Best way (best advice) to run Cat5e/Cat6 outdoors for beginner Posted: 25 Mar 2022 07:45 PM PDT Hi, I've never crimped my own Ethernet cables before and I was wondering what the best way is and what the best cable is. Long story short, I want to run about 75-100ft of either Cat5e/Cat6 to an outdoor access point. I don't have any of the stuff yet so I'm planning out what to get and how to do it. There's already an exit point in the house where the cable from the street comes in so I won't need to drill a hole but it's not big enough for a connector to fit through. From what I've been reading, it looks like just non direct burial rated outdoor cable will be fine since it'll be under the roof, an Ethernet surge protector on both sides is recommended and shielded cable. I don't have a good place to mount it so the POE cable will come down from the roof overhang and to the access point on a post or something. What I'm stuck on is the kind of cable to get. I've found some shorter lengths on eBay since I'll only need about 100ft, but it's confusing. If I get a solid core not stranded, pre-made shielded outdoor Cat6 cable would I be able to just cut the end of the cable and rewire it as long as I follow the wiring pattern? Also for the connectors, what should I get? If I have a shielded cable and the access point has a shielded connector, would I need one inside as well? Does anybody have any advice or experience dealing with lightning protection too? The house is old (50s) so some of the outlets are not grounded but I can plug the POE injector into a grounded one. TLDR: What's the best outdoor Ethernet cable, either CAT5e/Cat6 for about a 100ft run and is there anything I should know like lightning protection. I already have command strip rope light clips so I'm hoping the cable will fit into that. We're in a semi rural area so I'm not worried about interference and there's very little obstructions. I don't plan on doing gigabit, at most maybe 300/300. [link] [comments]
Wifi showing up as hidden on PC but on Macbook Pro it is not hidden. Posted: 25 Mar 2022 09:03 PM PDT I am at work and I can connect my macbook pro and iphone to my work wifi, but when i hook up my windows laptop all i get is hidden network. Well I connect to the wifi on my windows laptop and it says connected (after adding in name and password manually) but then I just get disconnected 5 minutes later. Any idea on this? have resetted wifi. On my macbook pro and iphone the wifi does not say hidden, why is that? [link] [comments]
Is a wifi 6 router required for wifi 6 mesh nodes to work? Posted: 25 Mar 2022 08:30 PM PDT Completely new home owner and want to understand properly. I am planning to get a set of TP-Link Deco X20 which supports WiFi 6 mesh network. My question is, do I still need a standalone router that supports WiFi 6 for it to fully utilise or is just any ONR hooked up to the X20 sufficient? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Mar 2022 07:27 PM PDT I used a static IP to try and connect the two but it doesn't work. The router works as an access point but not as an extension which means that the dead zone in my house still remains. [link] [comments]

Eero with Secure + Vs. pfSense on a Firewall Appliance Posted: 25 Mar 2022 02:49 PM PDT HI, I came across a video explaining how to set up pfSense on a Protectli Vault FW4B - 4 Port, Firewall Micro Appliance. This sounded interesting to me even though I have an Eero Pro 6 subscribed to Eero Secure. I know upgrading to Eero Secure + gives you DDNS, VIP,m Malware Bytes. But I wonder if there is an apple to apple comparisons between a home network with just Eero and Secure + and pfSense on a separate appliance? At first glance, it seems like Eero already has a firewall, has DDNS, has a VPN. So what other perks might pfSense offer over Eero with secure +? I'm researching this topic as well so if no one knows of the top of their heads I'll post what I find searching around. Thanks. [link] [comments]
Router with range (or meshabbility) + vlan support for both wired and wireless Posted: 25 Mar 2022 06:02 PM PDT I'm looking for a programmable router for home that supports vlan on both wired and wireless so that I can separate work / ring / home networks. It also needs a decent range for wifi or be able to be extended with another router. [link] [comments]

Cisco 3750x VLAN issue w/ ESXi 7.0.x Posted: 25 Mar 2022 02:01 PM PDT I am moving from my Nortel 5510-48T switch to Cisco 3750x. I don't really know networking that well and am seriously struggling. I have been reading blogs and forums posts. Trying to configure the ports as such. But it just never seems to work. Usually my VMs can't ping out the appropriate VLAN. Booting them works just fine. But storage is on VLAN 1001 still. I have 2 ESX servers moving only 1 at a time. After that storage. Here is the config for my 3750x. I want to be able to trunk VLANs to the 2 prod connections which are vmnic1 & 2. The 2 interfaces in I'm working on are 46 & 47. They are not in a range. If I need to delete my port groups and virtual switches and start over so be it! Any help is greatly appreciated!

