I already have a calculator Tech Support

I already have a calculator Tech Support

    I already have a calculator

    Posted: 04 May 2022 11:17 PM PDT

Another story reminded me of this story. It happened in 1998 when I had a side job in IT with an accounting firm. I'll be ME and Senior Partner will be SP. Details are fuzzy, I will enhance the story fro joy.

Me: "Here you go, this is how you open the notebook, switch it on and log in. Do you want me to show you how to start the applications?"

I already knew that he hadn't been to the mandatory training class for the transfer from Windows 3.1 to Windows 98. You see, partners and especially senior partners don't have time for that.

SP: "Yes please, I want to know where I can find all the applications I need.

"Me: "Well, you click the start button and you can move the mouse like this to expand the menu to see all applications." SP: "Good, show me all these applications."

I am thinking by myself: "Oh god, no, he wants me to open all the apps one by one? Let's hope he doesn't have too many questions about all the apps, he won't be using notepad and wordpad because we have MS Word etc."

Me: "Okay, let's see we have the calculator here ..."

SP: "Wait. What, why does it have a calculator, I already have one that works perfectly fine!"

He points at his desk to the calculator sitting at his desk. It's a fancy one with more options that the built-in one that comes with Windows 98.

Me: "Well, it comes standard with Windows, if you don't want to use it then you can just use your current calculator."

SP: "It's not about that. It's about why did you guys purchase new calculators when everybody already has one. I will have to carry it around with me and it takes disk space."

"Please lord help how do I escape from this..."

Me: "It won't take that much disk space and doesn't add any extra weight, but I could remove it for you if you want. It comes standard with Windows like the default options you would have on a car which you may or may not use like spare bulbs for instance. Some people use those, others bring their car to the garage to have bulb fixed."

SP: "Yes please remove the calculator."

He seems pleased with my answer. I proceed to remove calc.exe and delete the shortcut. This is going to be a long sitting.

Me: "Here we have Notepad. It is a really basic text editor which you will probably never use, it is a bit similar to the calculator as in it coming as a default option. You have a better text editor also. Should I remove this one also?"

SP: "Yes please go ahead. Why are these applications there anyway if there are better ones also installed. I don't understand how you guys do this, you are costing us way too much money already."

I silently go ahead and remove notepad.exe and the shortcut. I decide to first show him MS Word as he would have been using that on Windows 3.1.

Me: "This is Word. It's a new version as the old version does no longer work on Windows 98. It looks a bit different but you can use it similar to the old Word and also will be open the documents you created on the old computer."

    SP: "Good."

Me: "This is Wordpad. It's like another basic text editor but a bit more fancy that the Notepad we deleted earlier but not as advanced as MS Word. It can also open and edit Word documents."

SP: " Wait. So we have Wordpad which can do most things Word can do but we still go ahead and buy Word licenses. I need to have a word with the people who run your departments, this is getting out of hand."

    Me: "Yes but ...."

I was lost for words. I a sense I could not disagree with him but it was outside my power to change how Microsoft does this. I continued explaining all the apps but the conversations stayed similar so I will cut the story here but it was a long sitting...

The annoying work from home card

    Posted: 04 May 2022 03:13 PM PDT

I never tought that the time i worked as tech support would come in handy, so here is my story.

We had to migrate our entire fleet of laptops from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and we'd have to give a new laptop to the users that had a laptop older than 3 years.

There comes this user, we'll call her E, and we have to change her laptop. I finish moving all her stuff from one laptop to another and I hand it to her. She inspects it, all fine and dandy, then she asks:

E: I had a work from card in the old laptop, did you put it in the new one? Me: I didnt see any card, are you sure you had it? E: Yes! And proceeds to show me that the card was indeed in the old laptop, but it was cut with a pair of scissors because "it was sticking out and it annyed her"

I had to take the whole thing appart and get it out, cause i couldn't reach it with anything.

The dregs of humanity works here?

    Posted: 05 May 2022 07:21 AM PDT

    Hello folks!

I know it has been quite a few years, but the Backwoods Tech is back with some new strange but true tales. A few years back, I started over from scratch, and have worked my way up the ladder at my current job. It is IT in the financial sector - so for those of you getting yelled at because every penny is precious - I salute you.

Anyway, this tale goes back to the beginning of my time with this company, just a few months after I hired. A user calls in to the desk and asks for some help. I get remoted onto his PC so that I can transfer over the tool he asked for and show him how to use it. Nothing unusual so far.

On the software transfer, instead of selecting the Desktop folder in the user profile, I accidentally selected the Documents folder. Misclicks happen and it is a quick fix. So I hop out of the file transfer side of the remote software and into the desktop interface side.

I then navigate to User's Documents folder and I cannot find the file I transferred. This user's Documents folder is full of thousands of subfolders and documents. I go to sort by date so I can find the tool I transferred over.

    I found the tool.

I also found a whole lot more. More than I ever bargained for and thought I wouldn't have to deal with again (I have another tale on here about a very similar issue that I posted many years back).

The folder was full of "adult images'. On the user's company provided PC. Normally that is a screenshot, attach to ticket, an refer to their manager for discipline for misuse of company resources. Only this time, it wasn't just the "normal stuff'. It was a folder full of "adults doing unspeakable acts with very underage children". With who knows how many subfolders containing who knows what else.

I muted myself and called over to my boss in a bit of a harsh manner "Hey, you need to get over here and see this, NOW!".

Boss was confused, as I never made demands and had always been extremely courteous and polite. Boss walks over. Bosses eyes go wide. Both hands over their mouth and boss goes pale.

Boss whispers to me "Finish out call as normal, give no indication you saw anything out of the ordinary. I'm getting security and the authorities on this now!"

I finish the call out a few minutes later, when I hear the user protesting being handcuffed by police. While I do not know what officially happened to the user (in a legal sense), I do know I was tasked with processing said user's access termination request later that day.

Thus, a new office story that is still passed around by other techs to this day, was born.

Hopefully, as I find some time in the future, I'll be able to tell you all some of the following stories:

User who refuses to speak to men

Physically Violent User Part 1: The day I saw multiple coworkers cry and walk off the job

Physically Violent User Part 2: Can you help me undo a very stupid and legally questionable thing I did?

Physically Violent User Part 3: Proper type of measurement for Crocodile tears

User who had their laptop stolen HOW?

    And many more to come.
