    Linux beginner

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 04:29 PM PDT

So I recently got a job interview where they require linux skills. Its a help desk engineer, where I passed the technical linux interview with "flying colors" . It was normal easy peasy questions, chmod, creating partitions… etc nothing fancy. But I was told to get more advanced as Im going to need it every day. Thing is I don't feel ready , as I have only used Kali mainly as penetration testing (started 6 months ago) on platforms like THM and HTB, so basically its all tools, (script kiddie I know:)) . Curious how did all or you progressed learning linux for a day to day use, on the job or any particular videos that you recommend? Im good with navigating the file system, I'm just not sure what it is required for the role I'm getting in to. Share your stories please.

    Peace ✌️ Nick

Have been using linux for 1 month an thought I would add solutions to problems I faced. Please add your own so it would act as reference for newbies installing linux.

    Linux solutions.

These are the solutions to linux issues I faced so far and their solutions.
Documenting them here makes it easier for future setup

    Sound not working.

open the alsa mixer through alsa mixer command.
    <F2> to select sound card.
Unmute front speaker (and others) using M.
Go to automute option and disable it by typing - .
type sudo alsactl store in terminal to save these settings for future.

    Beep not working from terminal

This solution probably only works in Konsole terminal.
Go to settings and edit current profile and choose "system bell" option in "terminal bell" mode.

Wine not showing up in right click menu

Usually after installing wine, it should be added to right click menu of an exe by default and should also run by doubleclicking it.
Type this command in terminal to fix this:

Writing manjaro/arch iso to USB with unetbootin throws errors

    Unetbootin is not reccommended.
    use the dd command.
dd if=pathToISo of=targetUSBname (if is inputfile, of is outputfile)
see the manjaro install guide for full details and reccommended extra arguments.

locale problems when using dmenu or i3 window manager.

    Add this to your .bash_profile
    export LC_ALL="C"

    i3 window manager issues

    add "exec i3" to .xinitrc
change i3-sensible-terminal in the i3 config file to the terminal you actually have: konsole in my case.

vim being unable to copypaste to sysem clipboad

This is because most of the distros ship minimal vim with no clipboard support.
check vim --version to see support for clipboard.
Also "set clipboard=unamedplus" in vimrc to make default register copy paste to clipboard.

please help me choose a GUI

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 05:51 AM PDT

    Hello,

[the boring part] I am new to Linux, but also getting more and more familiar with it, and am currently Manjaro with Gnome GUI, but I'd like to install Arch Linux with GUI.

[the real problem] Here's the thing, I can't decide between Gnome, Plasma and Xfce. Maybe you could help me decide and tell me the difference please.

    Thank you for any answers

UPDATE: Thank you for your suggestions, I stayed with Gnome and actually don't regret it.

Proper way of setting MPD on startup (user based)

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 02:46 PM PDT

Hi. Probably noob question, but how can I start MPD with my user session?

According to the Arch wiki, I should put

    [ ! -s ~/.config/mpd/pid ] && mpd

on .xinitrc or any other autostart file. I'm not using xinitrc though, I use .xsessionrc (which is pretty much the same, right?) and I had a single exec bspwm command there (I also use gdm as the display manager). However I still need to run MPD with this command on .xsessionrc to have it working once starting the session (and if I try to start it system-wide via systemctl it will return the error where it says the port to which is binded to is busy).

(This probably has an easy solution but I don't know how to do it, so please don't bully).

    Thanks in advance!

    Linux for a noob

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 10:48 AM PDT

I am not the noob (obviously... look at some of my posts and comments about Linux). No... my wife would be the noob. She has a laptop (which I'm using right now to type this). I tried getting her to use Linux Mint a few years ago but it didn't stick. She didn't like it. Probably because I didn't have the all of the software she needed to use it. Well, now this laptop is dangerously at risk. It has Windows 7 on it and I cannot update it obviously. She wants Windows 10 but this laptop cannot handle Windows 10. It only has 3GB of RAM and a Dual Core processor.

Those of you who have switched to Linux Mint, how did you like it vs Windows? What about it do you like? I need a good argument to get her to switch to Linux at least on this laptop. I know it will run Linux Mint Cinnamon and that's what I'm intending to put on here for her.

She doesn't play games. All she would do on it is probably just browse the web and she may use LibreOffice with some of her already created documents on this laptop.

