.3 Ghz, which is drastically under the base speed of 2.10. ***I must've gotten a dud* Suprisingly after geekbench finished, the clock speeds were 2.49-3.1. I then ran a second test and the range of the clock speeds were 0.87-2.8.
I ran a geekbench and the results were atrocious:
    Test 1 - Single core 707, multicore 2809 https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/15265492
    Test 2 - Single core 929 , multicore 3254 https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/15265532
***Test 3 with LG assistant cooling set to High - single core 1444, 7280 multicore https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/15265647

These clock speeds are worse than other laptops with the 1260P (there's a samsung and another LG on geekbench).

In summary, the wifi card is glitchy and the CPU is being weird. Regarding the wifi, this might improve with driver updates. Regarding the CPU, I don't know if it is getting throttled or if I have a dud computer - the 2021 11th gen LG gram has subpar thermal performance due to only 1 fan (check youtube). It seems that the thermal system may not have been improved for this year's model.
