Looking for a 2-1 laptop for work

Looking for a 2-1 laptop for work

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 01:02 AM PDT

I'm an engineer, mostly working on autocad, office, teams and web browsing, looking for a 2-in-1 laptop to do my work, including some drawing and PDF/Word reviewing. I've been looking at the Microsoft's Surface series but most reviews say those laptops are less powerfull than other on the same price range.

My price range is around 2.000,00€

Looking for a laptop that can run most games and that will stay relevant for the next 5 years.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 08:31 PM PDT

My current laptop is an Acer Aspire E15 which I bought during a Black Friday sale(around 500USD) more than 5 years ago. It has a GeForce940MX with 2GB VRAM and 8 GB RAM , 256GB SSD. It has worked quite well for me with everything. I used to play League of legends and Overwatch but recently I guess maybe the games have been getting heavier or just simply my laptop is nearing it's end of life. I also recently started using a second monitor so I guess that's kinda pushing my laptop to the max. I'm looking something to replace this laptop so I'd like it to be better in almost every aspect.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Im looking for something between 100,000 yen to 150,000 yen (I might buy it in the US so something from 800USD to 1100USD should be good enough to keep it under 150,000 yen total with tax and shipping)

Are you open to refurbs/used? Not really, although if it's a good deal I don't mind.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Battery life is not an issue since I plan to use it at home most times. Performance is important ,

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Doesn't matter at all

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

The bigger the better, my current laptop has 15.6 inches so any smaller than that and it might be hard to use as a second monitor.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I generally play league of legends/overwatch but I'd like to be able to run most available games at a decent fps 60+ I think I'd also benefit from a very fast processor since I'd like to train some AI's for learning more about it.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Don't know but it would be nice to play single player games with a high FPS and high settings. Like maybe Cyberpunk 2077 , the witcher, horizon zero dawn. I'm hoping to get a PS5 one day so it's not super important though.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I plug a keyboard, mouse and mic to my laptop everyday so at least 3 USB slots and maybe a thunderbolt would be nice to have. A numpad as well would be nice.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Buying advice

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $1100-$1800 (preferably in the 1500s)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I'm looking for good battery life (nothing crazy but avoiding xps-like). I want a portable powerful computer, thin and well built. I'd also like a nice screen, I'm trying to avoid plastic bezels.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    I'm looking for a portable 13-14 lightweight

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Between 13 and 14 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Light gaming, engineering softwares and a lot of browsing, multitasking + Spotify etc. Sometimes about 50+ chrome tabs

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Light gaming, Minecraft, Sims and maybe sometimes games like War Thunder or some not heavy simulators. (No limits 2)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I don't use touch screens. I like good inputs but I'm willing to give up on that. I like a good sturdy keyboard and a computer that just feels well built.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I was going to buy the XPS 9310 but there's only touch 3.5K screens available and the battery life of that just puts me off. I found the FHD screen on Amazon but the battery life is still very poor. I also thought of the ZenBook 14(or 13), there are many, OLED, normal, 16:9,16:10, intel, AMD, Nvidia. So I don't know what I'll need. It does have poorer build quality.

Some of the models I've seen and considered:

    New XPS: (9310) i7 1185G7, Intel Iris Xe, 16gb RAM, 512gb ssd 13,4" OLED/LCD touch 4K (hay en amazon version 1900x1200)

XPS: (9305) i7-1165G7, Intel Iris Xe, 16gb ram, 512gb ssd 13,3" FHD No touch

    Zenbook 14 (UM425) Ryzen 7 5800H, Radeon Vega 7, 16gb ram, 1tb ssd 14" FHD

    Zenbook S i7-1165G7, 16gb ram, 1tb ssd 13,9"touch 4K

    Zenbook 13 (UM325) Ryzen 7 5700U 13,3"OLED FHD

    Zenbook 14X(UX 5400) i7-1165G7, Nvidia MX450, 512gb ssd, 16gb ram 14"OLED touch 4K

    Zenbook 13 (UX325) i7-1165G7, Intel Iris Xe, 16gb ram, 512gb ssd 13.3" FHD

I know there are many more: HP envy, spectre etc but haven't looked yet.

Looking at and interested in Refurbs, low budget general use laptop. 13"+, 2-in-1, >$280, US. Very Open to Suggestions.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 02:33 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $280, US.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Absolutely. I am compelled most by refurbs after searching Newegg. From what I can tell, it's the seller that makes or breaks when purchasing a refurb/open-box/used. But getting an i5, 8gb ram, and better all around at $280? Yes, please.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Open to any suggestion, but prioritizing 2-in-1 and battery. Open to anything overall. $280 is a low budget so we will take what we can get.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Meh, N/A.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Bigger. 15" would be nice (although, I haven't seen a convertible/2-in-1 at 15" while briefly searching) Media will be one of the main things it is used for.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Nope. Basically web browsing and movie streaming. Word processing. Gaming is not a priority.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

It would be nice if it could run Minecraft on medium/low for my son, but really, the focus is going to be for watching media, surfing web, and documents/email.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Backlit keyboard/touchpad would be nice, but not a big deal. Webcam necessary. Optical drives would be welcomed, but not necessary.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Essentially the laptop will be mainly used by Grandma to do clerical stuff for work and home, watch Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, Disney+, and whatever-else+. If the laptop is also able to play Minecraft at medium to low settings, that would be just a selfish wish for me haha. I could see my son also playing some Roblox and Fortnite on the machine as well. Originally Grandma purchased a HP, Model 14-dq3015cl from Costco, and I told her that it will not meet her demands. Lo'n'Behold once it was up and running, it could barely stream and was swamped in Microsoft bloat (S-mode, easy fix, but still). Extremely slow/poor performance, despite what felt like a solid chasis. I have had really negative experiences with HP laptops that have had eMMC storage. So it is being returned and I figured I would ask you wonderful people.

Looking for recommendations for the elusive thin, light and powerful Ryzen 6000 laptop. BUDGET Ideally 1500$ but flexible. REGION - USA/INDIA can buy from both

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 01:36 AM PDT

Hi, I am looking for a Ryzen 6000 series laptop that is powerful but has a small form factor (13/14 inches) and light weight (max 1.7/1.8 kgs).

Primary use case is business (long excel spreadsheets), multitasking etc. But secondary use case would be media consumption so a good screen (QHD) would be good to have.

The Asus Zephyrus G14 (2022) seems to fit the bill spec wise (AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS, 16GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, AMD Radeon RX 6700S, 14" WQXGA 120Hz) and is not too heavy (1.7kgs) but it is quite expensive.

Any other suggestions that fit the required use case and specs?

Looking for laptop suggestion - $2k or under, purchasing in US

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 06:31 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
I'm willing to spend up to $2k USD, though I'd really prefer something in the $1500ish USD or below range. Purchasing in the US.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Would prefer new
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, build quality, battery life, form, in order of importance
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not super concerned as my current work laptop is a 17" unit. I'd prefer something in the 15" range but it doesn't need to be ultra portable. This laptop will mostly just be sitting at home and coming with me for occasional travel.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Yes, but light gaming - turn-based and strategy games, nothing intensive.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Probably just Civ, Command & Conquer, those sort of games.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Definitely would want a decent touchpad and a built-in webcam.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
For some context, I'm hoping to use this for some independent contractor work, light gaming, and day-to-day personal use (internet browsing, streaming stuff). I don't think my contractor work will be too intensive as I'm mostly doing browser-based work and Excel, and not large Excel data sets either (100k and under). I'm willing to invest in something that's durable and will last me.
