What is stopping you from a buying a budget phone?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 03:25 AM PDT

    Camera?

    Processor?

    High refresh rates?

    Wireless charging and IP rating?

for me personally camera was the most important aspect of the phone, Recently i got a pixel 4a and amazed at what a awesome phone it can be at a budget.

Decent battery life, amazing camera, punch hole display, headphone jack, 5.8 inch perfect size.

and most importantly software updates ,being a google phone. it will continue to get the update's and you don't have to break a bank for it.

    LGIMS Update

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 05:01 PM PDT

I just received a forced LGIMS update on my T-mobile branded LG V40. I guess it's their response to the bug a lot of LG device owners experienced last week. Nice to know that even though they're out of the mobile game at least LG is supporting what phones they still have operating, at least for the time being.

PSA: Some Tips if You Uncover a Leak like a Prototype Google Pixel Device

    Posted: 01 Jun 2022 04:02 PM PDT

Believe it or not, we've had a total of three physical Google Pixel prototype devices leak out this year and all three of them were either retrieved by or bricked by Google and all we have been able to do is see what it looks like on the outside.

    Why?

All of them failed to go through a journalist or content creator that has experience with leaks and only through them.

    1. The Google Pixel Watch leaks ended because it was posted on Reddit on a seasoned account rather than a sock puppet account. The leaker also provided information on where they lived as well as tons of identifying information within the photos they took. I was planning to fly out to the source and get high-quality images, video, and potentially more information on the device. Unfortunately, that came to an end because Google Retrieved the device.
    2. The Google Pixel 7 prototype actually wasn't listed on eBay first, but on Facebook Marketplace for over a week but labeled as Pixel 6. This one is a bit more nuanced because the seller had no idea what they had, but they had multiple units. The buyer is the one who informed the seller of what they were actually selling, which resulted in the seller listing it as a Pixel 7 prototype on eBay. Before we knew the seller listed it on eBay, and before anyone else found out, we were planning to take tons of photos, video, document settings, features, and even take photos and video from the phone. Unfortunately, because the buyer told the seller what they had, contacted the seller over a personal social media account, and paid through a trackable means, Google retrieved the device.
    3. The Google Pixel 7 Pro prototype that leaked out today came from the same seller as number 2. I know because I know where the seller generally lives and the 7 Pro came from the same area. This leak came to an end because the buyer of example 2 told the seller that it was a prototype and Google not only retrieved some of the devices but bricking the devices associated with that seller. This resulted in the buyer of the 7 Pro posting on r/GooglePixel. The images they posted also contained EXIF data that included where they took the photo. Google remotely wiped and bricked the Pixel 7 Pro.

Three major leaks, two of which I was seeking to get a deep dive into the device for the community, and all three were blocked by Google before we could do any of that.

Please, if you obtain any sort of leak or item that may be a prototype or anything leak worthy, contact a journalist or content creator that has experience on how to handle leaks so you are both protected, and so the community can benefit from the leak to the maximum amount. Many journalists and creators have their DMs open. Reach out to one that you trust and con protect your information.

    Some advice in advance:

    • Realize that buying private intellectual property can be legally problematic
      • Don't use a personal social media account, give out your phone number, or whatever to contact the buyer. Use a sock-puppet account (worth researching).
      • Cash and meeting in a public spot are ideal
      • Don't sell or profit from said device or leak or you can go from cops showing up at your door to being served and taken to court (from what I understand)*
      • Do not cross state lines with the device or the last point may become a reality as well (from what I understand)*
      • *None of this is legal advice. Consult a lawyer.
    • DO NOT CONNECT IT TO THE INTERNET OR SIGN INTO IT WITH YOUR PERSONAL GOOGLE ACCOUNT.
      • Unfortunately, you cannot use this as your personal phone. It's a collector's item or something to harvest information from. That's it. If you log into it with a normal account or use it, Google will contact you and ask for it back.
    • Cover up identifying markers and use a neutral background for any photos
    • Consult a journalist or content creator to walk you through the next steps. Going through a medium like this allows us to also catch things before we release it like personal identifying markers, EXIF location data, etc so that you are protected
    • Be urgent, but patient. Be urgent in contacting a journalist or content creator, but don't be impatient about releasing said information.
      • For leak number 2, the source took their time and we missed out on a lot of leaked information before it was retrieved by Google.
      • If you're impatient and posting stuff on Reddit without a plan or understanding of how to navigate things (leak 1 had considered profiting from having the Pixel Watch, which many thankfully warned him to not do), we all lose out.
    • Don't expect to profit from this in any way. This is how people get in serious trouble. You share this information with others to see it on the news, see people get excited about it, and secretly know that you were the reason for that, but no one else can know about it. Don't tell a bunch of your friends, your friend's kids, etc. (that seriously happens).
    • Being a leaker is an anonymous thing to protect you and prevent you from having someone show up at your door. You have to take it seriously because it gets that serious.

Anyways, this is my little PSA because the community has missed out greatly on a lot of leaks this year and it would be great if that didn't keep happening.

Again, please reach out to someone reputable that you trust if you have a leak and/or need advice.

*Correction, for 3. the buyer did not post the images resulting in the phone being bricked. It was bricked due to the actions of the buyer in example 2 resulting in Google likely bricking all of the devices associated with the seller in example 2.

Edit: some are a bit confused about not profiting off of a leaked device. This is based on how laws are set up more than anything. An early prototype or leak is private intellectual property. Because of that, profiting from it or crossing state lines would result in legal issues. A journalist or content creator cannot pay for the leak because of ethical reasons as well as legal issues as well.

Yes, journalists and content creators do benefit from making content on it, but it's the one way to protect the source while also providing information about the device to the community under protections that are given to journalistic works. I understand how this seems unfair and why it seems self-serving, but it's how things naturally play out within how things are designed.

If you want to try another method, you're welcome to do so, but I can say that all the leaks listed above resulted in someone showing up at their door and leaks ending. I'm not too sure it's working out well for the community. On top of that, if they profited off of it, they'd have to have a lawyer on top of that, so I'm merely the messenger.

Do what is most strategic for the community. We're all missing out big time because of what has happened this year alone.

    Google removing location based reminders

    Posted: 01 Jun 2022 06:40 PM PDT

So today I got a notification that Google is removing location based reminders. I had just set one in my assistant had decided to give my phone a notification talking about alternatives. It seems that the alternatives aren't written in that blog post yet, but I fear this is the end for location based reminders.
