Trouble creating a bash script with multiple command line arguments Posted: 29 Apr 2022 08:34 PM PDT I'm on Ubuntu 22.04 So, I'm trying to create a command line argument that does something like: and sends all of that, to file.txt so file.txt looks like My current script looks like this But is there a way to make the script so it encompasses all arguments regardless of how many. What's the general consensus on Solus right now? Posted: 29 Apr 2022 11:23 PM PDT I used Solus a while back and I enjoyed it a lot but didn't stick to linux then. But I want to create a dual boot system again and I wanted to install Solus again but I heard some things about the lead resigning? What do you think? Should I pick another distro? Making a backup of all settings, configs, apps, etc Posted: 29 Apr 2022 12:44 PM PDT So the title probably won't make sense on what I am exactly trying to achieve. I want to reinstall Ubuntu on the new LTS version instead of upgrading it directly for a few reasons i have. There probably isn't a easy way to do this so i will have to probably do everything manually. I want to transfer all the stuff which i have effected basically everything but not at the same time? It's hard to explain. I want to transfer - Applications and their config - Ubuntu Settings - Fstab stuff - other things i should transfer - etc I would probably prefer of there is a way to compare all the stuff that has changed from the default Ubuntu so o could see what things I need to back up. (I am writing this while it's 1 am, so have mercy) [link] [comments] |

Pop!OS GstPbutils missing. Where to download? Posted: 29 Apr 2022 10:52 PM PDT I am running PopOS, trying to install some gnome extensions. Trying to install the internet radio extension gives me the error "Requiring GstPbutils" telling me the typelib is not found. I thought maybe I found where to install it off the internet, but got spooked and came here when Firefox said the file may be harmful. What even is GstPbutils anyway, and why was it not already on my system? Is there a way to download it directly from the command line? [link] [comments] |
How to disable a built in wifi device? Posted: 29 Apr 2022 10:50 PM PDT I recently upgraded my motherboard and my new board has a built in wifi card. But, my last board did not. So, I had a separate wifi card that plugged in via PCI-E. It is a really good wifi card. So, I want to use it. But, my system always wants to default to the motherbaord wifi card. I just want to turn that device off. I do not need it. It is just soldered to my new board or I would just remove it. I tried running rfkill block "device number". This seems to shut off all wifi. As soon as I turn on wifi my motherboard card is unblocked and then my system wants to default to it. I verified that both cards are visible and I was running off of the PCI-E card for a second. But, then the system boots me off of the PCI-E card and back on to the motherboard wifi card. I run Endeavour OS and have an XFCE desktop. XFCE doesn't seem to have a lot of settings for wifi. Anything would be helpful. [link] [comments] |
Stuck installing Lubuntu with Ventoy Posted: 30 Apr 2022 01:56 AM PDT Following advice from another thread, I'm attempting to install a portable version of Lubuntu using Ventoy on a very old laptop. I feel like I'm failing at the first hurdle - perhaps I'm not understanding some basic concepts. So: Ventoy was fine; iso on the usb; boot from usb; runs ventoy; select iso; choose start installation. Go through various easy installation steps and then it asks about partitioning and I really don't know how to answer (I selected manual partition and took a photo to show you, which I've attached). I don't want to damage the current windows installation, but surely the partition on the usb drive will be where Ventoy is storing the iso. The only thing I can think of is that I was meant to have gone in using a partition tool and created some free space somewhere. Any advice gratefully received ! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Apr 2022 01:36 AM PDT Let's say that:
All three devices support Bluetooth services. Device C is sending packets to device B and device B sometimes sends packets to device C. Can I catch those packets, traveling between B and C, in my device A? If yes, how? Thank you all. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 11:28 PM PDT I've been exploring different gnome themes on POP. However whenever I change a theme, Nautilus seems to be unaffected. The preview images of the themes on opendesktop.org seem to have their file browser changed as well. Are they using a different file browser? Furthermore, it seems as if the color palette of nautilus changed, and I cannot find how to change or reset it. Highlighted folders and check boxes have changed from their respective light blue and orange (i think, memory is failing me) to a dark blue. [link] [comments] |
Confused on using Linux *HELP!* Posted: 29 Apr 2022 11:10 PM PDT (18,M) I have been wanting to study and learn Linux from a very long time. I have used windows since i got a laptop. (more than 2yo laptop) I have discovered many literally many videos on Linux telling me swich to Linux. But i have few questions before jumping for the last time. I have had bad experiences in the past related to using Linux. The first distro i installed was Linux mint ( suggestion of mental outlaw) , then Ubuntu (this was the best so far), then pop!_os, then Zorin OS and lastly Fedora on a VM. The day i installed Linux mint i was very excited. But i don't know what i did wrong because then i couldn't download any software. (I don't have any terminal knowledge per se) i was in shock and didn't knew how to react to it. My laptop is used by my younger sister besides me. She only uses it for MS Office. Sorry for going off topic. I was just browsing and browsing for solutions but couldn't find one. No USB imager was working because it was asking me to reinstall. I somehow managed to get it working so i went on to install Ubuntu. I really enjoyed the UI and everything but i just found it bland for my taste. I then went back to square one, i.e windows. I have seen many youtubers pushing the idea of using Linux as primary OS. I then thought of giving Linux another try, i installed pop!