Laptops I have a “Toshiba Satellite A105-S4344” which has presumably had its bios password changed. There has been no fingerprints ever set and I can’t seem to do anything without entering the bios password. How can I put this laptop into a usable state?

Need aome friendly help buying a laptop

    Posted: 27 Mar 2022 11:18 AM PDT

What I'm looking for is a work/leasure laptop with ocasional GoG(nothing after 2010) games.

Work is mostly Office and other programs, i do thend to have multiple (a lot really) of tabs open, and i always have one/two programs running in background. Space is not so much of an issue as I mostly use cloud. What is very important is wifi, as i need maximum speed and also for plex streaming.

Price wise i am a bit out of touch with current prices so i don't really know what to say, ballpark 400-800(a bit extra if the bang is worth the buck)

    Thank for the asist.

    wireless disappeared

    Posted: 27 Mar 2022 02:33 PM PDT

hi, a few days ago i chatted about my dell latitude, i repaired the cmos successfully and it's functioning now. i have an issue with my everyday lap top, my aspire 4810TZ lost its ability to connect wireless to wi-fi, i don't see the wireless wifi driver in device manager, i performed a clean install of windows thinking i could refresh it but that didn't work. my other option is to restart the computer from absolute scratch but that would give me windows 7 back so i would have to do the upgrade again. before i do that does anyone have an ideas?

Buying a laptop for my Mom

    Posted: 27 Mar 2022 10:47 AM PDT

    Greetings r/laptops,

I come to you in a time of great need. My mother is slowly starting to venture into the digital world. While she does own a smartphone, and a tablet (very slow, unresponsive and relativly old at this point), she will sooner or later require something that resembles a laptop.

I know my way around desktops and had no trouble with buying my latest gaming laptop.....the amount of non-gaming laptops scares me. Therefore I wanted to get some opinions and recommendations.

Not to waste anymore time, let's get onto the questionaire:

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: < 800€, as cheap as possible without "cheaping out"
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? batter life > build quality > performance > form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very, as it will most likely not see any use outside of the house
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Nothing below 15,6"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. (Microsoft) office use alongside browsing
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? While optional: A touchscreen and slighty bigger touchpad.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The laptop will see nothing outside of browsing, office work, emails, streaming. It should be able to have a few more programms and browser tabs open without its responsiveness coming to a grinding halt and not see 100% CPU usage when during an anti-virus scan.

Thank you for any replies in advance!

Why is it that laptops often have low end GPU paired with high end CPU, while desktops often have low end CPU paired with high end GPU?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 11:48 PM PDT

Why do manufacturers decide on this?

It's quite interesting how with desktops you see more of low CPU paired with high GPU, such as Intel i5 with RTX 3070, while laptops you see more of high CPU low GPU, such as Intel i7 with RTX 3060. Most members of the PC master race say that the GPU matters more than the CPU.

Besides, in most laptops, the CPU thermal throttles pretty hard and can't even reach its max potential (dropping Ghz frequency and all that). For example, this video did comparisons in multiple types of workloads and the results show that the Ryzen 7 gets limited by laptop thermals and doesn't perform significantly better than a Ryzen 5 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqK8mA1HzTA

That's why I feel that in most use cases, a higher end CPU doesn't really matter, and I would rather have laptop companies use lower end CPU and spend that money on a better GPU instead.

    Is My Laptop Repairable?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2022 02:15 PM PDT

My laptop is a 2020 12" MacBook Pro w/Touch bar. Late last night I spilled a glass of water on my desk near my laptop, quickly realized and dried and patted down my laptop and opened the screen to make sure it was working. Not much water had spilled on my laptop as most of it fell on the desk near it and on the ground- crisis averted! (Or so I thought)

Although it was working fine last night, this morning I went to turn it on and it would not turn on. Tried charging it up in case battery died and still nothing. My work laptop was also right next to it and got a little water on it too but it's working completely fine. My question is- I know I'm not providing much detail but does anyone have any ideas what could've happened/ why my MacBook won't even turn on and how much would a rough estimate of repairs for a situation like this run? Would I be better off just buying a new one or trying to repair?

Also, How would I go about getting this repaired by a third party provider? Apple charges $300 just to run a diagnostic and then fees on top of that to solve the problem.

