Posted: 30 May 2022 02:17 PM PDT My wife and I moved into our house about 5 years ago. It came with a ruckus mesh network with access points. From the modem there is an Arrakis 110 series VPN router, a net gear PoE box and a Ruckus Zonedirect 1100. We have three PoE access points around the house that are Zoneflex 7363. The Ruckus ZD and ZF products are end of life, according to the website. It was installed by a very expensive service that used to manage the network, but we cannot afford them or their new subscription, however the network has not been updated in almost ten years. Our internet is sometimes great, but most times spotty. My Nintendo Switch will only connect to the access point in the room I set it up. We pay for 400mbps from Spectrum, but average about 20-30 on any given speed test. I am wondering if I should rip out the entire old system and install an Orbi or Asus mesh network. If I get the Orbi or Asus router, can I plug the satellites into the PoE access points, or do they have to be Wi-Fi? I have tried to find more modern ruckus access points but the Ruckus ones are $400-$1500 each and I do not know how to manage the network that is in place through. Any advice? [link] [comments]
Best way to showcase personal projects and progress online? Posted: 30 May 2022 05:25 PM PDT Hi Guys, I have been working as a junior network engineer for the past 6 months I have learned quite a bit ranging from setting up my lab with an old server. Self hosting a lot of things, hosting dockers, playing with gsn3 to create simulated network topologies for various images ex. mikrotik, fortinet, ruckus etc. Create vpn tunnels, firewall rules and all the things in between. I have been also heavily getting into security and practicing my network scanning and vulnerabilities scanning and playing with SIEMs monitoring my home network and friend's network ( with permission ), hackthebox etc. - My question is how do I document all this in a way to show my progress and projects? - I have my own domain where I have a static site hosted but I want to see if there is any other better solution where I create simple and quick blog and write about my projects and just change the nameservers for my domain and point the blog to my domain. - Can I in any way utilize github? maybe put my network configs after removing sensitive IP info there/ Appreciate any help. Thanks! [link] [comments]
200Mbps spectrum cable internet, Recommended modem channels? Posted: 30 May 2022 05:16 PM PDT Normal home setup with lots of smart devices and gaming. how many channels is enough? Am I going to see any difference between a $65 16x4 vs a $120 32x8? Should I just buy the $65 and put the rest of the money towards a better router? Thanks [link] [comments]

Need help changing my IP address on Macbook Air Posted: 30 May 2022 04:55 PM PDT I tried logging into my gaming website (I use the forums), and it says I am banned for having multiple accounts. I have been a member since 2010 and definitely don't have multiple accounts, so I think it's a mistake. Does anyone know the simplest way of changing my IP address (or whatever else I need to do) to be able to access this website again? I tried using my Norton Antivirus VPN, but that didn't work. I tried googling this, but I have had no luck. Please keep in mind that I am not very computer savvy, so any help would be appreciated!! Thanks so much!! [link] [comments]
New house build - help with optimal solution Posted: 30 May 2022 04:34 PM PDT Hi all! I'm new to home networking, and I'm not very tech savvy. I live in Tokyo, Japan, and I am currently building a new home. It is 3 stories (concrete basement, 1F and 2F is timber structure). I am planning to use NURO fiber, and the ONT will be situated on 2F. NURO doesn't allow me to change the router, or to put the router into bridge mode. The house will be wired with Ethernet (I will ask for cat 6a). There are Ethernet points near every TV, and also in the home office on 1F. The house is around 2000 sq ft. I will be using a Nest doorbell and cameras on the perimeter. I want to create super-fast and reliable wi-fi network, ideally a mesh network. Can you please advise on optimal networking solution, as well as what brand of mesh wi-fi to use? I was originally planning on using Nest wifi, but understand that it doesn't work well on bridge mode(?). I'm leaning towards Netgear, but I can't for the life of me understand the difference between Nighthawk and Orbi. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Reccomendations for 4g backup? Posted: 30 May 2022 04:25 PM PDT Hey all. I have an ASUS router which has the ability to failover to a 4G USB device upon disconnection of the main WAN interface. Im looking at getting a 4G dongle and have just ordered an additional data sim from our mobile provider to use with it. My question is, has anybody used an actual 4g wifi hub as a failover device rather than just a 4g dongle? My thinking is, wth a dongle, thats great it can be used as a backup connection for the router. However with a 4g mobile hotspot, when we go on holiday, i can take it with me in my bag and use it as a proper wifi network when we are somewhere which doesn't have wifi, without needing to use one of our phones as a hostpot. My primary goal here is backup for our main internet line, however if its possible to use a 4G wifi hub in a dongle-like capacity, i'll get one of those and have the best of both worlds. ADSL/VDSL modem with 5g failover Posted: 30 May 2022 04:16 PM PDT ADSL/ADSL2+ modem with 5g sim slot, load balance or fail over. Hi I am moving soon, away from a Virgin media area in UK to a BT provided (or a reseller of some kind) broadband. I have no desire to change any of my current physical setup when I arrive and have always just used the virgin media router in modem mode. From what I gather I will need to get a dsl modem, since most of the local providers to not have a modem mode. Clearly I could just get the draytek vigour 130 and I have it on good authority this will work just fine. BUT I got to looking around and found the Draytek Vigor 2620Ln . This little beast has 4G sim slots, load balancing DSL input dual Ethernet connections to LAN all kinds of good stuff. EXCEPT 5G. Which right now seems a bit odd. And I can't find a 5G model. So here's the question. Anyone know of any 5G equivalent to this? A 5G failover or load balance with a BB connection or in fact some smart routing given our household usage would be great. I just need the kit to provide. [link] [comments]

Certain devices will only connect to 2.4GHz, not 5GHz Posted: 30 May 2022 02:21 PM PDT What the title says. Recently got an Asus GT-AC2900. Certain devices like my PC and my Pixel 6 work fine on both bands, but my wife's iPhone and my PS4 will only connect to the 2.4, not 5g. We tried connecting closer to the router but still says "Cannot connect to this device." Any ideas why this would happen? Didn't have this problem with my last router, which was older and cheaper. Posted: 30 May 2022 02:15 PM PDT Hello! Is it safe(secure to make a VPN for a single computer via software, with like openVPN community edition, instead of buying a router only for vpn? Then could i create an ftp server (such with Filezilla Server) that works with the VPN? They all are safe and secure on connecting/data transfer? Thank you [link] [comments]
ASUs ZenWifi XT8 - unknown device notifications? Posted: 30 May 2022 02:13 PM PDT Does anyone know if it's possible to be notified whenever a device, or a certain device, joins (rejoins) my wifi network? I want to use as a way of notifying me that our nanny has arrived. I have the Asus IOS app and thus would prefer to be notified via the app, ideally. [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 May 2022 10:19 AM PDT Yesterday, I was installing a lot of mods for Battlefront II on my PC, and I noticed that my internet and even PC was getting really slowed down by it. The downloads failed and my ethernet went down. I restarted my router, PC, network connection, everything, and I don't know what to do. My PC says the Ethernet Cable isn't plugged in though it is, yet the lights aren't lighting up. And yes, the cable is connected to the router. Is there anything else I could do? Protecting gear connected to a exterior Ethernet run? Posted: 30 May 2022 09:50 AM PDT Hi all, I recently moved into a home that has Verizon FIOS. The previously installed ONT is on the outside of the home (inside a waterproof and grounded enclosure) with normal CMR + plastic RJ45 heads on a run of about 45 feet into my home. It's pretty common for the ONT to be outside, sure I could figure out a way to run the fiber inside and eliminate the exterior Ethernet all together but for the time being I wanted to know what I need to do to protect my equipment that's inside? (I know a