_os. The UI was very attractive. But the curse was dawned upon me by the community. I couldn't install any application from the pop store. I tried every method but it didn't work. Then i watched a video in which he had written some terminal commands,i just copied and pasted it. It worked. It fucking worked. I was very happy. But couldn't stay for longer. I reinstalled windows. I have also tried windows 11 as it is suitable for my laptop. The last OS on my harddrive was Zorin OS. It was absolutely stunning but here the problem was it was very heavy in terms of resource usage and close to windows. So i thought why not use windows if Linux is using the more or less same resources than Windows. I went back to it. Till date I am on Windows 10. The most recent case was when i installed Fedora on VM. I deleted it almost instantly coz it was not getting full screened. This was my friends suggestion, so i had to do it. I really want to use Linux full time. I don't use any software that is not available on Linux. I just need help because i have heard that this community helps a lot. Kindly suggest me something My laptop specs are: Lenovo IdeaPad S145 1 TB HDD, 256 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM, INTEL GRAPHICS CARD. Suggest me some noobie friendly distros.. Thanks for any kind of help. Love Linux... All hail to Linus Torvals and Richard Stallman [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Apr 2022 04:54 AM PDT First, I am assuming the problem is with the drivers, since it didn't work good on Windows either. But now, I can't use bluetooth at all. I've made posts about this, and now I'm desperate, because my wi-fi went out too. One thing connecting everything was I turned it off, and then it stopped working. It worked fine on Mint, until I turned it off. I changed to Kubuntu to see if anything changed, It worked, I turned it off, and it stopped working, telling me that no adapters were found. Now to wi-fi, which is a worse thing. I can use USB to use my phones hotspot, but this is different. (slightly.) This time I turned everything network related off from UEFI, and put them back on, and oh god, nothing works. Oh. I can't even go to driver manager anymore, it's greyed out, but it said in my realtek network driver "this device is not working". (Weird, since bluetooth worked before, but I dont know!!) Please help me. UPDATE: yup, live usb works fine, wi-fi, bluetooth, everything. im gonna reinstall kubuntu anyways since I messed up my installation (dont ask how lmao) the problem is still NOT solved, even though it is working right now, i bet you my whole life it's gonna stop working when/if i turn it off again, which im pretty hesitant to do. i am still open to suggestions if you know whats going on, sorry for causing any trouble and thank you for your patience. A notebook installation saga. Need Help! Posted: 29 Apr 2022 04:29 PM PDT I'm really struggling to install Linux on an Acer ES-1-533 notebook. I've already installed Linux (Mint, Ubuntu) on several other notebooks of the family but this one is killing me! I've tried several distributions that either crash in the early stages of installation or when configuring GRUB. The only one that progressed in the installation was Debian but as soon as the installation finished the system just doesn't boot! "No Bootable Device" I've even done a (dangerous) BIOS update and nothing has been done. Any advice, idea, procedure? Thanks a lot! [link] [comments] |

Can't Install Updates or Programs because of checksum Posted: 29 Apr 2022 03:47 PM PDT So I tried updating from Pop 21.10 to 22.04.Long story short something didn't work and now i am not gonna run pop os for now. I tried putting a few distros on a drive I had, one after another just to test them on my hardware. I had insane flickering issues with one of them, Fedora tried doing a self test before booting and found that not a single file of the OS was on the stick, pop os only showed a gray and then a black screen and repeat. I think this has to do with my internet. I noticed when trying to make a new stick for another OS that the checksum there didn't match what was on the site. Now I finally got Zorin OS running and installed. But now inside Zorin when i try to install programs or updates for things through either the CLI or Zorin's software thing, I also get errors about checksums not matching up every single time. until i try like 4 or 5 times and then it might work. So my idea now is that something is wrong with my connection causing the apps to not be downloaded correctly. I am also pretty sure this also happened when trying to download ISOs. But then when I do online packet loss tests it seems my connection is fine with 0.1% max packet loss. So are there any other potential problems I could be having? like the hashing algorithm itself being screwed? or is something else happening. Edit: [link] [comments] |
Is there a way to get a text editor to mimic OneNote's "tabs and pages" interface Posted: 29 Apr 2022 04:48 AM PDT I was disappointed to recently discover that Linux doesn't have anything that matches my use case with OneNote. These were my original criteria:
The most important thing that I'm looking for is the file structure interface. I could live without rich text and get by with just plain text. With that in mind, I'm thinking probably there are text editors (like Atom, Sublime, etc) that can display files this way with an appropriate plugin? Does anyone know of any that can do this? Thanks for your suggestions! [link] [comments] |