No fast internet near me, what are my options? Posted: 25 Mar 2022 11:25 AM PDT Hey guys, recently moved to Nashville and realized after we moved in that our new apartment's only option for internet is AT&T, at 25mbps down. Me and my girlfriend are both avid gamers and that number is kinda hard to swallow. We're willing to spend some extra money within reason, please help… [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Mar 2022 05:13 PM PDT I have recently been targeted by dos attacks. I'm wondering what I should do to mitigate these? I've switched routers, changed my ip address and they still seem to be happening. [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Mar 2022 04:22 PM PDT I upgrade my internet to xfinity superfast plan which advertises upto 600mbps speed. I am currently using NETGEAR Cable Modem with Built-in WiFi Router (C6230). I want to know which modem and router do I need to buy to enjoy that kind of internet speed. My router+modem is in my living room. I have a 1200 sq feet apartment. Currently, my internet speed (on all my devices) averages to about 113 mbps if I am not working in the living room. I would really appreciate your input because I am a noob when it comes to routers and modems, etc. [link] [comments]
Man, the new TP-Link Archer AX55's range is awful Posted: 25 Mar 2022 04:16 PM PDT This is more of a PSA for anyone considering the AX55 since the few reviews I read don't mention real-world range at all: I just went from an old Netgear Nighthawk R6400 which was working just fine, but I wanted WiFi 6 and bought the TP-Link. I have quite a few devices which use the 2.4 band and are far away from the router, like a washing machine, motion sensors and cameras. The ones furthest away from the router, which were working just fine with the Netgear, completely lost signal after setting up the TP-Link. Transfer speeds on the 5Ghz band for the AX55 are a bit better than the R6400's when you're very close to the router, but that 5Ghz signal drops like a sack of potatoes too. Now, I know there are too many variables when it comes to wifi range and my experience may not be the same as yours, but I felt the need to create this post since, again, I saw no mentions of such extreme dead zones when researching this particular model. What layers and protocols of the TCP/IP model are involved when accessing a website and why? Posted: 25 Mar 2022 07:56 PM PDT I am doing my homework, I think all 4 layers are involved when accessing a website, but I want to know if I'm right or not. Can you help me please to understand it? Thank you! [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Mar 2022 03:40 PM PDT If I run a speed test in the room closest to my router, I am averaging 25 Mbps download. But if I run the same speed test in the room farthest from my router, I am averaging 5 mbps. If I want to increase my speed in the far room, would an easy solution be to install a mesh router in that room, such as a Google Wifi AC1200 device? [link] [comments]
New Orbi mesh network delivering Wifi Slower than expected Posted: 25 Mar 2022 03:19 PM PDT Hey Everyone, I'm a bit of a newbie, but ill try to describe my situation here in the hopes someone has some insight. I recently upgraded to gigabit fiber and to go along with this I also installed an Orbi mesh system; an RBR750 and one RBS750 satellite. I've tested the signal coming into the home directly from the modem into my computer and it's anywhere from 850-950. I'm unsure why that fluctuates. Anyhow, the problem, in my eyes, is my wifi speed. It isn't slow by most standards, but if I'm RIGHT next to the router I'm only getting 450-500 down, and I'd like that to be closer to what I'm paying for. If I do a speed test right on the Orbi app it's telling me I'm getting 940 down and up. Cool. But a practical speed test usually nets half of that, even if I'm in the immediate vicinity. If I plug into the Orbi directly, which I cannot do in my office, I'm still getting somewhere around 700, so not even the full bandwidth at that point. Again, these speeds are fast, but not what I am paying for. The modem is wired to the router via a cat 5e, I'm going to switch that to a cat 7 tomorrow, but I expect that to have no change here. Just a hail mary. Is this a normal expectation of a mesh system? I understand that there would be some loss over wifi, but I wouldn't expect nearly 50% at close range. Are there some settings I should try tweaking? Things I have done: I've tested my MTU and 1500 seems correct. I've done a factory reset. I messed with some settings (5g channels and such) in the orbi login, but otherwise, I'm at a loss. This is a refurb unit and I think has a limited warranty I can call on, so I'm also wondering if the unit just may be defective. Any insight into this would be helpful from more experienced users and thank you! [link] [comments]