direct lighting strike you're pretty much toast no matter what). Do I replace the Ethernet run with a shielded CMX rated Cat6 cable with metal RJ45 jacks and run that into some kind of surge protector like the Ubiquity ETH-SP-G2 and call it a day? Or is there more to this? I plan to mount a few more exterior devices like cameras and an access point on the side of the home (no mast installs) one day too. What's the right way to do this? Thanks. Posted: 30 May 2022 01:21 PM PDT I have an EERO pro 6 around 4 feet away from my computer with no objects in between, but I am experiencing packet loss, such as 50%, or sometimes 25% or at A high of 75%. Anybody know a fix? [link] [comments]
RT-AX86U - 5GHZ in WiFi 6 Enabled mode not accessible on my Acer Laptop Posted: 30 May 2022 01:08 PM PDT I just bought the router above, my old router was Asus RT-AC68U without similar problems. I followed everything on the link Asus provided (Compatibility issues FAQ) installed the Killer pack incl. driver, didn't help. Then I found some forums where people wrote uninstall that sh*t, so I removed everything with the Killer Removal Tool to try maybe it helps, then Wifi stopped working totally, no other driver option was available in the Win10 Pro as update. I found a relevant topic here on Reddit, done everything they suggest, no result :( 5GHZ Channel set to 40Hz, channel 36, so it's sure DFS channels are skipped. Read a lots of forums in the past days, I'm giving up :( Any help would be really appreciated from the PRos here. [link] [comments]
Turn off QoS for full gigabit Internet speeds on Asus ROG AXE-11000 Posted: 30 May 2022 08:49 AM PDT This might apply to more than just the ROG AXE-11000, but if you upgrade to Gigabit fiber and are expecting to see those glorious high speeds in an online speed test, make sure you disable QoS first. Asus has it on by default (I know I never turned it on) and set to bandwidth limiter. I ended up having to have a technician come out to troubleshoot, which in the end he simply advised that I use the company provided router to avoid issues (not really a solution). I came across this post below and thought I might have the same issue, and sure enough QoS was turned on. I flipped it off and immediately went from being capped at about 550Mb/s up and down, to the full gigabit speeds. I ended up spending a week not sending juicy screenshots to my friends until I got this issue resolved. Got suggestions for a new ASUS Router and NAS for Media Server? Posted: 30 May 2022 12:27 PM PDT Hi All, for about the past 5 years I've been using my ASUS Router with a hard drive plugged into its USB port. I've used it as a place to backup files and access MP3 and MP4 files on my Roku and Playstation. To be honest once I got it up and running, I've hardly logged-in to the router (it's been years) The other night I was having issues accessing files (ASUS Media Server wasn't appearing) and after a reboot and poking around, it appears that router hasn't updated it's firmware in over a year. I tried to update, but the server won't download it. So, instead of doing figurative surgery on my aging router, I figure I'll just update everything. I'd like your suggestions for a mid-priced ASUS Router (Our router needs are modest My wife and I do office work from home, most bandwidth is used for streaming TV with a little gaming.), and a NAS with two hard drives (to mirror eachother) that I can use to back-up files and use to access mp3 and mp4 files from multiple devices. Looking for a solution to get rid of 100’ Ethernet cable. Posted: 30 May 2022 08:27 AM PDT Okay so I just moved into a new house. The only place to hook up the router is downstairs in the living room. It is a 2900 sq ft house. We currently have 500/500GB internet on fios. (Not quite sure what we're actually getting. My roommate is in the farthest room away and gets basically no WI-FI to his PC. He games heavily and streams when he does (he actually makes pretty decent money off it.) Right now we have a 100' Ethernet cable coming from his room down a hallway, some stairs and run across the living room directly to the router. Is there a router or network I can set up that will give him good enough internet to stream and game at the same time? We're currently running a smart TV, 2 PC's, 3 cell phones, and 2 laptops. Never had any issues with the others working on the Wi-Fi. Thanks for the help! [link] [comments] |
