My poor Lenovo is dying on me. Any suggestions/tips on buying a current gen laptop?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 07:47 AM PST

My poor old Lenovo laptop I bought for like 400 usd is dying on me… rip little buddy. I've been trying to decide if I should buy a current gen Laptop or if I should wait for something like the ROG Z13 or the new Zepharus G14 or if I should just buy a current version. They've made some changes to the newer ones as well.

The Z13 looks very compelling to me but the X13 is basically the same thing without the tablet-ness.

Any inputs? I know pretty much nothing about GPU prices and where they're going so if anyone has any idea 💡 f prices are going up or down that would be helpful. At this point I'd I do decide to go with the new laptops I don't really have a price range because I can just save until they come out.

Looking for a laptop to replace my Surface Pro 4

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 08:06 AM PST

When starting grad school in 2017, I bought a Surface Pro 4. I LOVED that thing, but now it's giving me problems (it shuts off if it overheats just a little). Of course, I'm no longer in grad school and absolutely cannot justify buying such an expensive machine as a replacement, but I have no idea where to start in looking for something else.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
-Under $1000, preferably more like $600-$800 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      -Probably not
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
-Battery life is pretty important, the others are all kind of equal
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
-Something small and thin is preferable
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
-Maybe like 13 inches for easy transport
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
-I know I want to use Adobe illustrator/photoshop/lightroom, and I want to be able to play basic games like Sims. i also want to be able to learn and use drawing software, so something with a good pen option would be ideal
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
-Nothing specific. I would just like to be able to use Roll20 without it shutting off on me....
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
-I want something with a good, responsive surface for using a pen. I want to be able to write and draw on the screen
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
-I don't think i have too many crazy specs that I need, but I really truly loved my surface. I know that whatever I buy probably won't be quite as nice since I'm paying so much less, but if there's something that feels somewhat similar, that'd be great

Going to grad school for master's & doctorate, looking for laptop that will last 5-6 years.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 09:43 AM PST

Hi, all. I'll be starting a clinical psychology Psy.D. program this fall and happen to be in need of a new laptop now, so I want something that will ideally last me through the whole program, because Psy.D. programs are insanely expensive and I'll be poor for a few years, LOL. I've been a happy Linux user for years, but I'll need to switch to PC because I hate Mac but plan to make some side income doing graphic design, and Adobe CC just doesn't work in Linux (boo!). What I expect to be using the laptop for is: SPSS, Zoom/Teams/teletherapy, online classroom, lots of writing and reading, web browsing, etc. Heavy on typing (I have a dissertation in my future! 😬), so the quality of the keyboard is important.

    Things I need:

-A good built-in camera, as I'll be learning how to do teletherapy. Mic not important, because I'll use Bluetooth headphones during sessions for privacy's sake.

-Good enough video not to look crappy or lag a ton during teleconferencing

-At least a 15" screen, because I'll be doing hours and hours of writing & research.

-Built to last--I'm open to a business laptop. Does not have to look pretty.

-Full keypad to get me through SPSS data entry.

-A decent, solid keyboard. I've been using a Lenovo Ideapad for a while, and the layout is terrible (try to hit Shift, and you hit Enter, or try to hit delete, and you hit printscreen, etc.)

-Matte screen with crisp text rendering to make hours of reading less hard on the eyes

-Ports: At least 2 USB type A ports for peripherals I've already got. A type C port would be a nice bonus. And HDMI for my second monitor and projector.

-Decent battery life. Would prefer not to be replacing batteries every couple of years.

-Under $1K, if possible, but definitely no more than $1500.

    Suggestions?

    Replacing a Dell XPS 13 9350

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 08:19 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**

    Up to $2,000

    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?**

    Yes

    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**

I'm drawn towards ultrabooks with high build quality. 2-in-1 is intriguing but not sure how much value it adds for me. Long battery life is a plus.

    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

    Very

    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    14" preferred

    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Light video/photo editing - e.g. family gopro videos, cellphone photos

    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Not much time for gaming nowadays but if I could, I'd be looking at Civilization VI, Football Manager 2022, Age of Empires 2

    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Looking for something up there as best-in-class

    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Current XPS is 5 years old 9350, i5-6200, 8GB RAM - I like it overall but my issues with it are mainly a) battery discharging when closed sleep/hibernate and b) limits on running games as listed

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Mainly Ableton Live, VCV Rack, Pure Data and other audio software. I often perform live using real time audio processing from my audio interface, so I need a machine that can bear low latency without any dropouts.