I'd really like her to join me in switching to Linux as I have 4 years ago. I know Linux isn't for everyone but as rarely as she's used this laptop, I don't think it would make that much of a difference. We just found her charger for it since the last time she used it which was around Thanksgiving (4 months ago).

She's also thinking about WFH but I am not sure if this laptop is cut out for that or not. Even with Windows 10 on it (if it even COULD run Windows 10) it wouldn't be enough CPU for a WFH job.

Anyway, if anyone has any ideas on how I can get her to convert, please let me know in the comments.

I've thought about trickery (installing Mint and making it LOOK like Windows 10) but I think she'd catch on quick that it isn't Windows 10.

2 Questions about dependencies when installing a package (Arch)

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 09:13 AM PDT

If a package install via CL throws an error, are the dependencies also removed? I ask cause I see all these dependencies getting installed 0->100% before the error happens. Don't know if that requires manual cleanup on my part even though the principal app couldn't install.

When installing a package with yay, CL asks if I want to remove the dependencies post-installation. How does that work that I can remove dependencies for an app that requires those dependencies in the first place?

    Kitty terminal with ssh issues

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 07:56 AM PDT

    Hi,
Im using the kitty terminal interface with zsh (I have tried fish and bash as well, same issue). When ssh'ing into my home server (or just using ssh), backspace does not work and instead makes a space. I do not have this issue with Konsole. Any ideas as to what a solution may be ? I haven't changed much so I doubt I would have massively changed the keybinds or anything. Any potential solutions are appreciated.

Favorite Linux video channels and Linux ambassador?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 03:28 AM PDT

I like Average Linux User and DistroTube, and have just found Brodie Robertson's channel which also looks interesting.

What are your favorite Linux video channels?

    Linux channels

    Linux ambassadors?

I feel there's a need for persons who can channel the generally welcoming and pragmatic mood of this group, which media (articles, videos) could contact for Linux-related interviews. So if you should suggest a good Linux ambassador, who would that be?

From the top of my head, Luke from "Linus Tech Tips" pops up. He has been using Linux in his past, and comes across as pragmatic and non-zealous. His choice of Linux Mint is a case in point. If he were to switch over to Linux full time and start creating videos at "Linus Tech Tips", he would be a great candidate.

Advice needed: Setting up a new laptop

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 07:23 AM PDT

    Greetings friends,

(I hope this doesn't break a rule of the sub - if so, please let me know!)

I just bought a new laptop and while I'm waiting for it to arrive, I'm trying to come up with a game plan and I'd be glad to hear you opinion.

I'm getting an ASUS Vivobook S15, which comes with i5, 16 GB RAM and 512 SSD (no HDD). I have some windows apps I don't feel comfortable about emulating which don't have a great Linux alternative (eg, Scrivener), so I need both systems. Naturally, the question becomes dual boot vs emulation.

Now, given that I only need a few Windows apps, some of the time, won't do any gaming and the system has sufficient RAM, I'm leaning towards a VM Windows on a single Linux boot. In the past, I had a dual boot system and ran into trouble with Windows ridiculous space requirements, and I thought putting all the disk space in a single basket would keep me from having the same problem.

What do you think? Would you do VM or dual boot in my case?

Bonus points - do you have any recommendations for a good distro for an ASUS laptop? I'm leaning towards an Ubuntu variant, probably either Mint or Pop, though I have yet to have a system where the latter works nicely.

Is it possible to get Kernel version 5.12+ on Ubuntu 18.04?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 02:25 PM PDT

We are using Ubuntu 18.04 for a project, but the problem is that it cannot find my MediaTek MT7921 LAN driver. I've found through google, that the driver is only supported in version 5.12 or after.

However, I am unsure how to get Kernel version 5.12 and whether it is even possible to get on Ubuntu 18.04.

I'm new to Linux so help is appreciated.

Linux gaming for someone coming from Windows.

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 01:51 AM PDT

As a Windows 10 user that simply uses it for gaming and some excel files for those games to keep track and calculate, is it a viable alternative for someone who doesn't play any games with kernal level anti-cheats and is ready to run a VM to gain access to certain games that may not work?

No I'm not a power user and want things to be quite simple.

    Edit: which distro is recommended?

What Distro For an Old Laptop?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 09:47 AM PDT

I just purchased my old work laptop

The specs are actually pretty good. It's got an i7, 16g of ram, and 500gb ssd.

I was thinking PopOS since that's what I've used in the past and I like it a lot. I most plan on using the thing for coding, browsing the web, and streaming movies and shows.

What would be a good distro to try out?