    Thanks!!

    Laptop for college?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2022 02:05 PM PDT

So I'm going to be in college soon and I'm looking into buying a new laptop, my current laptop is only 4 gigs of ram and 128 gigs of storage, 4 pounds, so not very portable and I feel like it can't even handle my highschool work and watching youtube. I can only afford a max of $700. So far I've found this laptop https://store.acer.com/en-us/swift-3-laptop-sf314-59-5790 that seems to give me everything I need for the right price but i'm not sure if it's actually good since i'm not an expert. So if anyone can let me know if the laptop I linked is good for what I need and if anyone has any suggestions for anything that might be better feel free to comment some links.

    Smashed/Squashed heatsink and screw problem

    Posted: 27 Mar 2022 10:06 AM PDT

    Smashed/Squashed heatsink and screw problem

My sister's laptop experienced a sudden shutdown, I checked on it and found out that it overheats, so I apply a new thermal paste but when I'm about to put back the heatsink, I noticed this

Before applying thermal paste, I open the ram cover since you can see a little bit of the heatsink base in it, then fastly touched it and it's very hot(after using the laptop).

Then, here is another one I noticed...

The 2 screws won't come off, even if I put a flat head screwdriver underneath the head and twist it with philips screwdriver.

Anything I can do to fix this?

What will the battery be like on this?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2022 01:44 PM PDT

The laptop is the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro gen 6 (16" AMD). It has a Ryzen 7 5800H and an RTX 3050 with a 75Wh battery. The tech sheet on the product page says 'up to 10 hours video playback'. But this spec sheet I found claims 16.5 hours video playback and 12.5 hours MobileMark 2018.

I am a junior in college who has a super shitty laptop I never use and a great desktop at home. I am looking for a new laptop for less than $300 and found two refurbished options on Amazon. The Thinkpad X270 and the Macbook Air.

Currently, the only demanding programs I use are Excel and Chrome lol. I personally like the appeal of Mac complimenting my iPhone however I don't want to be impractical with my choice. The specs are both similar but I just don't know enough about Mac vs Excel for casual schoolwork to justify one over the other. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

My laptop is giving me an error saying (fan has failed to respond correctly) while powering on. But it's working fine (spinning normal not making loud noises) . It's been Almost a month. SO SHOULD I TAKE ANY ACTION OR LEAVE IT AS IT IS

    Posted: 27 Mar 2022 12:21 PM PDT

I own Dell Vostro 3580 I had took my laptop to a local technician, he said it's a problem related to OS because I had upgraded it to windows 11. He suggested to downgrade to windows 10,if not it will stop working anytime. I did it (by downloading it from windows website) but I'm still getting the error

Another thing I forgot to mention.... The error doesn't always show up.

I’m trying to get a laptop for my mom that’s around 500 dollars and found these two. I wanted an opinion on which one is better. She just wants to pay bills and probably watch some YouTube so she doesn’t need much, but I want something that goes a bit fast and lasts a while for her.

Windows "detects" battery, but laptop doesnt turn on when unplugged

    Posted: 27 Mar 2022 11:16 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I have an ACER Aspire VX5 for around 4 years now, and never had an issue with it. I never played that much on it and always repasted it every year.

But now, I used it heavily this month with somewhatt heavy games. The issues started that sometimes it would just shut off when unplugged, other times it worked fine. I opened the laptop to clean the coolers, but now when I built it back together, it wont even turn on without being plugged in.

It does work normally when plugged in. The little Battery light on the laptop keeps flashing, but Windows recognizes the battery, and its stuck 95%... and the laptop just shut off when I unplug it.

What could I have possible fried on this month of heavy usage? Everything hardware seemed normal with the laptop when I opened it and I am sure I rebuilt it everything correctly.

    Gaming Laptop Buying Advice

    Posted: 27 Mar 2022 10:38 AM PDT

Hey everyone. So now that prices have been falling consistently for the past few months I've decided it's time to buy a gaming laptop.

