This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Why you should Undervolt your GPU.

    Posted: 03 May 2022 08:11 AM PDT

    Consider undervolting your GPU.

Modern cards keep trying to boost as high as possible, generate a bunch of unnecessary heat, ramp the fans up to dissipate that heat, and end up clocking down slightly when they heat up to equilibrium.

With a modest undervolt the performance of your GPU should not change significantly (provided you don't overdo it), and you can significantly reduce heat output by reducing power draw, which in turn makes your fans spin slower, which means a quieter card.

A quick "how-to" undervolt on modern Nvidia GPUs (you may need to find a different guide for AMD)

1- Get MSI Afterburner and a GPU benchmark or game.

2- At stock settings, run the benchmark/game for a bit, and see what clock speed your GPU settles at when temperature is stable. Also note down power draw, temperature, fan RPM, and a performance metric (benchmark score / game FPS).

3- In MSI afterburner, open the curve editor. Lower the whole curve down (alt+drag), then pick a voltage to bring up to the clock your GPU settled at on step 2, and apply (the rest of the curve should adjust to that clock in a straight horizontal line). Edit: different instructions, leaves the point below your normal boost clock at a lower voltage. Thanks to u/BIueWhale for pointing this out: Select the voltage point you want to undervolt to on the curve, and alt-drag the whole curve up. Then, shift-click and drag the graph background to the right of that point to select the higher end the curve. Lower that part of the curve so that everything lies below your undervolt point. Hit apply, and the right side will flatten out. (visual aid)

With RTX-30 cards, they normally operate at ~1000mv, so you can start by going down in 25-50mv steps. For example, my card settled on 1905 to 1935 mhz at step 2, so I targeted 1905mhz at 950mv initially.

4- After applying the curve, re-run the same benchmark/game as step 2. See if there was improvements (lower temps, lower RPM) and no significant performance loss. If everything looks good, consider undervolting further by lowering the voltage again another step, and repeat the test. Eventually you'll run into instability. When you do, go back up one step (or two, to be extra safe).

EDIT2: Once you're happy with your undervolt, if using Afterburner, don't forget to save it to a profile, and click "Apply at Windows Startup" (the Windows logo on most Afterburner skins). Also set Afterburner to boot with Windows in the settings.

Here's an example of a quick undervolt on an RTX 3080:

Settings Port Royale Score Max Temp Fan% Power Draw
    Stock (1905mhz) 11588 73.6C 53% 378W
    1905mhz @925mv 11578 69.8C 47% 322W

As you can see, the score different is completely negligible, but temps are down ~4C with the fans running slower, all because the power draw is down ~56W.

TL;DR: Lower power draw = less heat generated = lower fan RPM = less noise. Take 20-30 minutes to dial in a stable undervolt

Any thoughts? It's been many years since I stopped actively keeping up with the PC building community, so I would be grateful to hear about any obvious mistakes.

    Main requirements were:

    • Small form factor is a must
    • Should easily handle any modern (and near future) game in 4k

I'm at my wits end. Constant BSOD. Someone help me. I feel I've tried everything.

    Posted: 03 May 2022 04:49 PM PDT

My PC keeps getting BSOD. Namely CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT and WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR.

I have checked all drivers are up to date, still BSOD.

I have tried to update my Windows as much as I can but it BSOD before it finishes the last few updates.

I have tried uninstalling Windows updates to see if that's the issue but it BSOD.

Replaced the RAM, replace the CMOS battery. Ran in safe mode. Did a Windows Memory Diagonstics all fine. Did a ram test, all fine. Set my bios to default, BSOD Turned various settings off one at a time in my BIOS like turbo mode, Intel step, visualisation, hyperthreading, adjusting fan speeds and more. No luck.

I leave the PC for 5 mins idle, it will BSOD every. Single. Time. Can someone please save me?

    Will I see a significant increase in FPS if I upgrade to i5 12400F or 5600x? (Ryzen 7 1700 + GTX 1070)

    Posted: 04 May 2022 12:27 AM PDT

I've been saving some money for a while, but it's not enough to get a new GPU, so I'm thinking of upgrading the CPU first, saw some tests and was impressed with 5600x and i5 12400f.

Though I only game on 1080p and they're mostly AAA games that are GPU-intensive. (RDR2, particularly, I can't reach stable 60fps on 1080p medium). The GPU itself can reach 90-99% GPU usage when playing RDR2 (according to MSI afterburner).

I've watched some benchmarks of Ryzen 7 1700 vs Ryzen 5 5600X, and Ryzen 7 1700 vs i5 12400F, but they're always paired with either RTX 3080 or 3070ti most of the time, nothing close to my old 1070. I noticed that the RTXs can squish more GPU usage when paired with 5600x or 12400f so that explains the performance increase, but I don't know about my 1070 since I think it's meeting its limits after 6 years

So, if I upgrade to either of them, but still keep my 1070, will I see any performance increase? Or should just keep my CPU for now?

