VirturalBox Fedora Linux Or runnining it on my actual desktop?

    Posted: 04 May 2022 07:30 PM PDT

I was just wondering what is a better way of learning Fedora Linux, just straight using Virtural Box to emulate it or to actually put it on a flash drive and try to do an actual live boot and learn it that way?

    MSI B550 & Ubuntu

    Posted: 04 May 2022 03:57 PM PDT

I'm planning on switching from Windows 10 to Ubuntu 22.04 in the next couple days. I have an MSI B550 Tomahawk (not sure the specific one) with a Ryzen 7 5700g APU and 24 GB RAM, with a Realtek 2.5G ethernet card. I've read posts - from 2020 and 2021, granted - that the B550 boards and Realtek cards have issues with Ubuntu and Mint. Is this still the case, or will I need to upgrade the Kernel or anything when switching over? Thanks in advance!

    Zen kernel differences?

    Posted: 05 May 2022 12:44 AM PDT

Im using EndeavourOS and i see that i can change kernel quickly and easily, and zen kernel caught my eyes. I look around internet and says it's an optimized kernel than standard kernel, but some people also said that zen kernel are obsolete now that standard kernel is good already. Is it true and is it worth to change to zen kernel?

Where to install Linux in dual boot (windows 11)

    Posted: 04 May 2022 09:59 AM PDT

I would like to dual boot on my desktop pc (the hardware is top notch, so no hardware stability issue)

But is there a difference (stability/risk of file loss during the use/corruption during the installation/ etc) between installing them in the same drive or in two separate?

I have 2 x wd sn 850 black nvme ssd m.2 (1tb each). The first one (connected to the processor) aka main pcie storage slot, with windows (my only os for now). About 560 gb free

The second is connected to the z690 chipset, it is allocated (usable in windows but never used, I can format it and misallocate without problem) which is completely free.

So to dual boot windows and Linux:

Should I partition the first one (the windows one) and use only that for both os, or should I use the second one (the fact that is tied to the chipset and not the cpu will cause problem?)

If I should use the second drive, should I remove the first one during installation just to make sure that the pc doesn't touch the windows drive at all?

P.s yes I know I can also use virtual machine but with the hardware that I have (i9 12900k, rtx 3080 ti, the best ssd that you can find now, 64 gb ram I feel like virtual machine wouldn't use my system full potential)

    Thanks for everything

    Rofi Error Message

    Posted: 04 May 2022 06:23 PM PDT

When using the drun menu and typing an application that isn't actually within the list of applications, after typing return the window changes location and shows an error message (as in the video). I was wondering if this also happens to others and if so then if there is a way to modify this behavior. Maybe to prevent the window from moving and to supress the error message?

How to split Ethernet connection in two?

    Posted: 05 May 2022 12:05 AM PDT

You see, in my dorm, most of us have this daisy chain of PCs passing Internet through Ethernet ports from one to the other.

But wanting to use samba on a private interface and IP, I want to find out if (nm-connection-editor) for example, there is a way to split a physical Ethernet interface and share Internet via DHCP, but also a private interface and IP for samba and other communications via same Ethernet device?

AMDGPU fan speed stays 0 RPM in lm_sensors

    Posted: 04 May 2022 11:47 PM PDT

    Hello!!

The GPU Fan is always 0RPM, however, I know the fan is running, when I adjust fan on corectrl I can hear the fan speed up but on lm-sensors it always shows as 0 RPM. The fan speed did show correctly at one point but I don't know when it stopped showing the fan speed. Any ideas?

YubiKey USB-C or USB-A with Linux, is here any difference?

    Posted: 04 May 2022 03:31 PM PDT

I have a question about ports. Is any difference between USB-C and USB-A in any Linux OS? I mean, I prepare to buy Yubikey and I think what type should I use. Are any advantages or disadvantages? And what if I will, must use adapter, Linux don't have any problem with that?

Fedora creates a new boot instance every time I updated it

    Posted: 04 May 2022 03:13 PM PDT

As the title says, every time I upgrade fedora (at least until now and through GUI) it creates a new entry on the boot list. I installed Fedora yesterday, and when it finished installing it had some updates to do, I did and it create another entry, not today it had another update and happened the same thing, is this a Fedora feature or am I missing something? BTW I have windows on dual boot, not sure if can interfere with something tho

Do I need to name my public RSA key to "authorized_keys" in ~/.ssh folder?

    Posted: 04 May 2022 09:53 PM PDT

It seems that this is common practice after reading through the unedited /etc/ssh/sshd_config file. By default it has this line commented out:

    AuthorizedKeysFile %h/.ssh/authorized_keys

and from other threads this also seems to be the case but I would like to know where does this file come from because ssh-keygen command generates id_rsa and id_rsa.pub files by default.

If I were to specify a different expected "AuthorizedKeysFile" in the sshd_config file, would it play nicely with the ssh daemon or is it going to break? Is it required to name the public key "authorized_keys" as shown in the unedited sshd config file?

How chatty is a light weight version of Linux when it comes to using the internet?

    Posted: 04 May 2022 09:20 PM PDT

Let's say you had a headless version of Debian that was connected to the internet and you let it sit there for a day. How much data would it use without any human interaction?

The reason I ask is id love to setup a raspberry pi with cellular data that charges by the MB and wouldn't want to see a month later a bill for like $1200.

Has anyone tested how often it hits the internet? And the best ways maybe to isolate a network interface for a specific application, user or group.