After quite a bit of research, I've narrowed my options down to 3 products, which fulfill most of my main requirements:

    1. Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ACH6 (Ryzen 5-5600H/16GB/512GB NVME/GeForce RTX 3050 Ti/120Hz IPS) - 745 USD

    2. Asus TUF Gaming FX506HCB-HN200 (i5-11400H/16GB/512GB/GeForce RTX 3050/144Hz IPS) - 750 USD

    3. Lenovo Legion 5 15ACH6 (Ryzen 5-5600H/16GB/1TB SSD/GeForce RTX 3050/165Hz IPS) - 820 USD

I'm mainly considering the first two. I will mainly be playing Overwatch, GTA Online and Flight Simulator 2020 on this laptop.

Which of the two would you guys say is the best buy, since both are pretty much the same price? I would especially appreciate info on which of the two has the best thermals, which is something that always troubles me with laptops.

I'm only including the Legion one because I've heard great things about it and is the only one that comes with 1TB of storage. I will need that much storage and that's why I already have a 1TB NVME that I can use.

However, I'm worried about not losing the 2 year warranty, as I will have to open up the device and make the upgrade. I contacted Lenovo and they were very cool about it; you don't lose the warranty as long as you ship it with the original components if you have to send it in. Unfortunately, that renders selling the 500GB SSD of the IdeaPad impossible...

As for Asus I don't know, so I would appreciate it if anyone from the EU has any info. That being said, with the Legions' potential advantages and in order to stay on the same side with the warranty, do you think it's worth paying this much of a premium for it over the other two options?

    Thank you all in advance!

Need advice please! which should i buy?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2022 10:38 AM PDT

I'm planning to buy a new laptop. I've had my current laptop (hp pavilion g6) since my college freshman year (2014). Didn't have any performance issues with it til around 2019-2020. So one of the things I'm considering is the brand's durability/lifespan. Not really that knowledgeable with what tech specs and whatnots but I've asked around. Heard from my friends that Lenovo and Asus laptops are pretty durable. Did some searching and it seems that lenovo has more "bang for the buck" laptops.

Also looked into Lenovo's 2022 catalog (for PH) and I'm considering these two:

(Note: My budget is $900 max - $1= 50-52 PHP, main use for laptop: occasional - ms office, for my hobby - digital art so photoshop and apps like painttoolsai, light gaming - just sims and valorant. I have a separate laptop for work, so I just use/will be using my personal laptop during my free time)

    Ideapad Slim 5 P37,995 (more or less $750) - AMD Ryzen 5 4900U - Windows 10 Home - 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz - 512G PCIE SSD - AMD Radeon Vega 8 Graphics - 15.6FHD IPS 3.2T 300N

    Yoga 6 P44,995 (more or less $865) - AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 4650U Processor - Windows 10 Home - 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz - 512G PCIEX2 SSD - AMD Radeon Vega 6 Graphics - 13.3FHD 300N Touch 72%TSC

Do you guys think the specs are fit for my use and are "future-proof"? Also, are these worth to buy? If not, can you give me suggestions? And to those who own one of these models, can you please give me insights regarding your experience with these laptos?

    Thanks in advance!!!!

What to learn coding. Flutter/Android Studio

    Posted: 27 Mar 2022 09:52 AM PDT

I'm looking for a cheap i7 (7th gen+); 16gb; 1920x1080 screen. I think these are the "recommended" specs for Android Studio. I know the "required" specs are lower but I want to future proof the laptop a little bit. I don't mind referburbished. I'd really like to find one for under $800. Closer to $500 if possible.

    Any suggestions?

    Personal Thin Client

    Posted: 27 Mar 2022 09:43 AM PDT

Mods: Apologies if the post is not relevant in this sub. If so, please redirect me and I'll move it to the appropriate sub.

I have a Mac mini for Mac OS, Lenovo Thinkstation for Windows 10 and a VM on a Synology Diskstation running Linux. Is there a personal solution (like the VMware Horizon Client) that I can use on one laptop and access all three systems? I am aware that using a MacBook, I can access the mini (Screen sharing), RDP app for Windows and (maybe) free VNC and OpenVPN for the linux VM on the NAS (haven't tried it yet but should be possible).

My concern is the cost. Getting a MacBook Pro just to be a thin client would be pretty expensive. Are there any open-source solutions that I can install on a cheap/used 17 laptop to make this possible?

    Thanks.