And no, I don't play CPU-bound games like R6s or Valorant, though I'm sure those games will definitely see an increase in FPS

Edit: my motherboard is Gigabyte Ab-350m Gaming 3, it does support 5600x via bios update it seems (I just checked the official site for it)

First PC build in 8 years!

    Posted: 03 May 2022 06:43 PM PDT

After being a console gamer for years, I decided to do a PC build. Keen for feedback, I like a clean aesthetic and not that into RGB. The only thing annoying me is the PCI-E power cable for the GPU, any thoughts?

    Specs:

    Ryzen 5600x

    32GB RAM

    3070Ti

    Lian Li O11 Air Mini

Updated now with 2 separate cables to be safe and re-routed them:

Are Micro ATX Builds Not That Popular Anymore?

    Posted: 03 May 2022 06:45 PM PDT

Basically what the title says. I'm planning to build my first PC ever using the i5-12400. I've been searching around PC builds and lately, I've seen more and more atx builds rather than micro atx builds. What I was visioning was I plan on putting my PC on the desk right next to my monitor and speakers, though it may not have enough room for a ATX mid size case.

Do people still actually build micro-atx PCs nowadays? I've ordered the Corsair 4000d but it may be to large for my setup that I want. Are there still any good micro atx cases that are smaller and have decent airflow?

Crashes since upgrading to windows 11 and still after reverting to windows 10

    Posted: 03 May 2022 11:08 PM PDT

Hi, so 2 days ago I upgraded my cpu and mobo and today I decided to upgrade to windows 11. After I did I started noticing weird crashes in all my games and apps like valorant crashing saying my display drivers aren't current but I've updated them in geforce experience and even tried uninstalling then reinstalling them, or chrome crashing, or cinebench crashing etc. Since this only happened after I upgraded to windows 11 I went back to windows 10, but now I'm still having the same issues of the crashes. Is there any way to fix this? I can give any extra info you need, I am ocing to 5ghz on p cores and 4ghz on e cores, but I've tried without ocing and still get these same issues. Here is the list of my build for reference https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Nj628r

Edit: To add this is the error I get from Chrome when it crashes STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION and when cinebench crashes its https://i.imgur.com/SjDUeiY.png and valorant https://i.imgur.com/OHs5ew8.png

Wtf is wrong with my PC?

    Posted: 03 May 2022 11:08 PM PDT

I've had a very annoying issue with my computer for probably about six months now, where it will randomly restart out of nowhere. I have reseated all of my components, and even RMA'd my PSU since I hadn't had it very long. The restarting still occurred even after putting in the new PSU. I had posted on either here or r/pcmasterrace, and they said that my issue likely stems from my motherboard. I just installed a new motherboard about a week ago, and my computer just restarted again. I've also checked for thermal throttling, and everything appears to be fine. I am at a complete loss.

The Parblo PR100 Tablet Stand can be cannibalized for a cheap easel type adjustable VESA stand

    Posted: 03 May 2022 11:00 PM PDT

There's a highly underappreciated type of monitor stand you can find on drawing monitors like the Huion Kamvas GT191 or some Wacom Cintiqs. These are great for setups where you have one monitor set up below another that is on an arm - as they allow for perfect tilt control and extremely low heights (most good tilt control stands will add inches of height, this reduces that to zero)

These are pretty difficult to buy separately and compatibility is usually not well defined as these stands are typically made for particular model numbers.

The Wacom Cintiq Adjustable Stand for instance typically costs $100 and is only verified to work with the 16" Cintiq.

I just wanted to make an informational post that the Parblo PR100 consists of such a 75x75 mm Vesa stand attached to an easel and this can be removed to be used with any monitor with such a Vesa mount. I've tried it out with a 20 inch monitor and though it is a bit small it works perfectly.

Note: You might need separate slightly longer screws as the included screws are shorter than typical VESA mount screws.

This usually costs $30-50 and is usually easier to find than alternates.

Is it still the case that you shouldn't use more than 75% of the SSD for optimal performance?

    Posted: 03 May 2022 10:25 PM PDT

because it thats stil the case, that sounds like a good amount of wasted (unused) space for a 1TB SSD (or NVME)

What I'm planning to do is, to get a new PC case with a few case fans, a new motherboard, and transfer everything else from the old to the new. In my head, it seems to work out fine given I don't use too many fans so it doesn't go over my PSU wattage. Will it end up working?

Which bay to use to install SSD

    Posted: 04 May 2022 01:35 AM PDT

I'm kinda new to PC build but I ordered a SSD (you might've seen my last post) to upgrade the PC a little. I have figured out most of the stuff but while searching for HDD and SSD trays, I found that there is apparently another bay below the DVD drive. Now this is a dumb question but worth the shot, is it fine if I put it in either of the bays? And what's the size of the normal bay in which the HDD is located? So I can search the tea size accordingly. Thank you :D
