What could cause Google Play Services to drain the battery while using private dns?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 11:22 AM PDT

About a week ago when the Play services got an update to itself it started to drain my battery like crazy. Even though I cleared cache and data for it. After looking at battery stats using battery historian I could see something was keeping my mobile radio active during sleep. I found that it was caused by GOOGLE_SERVICES. And the top kernel wakelock was alarmtimer caused by the play services. Now I can see the wake reason was "Abort: Callback failed on alarmtimer in 0xffffff928bc90810 returned -16" every 5 to 10 seconds. After removing my private dns entry. It stopped draining my battery and my device started to sleep once again.

Now how would a private dns setting cause such havoc? I'm using a Pixel 4a(5G), Android 12L (SP2A.220305.012), Google Play Services 22.06.18 (190400-433619428)

Please suggest Android games with no ads and in-app purchases and no permission requests whatsoever?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 12:43 AM PDT

Recently I installed the puzzle game "2048" from the developer "tpc stld" and was shocked in a good way that the app doesn't have ads nor in-app purchases, nor does it request absolutely any permissions! Fantastic!!!

That's really worth applauding! Kudos to this developer!

Could you please recommend any other games on Google Play Market which do that too?

P.S. I know that apps are supposed to monetize. I get that. But I was just wondering if there are other apps that follow this suit?

How to determine which app is repeatedly trying to contact Facebook servers?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 07:11 AM PDT

I've configured my gateway to block all outgoing packets sent to known Facebook-owned IPs. Every few hours, this filter catches and drops a packet sent from my Pixel 3XL. I don't have any FB/IG/SC apps on my phone so it has to be coming from an app that's built using a Facebook SDK that's trying to phone home.

On Linux I could configure an iptables rule to dump the PID of the process responsible for sending the packet. Does Android have this capability? I don't have many apps on this phone so I'm really curious which one is trying to contact Facebook.

Does Android still have adoptable storage?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 08:34 AM PDT

I'm looking at getting a low storage Android phone.

Do the latest versions of Android still let you format an SD card so it's seen as part of the internal storage?

    Thanks

Unable to add lyrics to Facebook/Messenger Stories and unable to see Facebook Dating?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 01:24 PM PDT

Googling this is pointless. Doesn't matter if I type "I can't add lyrics" or any variation of "I cant", every single result is the same "how to" guides. I don't need a fuckin how to. I understand how to do it and it's not working. Funny how Google conveniently leaves the "I cant" out 🤦🏾‍♂️ really? Nobody has ever, ever posted anywhere online about not being able to add lyrics? Nobody has ever posted about the fact they're unable to do so? I doubt that but ok lol so I have to make a post about it.

I can add music, that's not the issue. The issue is the lyrics. People post left and right stories with lyrics on them and I'm unable to even get them? Every guide says "go to the music sticker", "enter your song and the options with lyrics will have a Lyrics next to/underneath it".. they never do. There's songs yeah, there's never any lyrics option and none of the options I choose ever have lyrics.

Up to date app, so that's not the issue. And another thing about this damn Facebook app is everyone else is conveniently able to get the Facebook Dating but me. I used to be able to, then it just magically disappeared and I never seen it again. Yet it's still a thing. This is another thing I neeeeever see anyone mentioning or having issues with. What the fuck is going on with my app? Like these are things nobody else has an issue with but me? And if they do then they never say anything.

Facebooks help community doesn't help anything, people barely respond. Contacting Facebook directly is impossible because they hide from their customers and users and don't respect us enough to allow communication. My app is up to date, I'm using Android which should be more than capable, like a dating app section and a lyrics capability shouldn't only be allowed on one system... obviously above 18, which was never an issue before, even making new accounts I couldn't get the FB dating section back..

Sooo wtf ia going on? Why does literary everyone else have these features but me? Doesn't make any sense

Are quarterly and biannual updates safe?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 11:01 AM PDT

Hello, Hope you guys are doing great.

So I want to switch to Samsung, but I want to know if quarterly updates and biannual updates are safe. Since Samsung pushes their phone after a year or two from monthly to quarterly and so on... (also assume my threat model is high for question's sake).

How do you change the attribute of a folder (to file) to "hidden"? Context below.

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 10:57 AM PDT

I have a Pixel 6 Pro, and by default, the file manager app is Google's own Files app. It's an alright app, but it appears to lack any facility to allow the user to change a folder to hidden.

I've tried but haven't been able to open the native Android file manager app.

I'm hoping that I'm just being daft and that I'm missing something obvious that someone will point out.

The use case here is that I'm a photographer, and I often will import photos from my SD cards to my phone with an OTG adapter so that I can review them in the field. Some of the photos aren't things that I want syncing to Google Photos (photos are shared with my kids and wife), e.g. artistic nudes, etc. I know that Google Photos asks before automatically syncing an album, but I don't even want it to appear in the folder list in the app.

Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

how hard is installing google apps on a huawai phone?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 10:44 AM PDT

basically the titile , i tried searching for solutions but most of them are months old and usually some1 says in comments they don't work anymore , and the more recent one seem overly complicated , and going way out of your way to have google stuff , like downgrading the emui and using dual space , or other apps that dont give you the google store directly but a preset of apps , whit the ability to search for other apps

my simpleton instinct just tells me to side load the google apps like playstore , services , and framework , but would that work?

sorry if this has been asked i coudn't find it

the phone is huawai nova 9 if that even matters

What's the point of task switching if it doesn't save states? How the hell do people get anything done?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 10:23 AM PDT

Very often, when task switching, entered text isn't saved when switching to another app and back. This makes it difficult or impossible to do certain things. For example, two-factor authentication will often necessitate me opening the authenticator app, or my email. When I go back to whichever app or web page asked for the authentication, it will have reloaded and gone back to an earlier state.

Other apps and forms might require me to look up other information, and again will often reset to an earlier state on switching back. From what I can see attempting to troubleshoot, this is a limitation of Android itself, not any particular app or browser.

I know Android isn't designed as a desktop environment, but c'mon, it's 2022. People need to be able to do work outside the office, and that very often involves switching back and forth between tasks. It's exhausting getting anything done having to copy and paste text and juggle a clipboard manager. Yes, I know split-screen mode is a thing, but it doesn't work or display properly with all apps, and it feels like kind of a kludge.

Am I taking crazy pills, or is this a major unaddressed problem with the whole mobile ecosystem? Are other people actually getting any work done, and if so, how?

Security after click on a scam mail link (on Gmail)

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 09:56 AM PDT

Today I received an email saying that my PlayStation account password had been changed, but it wasn't me. The username shown was also correct. Without thinking, and with panic, I clicked on the button, and only then I noticed that the link was strange and that it had redirected me on the official sony website. I closed instantly. Analyzing the email carefully I noticed that the sender's email was quite suspicious, and that all the links did not go from Sony links but from that strange link that redirected me to the real one. Now, I opened that link from my phone, precisely from the Gmail app. As soon as I noticed the scam I deleted cookies, cache, etc, deleted app data of Chrome and Gmail. I'm at work for now, I'll be going home soon to check my PS account. At this point, just having clicked that link but closed instantly, am I taking a risk? Should I do something else? Ty for your help.

    Cannot Make SD Card Internal

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 09:19 AM PDT

    Phone model: Huawei P Smart

    Android OS version: 8.0.0

I'm trying to get my phone to use an SD card as default storage/app install location and move my apps to it in order to save space but the tutorials I've followed don't work since the options the tutorial picks aren't present on my phone. For example, there's no "Format To Internal" option when I select the card in the storage options. I double checked to make sure the card is right and as far as I know Huawei phones do allow such a process. I'm at a loss right now.

Hopefully this is the right place to ask this kind of thing. Any help would be appreciated.

Galaxy S10 - SD Card Causes Phone To Reboot

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 08:44 AM PDT

A couple days ago my Galaxy S10 'locked' my SD card into read-only mode due to an error. I pulled the tray out, refit the SD card and slid it back in. My phone rebooted several times (and took a long time to reboot) so I removed the card. When the SD card is in the phone, if I go into Settings to look at the storage amount, the storage app won't boot up.

Has anyone experienced this? I'm not sure how else to get pictures off the SD card if my phone won't recognize it. Would love some pointers on what to do, or just clear help if the card is busted.

    Thanks in advance.

I did not get any kind of warning that my phone was too hot.

When I'm watching videos on YouTube from my browser they're grainy?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 06:47 AM PDT

I have this problem on Chrome and two other browsers I tested.

    https://freeimage.host/i/GjgLJ9

The screen I colorful grainy and the problem isn't from Chrome since I tested it on two other browsers. I have had this problem for months, so it can't be an Android System Webview. I can't think of any other solutions. I'm not connected to VPN and I've disabled my system wide adblocker for the browsers. What do you think might be the case? Thanks.

Samsung A20s Stuck on Safe Mode

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 06:45 AM PDT

Hi guys, I've encountered an issue where my phone gets stuck on Safe Mode. I've tried disabling safe mode through notification but it didn't work. I tried powering off the phone and turning it on and it didn't work. My last attempt was to factory reset the whole phone but still it is stuck in safe mode.

The only thing I've not tried is booting it through safe mode but the thing is I've not been able to achieve it since my VOLUME DOWN button is not working. But weirdly enough I saw some guides on the internet that the only thing i need to boot to recovery mode is a volume up and power button but it's not working.

Can someone help me with this? Is my phone bricked or what? Is there any software that I can use to disable safe mode via PC? Is there a virus on my device? Please help

long touch autofill option disappeard android 12 vs 10

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 06:44 AM PDT

in older versions like android 10, when you made a long press on any text field, you could force autofill for the fields that weren't recognised (because autofill on android is not stable). In android 12, this option is completely gone... any way to bring this back? using autofill where only apps that use web-logins work and you need to copy-paste everything else is just annoying and tedious.

    Mobile data problems

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 06:22 AM PDT

So I had my mobile data running perfect for a while, great speed and connection strength until a few weeks ago, from then its gotten increasingly worse and my internet has dropped to a patchy and weak connection and always downloading at kb speeds until 10-12 and then it gets worse again from there on, I'm wondering if this would be a problem with my provider (amaysim) I live in bundy so I thought the service would be great in here but I seem to have h+ more than most of the time, before you ask ive done most of what the classic guides on the internet tell you to do, update youre phone, clear out your phone, restart your phone the whole lot and im wondering if there is anything that helped you guys before inconsider swapping providers. I'd appreciate any help