Looking for a laptop for work (professional translator)

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 07:08 AM PST

Hi, I am a professional translator looking for a laptop.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Around 600 €, although I'd agree to pay a little more if it's a good deal. In the Basque Country or Spain.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Sure, why not.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I'd love to get something long-lasting, with a good battery life.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd love to get something light weight although it's not a priority.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? Something average, but I don't want one of those tiny ones, that's for sure. I will be reading and writing a lot on it.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Amateur video/photo editing (and I'd live to play Rust with it). These are not priorities, I need my laptop for work mainly: translation, using Computer-Assisted Translation and office tools.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Rust or the Sims, I don't know what FPS means.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build I guess. Comfortable keyboard.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. As a wrap up: something durable, long-lasting and reliable, mainly for basic office and CAT (Computer-Assisted Translation) tools. I would love to indulge in some video games or photo editing but it's not a priority.

    Thanks in advance!

Help my analysis paralysis - looking for a work laptop in US for under $800

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 06:56 AM PST

So I'm looking at a few laptops, this morning most attractive seems to be a Lenovo Thinkbook 13s Gen 3 with an AMD Ryzen 5 16g/ 512gSSD that I found a deal on for $662.80 USD - I'm wondering if y'all would steer me away from that toward a) a better price or b) a better overall deal wrt performance etc. My needs are pretty basic - a lot of writing, some database management, a LOT of zoom calls and webinars - and maybe the occasional strategy game.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

I'm mentally prepared to spend up to $1000 but would like to be in the $600-800 range. The lower the price the better, as long as some of my basic requirements are met (mostly good keyboard, solid build, and decent performance)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      I think so?
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
a good keyboard for extended typing is non-negotiable... then build quality, battery life, performance
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      somewhat
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
no preferred size, but portability is a must, so I'm thinking 15.6'' or less?
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
If anything, some minimal photo/ image editing in Adobe CS (in practice I've used GIMP) but for pretty basic stuff. I have a steam account and mostly run games like Sid Meyers games or FTL
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
see above - nothing with hardcore graphic needs
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
GOOD KEYBOARD - durability is a big +++
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
A good deal overcomes a lot, but I really do want something that feels well-built and not too mushy or plasticky... I've been gravitating toward ThinkPad/ ThinkBooks for that reason but I'm looking to y'all for better experience. I'm not a tinkerer, but I have marginal tech ability. Mostly it's a TON of tabs on the web, some database programs, slack, etc, but I'd like something that can handle multitasking. Also, not a dealbreaker (obvi because I'm looking at the 13'' lenovo) but a numeric keypad would be a nice plus - as long as it didn't affect portability too much in terms of size

Reccomend a $200-150 laptop for websurfing and cloud gaming (through Parsec)

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 05:22 AM PST

I'd like to replace my decade-old laptop (i3 2310M/GT555M/8GB DDR3 RAM) with something capable of H.265 encoding (for Parsec hosting and streaming, to ditch RDP), preferably 1080p IPS screen and good baterry life, without losing out in CPU performance too much (say, Celeron N4100, despite being way more power-efficent, seems to be slower for a web browsing, than an i3 from 2011)

I found these older Skylake models quite appealing (all in used condition, obviously, and in ~$200 range on ebay):

    Fujitsu LifeBook P727 - i3 7100U/IPS 1080P+Touchscreen

    Dell Latitude 3380 - i3 6006U/IPS HD

    Lenovo ThinkPad L460 - i5 6200U/IPS HD

    Any more suggestions?

Looking for a good laptop for college

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 04:24 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $700 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Maybe not refurbs, but I'm open to used laptops.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Battery life, performance, build quality.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important. I will mostly use this laptop for school work only and I need something that I can comfortably bring to school.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A: I have terrible eyesight so I'm looking for anything between 13 in and 15 in.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run: I already have a gaming laptop and I don't do photo/video editing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I really prioritize a good keyboard and multiple usb ports. I also want something that doesn't have those massive, bulky chargers. Since I will mostly use this laptop for school work that I do while in campus, I don't think I need that much storage/memory but it never hurts to have some extra space. I'm also looking for anything above a i5 processor. Preferably, i7.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion: This might sound dumb, but I'd prefer a black or dark gray laptop. I hate white/silver laptops. And no chromebooks, please.

As an extra note, I'm thinking of buying a macbook air but I'm not sure if it's worth the money since I already have a perfectly functional laptop at home, it's just old, slow, battery life is non-existent and it's too heavy and large to bring to class. I really want a macbook, but I'm not sure if it's a good financial decision.

    Thanks in advance!
